It's Not Too Late: Cars.com Offers Valuable Advice on Automotive Tax Credits and Deductions
CHICAGO, April 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- With tax day quickly approaching, drivers of alternate-fuel vehicles, including hybrids, may be missing out on valuable money-saving credits and deductions - most of which expire after this tax season. Cars.com, a leading online resource for buying, selling or owning a car, has compiled a comprehensive guide on finding and claiming the tax credits and deductions drivers might be owed.
These credits launched with the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and ended on December 31, 2010. To be eligible for the credits, vehicles had to have been purchased in 2010, and must fall into one of five categories: fuel cell, advance lean-burn technology, hybrid, electric or alternative fuel. Only the original owner of the vehicle is eligible for any credits or deductions.
"Filing for these tax credits can be confusing and cumbersome, it's not as easy as checking a box," says Patrick Olsen, Cars.com Editor in Chief. "Credits differ by make, model and even sometimes by trim level, so it's important that a consumer takes the time to research what they qualify for and have all the information needed to file on hand. For those who have more complicated filing issues, like amending a return that they already filed, we recommend consulting with an accountant."
The Act also specifies that after the manufacturer sells 60,000 units, the credits begin to phase out. The only manufacturers who hit that mark during the program were Ford, Honda, Toyota and Volkswagen.
"Even though Ford, Honda and Volkswagen did hit the 60,000 sales mark, those who purchased one of their hybrids this year should still check our guide," says Olsen. "There are some models from these manufacturers that qualified for the credit in 2010, based on the date they were purchased. Those interested in an electric vehicle still have a year to qualify for a tax credit of up to $7,500."

The FXT 2550 and 2570 models feature faster Intel Xeon quad-core processors, more capacity on the DRAM storage tier and enhanced connectivity with six 1 Gigabit Ethernet ports, in addition to dual 10GbE ports with copper or optical options.

The Atmel ATA6843 and ATA6844 devices are new members of the company's extensive gate driver family designed for 3-phase brushless DC (BLDC) motor control applications including turbo chargers, waste gates, EGR, pumps, fans, power window, power doors and power seats. They feature six-output stages for direct motor control when combined with an Atmel AVR® microcontroller (MCU), and an on-chip Atmel automotive LIN transceiver IP for in-car communication.
The new driver ICs are the only products in the industry to incorporate all the essential functional blocks to supply and monitor a microcontroller in BLDC motor control applications. This feature enables a smaller footprint for applications with limited space and increases the overall system safety.
With most automotive BLDC motor applications located in hot under-the-hood environments, the ability to withstand extremely hot temperatures is a device requirement. The new Atmel ATA6844 is a high-temperature version to operate at chip temperatures of up to 200 degrees C. The device is manufactured in Atmel's own state-of-the-art BCD-on-SOI technology SMART-I.S.(TM) for extreme temperatures, and enables direct attachment of the ECU to hot actuators for short wiring and optimized construction.
Atmel automotive-qualified AVR microcontrollers are ideally suited to support the new system basis gate driver ICs in various BLDC motors with Hall sensors as well as sensorless BLDC motors with back-electromagnetic force (BEMF) sensing. With the devices' six input stages, the MCU individually controls each of the six output stages. A coast function allows simultaneous disabling of all six output stages in case of emergency. The on-board integrated watchdog independently monitors the MCU to increase the overall system safety, eliminating an additional external component. Dangerous short-circuit currents caused by faulty control signals are prevented from the pin-programmable timer stage that allows users to set a dead time for disabling unintended simultaneous activation of a high-side and a low-side power MOSFET within one branch.

Programming is fully searchable, including by genre, and the application includes the ability to schedule DVR recordings and manage previously-recorded content.

Verizon Unveils Innovative Hybrid and Alternative-Energy Vehicles
LANDOVER, Md., April 1, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon on Friday (April 1) showcased some of the newest energy-efficient additions to its motor vehicle fleet at an event attended by President Barack Obama. Verizon, which has the third-largest corporate vehicle fleet in the nation, was among five companies recognized by the president for adding substantive numbers of green vehicles.
Verizon displayed three of its latest energy-efficient vehicles at the event, which featured alternative-energy trucks and cars operated by some of the nation's largest corporations.
"We're bringing environmentally friendly innovation and advanced technologies to our motor fleet operations," said Jim Gowen, chief sustainability officer for Verizon. "By seizing the opportunity to help improve the environment, our vehicles are saving energy, reducing emissions and improving our greenhouse gas profile."
At the event, held at a UPS facility in Landover, Verizon displayed a hybrid Chevrolet pick-up, an all-electric Chevrolet Volt and a first-of-its-kind hybrid aerial-splicing vehicle. Over the past few years, the company has added hundreds of hybrid Toyota Priuses, as well as more than 500 compressed natural gas vans and 700 hybrid pickups.
Verizon is the first communications company to engineer and deploy a hybrid fiber splicing unit. Because of their weight, these vehicles (commonly known as "bucket trucks") traditionally consume significant amounts of fuel. To reduce fuel consumption, the company incorporated a hybrid engine and innovative, onboard batteries that assist in the vehicles' acceleration, and power the bucket lift and lighting units.
"We're replacing less-efficient vehicles with transformational, energy-efficient cars and trucks - a move that will have a long-term impact on reducing and improving fuel consumption and reducing pollutants," said William Roberts, president of Verizon Maryland and the District of Columbia. "This event is a clear example of what happens when companies are allowed to innovate and deploy different technologies to meet their needs while achieving our shared environmentally positive goals."
Verizon was also the first company in the nation to deploy hybrid pickup trucks on a large scale, in a commercial setting. Last year, Verizon deployed more than 700 of these vehicles - which improve fuel efficiency by 50 percent and reduce carbon dioxide by 43 percent - and plans to purchase up to 300 additional units in 2011.
The company will also add several new all-electric Chevrolet Volts to its fleet in 2011. The Volts can travel up to 350 miles on a single charge.
Verizon has implemented other environmentally friendly programs in its fleet operations, including an energy-saving initiative that requires drivers to turn off vehicles instead of letting them idle. This program saved 1.7 million gallons of fuel in a single year, equivalent to eliminating more than 33 million pounds of CO2.
Verizon's "telematics" program leverages the company's wireless LTE network to integrate fleet global positioning systems and on-board diagnostic data to monitor and further minimize fuel consumption, speeding and poor driver habits that contribute to energy waste and consumption.
Verizon now has nearly 2,000 alternative-fuel vehicles in its fleet, and plans to have up to 15 percent of it operating with alternative fuels by 2015.
