IBM and Cable&Wireless Worldwide Announce UK Smart Energy Cloud
LONDON, March 21, 2011/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --
- By the End of the Decade One in Four UK Power Stations are
Set to Close and UK Gas Production is Expected to be Half of Current
Levels, yet Demand for Electricity is Expected to Increase by More than
50 Per Cent by 2050
- This Collaboration is to Create a Flexible, Secure and
Scalable Data and Communications Hub to Support the UK Government's Smart
Meter Implementation Programme and its Strategy to Cut Emissions by 80
Per Cent by 2050
IBM (NYSE: IBM) and Cable&Wireless Worldwide (LSE: CW.L),
today jointly announce their collaboration to develop a new intelligent data
and communications solution, UK Smart Energy Cloud, to support the UK's Smart
Meter Implementation Programme, which aims to rollout more than 50 million
smart meters in the UK.
UK Smart Energy Cloud has the potential to provide a complete
overview of energy usage across the country and pave the way for easier
implementation of a smart grid. The solution will utilise the extensive
experience IBM has gained from leading and implementing smart grid programmes
around the world and its proven enabling software and middleware. The
solution will be supported by C&W Worldwide's extensive, secure
next-generation network and communications integration capability.
There has never been a more challenging time for the energy
industry with decisions being taken to protect the country's energy supply
that will have significant implications for everyone in the UK. Both smart
meters and the smart grid are significant steps on the journey to a new
energy future, potentially changing for the better the way we consume and
distribute energy.
Solution that grows as you grow
UK Smart Energy Cloud will have the ability to gather data
many times a day, from any smart meter in the country and store it centrally
in a secure, purpose built, UK based hosted cloud environment. Data can then
be sent to energy retailers for assessment, therefore ensuring consumers
receive more accurate bills. In addition, Distributor Network Operators
(DNOs) will also receive this data which will enable smart grid
functionality.
As the number of meters and the level of functionality is set
to grow significantly, the UK Smart Energy Cloud shall grow in response,
without the need to replace or significantly modify the solution. It will
offer a secure, fully integrated and affordable solution which will link with
existing industry systems.
Energy retailers will not need to make expensive up-front
investments in hardware, systems, people, or the communications network.
Instead, they can have confidence in deploying smart meters, knowing that any
meters inherited from other retailers can be switched with no service
disruption. For consumers, this means switching retailers will become easier
and more transparent.
"As we start the journey towards a low carbon economy smart
meters will drive a wave of change in the energy system and are set to become
an increasingly important part of the nation's critical infrastructure", says
Laurence Carpanini, Director of Smart Meters and Smart Grids, IBM UK &
Ireland. "With this collaboration, we can provide the UK with a flexible,
intelligent solution based on proven technology. We can support the national
Smart Meter Implementation Programme and help communities become smarter,
more connected and in turn, more sustainable."
Matt Key, Managing Director of Enterprise at C&W Worldwide,
comments: "We believe a collaboration of this kind is the most natural
approach to achieving an end to end solution for a complete smart metering
roll-out and making smart grid a reality. The challenge is for smart meters
to reach the entire UK population and this will require a combination of
enabling solutions, such as GPRS, radio and Power Line Carrier to make sure
it's cost effective. However, it is the network connecting it all and
intelligent data management, that is central to the smart agenda's success.
"This alliance offers us exciting opportunities to work
together on developing innovative solutions to create a smart grid, the next
era of energy distribution in the UK, and support the Government's long-term
environmental strategy to cut emissions by 80 per cent by 2050."
Proven global expertise
IBM has a long history of expertise in smart grid projects,
which range from innovative research projects to full scale deployments. In
the UK IBM is currently advising three of the six largest energy retailers on
transforming their business in preparation for smart metering. Globally IBM
has been involved in more than 150 smart grid programmes in mature and
emerging markets. Current global projects include working in Malta to create
the first nation-wide smart grid and a pilot project with DONG Energy in
Denmark to install remote monitoring and control devices to gain information
about the state of the grid.
C&W Worldwide has a strong heritage in the UK utility sector
through the assimilation of Energis, THUS and Your Comms. It has more than
1,100 operational network sites, many co-located at substations and on the
transmission companies' estate, and in excess of 30,000 route kilometres of
fibre wrapped around most of the earth wire of the UK's energy transmission
networks.
Notes to Editors:
Cloud Computing:
Cloud computing is a new model for delivering IT whereby
server, storage and applications are delivered via internet based
technologies. The model differs from traditional IT service provision via the
ability of customers to scale-up and down their usage as required and the
capability to allow pricing to be determined by usage - i.e. on a
pay-as-you-go basis.
Technical information:
UK Smart Energy Cloud is built on IBM's scalable WebSphere(R)
enterprise messaging infrastructure and uses an Informix time-series database
at its core. Security, monitoring and management is provided by Tivoli(R)
products. The solution operates in a sideways-scalable, managed
infrastructure, using virtualisation to achieve a robust, reliable,
cost-effective solution.

Avecto Privilege Guard Extends User Account Control for the Enterprise
BOSTON, Massachusetts and MANCHESTER, England, March 21, 2011/PRNewswire/ -- Avecto, the leader in Windows privilege management, today announced the
launch of Privilege Guard 2.7, which enhances its existing User Account
Control (UAC) integration to deal with applications that trigger dynamic
elevation.
"User Account Control is an important security feature within Windows 7,
but it's reliance on a local administrator account makes it unsuitable for
many corporate environments," says Mark Austin, CTO at Avecto. "With
Privilege Guard 2.7, we have extended our UAC integration to allow dynamic
UAC prompts to be replaced with a flexible approach that is more suitable for
corporate environments, which leads to an improved user experience and
reduced help desk calls."
The ability for Privilege Guard to deal with individual applications that
trigger UAC, leads to a highly configurable solution. Privilege Guard can
suppress inappropriate UAC prompts or replace them with corporate aligned
prompts and error messages, as defined by central policy.
For advanced users, it may be appropriate to simply replace UAC prompts
with a corporate solution that provides clear end user communication and a
full audit trail. In a more locked down scenario, UAC prompts often lead to
end user confusion and Privilege Guard can be configured to replace
inappropriate UAC prompts with meaningful error messages.
Privilege Guard's end user messaging capability is comprehensive and
includes full multi-lingual support and highly customizable messages. The
ability to add corporate banners gives it a distinct feel that clearly
differentiates it from UAC. Users can also be asked to provide reasons for
their actions or request access to applications that they have been
prohibited from running.
The Privilege Guard solution provides organizations with a fully
auditable environment, where users log on with standard user accounts, and
privileges are only assigned to the applications that actually require them,
based on policy settings. The dynamic UAC integration allows advanced
policies to be configured that can elevate individual applications at the
point they request to be re-launched with administrator privileges.
Privilege Guard is integrated with Active Directory Group Policy and can
be deployed without any additional backend infrastructure and provides an
enterprise class approach to least privilege Windows management.
Privilege Guard 2.7 will be officially released on April 4th, 2011.
About Avecto
Avecto is the leader in Windows privilege management, helping
organizations to deploy secure and compliant desktops and servers. With its
award winning Privilege Guard technology, organizations can now empower all
Windows based desktop and server users with the privileges they require to
perform their roles, without compromising the integrity and security of their
systems.
Customers of all sizes rely on Avecto to reduce operating expenses and
strengthen security across their Windows based environments. Our mission is
to enable our customers to lower operating costs and improve system security
by implementing least privilege. Avecto is building a worldwide channel of
partners and system integrators and is headquartered in Manchester, UK. For

- Plogg Provides High Resolution Analysis of Energy Consumption for
Consumer Appliance Manufacturers
The Plogg from Energy Optimizers Limited (EOL) is used to evaluate the
energy performance and profile of electrical appliances based upon actual
consumer behaviour.
The plogg is a combined smart meter plug and data logger. It can be
attached to any electrical appliance or device that uses a standard mains
socket in Schuko, UK, French or USA formats. The Plogg is able to measure the
electrical energy consumption of connected devices and appliances at high
levels of resolution, up to 1 minute as standard and at higher levels of up
to 2 seconds in customised versions.
The benefit for appliance manufacturers is the capability to use the
Plogg in field trials unobtrusively in order to observe consumers' behaviour
and actual patterns of use during each duty cycle and at time of use, whether
daily or weekly. This valuable data assists the manufacturer in identifying
the commonly used operating programs and to optimise the energy efficiency of
the appliance based upon actual behaviour patterns rather than simulated
laboratory tests.
Data logging on the Plogg can be set to either Event dependence or Time
dependence. In the former case the logs are captured only at predefined set
points, when the appliance is switched on or off and when the power (Watts)
exceeds certain limits, imitating the various cycles used in the appliance.
Alternatively, the Plogg can be set to monitor the appliance based on time
dependency only to capture detailed data about the performance of the
appliance. The logs are stored on the Plogg until downloaded to a PC locally
or remotely via the internet.
"The ploggs provide the level of detail that is needed to understand the
behavioural use of connected appliances," said Ollie Smith, Director,
Telegesis UK Limited, "Furthermore, the resulting data can be acquired easily
through the embedded wireless ZigBee communications."

Expats Get New Online Tool to Help Explore a Life Overseas
LONDON, March 21, 2011/PRNewswire/ -- HSBC Bank International has today announced the launch of its new
interactive Expat Explorer tool, an online resource providing users with
unprecedented access to data and insights from HSBC's Expat Explorer Survey,
the world's largest study of expats.
Expat Explorer contains the complete 2010 data from the survey's three
reports; Expat Economics, Expat Experience and Offshore Offspring detailing
every aspect of life abroad. The tool gives users the chance to interact with
the findings through data visualisations and compare countries across a range
of criteria.
The resource provides users with highly visual results through a variety
of graphics and charts including league tables, country comparisons and
rankings. Each output generates its own specific URL which can be shared
through a number of social media sites. This data is also accompanied by a
number of expat case studies across different locations to provide a
colourful picture of life in a given location.
Commenting on the launch, Lisa Wood, Head of Marketing at HSBC Bank
International, said: "The online launch of Expat Explorer is a proud moment
for us and one that demonstrates our commitment to building on the success of
our Expat Explorer Survey and understanding expats' lives. With us
undertaking the world's largest study of expats, we have such a wealth of
information on the experience of living overseas and wanted to bring this to
life for expats in a visually rich and engaging way.
"Considering a move abroad can be a daunting prospect, often involving a
huge amount of research and hopefully through our new online resource we'll
provide some really useful insights for any potential expats. Individuals
will be able to view information tailored to their priorities in life and
lifestyle expectations.
"It's a resource that's got something for everyone, from those interested
simply in where their country ranks to would-be expats and regular movers
looking for their next location. By making the findings social media friendly
we hope to have developed a tool that expats and non-expats alike will want
to share with their peers."
The tool is built in an innovative way, as a blended build using
JavaScript, Flash and PHP. It uses an innovative "physics engine" to create a
fluid and realistic Flash world map, and uses the HTML5 framework to allow
dynamic generation of data based on user selection. The tool was designed and
developed with HSBC Bank International by digital agency Heathwallace.

About the Expat Explorer survey
Expat Explorer was commissioned by HSBC Bank International Ltd and
conducted by third party research company GfK. 4,127 expats were questioned
through an online survey from 26th April 2010 to the 7th June 2010, with
expats from over 100 countries worldwide taking part - making it unique and
the largest survey of its kind. Please note that the sampling technique used
for the 2010 survey does not claim to give a fully representative sample of
all expatriates. In addition, it differs substantially from the sampling
technique used in 2009. Therefore, comparisons of results year on year are
not statistically valid and have been made for illustrative purposes only.
A sample size of 30 or more respondents from each country was required
for inclusion in the league tables, in order to be considered robust and
indicative of the views and trends of the specific population it relates to.
The league tables are based on a series of interrelated factors (rather than
a single factor or question) to ensure a fair assessment of how individual
countries rate across the full criteria. The responses of those who responded
"not applicable" or "refuse to say" have been excluded.

World Premier: RYB Launches ELIOT(R), the First Wireless Detection and Communication System for Piping Networks and Underground Assets
PARIS, March 21, 2011/PRNewswire/ -- RYB, the French leader in utility networks and piping unveils
the first technology solution that enables detection and communication for
underground assets, at the Gastech conference in Amsterdam (March 21 - 24,
2011). Developed in collaboration with CEA-Leti, this unique RFID technology
revolutionizes safety, monitoring, and maintenance for gas, energy, and
dangerous matter networks, thereby significantly reducing the risk of
industrial accidents in these areas.
The risk of industrial accidents is a serious consideration in
the gas and energy sectors, as well as for dangerous liquid transport in
general. One of the critical aspects of these activities is related to the
piping and underground networks used to carry various resources and matter.
Numerous industrial accidents, sometimes with serious consequences, are
directly caused by the involuntary cutting or breakage of poorly identified
underground pipes. The reality of this situation is most often due to
incomplete network maps, or by the fact that techniques for locating pipes
are complex and generally difficult to perform in the field.
In order to resolve this major issue, RYB has worked with
CEA-Leti to develop the first complete wireless detection and communication
system designed for underground networks: ELIOT(R), (equipment for
localization and identification by object technology) - http://www.eliot-tech.com.
Dedicated to detecting networks, this technology represents a
major breakthrough for monitoring and maintaining networks, as well as
reducing industrial risks and costs related to networks that are broken
during works. The system provides advanced traceability for underground
networks, both for infrastructure resource management and maintenance.
The new generation of RFID technology developed by RYB and
CEA-Leti, protected by international patents, offers the following features:
- Detection up to 1.5 meters underground, providing accuracy
within a few centimeters.
- Support for harsh network environments for detection,
localization, and reading of information stored on a chip: networks covered
by all types of ground (tar, sand, dirt, rocks, dry, wet, etc.), or submerged
underwater (such as in the water table).
- Instant feedback.
- Information storage: detected network type (application),
manufacturing date, installation date, serial number, diameter, nominal
pressure, etc.
- Tags with no power supply requirement, integrated directly
in the fitting or pipe, or as standalone electronic markers.
- A simple reading system with an adapted antenna, compatible
with products available on the market.
- A signal measured on the surface precisely describes the
detecting pipe, thus avoiding interference in case of multiple nearby
networks.
The new-generation RFID tags are integrated directly in piping
or network parts using the patented process. Information specific to each
type of piping is embedded onto each tag.
Standalone markers can be used to identify already existing underground
works.
"We are pleased to have successfully met the technical
challenge of developing this detection and autonomous communication
technology, specifically adapted for piping and underground networks. This
solution is unique in the world today. This development effort required over
three years of close collaboration with CEA-Leti, involving research on
numerous potential options and over one million Euros in investment. A new
era has now arrived for underground network-related works. The ELIOT solution
meets operator needs for gas and energy networks, as well as for the
transport of dangerous matter in general, making it easier to monitor and
maintain underground works and significantly reduce the risk of major
industrial accidents in many sectors," explains Marc-Antoine Blin, General
Manager of RYB.
Tests were also performed on the GDF-Suez group's experimental
platform. GDF-Suez, a major player in gas and water distribution, provided
expertise in terms of the major issues in the field, enabling RYB / CEA-Leti
to properly adapt the technical solution to real-world operational
requirements.

Ben Heck Builds 1970s Atari-Style Xbox 360 System in New Episode of element14's 'The Ben Heck Show'
CHICAGO, March 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --element14, a collaborative social community and electronics store for design engineers and electronics enthusiasts, and modding guru Benjamin J. Heckendorn, a.k.a. Ben Heck, incorporate the old with the new as Ben combines a 1977 Atari console with an Xbox 360(TM) laptop system in the latest episode of "The Ben Heck Show."
In this episode, Ben works on a custom mod for Atari to create an Xbox 360 portable laptop with the look and feel of a 1970s Atari console to help support the debut of new games based on iconic titles, including Yar's® Revenge and Star Raiders®. Ben takes viewers through the entire build process, including designing the system with Adobe® Illustrator®, routing each piece of the new casing, re-wiring and connecting the Xbox 360 components, and prepping the circuit board inside the new LCD screen and backing panel to ensure the electronics fit properly.
"I was thrilled when Atari approached me to build this unique gaming system - this is the most 'Ben Heck' type project I could possibly build," said Ben. "It was a great experience taking consoles from two completely different eras and combining them, not only from a mechanics standpoint, but incorporating the design features to replicate an old Atari. That's what art's all about!"
Throughout the design and build process, Ben takes careful consideration to incorporate elements from the original Atari system such as wood paneling, sharp, contoured edges and Atari's classic metal switches. He even combines graphics from the original Atari joystick with the "ring of light" required by the Xbox system. After powering up the machine for a quick game of 'Street Fighter IV,' Ben concludes the project a major triumph.
"We are thrilled with the final build of Ben's custom Xbox 360 1977 Edition system," said Lee Jacobson, SVP of Licensing and Digital Publishing, Atari. "Ben clearly had a lot of fun and it's great to see how the classic, retro Atari design is incorporated. The system completely exceeded our expectations and we're sure that any Atari enthusiast would be thrilled to use this unique system."
Show fans are invited to visit element14 to register for a chance to win one of Ben's recent builds, submit videos of their own builds or to throw Ben a challenge for a future episode.
"In this episode you can see just how much fun Ben has on his modding projects - from gleeful laughing as he takes a blowtorch to a circuit board, to making a point to include the classic components inherent of the original Atari system," said Alisha Mowbray, senior vice president of marketing, element14. "As usual, Ben's humor and the ease in which he explains his building process make for another fun and informative episode. And, this latest creation is sure to become yet another one of Ben's highly coveted builds."

AT&T Invests in New Jersey Network to Deliver Most-Advanced Mobile Broadband Experience
Plans Call for Addition of More than 30 New Cell Sites and the Expansion of Backhaul in 2011 as Part of Initiative to Drive 4G Speeds, Increase Wireless Network Capacity
BEDMINISTER, N.J., March 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T* today announced plans to add more than 30 new cell sites and upgrade nearly 1,850 cell sites across New Jersey as part of its 2011 initiative to deliver the nation's most-advanced mobile broadband experience.
The New Jersey wireless network enhancements are part of AT&T's planned $19-billion investment in its national wireless and wireline networks and other capital projects in 2011. The investment will support plans to enable 4G speeds over an increasing portion of the country throughout the year, including the planned initial launch of LTE beginning mid-year and the deployment of enhanced backhaul connections that enable 4G speeds**.
The 2011 investment will also support the build and upgrade of thousands of cell sites nationwide designed to increase network speed, coverage and reliability for both mobile voice and broadband services. AT&T also plans to install additional radio "carriers" at more than 30,000 cell sites nationally this year, enabling new layers of spectrum capacity to carry larger volumes of mobile broadband traffic. This additional capacity enables AT&T to support increasing mobile data traffic volumes, which have increased more than 8,000 percent over the past four years.
Today's announcement builds on the momentum established during AT&T's 2010 wireless investment, when it added more than 20 new cell sites in New Jersey and upgraded more than 1,330 existing sites to mobile broadband. From 2008 to 2010, AT&T's capital investment in its New Jersey wireline and wireless networks was more than $3 billion.
"A more advanced mobile broadband experience drives economic growth, stimulates jobs and equips New Jersey businesses to meet the network demands of today and tomorrow," said J. Michael Schweder, AT&T President New Jersey. "We've significantly ramped up our wireless investments to enable an experience that offers New Jersey consumers better speed, better reliability and better availability."
AT&T also continues to drive innovation in network technologies to provide maximum efficiency and performance for customers. In 2011, AT&T will focus on continuing to enhance its wireless network forecasting capabilities to better predict usage trends and build network capacity to always stay one step ahead of customer need. AT&T also continues to pioneer broadband solutions for high-traffic areas like stadiums and public places, deploying technologies including Distributed Access System networks and Wi-Fi Hot Zones.
"Smartphones, tablets and laptops are continuing to drive unprecedented demand for wireless access everywhere," said Tom DeVito, AT&T's Vice President and General Manager for New Jersey and New York. "Wi-Fi investments are critical for meeting these needs and ensuring a best-in-class wireless experience."
AT&T also operates the nation's largest Wi-Fi network*** with more than 24,000 hotspots in the U.S. and provides access to more than 135,000 hotspots globally through roaming agreements. Most AT&T smartphone customers get access to our entire national Wi-Fi network at no additional cost, and Wi-Fi usage doesn't count against customers' monthly data plans.
AT&T's mobile broadband network is based on the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) family of technologies that includes GSM and UMTS, the most widely used wireless network platforms in the world. AT&T has the best international coverage of any U.S. wireless provider, providing access to voice service in more than 220 countries and data service in more than 200 countries. AT&T also offers voice and data roaming coverage on more than 135 major cruise ships, as well as mobile broadband services in more than 130 countries.

Allegro DVT Enhances its AL2000 N-Screen OTT Transcoder
GRENOBLE, France, March 18, 2011/PRNewswire/ -- Allegro DVT unveils tons of new features for the AL2000 Live Transcoder
at IPTV-WF 2011. Come meet us and discover these news features at IPTV-WF on
booth #12.
New features include:
- Multi-encapsulation for multi-format streaming with no additional CPU
load.
The AL2000 now delivers a single live stream to several WebTV formats
simultaneously, sharing a single H.264 embedded encoder. With this neat
feature, the AL2000 reaches a new level of scalability, providing Apple HLS,
Microsoft Smooth Streaming and Adobe Flash streams, with the same CPU usage
as single-format video encoding.
- Generic DRM Interface lets customers use their own DRM system.
Allegro DVT extends already existing support for Verimatrix with a
Generic DRM Interface. This open interface allows any middleware provider or
DRM vendor to interface the AL2000 with its existing DRM system.
- Ready for Start Over and Catch-Up TV.
Thanks to its live+file outputs, the AL2000 is the perfect solution for
full-featured streaming including Start Over and Catch-Up TV. The AL2000 is
constantly tested against a variety of streaming servers and third part
products to ensure seamless solution integration.
- Support for VP8 to prepare integration with HTML5.
Allegro DVT announces upcoming AL2000 support for Google VP8, extending
Allegro DVT expertise to this promising codec. The result will be high
quality service without compromising the huge number of channels per unit.
- Enhanced H.264 rate-control mode providing optimal video quality for
HTTP-based delivery.
HTTP-based delivery with fragmented formats such as Apple HLS, Microsoft
Smooth Streaming and Adobe Flash raises new constraints for network
transmission. To deliver the best possible video quality, the AL2000 H.264
rate-control stage has been specifically optimized for these formats.
Why compromise with half-featured devices? Opt for 24/24
service availability, full SNMP administration and dynamic sparing.

Loudoun County High School Teachers Bring Service-Learning Game Into Curriculum to Drive Student Success
MCLEAN, Va., March 18, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, at the Council of Great City Schools and USA TODAY Unite to Make a Difference Forum, Virginia Secretary of Education Gerard Robinson highlighted the work of four Loudoun County High School students who won top honors in a nationally-recognized, socially-networked, problem-solving game called InterroBang. The event, in which Secretary Robinson will be participating, will bring together the country's largest urban school districts, influential business leaders and other top leaders in education. InterroBang will be featured and demonstrated by the winning students for more than 50 superintendents from across the United States.
"Virginia is proud of these students and teachers. InterroBang shows us all clear evidence of how these students achieved 21st century skills, which is what they need to compete in the global economy and, brings the world to their computer screen," stated Virginia Secretary of Education Gerard Robinson. "These are goals supported by Governor Bob McDonnell's Opportunity to Learn Agenda and Commission on Higher Education Reform, Innovation and Investment. We would like to commend Loudoun County Public Schools and Microsoft U.S. Partners in Learning for their pioneering InterroBang efforts, an innovative public-private partnership available to all schools."
To play InterroBang, students select a mission online, complete it in the real world, and post evidence of their deeds online. Loudoun County AP English teachers required students to complete missions in order to pass their class. They saw InterroBang as a way to keep their students engaged in learning and enjoy the process of critical thinking. One student explained the physics involved with his skateboarding. Another student painted a mural encompassing many students' responses to Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" speech, capturing their dreams. Using Bing Translator, another student communicated directly with a Chilean student and learned about cultural differences and similarities. And, another student won for creating a music video which comments on his schools need for continued financial support as well as his interests in playing the drums and competitive swimming.
InterroBang is a Microsoft U.S. Partners in Learning initiative in partnership with Nuvana, Learn and Serve America, and ePals. Since November 2010, 8,000 students in more than 72 countries have submitted thousands of completed missions (known as deeds) to InterroBang game moderators. InterroBang moderators, who are paid educational professionals, provided players with feedback and often ask players to revise their work. When moderators approve a deed, the player receives points. Many teachers embrace InterroBang not only because the missions encourage learning by doing but because they feel like the game moderators are virtual teachers in their classroom.
"We are excited to see InterroBang catch on in Virginia and across the country as students get excited about learning and take their skills from the classroom to the real world to make a difference," said Andrew Ko, Senior Director of U.S. Partners in Learning, Microsoft Corp. "Not only does InterroBang allow students and teachers to engage with their communities, but it is a fun and effective way for students to gain 21st century skills."
InterroBang is a socially-networked game for middle and secondary students that teachers the art of problem solving, creative thinking, collaboration, communications and more. It combines many other essential elements of powerful 21st century learning such as personalized learning, experiential education, online mentoring, peer-to-peer support, and formative assessment and wraps it up in something really fun - a game. It also allows for players to have a voice the learning process because players can submit new missions for consideration. Players' voices are heard. Their voices were also heard during the awards conference call with one student stating: "InterroBang is the best part of high school."
