Bedewi, 39, said he was somewhat disoriented by the accident but the F-150's SYNC 911 Assist feature continued to work.
"By the time I realized what was going on there was definitely a lot of wasted time," Bedewi said. "I was in shock."
Bedewi said he only had minor injuries, which he attributes in part to the many safety features of the F-150.
He has insisted the rental cars he's been driving since the accident - a Ford Flex and a Ford Edge - have the feature.

How it works
The Ford SYNC 911 Assist system uses the driver's own mobile phone and runs in the background once the phone is properly paired with SYNC. After the one-time setup, the phone connects with SYNC every time the driver enters the vehicle with his or her phone and the phone is turned on.
Should an accident occur in which an airbag deploys or, in certain vehicles, the emergency fuel pump shutoff is activated, the feature uses SYNC hands-free phone capabilities to connect the driver directly with a local 911 operator through the paired phone. The feature delivers a critical voice message to operators indicating that a vehicle has been in a crash and opens the line for hands-free communication.
If an accident occurs while the phone connected with SYNC is being used for a normal call, SYNC 911 Assist can end that call and dial 911. Also, incoming phone calls and/or texts will not interrupt communication between vehicle occupants and emergency responders.

There is no middleman or call center between those involved in the accident and those trying to help the victims, unlike competitive systems that start the emergency response process by calling a third-party center instead of actual 911 operators. Once connected, operators get to hear information firsthand and directly from SYNC and the vehicle occupants.
"By cutting out the middleman, Ford SYNC 911 Assist users don't have to worry about wasted time that could mean the difference between life and death," Hatton said. The extent to which users have to maintain SYNC 911 Assist is limited to the one-time setup. A prompt occurs the first time a phone is paired with the system that asks if the owner wants to set SYNC 911 Assist on. Once turned on, it remains that way unless the customer decides to turn the system off.
Ford estimates that at least 85 percent of customers pair their phones with SYNC.
SYNC 911 Assist enhancements
Ford has continued to improve SYNC 911 Assist. Starting with selected 2011 model year vehicles, SYNC 911 Assist can provide emergency operators with GPS coordinates that are generated by a vehicle's onboard GPS receiver.
Also, vehicles equipped with optional MyFord Touch(TM) and MyLincoln Touch(TM) have a priority emergency screen that contains location information during a 911 Assist call along with quick-touch access to In Case of Emergency (ICE) contacts at the end of a 911 Assist call.
SYNC 911 Assist was introduced to the public at the 2008 International CES. It was first available on 2009 model year vehicles with a dealer-installed upgrade available for 2008 models.

LSI to Sell External Storage Systems Business to NetApp for $480 Million
Board Authorizes New $750 Million Stock Repurchase Program
MILPITAS, Calif., March 9, 2011 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- LSI Corporation (NYSE: LSI) today announced that it has signed a definitive agreement to sell its external storage systems business to NetApp, Inc. (Nasdaq: NTAP) for $480 million in cash. The company also announced today that its board of directors has authorized a new stock repurchase program of up to $750 million.
The company is emerging from a multi-year investment cycle which has significantly increased the opportunities and potential of its core semiconductor business. The strategic decision to divest the external storage systems business was based on the company's expectation that long-term shareholder value can be maximized by becoming a pure-play semiconductor company.
"We're excited by the opportunities we have been pursuing in our semiconductor business and are well positioned at the forefront of a strong pipeline of design win ramps that we expect to drive top line growth," said Abhi Talwalkar, LSI president and chief executive officer. "Going forward as a pure-play storage and networking semiconductor company, we believe we can accelerate the achievement of our current business model, establish a richer business model target, and deliver greater long-term shareholder value."
Under terms of the agreement, NetApp will purchase substantially all the assets of the LSI external storage systems business, which develops and delivers Engenio® external storage systems products and technology to a wide range of partners that provide storage solutions to end customers. The business being purchased generated revenues of $705 million in 2010.
The LSI RAID adapter business, which develops LSI® MegaRAID® and 3ware® storage controllers and software for direct-attached storage environments, will remain with LSI.
Upon closing, most LSI external storage systems employees are expected to join NetApp, a global provider of storage and data management solutions.

About the Transaction
As a result of the sale, LSI expects to eliminate $35 million to $40 million per quarter of operating expenses upon closing of the transaction.
LSI expects the combined effect of the transaction, its associated expense reduction, the new stock repurchase program and anticipated strong revenue growth in its semiconductor business going forward to be slightly dilutive to 2011 earnings per share (EPS) and neutral to accretive to 2012 EPS.
The company does not expect to incur any material tax obligations in connection with the transaction and expects to provide additional financial information after closing the transaction.
The transaction is expected to close in approximately 60 days, subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals including those required by the Hart-Scott-Rodino Antitrust Improvements Act.

Stock repurchases under the newly authorized program are expected to be funded from the proceeds of the sale of the external storage systems business, available cash and short-term investments.

New Cell Site Activated as Part of Ongoing AT&T Investment in Local Wireless Network
REXVILLE, N.Y., March 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of its continuing network investment to support growing demand for mobile devices and services, AT&T* today announced the activation of a new cell site serving the Rexville/West Union area of Steuben County that will enhance coverage for area residents and businesses.
The new cell site is one part of AT&T's ongoing efforts to drive innovation and extend its mobile network. It is also part of our ongoing investment to build the networks that will fuel economic growth and create jobs, and enable AT&T's customers to quickly access the content, applications and services that matter most to them.
