AT&T Building Most Advanced Mobile Broadband Experience in Seattle, Announces 2011 Network Upgrade Plans
AT&T to Expand Backhaul in 2011 in Seattle to Enable 4G Speeds, Increase Wireless Network Capacity at More Than 400 Cell Sites, Upgrade Hundreds of Cell Sites
SEATTLE, March 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T*, building on its strong 2010 record of network accomplishments, today announced network improvement plans designed to enable 4G speeds** and enhanced reliability to Seattle and surrounding communities in 2011. The wireless network enhancement plans are part of AT&T's planned $19-billion investment in its wireless and wireline networks and other capital projects in 2011.
Dan Youmans, president of AT&T Washington, says AT&T plans the following network improvements in the Seattle area in 2011:
-- Deploying enhanced backhaul connections to two-thirds of the area's cell
sites. Combined with HSPA+ technology, these backhaul deployments will
enable 4G speeds for local customers.
-- Delivering additional wireless capacity to more than 400 cell sites in
the area through the addition of new layers of frequency, also known as
"carriers." Adding extra capacity to a cell site is like widening a
highway - you're creating more lanes to accommodate increasing traffic.
-- Installing new cell sites to improve network coverage.
-- Installing distributed antenna systems in high-traffic areas and
facilities, such as office buildings and sporting and event venues, to
provide enhanced wireless coverage to customers in indoor or outdoor
spaces where geographical limitations might otherwise prevent an optimal
wireless experience.
Youmans said AT&T invested more than $200 million in its Seattle area wireless and wireline network from 2008 through 2010 as part of its commitment to superior service in the area.
The nation's fastest mobile broadband network is getting faster with 4G. A key planned upgrade for 2011 is deployment of enhanced backhaul connections to more than two thirds of the cell sites in the Seattle area to enable 4G speeds. Backhaul connections carry traffic between cell sites and AT&T's nationwide network. Enhanced fiber-optic and ethernet backhaul connections expand capacity many times over, and enable additional expansion in the years to come.

The investments made in the Seattle area wireless and wireline networks are part of the $1.3 billion AT&T invested from 2008-2010 across Washington, Youmans said.
This year's plans build upon the improvements AT&T completed in 2010 to strengthen its Seattle area mobile broadband network, including the installation of four new cell sites, increasing wireless capacity by at least an additional 50 percent on more than 170 cell sites and the installation of distributed antenna systems in several targeted venues to handle increased traffic.

AT&T Implemented 4,200 Energy Efficiency Projects in 2010 Resulting in an Annualized Energy Savings of $44 Million
DALLAS, March 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T* announced today that it realized $44 million in annualized energy savings as a result of implementing 4,200 energy efficiency projects at AT&T facilities in 2010. Examples of the energy efficiency projects include:
-- Replaced tower light controllers and incandescent bulbs with LEDs at
over 1,100 cell sites.
-- As part of ongoing network upgrades, removed switches at 11 central
office sites in 2010, thus cutting power consumption across the network
by more than 300,000 kilowatt hours.
-- Deployed desktop power management software on 169,000 computers
generating a total estimated annualized savings of $614,000.
This past year AT&T launched a comprehensive online energy management training program for AT&T corporate real estate managers. In 2008, AT&T established an energy intensity metric based on kWh per terabyte of data carried on their network and set a goal for 2009 to reduce that intensity by 15 percent. In 2009, AT&T achieved a 23.8 percent decrease in energy intensity using 498 kWh per terabyte of data carried on their network. For 2010, AT&T set a goal to further reduce energy intensity by an additional 15 percent as compared with 2009's KWh per terabyte of data figure.
Also in 2009 AT&T rolled out a comprehensive Energy Scorecard, which is used to grade energy performance at each of AT&T's 500 top energy-consuming facilities. The Scorecard tracks data, sets goals and actually awards scores based on the real estate managers' energy performance. AT&T real estate managers identified many of the 4,200 energy related projects implemented over the last year.

GTEC to be Sold to an Affiliate of Ares Management

Update to network infrastructure agreement with YahSat enables Ka-band Yonder service in the Middle East
CARLSBAD, Calif., March 3, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- ViaSat Inc. (Nasdaq: VSAT) is building on its success in the global mobile satellite networking business at Ku-band by expanding to Ka-band in key international markets. The Yonder® mobile broadband network service has been ViaSat's fastest growing business over the past two years. The network serves business jets, maritime vessels, and government and defense customers around the world. Based on the ArcLight® spread spectrum networking system, the Yonder service offers much higher speeds, lower airtime pricing and much greater total bandwidth availability than L-band mobile services. New healthcare portal offers increased patient safety and empowerment

The IBM Patient Empowerment System goes beyond simply allowing patients to schedule appointments online or access a personal health record. The portal is based on new technology developed by IBM Research in collaboration with physicians and administrators of the Gacheon University Gil Hospital in Korea. Among the largest medical centers in Korea with approximately one million patients, the hospital recently decided to provide physicians and patients with access to the portal as part of a pilot project to increase efficiency and reduce costs.
The IBM Patient Empowerment System is a standards-based platform, enabling patients to integrate and manage their healthcare data for all medical needs, receive personalized recommendations or alerts for safer medical treatment, and immediately access data from a vast range of sources including: third-party health portals, hospital electronic medical record systems, sensors, home devices for monitoring health conditions, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) alerts, medical sites like PubMed, and more. IBM is previewing the system this week at CeBIT in Hanover Germany.

Although more public sources for medical information are becoming available on the Internet all the time, this onslaught often leaves patients more confused rather than more knowledgeable. Weeding out relevant and accurate information in this sea of data is difficult for the typical patient but the IBM Patient Empowerment System uses expert analytics to take into account a patient's personal medical history and offer decision support information that is appropriate for them.
One example where public knowledge could improve patient safety involves personalized alerts for adverse drug events (ADE) -- incidents where different medications could be dangerous when taken together. The Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that there are 7,000 deaths per year due to medication errors alone -- about 16 percent more deaths than those attributable to work-related injuries.
ADE contributes greatly to added expenses in hospitalization and insurance costs every year. This service uses the platform's knowledge-bases alongside public repositories for drug-drug, drug-disease, drug-food, and pharmacogenetics interactions; these are then analyzed together with the most current patient clinical and genetic data. The output is an alert that can be given at the point of care to avoid potential harm associated with various drug interactions.
For example, if a patient is already being treated with prescription medicines and wants to take an over-the-counter medication, she would log into the IBM Patient Empowerment System and add the name of the drug to her list of medications. The system immediately crawls through her medical data, performs deep analytics, and then issues a warning message with details about a potentially dangerous interaction between one of the drugs she's already taking and the new one.
Because the system incorporates the patient's genetic profile, it can also issue warnings to the patient and prescribing physician if certain dosages or drug combinations are problematic given her personal genetic variations. Such genetic variations can lead a person to metabolize certain drugs differently than the greater population, raising the risk of dangerous adverse drug reactions. This information might otherwise be unavailable or even unknown to her physician.
Other smart services developed as part of this healthcare portal include socio-medical search and personalized recommendation services. The system maintains a unique dataspace that represents social entities, such as patients and healthcare personnel, and their relationship with medical entities, such as medications, allergies and treatment plans. The IBM Patient Empowerment System also offers search capabilities and recommendations about patients who suffer from similar problems, potential treatment plans, expert physicians, and more. These features are built on IBM's Big Data Analytics platform, which can process structured and unstructured data at scale and speed not possible with traditional data warehouse technologies, allowing the system to discover relations hidden in the data and correlate with external information.
Because the system is designed as a standards-based clinical data warehouse and supports standard interoperability profiles, it can also immediately incorporate any medical information from sensors, home medical devices, monitoring systems, labs, or hospital information systems. Moreover, this interoperability makes it possible to add new data sources or services at any time.
