- Offers 100% coverage of any GSM operator network, delivering social networking to any GSM operator in the world, creating access to over 4 billion consumers
BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS -- Myriad Group AG (SIX: MYRN), a global leader in mobile technology having shipped over 3.7 billion software applications on more than 2.2 billion phones, today announces the launch of Myriad Updates, a new text-based social networking service that makes mobile social networking, IM and email accessible to mass-market phone users. Myriad's Xumii platform is the first of its kind to enable operators to offer social networking services over USSD and SMS, creating new opportunities to reach an untapped market of over 4 billion consumers worldwide.
Myriad Updates uses the Xumii platform that powers services for Telefonica and other major operators. This enables deployment in just a matter of weeks, allowing operators the opportunity to monetize data services in a new way that is complementary to existing data offerings, and is open to all subscribers.
Using short codes through any mobile phone, subscribers who have no access to data can now connect to their favorite social networks, and stay in touch with their friends on Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and Flickr via Myriad Updates. The Xumii platform aggregates the most popular social networks into one single, operator-branded environment and enables subscribers to stay connected to these social networks without a data subscription and no need to download or install an application.
As mobile ownership is approximately three times higher than PC ownership in many developing countries (On Device Research Dec. 2010) and mobile social networking is on the rise with an expected one billion users by 2012 (eMarketer 2010), operators can now monetize this market with Myriad Updates by opening up social networking capabilities to all mobile subscribers.
"Hot on the heels of our partnership with Telefonica, Myriad will continue to react quickly to rising market demand to further expand the addressable market for operators. Through Myriad Updates, operators can enable mobile users with no access to data services, to connect with each other and the world around them for the first time," commented Simon Wilkinson, Myriad CEO.
As part of Myriad's recent Telefonica partnership to provide mobile social networking services to Telefonica's Movistar and Vivo brands, Myriad Xumii services will be made available to Telefonica's 140 million subscribers across 13 countries in Latin America.

Broadcom's New Combo Chip Integrates 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 + HS and FM to Bring New Multimedia Applications to Smartphones, Tablets and Other Mobile Devices
New Broadcom® BCM4330 Expands the Wireless Ecosystem by Enabling New Peer-to-Peer Applications, Wireless Sensors and Monitoring
BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Mobile World Congress -- Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced its newest wireless combination (combo) chip designed to support more media and data applications without impacting size or battery life for smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices. The BCM4330 integrates Broadcom's industry leading 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and FM radio technologies on a single silicon die providing significant cost, size, power and performance advantages over discrete semiconductor implementations, making it ideal for mobile devices.
By implementing emerging standards in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the BCM4330 will support new and exciting applications. For example, Broadcom's BCM4330 is the industry's first combo chip solution certified with the Bluetooth 4.0 standard that integrates Bluetooth low energy (BLE). BLE enables an ultra-low power implementation of Bluetooth technology, making the BCM4330 the ideal solution for systems that require very long battery life such as wireless sensors, medical and fitness monitoring devices. The BCM4330 also supports Wi-Fi Direct(TM) and Bluetooth High Speed which enable mobile devices to communicate directly with each other without having to connect first to an access point and be part of a traditional network, thus creating many new wireless device-to-device applications and usage models.
Broadcom continues to support every major operating system (OS) platform, from Microsoft Windows and Windows Phone to Google Chrome, Android and beyond, not only with the BCM4330, but with all Bluetooth, WLAN and GPS chipsets.
The BCM4330 is in production and will be demonstrated this week at the 2011 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
Highlights/Key Facts:
-- The Broadcom BCM4330 is a third generation combo chip device that
provides the highest level of integration for a mobile or handheld
wireless system, and includes IEEE 802.11 a/b/g and single-stream
802.11n (media access controller (MAC)/baseband/radio), Bluetooth 4.0 +
HS and FM radio receive and transmit functionality. It also features an
integrated Power Management Unit (PMU), Power Amplifiers (PAs), and a
Low Noise Amplifier (LNA) to address the needs of mobile devices that
require minimal power consumption and compact size.
-- The BCM4330 provides a small form-factor solution with minimal
external components to keep the cost down for mass volumes and allow
for flexibility in size, form-factor and functionality
-- The BCM4330's extreme integration reduces power consumption and
makes the overall solution size over 40 percent smaller than its
predecessor
-- Dual-band capabilities allow Wi-Fi users to leverage the less crowded 5
GHz spectrum for media applications that require faster guaranteed
bandwidth. To eliminate the cost and size barriers of adding dual-band
functionality to mobile devices, the BCM4330 integrates 2.4 GHz and 5
GHz power amplifiers, which can reduce bill-of-material (BOM) costs by
up to 75 cents while providing the same or better performance than
solutions using external power amplifiers.
-- Bluetooth 4.0, which contains BLE wireless technology, consumes only a
fraction of the power when compared to classic Bluetooth radios. BLE
enables many wireless sensor devices powered by small, coin-cell
batteries to operate for many years without having to replace the
battery. With the integration of BLE onto Broadcom combo chips,
smartphones and tablets powered by the BCM4330 will be able to more
effectively collect data from a variety of sensors such as those found
in pedometers and glucose monitors that require very low power
consumption.
-- Broadcom continues to support its widely deployed Bluetooth stack
and software for Android offering a carrier hardened stack, rich
with many Bluetooth profiles, which now includes BLE support for
next generation sensor applications
-- Broadcom's support for Wi-Fi Direct enables devices to communicate
directly with one another without having to interact with an access
point. This not only makes communication between devices simpler and
faster, but means devices can connect anywhere and anytime. With the
BCM4330 combo chip, portable devices are no longer limited to
communications within one single network and can move easily between
networks, establishing one-to-one connections on an as needed basis.
-- Bluetooth High Speed enables Bluetooth applications to be used over the
Wi-Fi connection and at Wi-Fi speeds. The user can connect ad hoc
devices using normal Bluetooth pairing and then the BCM4330 combo chip
can decide to run over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi depending on bandwidth
availability.
-- Broadcom offers support for Android and Windows Phone in its combo chip
products. Broadcom's OneDriver(TM) software stack is among the most
mature in the industry and includes source code that is part of the
generic Android and Windows Phone distribution. OneDriver software,
which is bundled with BCM4330 and other Wi-Fi and Bluetooth combo
products, reliably brings key emerging features to Android and Windows
based phones. These advanced features include:
-- Software and hardware support for WAPI -- the Chinese security
protocol that enables OEMs to address the growing market for
Internet connected handsets in China
-- In addition, both Android and Windows Phone distributions feature
support for 'Soft Access Point' - which allows the Wi-Fi component
in a client device (such as a notebook computer or smartphone) to
function as an access point enabling the sharing of wireless
broadband with other devices
-- The BCM4330 implements the industry's most advanced and proven radio
coexistence algorithms and hardware mechanisms to allow an extremely
collaborative WLAN and Bluetooth coexistence scheme internally, along
with external coexistence scheme support for additional wireless
technologies such as LTE and WiMax. As a result, enhanced overall
quality for simultaneous voice, video and data transmission is achieved
on a handheld system.
-- Additional features of the BCM4330 combo chip solution includes:
-- An integrated ARM® Cortex(TM)-M3 processor and on-chip memory for
complete WLAN subsystem functionality that minimizes the need to
wake-up the application processor for standard WLAN functions. This
allows for further minimization of power consumption, while
maintaining the ability to perform field upgrades with future
features
-- Broadcom's SmartAudio® technology offers Wide Band Speech (WBS),
Packet Loss Concealment (PLC) and Bit Error Correction (BEC) to
dramatically improve Bluetooth voice and audio quality
-- The BCM4330 is in production with volume shipments to phone manufactures
this quarter.
-- Tier one handset manufactures are announcing products this week at the
2011 Mobile World Congress that include the BCM4330 with product
shipments expected to occur in the upcoming months.

TOKYO, Feb. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Morpho, Inc., the global leader in software image processing solutions for mobile devices, announced on Feb. 14 the development of High Dynamic Range imaging technology (HDR technology) and rolling shutter distortion correction technology. These technologies operate on mobile handsets including Android (TM) devices.
About "Morpho HDR technology"
HDR technology compensates for clipped highlights in bright areas and clipped shadows in dark areas of high contrast images. Morpho, Inc.'s HDR technology creates an ideal image by using multiple images with different exposure times. The main feature of this technology is that Morpho's original motion compensation technology "SOFTGYRO (R)" eliminates the need for accessories such as tripods. In addition, ghosts of subjects are not captured due to subject blur compensation.
About "Morpho rolling shutter distortion correction technology"
Imaging devices with CMOS sensors that capture video are often hampered by the appearance of geometric distortions (rolling shutter distortion in the vertical direction or shear direction). Morpho's original video image stabilization technology "MovieSolid (R)" has been expanded to correct rolling shutter distortions in addition to video image stabilization in the horizontal and vertical directions.

Sybase 365 Extends Global Mobile IP Connectivity Between RIM's BlackBerry Infrastructure and Mobile Operators
Sybase IPX 365 Network Provides Mobile Operators with a Scalable, Reliable and Cost-Efficient Solution for Connecting to RIM's BlackBerry Infrastructure
BARCELONA, Spain, Feb. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- GSMA MOBILE WORLD CONGRESS 2011 -- Sybase 365, a subsidiary of Sybase, Inc., the global leader in mobile messaging and mobile commerce services, announced the availability of its comprehensive suite of IPX (IP eXchange) services for RIM's BlackBerry® Infrastructure. Sybase 365 provides connectivity between RIM's BlackBerry Infrastructure and mobile operators around the world using the secure private Sybase® IPX 365(TM) network. The global service gives mobile operators a scalable, reliable and cost-efficient solution for connecting to the BlackBerry Infrastructure.
The Sybase IPX 365 network is designed to serve both fixed and mobile network operators with the premium quality of service and security required in the conversion to IP networks. The full suite of IPX 365 services includes global data roaming (GRX), SMS and MMS messaging hubs, IPX Voice and roaming signalling --all run over a leading, high quality Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) network.
"With the proliferation of smartphones worldwide, connectivity is a key service for mobile operators, who historically had to connect their customers using international private circuits or through a secure tunnel over the public internet," said Howard Stevens, senior vice president, International Operations, Sybase 365. "By hosting connectivity to RIM's BlackBerry Infrastructure through an IPX network, which is vastly superior to the public internet, the service is more scalable and efficient."
Operator benefits of Sybase IPX service for connecting to RIM's BlackBerry Infrastructure include:
-- Service quality and availability - Sybase IPX 365 network is engineered
for high performance and resiliency. Contrary to private line circuits,
if there is a fault anywhere in the network, it will simply result in
packets being rerouted without loss of service. And unlike the Public
Internet, performance parameters for packet loss and latency are
guaranteed.
-- Security - Sybase IPX 365 network is completely isolated from the Public
Internet, providing a highly secure environment, designed and managed
according to best industry practice.
-- Scalability - Sybase's solution for connecting to RIM's BlackBerry
Infrastructure is highly scalable. Mobile operators can easily upgrade
the bandwidth within the capacity of the port at which they are
connected to the Sybase IPX 365 network.
-- Cost efficiency - Connectivity to RIM's BlackBerry Infrastructure is
provided as a separate VPN over the Sybase IPX 365 network, in addition
to the other IPX services including Sybase GRX 365, Sybase IPX Voice and
Roaming Signalling. This means a cost-efficient use of network
connectivity.

Super-Fast Broadband Possible For Everyone, Anywhere, As Bluwan Launches High-Speed, High-Capacity Backhaul And Access Solutions
BARCELONA, Spain, February 14, 2011/PRNewswire/ --
2011 is shaping up to be the year of super-fast broadband, as numerous
providers enhance their offerings in an attempt to bridge the digital divide.
Research from Point Topic (http://point-topic.com) highlighted the extent of
the divide, with urban areas of Britain scoring 67% on the Broadband
Infrastructure Index in mid-2010, whereas rural areas scored only 25%; a
figure that is set to increase(1). To reduce this gap, Bluwan
(http://www.bluwan.com), today announced its carrier grade, super-fast,
high-capacity Fibre Through The Air (FTTA(TM)) solution, enabling service
providers to dramatically increase network capacity and deploy next
generation services to areas where fibre cannot go.
Bluwan's FTTA(TM) technology has two main applications: mobile backhaul
and high speed broadband access, and is set to give consumers and businesses
reliable, consistent and cost-effective speeds of up to 100 Mbps in both
urban and rural areas. Bluwan's FTTA(TM) technology provides a high-capacity
solution for 3G and 4G networks, as well as wireless hotspots, enabling
superior download capacity(2) compared to existing broadband solutions.
Whilst Bluwan's technology offers a solution to the digital divide
problem, it also addresses the saturated urban mobile networks that require
more capacity to handle increased demand caused by consumers' use of
smartphones and multimedia applications. Music streaming, online gaming,
participating in a video conference and watching HDTV whilst downloading
large files puts a huge strain on operators' networks. By using new
technologies, such as FTTA(TM), network operators can immediately increase
their bandwidth, and future proof networks for ever-increasing usage and
growth, at a greatly reduced Total Cost of Ownership (TCO).
In addition, Bluwan's technology can also benefit businesses,
particularly those in the technology sector, which rely on higher capacity
broadband and reliable speeds to expand. 2010 highlighted the desire of
European governments to grow this sector, which is already worth an estimated
100 billion pounds Sterling to the UK economy,(3) with plans to invest a
further 200m pounds of equity finance for businesses. "Bluwan is really
exciting because it means emerging technology and media startups can access
true high-speed broadband - whether they're based in the Scottish Highlands
or a major city like London," said Elizabeth Varley, co-founder and CEO,
TechHub (http://www.techhub.com). "By providing a fast, wireless and reliable
alternative to fibre, Bluwan can help bridge the digital divide for small
businesses in a faster, greener and more cost-effective way."
Bluwan currently has two existing trials taking place with the City of
Paris (Paris Gigacom) and Orange Slovakia. Both trials use Bluwan's FTTA(TM)
technology to provide large areas with high speed broadband, demonstrating
long-range coverage, value for money, and fast deployment. By using FTTA(TM),
an operator doesn't need to dig up roads or trench fibre, thus saving costs
and time. They can install and deploy services within a six-month timeframe.
According to research by Trova Consulting (http://www.trovaconsulting.com),
commissioned by Bluwan, the cost of FTTA is significantly less than laying
fibre and compared to a 'Fibre to the Home' (FTTH) proposition, can cost up
to ten times less per subscriber.
"Currently, operators are unable to make an adequate profit when
deploying super-fast broadband in areas with insufficient demand. Solving
this problem requires government intervention, which can be seen with
initiatives like Digital Britain, as well as a disruptive force to enable a
change in economic models," said Jean-Francois Galey-Sand, CEO, Bluwan.
"Bluwan aims to be this force, disrupting the economics of broadband, making
it a viable solution for service providers, resulting in a healthy return on
investment, whilst ensuring consumers receive a more reliable, robust and
high-speed service in return."
Figures from Mobile Insights Europe in 2010 showed that by using a
solution like Bluwan's(4) for backhaul, savings in comparison to fibre
leasing will equate to around $2.8 billion per year by 2014. This figure will
likely rise to an incredible $248 billion in comparison to current widely
used broadband solutions.(5)
If you would like more information, Bluwan will be at
Mobile World Congress in Hall 2, stand #2F33 at the Fira from the 14th - 17th
February. We will also be hosting cocktails and canapes on the stand every
evening from 5pm onwards, so please come and join us. For more information on
Bluwan, please go to http://www.bluwan.com, and check out our demonstration

About Bluwan
Established in 2005, Bluwan was co-founded by Francois Magne, Pierre
Lagoutte and the Thales Group (http://www.thalesgroup.com), a world leader in
mission-critical information systems for defence and security, aerospace and
transportation. A privately owned company, Bluwan's solutions are the
culmination of several years of research and development.
Bluwan delivers a paradigm shift by providing carrier-grade multi-gigabit
wireless solutions with fibre-like speeds and capacity, allowing service
providers to increase existing network capacity (42 GHz and 12GHz spectrums)
and deploy multimedia services at a fraction of the cost of deploying optical
fibre in those hard to reach areas. Bluwan's FTTA technology has two main
applications: mobile backhaul and high-speed broadband access.
Bluwan has deployed several pilots in France and in Europe, and has been
awarded sizeable subsidies in government sponsored competitive programs, to
develop very compact radios and antennas for CEPT 12 GHz and 42 GHz radio
frequencies.

Cisco Sales Corp® to Introduce the Digi-Piggy® at 2011 Toy Fair in New York, Booth #5956
TORRANCE, Calif., Feb. 12, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Cisco Sales Corp®will introduce Digi-Piggy®, a unique coin collector and counter - the ultimate alternative to sofa cushion surfing - at Booth 5956 at the 108th Toy Fair, February 13-16, 2011 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City.
With an innovative digital readout on the pig's snout, the Digi-Piggy counts all American coins and keeps a running total, regardless of the order or the value of the coins inserted. Ideal for young children as a financial educational toy, for college students who always need Laundromat and vending machine coins or adults in constant search of those valuable parking meter quarters, Digi-Piggy is a great product for every member of the family. The clear body shows your growing savings.
Available online through the Cisco Sales website at http://digipiggy.com/order, company President and CEO Neil Kay has targeted Q3 2011 for retail distribution through major chains including Kohl's, Wal-Mart, Bed Bath and Beyond and others.
Constructed of highly-durable plastic, Digi-Piggy is designed with longevity, functionality and safety in mind. A twist-off lid provides for simple withdrawal of savings, while the digital snout renders accurate up-to-the penny readouts, perfect for youngsters who are saving with a particular financial goal or purchase item in mind.
Categorized for children aged three and older, Digi-Piggy effectively demonstrates the importance and benefits of savings. Teachers and parents alike have used the Digi-Piggy to show children how to save money. In the classroom, students can learn how to recognize the dollar and cent symbols as well as the concept of decimal notation. At home, children can see how spare change, money earned for chores, and coins uncovered found the family sofa (or dad's pockets!!!) can add up as the total amount on the LCD display increases. The Digi-Piggy serves as a great tool for children to learn the value of saving for something they want or need by providing a personal appreciation for and connection with the money they earn.
"The classic piggy bank is the universal symbol for saving money, and we have modernized it and added features to make the Digi-Piggy an educational experience with every transaction," said Kay. "Digi-Piggyprovides children with a solid foundation formath and money saving skills that will allow them to grasp more complex concepts later in life."
As for the product Kay says, that's distinctive as well. "The LCD snout and the ability to see the coins inside the belly of the product give the Digi-Piggy necessary flair that differentiates it from competition."
While Digi-Piggy® represents Cisco USA's most recent product release, it's only the tip of the Cisco iceberg. Other products include a three-position 123 Miracle Knife Sharpener®, innovative promotional items, custom coolers, mini lights, a full line of wood products, electronics, custom bar gear, outdoor chairs, flash memory drives, digital picture frames, tote bags, custom molds, apparel, bobble head toys and more. "While the introduction of the Digi-Piggy demonstrates our company's commitment to product excellence and detail, it also serves to showcase our expansion and growth as a company," said Kay. "To us, that's a significant breakthrough."
Cisco Sales Corp was created in 1977 by President and CEO Neil Kay. This innovative product line provides a range of different items with widespread appeal to individuals of all ages all over the world. With a primary corporate goal of "sourcing the world" to deliver consistent quality with their products, Cisco is fully committed to their products' reliability, and low price, while also offering a great experience. Activision to Unveil Skylanders Spyro's Adventure(TM) - a Breakthrough New Play Experience that Merges the World of Toys and Video Games -at the 2011 American International Toy Fair
Innovative New Game Lets You "Bring Your Toys to Life"
Company Announces Global Marketing Partnership with Toys"R"Us
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Activision Publishing, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) announced today the worldwide debut of Skylanders Spyro's Adventure, an entertainment breakthrough for the toy and video game industries. Through an innovative use of technology, the game allows players to transport real-world toys into virtual worlds of adventure through the "Portal of Power(TM)." These "toys with brains" can come to life inside the game in connection with multiple gaming platforms, as well as on handheld gaming devices, mobile devices and on the web, remembering achievements and level-ups wherever they go. This marks a wholesale change in the interaction between toys and video games, opening up new possibilities and revenue streams for both industries.

"By pairing world-class character design, world-class video game design and world-class story telling into one entertainment experience, we've given players a whole new genre that bridges the gap between the real and virtual worlds. From the first time a kid picked up a stick and pretended it was a sword, toys have unlocked kids' imaginations. And how often have you wanted to bring those toys to life, to see them become animated and take them on an adventure? Skylanders Spyro's Adventure does just that."
This new interactive experience will make its worldwide debut and be available for demos at the American International Toy Fair (Booth #3055), which takes place February 13 - 16 at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City.
Activision brought its gaming expertise together with top Hollywood creative talent to bring Skylanders Spyro's Adventure to life. The game and technology was developed by Activision's Novato, California studio, Toys for Bob, led by creative director and studio head, Paul Reiche. The adventure driven story was penned by two of the Academy Award nominated writers of the original Toy Story movie, Alec Sokolow and Joel Cohen. The result is a line of highly collectible characters, an engaging story, and an immersive interactive entertainment experience.
There are many unique and innovative elements to this experience, including:
-- Each Character Has its Own Unique Powers - In addition to the highly
collectible design and personalities of the toys themselves, each
character has different powers and abilities, opening different
experiences inside the game. Players can drop in and out of each level
with as many different characters as they like, making each players
experience unique.
-- Toys With Brains - Each toy/character remembers the player's shared
experiences. Achievements and leveled up capabilities earned in the game
are embedded inside the toy and travel with the toy. Wherever the toy
goes, its experiences go with it.
-- Portal of Power - The Portal of Power serves as the gateway between our
world and the amazing world of the characters in Skylanders Spyro's
Adventure.
-- Play With Friends - By placing two characters on the Portal of Power at
once, players can team up together for cooperative play, or face off in
player versus player battle arenas utilizing their leveled up
characters.
-- Diverse Experiences on Diverse Devices - While the toys can be used with
gaming consoles to play the disc based game, completely different gaming
experiences await them on the mobile app and inside the Web World, each
of which were designed specifically for those platforms. The result is a
remarkable number of different gaming experiences in one game.
To support the launch of the game, Toys"R"Us will join forces with Activision for a global marketing partnership in which stores across the globe will feature several Skylanders Spyro's Adventure exclusives this fall.
"We began discussing this concept with Activision and immediately knew merging the world of toys and video games together in Skylanders Spyro's Adventure would capture the imagination of a wide range of consumers, including kids, toy collectors and video game enthusiasts," said Jerry Storch, Chairman and CEO, Toys"R"Us, Inc. "We believe this product line is among the most exciting and unique offerings that will be seen at Toy Fair this year, and we are excited to partner with Activision to bring Skylanders Spyro's Adventure to Toys"R"Us stores this fall."
Skylanders Spyro's Adventure lets kids take on the role of a powerful Portal Master, who can control over 30 different characters, including the beloved purple dragon Spyro. Each of these heroes is a protector of an amazing, mysterious world, but they have been ejected from their world by the sinister Portal Master known as Kaos and now they are frozen in our world as toys. Only the players of Skylanders Spyro's Adventure can get them back into their world, by embarking on a fantastical journey where they will explore mythical lands, battle menacing, outlandish creatures, collect treasures, and solve challenging puzzles as a part of the quest to save their world.
Skylanders Spyro's Adventure is developed by Toys For Bob, an Activision studio located in Novato, California. The game is not yet rated by the ESRB. For more information, visit http://www.skylandersgame.com

SOI Industry Consortium Announces FD-SOI Technology Offers Substantial Power Advantages for Next-generation Mobile and Consumer Applications
BOSTON, February 11, 2011/PRNewswire/ --
- FD-SOI Reduces Power Consumption and Significantly Improves
Performance at a Competitive Cost
The SOI Industry Consortium today announced results of an assessment and
characterization of Fully-Depleted Silicon-on-Insulator (FD-SOI) technology,
demonstrating that this advanced CMOS silicon technology is well suited to
address the increasing low-power, high-performance requirements for mobile
and consumer applications. A joint collaboration between Consortium
members-ARM, GLOBALFOUNDRIES, IBM, STMicroelectronics, Soitec, and
CEA-Leti-has demonstrated key benefits of planar FD-SOI technology for these
applications based on an ARM processor. Planar FD-SOI technology enables
substantial improvements in performance and power consumption for
next-generation mobile devices, delivering high-performance applications with
rich multimedia and communications functionality, reduced power consumption
and improved battery life.
As SoC designs increase in complexity to deliver the enhanced features
required by today's mobile consumer, designers face the challenge of
continuing to reduce the voltage while maintaining the stability of the SRAM
bit-cells. Early benchmarks on FD-SOI technology demonstrate the ability to
reduce the SRAM operating voltage by 100-150mV, thereby reducing memory power
consumption up to 40 percent while maintaining the stability of the SRAM.
Using an ARM Cortex(TM) processor as a prototyping vehicle, a team of SOI
Industry Consortium members demonstrated that planar FD-SOI technology
enables designers to continue to decrease the voltage to reduce the overall
power, while maintaining system performance.
The inherent benefits of FD-SOI can also significantly improve system
performance as you transition from generation to generation. Traditionally,
low-power manufacturing technology processes from one generation node to
another yield a performance gain ranging from 20 percent to 30 percent. This
assessment indicates that when the same transition also includes FD-SOI
technology an additional 80 percent gain can be achieved beyond the
traditional increase. This level of improvement can enable higher-performance
handheld products while significantly reducing the overall system power,
which translates into a superior user experience.
FD-SOI also provides a compelling manufacturing advantage compared to
other potential solutions. Due to its advanced starting substrate, FD-SOI
wafer processing is simpler for the chip manufacturer. The elimination of a
considerable number of mask layers during transistor-formation processing
drives simpler manufacturing process flow, and thereby a cost-efficient
approach to further shrinking CMOS transistors.
"Through our collaboration, Consortium members have demonstrated the
advantages of FD-SOI for mobile and consumer applications," said Horacio
Mendez, Executive Director of the SOI Industry Consortium. "FD-SOI is a great
option to improve the key metrics for mobile markets: power, frequency,
manufacturability and most importantly cost efficiency."
"This implementation indicates that FD-SOI technology is an attractive
alternative for those designing SoCs for advanced mobile devices," said Simon
Segars, Executive Vice President and General Manager, ARM, Physical IP
Division. "It also demonstrates a significant opportunity for our customers
to produce leading low-power, high-performance consumer devices, while
potentially lowering their system cost."
"FD-SOI represents a tremendous technology opportunity for low-power
mobile designs," said Dr. Suresh Venkatesan, Vice President, Technology
Development, GLOBALFOUNDRIES. "FD-SOI offers a number of potential benefits
through simplified manufacturing integration and a compelling power and
frequency proposition."
SOI, recognized as a green semiconductor technology, has been in
high-volume manufacturing for over a decade, enabling high-performance
computing, gaming and communications products, with hundreds of millions of
SOI chips shipped. FD-SOI also allows for full design re-usability: all
established design tools and methodologies are fully implementable. SOI wafer
manufacturers have affirmed that the ultra-thin SOI wafers needed for FD-SOI
meet all specifications and are ready for high-volume manufacturing.
"As the Chairman of the SOI Consortium, I am extremely excited about the
potential that the FD-SOI technology can bring to the industry. The testing
and modeling to date would indicate that FD-SOI offers an ideal combination
to achieve ultra-low-power, high-performance and cost-effective
manufacturability attributes. The consortium members are all working together
on the development and technology evaluations, with assistance from process
R&D, IP design, manufacturing members and the substrate suppliers," said
Michael Cadigan, Chairman of the SOI Industry Consortium and General Manager,
IBM Microelectronics, Systems & Technology Group.
SOI Consortium Executives will be available to discuss the results at the
Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, 14-17 February 2011. Please contact
Camille Darnaud-Dufour, camille.darnaud-dufour@soiconsortium.org or Horacio
Mendez, hmendez@soiconsortium.org to arrange an appointment.

Dataupia Brings Enterprise-Class High Availability to Real-Time Platform for Big Data Analytics
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Feb. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Dataupia Corporation today announces the latest version of the Satori Server, its award-winning data warehouse appliance. Release 4.0 delivers the superior levels of performance, availability, and resilience required by mission-critical operations that rely on real-time analysis of large amounts of data. The release includes patent-pending mirroring and backup/restore technology specifically designed for a massively parallel processing (MPP) platform ensuring that maintaining an always-available, Large Enterprise Data(TM) system is practical and cost-effective.
With this release Dataupia launches an appliance designed on Dell servers that has the strongest price/performance ratio in the marketplace. Dell servers offer the flexibility required to configure hardware to support MPP scalability and robustness for Large Enterprise Data (LED).
Dataupia's distinguished engineering team leveraged the benefits of Dell's state-of-the-art hardware to deliver a highly sophisticated unified appliance to address the most demanding LED challenges. The 4.0 Satori Server has a scan rate of 70 GB per second and the capacity for 1 Petabyte of compressed user data per 42U cabinet. The largest Satori deployment to date is a 5 Petabyte, fully mirrored production system.
"It might seem counter-intuitive," said Tracy Taylor, VP of Engineering for Dataupia, "but we wanted to take the 'specialness' out of MPP so that data centers can follow their existing management processes, including making snapshots and having choices for backing up within the Satori Server, to SAN storage, or ultimately to tape. A lot of effort went into making complex MPP backup-and-recovery seem routine."
Ray Green, Managing Director, Focus, reported, "Dataupia's Dell solution is as easy and simple as Dataupia's earlier Satori Servers to set up and run. The new backup and snapshot capabilities are a natural and welcome progression to simplify the tedious task of backing up massive amounts of data."
The impetus for Release 4.0 is a shift in the data warehouse appliance's role in the enterprise as it moves from supporting specialized analysis in a historic or predictive mode to running in tandem with front-line operations.
Foster Hinshaw, Dataupia's Founder and CEO observed, "Our customers are managing network interconnect revenue, intercepting defects, delivering traffic updates, and detecting fraud--live, in real-time, 24x7. MPP appliance technology is evolving to enable these mission-critical applications and meet LED requirements for performance and robustness."
About Dataupia
Dataupia brings a strong record of industry leadership to addressing the growing gap between the massive volumes of stored data and the portion that a business can use to its benefit. By architecting specialized software and industry-standard hardware into a highly cost-effective and intelligent appliance, Dataupia's solution will amplify an organization's existing information systems to provide deeper access into their data universe and more comprehensive business insight. FSTech Receives Final System Acceptance for SR-91 Express Lanes Upgrade Project
IRVINE, Calif., Feb. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Federal Signal Technologies (FSTech) today announced it has received Final System Acceptance for its upgrade of the in-lane toll collection system infrastructure on the 91 Express Lanes in Southern California. This upgrade project commenced in March, 2010.
The 91 Express Lanes is comprised of two 10-mile toll lanes in each direction in the median of California's Riverside Freeway (SR-91) between the Orange/Riverside county line and Costa Mesa Freeway (SR-55). This facility was the world's first fully automated, all-electronic tolling facility and the first application of variable value pricing based on traffic volume in the United States.
The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) awarded a contract to Sirit to implement a major system replacement in 2003. In March 2010, OCTA awarded a second contract to Sirit, now a FSTech company, to perform a complete upgrade to the latest state-of-the-art RFID technology. These modernized RFID readers will enable OCTA to utilize the advanced features of new switchable FasTrak(TM) transponders to be deployed as part of the LA Metro HOT ExpressLanes project. The enhancement also included digital automatic license plate recognition (ALPR) camera systems supplied by PIPS Technology, another FSTech business, for video enforcement of violators.
The FasTrak(TM) transponder -- a radio frequency identification (RFID) device mounted to the inside of a vehicle's windshield -- enables customers of the 91 Express Lanes to pay tolls from pre-paid accounts simply by driving in the lanes. This electronic toll collection technology ensures the free flow of traffic by eliminating the need to stop and pay tolls at traditional tollbooths.
"We are pleased to have successfully completed the project on time and on budget to meet the goals of OCTA and prepare the SR-91 for the future by deploying the latest proven RFID and camera technology. We also appreciate the opportunity to continue our successful relationship with a premier customer like OCTA. The support and confidence from OCTA was instrumental in completing this upgrade project. The SR-91 Express Lanes toll collection facility continues to be the industry's benchmark for system design and overall system performance," commented Manfred Rietsch, President of Federal Signal Technologies.
"The FSTech/Sirit team once again did a remarkable job for OCTA in completing the lane system upgrade on time and on budget while continuing to exceed the specifications for overall system performance and reliability. With the completion of this upgrade project, the 91 Express Lanes is positioned to take advantage of future technological developments and continue providing our patrons with the highest levels of service and convenience for years to come," said Kirk Avila, General Manager of the 91 Express Lanes.

Applications can be built once and deployed across disparate computing platforms
ARMONK, N.Y., Feb. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced new software that is redefining the way enterprise customers manage the design and delivery of applications across disparate computing landscapes. The new software helps organizations reduce IT and administration overhead through a single, integrated development platform to help enterprises unify both new and legacy systems.
Software development teams continue to be challenged by escalating IT administration costs, security access control issues, and working with multiple systems in the data center. According to a recent IBM study, the single application development environment can yield up to a 20 percent gain in productivity while protecting legacy investments and progressively managing and integrating new system advancements.
With today's news, IBM is delivering a single, integrated software development platform to help enterprises unify their multi-system environments. IBM can now help software development teams design, develop, test, deploy and manage software forthe IBM zEnterprise System, across multiple operating systems and languages in a single, consolidated effort.
With new software support for the IBM zEnterprise System, IBM clients in financial services, government, telecommunications and any industry operating core business processes on a mainframe, can experience a truly integrated hardware and software delivery platform. This platform can now span the entire enterprise, supporting zEnterprise mainframe and select IBM Power7 and workload optimized systems, as well as the IBM Smart Analytics Optimizer, yielding a tightly configured, integrated data center environment. Later this year, IBM will deliver support for select System x servers. Applications created in Java, for example, can be deployed in an AIX environment without changing code or server specifications. Organizations no longer have to maintain duplicate environments for application development across various platforms, and now have the flexibility to move workloads around without having to worry about moving development teams and infrastructure.
Enterprise Application Lifecycle Management
A company needs to focus on the flow of people, process and artifacts across the development disciplines. It's entirely possible to have analysts who expertly manage requirements, developers who develop excellent code, and testers who find defects, and still fail at the project overall if these activities are disconnected from each other, or disconnected from the business.
The new IBM solutions include the Rational Developer for System z Family and the Rational Asset Analyzer Family. These software development offerings bring higher productivity through modern integrated development and test environments for mainframe development and zEnterprise support. Additionally, the new Rational Business Developer simplifies innovation by enabling application development on multiple mainframe platforms with EGL, an open business application development language. New capabilities for Rational Team Concert help bring together development organizations by providing a common solution for planning, reporting, change and configuration management.
The new IBM solutions for zEnterprise will help enterprise clients:
-- Increase organizational agility - Teams now have a single end-to-end
view of an application project, with improved knowledge and
understanding of how the mainframe and Power Systems technology-based
applications interact, as well as awareness of what other developers are
doing that could affect them - all in real time.
-- Reduce development complexity and cost - Using a common multi platform
development and test environment, regardless of computing platform,
means all of the developers have the same view of the application code,
from either the front-end Web interface or the back-end

Trustmark National Bank Moves to Online Banking
Trustmark National Bank, based in Jackson, Mississippi, is a subsidiary of Trustmark Corporation, a diversified financial services company with $9.2 billion in assets. Trustmark needed to give their customers real-time access to their accounts through the web. However, rewriting program code would make the project riskier, slower and more costly. Trustmark turned to IBM Rational Developer for System z to extend its key banking applications to a browser-based environment with no rewriting of code or program logic. Leveraging its original investment in reliable, business-tested applications, the company avoided the expense, time and risk of recoding while helping staff work faster and smarter.
"Now our customers can access up-to-the minute account information and handle most all of their banking needs through our on-line banking system," said Paul Williams, Director of IT, Trustmark National Bank, "Using Rational Developer for System z and the IBM CICS Transaction Server Service Flow feature was a great time savings."
The project also delivered efficient self-service for the bank's customers, allowing them the ease and convenience of banking online, and allowed Trustmark to retain its investment in reliable, business-tested, existing applications.
Additionally, IBM business partners have developed solutions supporting Rational Team Concert to bring added value to clients for complex systems test integration, automated code review, database release management and connections for heterogeneous tool environments, for example. Several IBM Business Partners have announced integrated solutions for Rational Team Concert, continuing the expansion of the Jazz platform.

Best HD Desire Deals at Mobiles.co.uk Declares Which Magazine
LONDON, Feb. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- If you are looking for the best HTC Desire HD deals then the internet should be flooded with options. This is a high end Android 2.2 smartphone which packs a class-leading 4.3 inch touchscreen display and this is why it manages to live up to its name. The good news is that HTC Desire deals do not need to cost the earth and independent consumer organisation Which? has shown that Mobiles.co.uk is the site which provides the most cost-effective pay monthly deal for this appealing handset.
When looking for the best HTC Desire HD deals you will need to consider a number of factors. Many people simply look at the flat monthly cost and assume that the offer which has the cheapest regular price will offer the best value for money. This is usually a false assumption because there are all kinds of variables to take into account and to find the true monthly cost you will need to perform a few calculations, although sites such as Which? get this done for you.
Typically the best HTC Desire deals will have a low monthly cost in combination with an inexpensive handset price. For example, the best deal currently ranked by Which? shows that for 10 pounds Sterling a month you can get a Desire HD handset for a penny under 320 pounds and continue to pay this low price for 24 months on Vodafone. For your money you get 100 minutes and 500 inclusive texts to use as you see fit. By adding the monthly cost to the phone's initial price you will find that you will be paying a little over 23 pounds in real terms each month for the duration of the contract.
The important thing to remember about seeking the best HTC Desire HD deals is that you will rarely find a network provider that is able to improve upon an offer from an independent online source. Whether it is through line rental reductions, CashBack inclusions or impressive inclusive extras the major networks are all lagging behind the likes of Mobiles.co.uk and this is clearly demonstrated by the superiority of its Desire HD deals. Given the amount of cash an average consumer will invest in a deal over time making these small savings will mount up to a big pay-off.
These offers are available now! We hope you'll agree that these discounts combined with one of the slickest Android handsets should tick all the boxes and then some. Visit mobiles.co.uk/ to see the Nexus S best deals our full range of tariffs and discounts for the Nexus S and keep checking the blog for updates on anything mobile.
Mobiles.co.uk is a pure play contract phone and pay as you go mobile provider. Top mobile phone manufacturers currently sold through mobiles.co.uk include the latest Sony Ericsson mobile phones and HTC mobile phones including the HTC desire. Landmark 'Do Not Track Me' Bill to Block Unwanted Spying on the Internet, Says Consumer Watchdog
WASHINGTON, Feb. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- "Do Not Track Me" legislation introduced in Congress today by Rep. Jackie Speier, D-CA, will let consumers block unwanted tracking of their information online, said the nonprofit Consumer Watchdog at a press conference today with the bill author and consumer and privacy advocates.
The bill authorizes the Federal Trade Commission to enact and enforce regulations that would give consumers a right to block companies from tracking their activities as they use the Internet. The concept is analogous to the popular "Do Not Call" list that prevents advertisers from calling consumers who do not wish to be disturbed by telemarketing.
"Consumers should have the right to choose if their private information - from shoe size, to health concerns, to religious beliefs - is collected, analyzed and profiled by companies tracking activities online. Do Not Track is the simple way for consumers to say 'no thanks' to being monitored while they surf the web," said Carmen Balber, Washington director for Consumer Watchdog.
Rep. Speier's bill is the first in Congress to explicitly provide for a Do Not Track mechanism.
"Right now much of the online advertising market is based on unauthorized spying on consumers," said John M. Simpson, director of Consumer Watchdog's Inside Google Project. "A Do Not Track mechanism would give consumers better control of their information and help restore their confidence in the Internet. That's a win-win for consumers and business. What kind of lasting business can be built on snooping on your customers?"
A poll by Consumer Watchdog last summer found that 80% of Americans support a Do Not Track option. A USA Today/Gallup poll released this week found that most Americans are worried about their privacy and security when they use Facebook and Google.
Consumer Watchdog noted that Do Not Track legislation does not solve all online privacy issues, but must be an option for consumers to have a fundamental right to privacy online.
Online privacy is one of the few issues that appears to have bipartisan backing in Congress, said Consumer Watchdog, and urged members to approve Do Not Track legislation this year.
Interest in Do Not Track legislation increased after the FTC issued a report in December backing the concept. David Vladeck, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection testified to Congress that a Do Not Track mechanism was both feasible and enforceable. FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz recently wrote:
"We also believe, as do most American businesses, that no company loses by respecting the wishes of its customers. Do Not Track will allow the Internet to continue to thrive while protecting our basic right to privacy when we travel in cyberspace."
Other legislators are working on privacy legislation. In the House Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Il., introduced a general online privacy bill Thursday and Rep. Cliff Stearns, R-Fl., is expected to offer legislation soon. In the Senate, Sen. John Kerry, D-Ma., is working on a bill, while Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ar. has been considering offering Do Not Track legislation.
Comments on the FTC's report on privacy, "Protecting Consumer Privacy in an Era of Rapid Change: A Proposed Framework for Businesses and Policymakers," are due next Friday, Feb. 18.
Consumer Watchdog has been working to protect consumers' online privacy rights and educate them about the issues through its Inside Google Project. The goal has been to convince Google of the social and economic importance of giving consumers control over their online lives. By persuading Google, the Internet's leading company, to adopt adequate guarantees, its policies could become the gold standard for privacy for the industry, potentially improving the performance of the entire online sector.

The bilingual apps provide moms and children with hours of entertainment and fun, and can be easily found in iTunes' App store by using the keyword "Todobebe" or the names in Spanish: TodoFotos, TodoColores, and Oir+Aprender.
TodoColores teaches colors to children in Spanish and Portuguese. Two Strangulation Deaths Prompt Summer Infant to Recall Video Baby Monitors with Cords; Firm to Provide New On-Product Label & Instructions
WASHINGTON, Feb. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Summer Infant Inc., of Woonsocket, R.I., is announcing the voluntary recall to provide new on-product label and instructions for about 1.7 million video baby monitors with electrical cords. The cords can present a strangulation hazard to infants and toddlers if placed too close to a crib. Because of this serious strangulation risk, parents and caregivers should never place these and other corded cameras within three feet of a crib.
Over the past year, CPSC and the firm have received reports of two strangulation deaths of infants with the electrical cords of Summer Infant video baby monitors. In March 2010, a 10-month-old girl from Washington, D.C. strangled in her crib in the electrical cord of a Summer Infant video monitor. The monitor camera had been placed on top of the crib rail.
In November 2010, CPSC received a report of a six-month-old boy from Conway, S.C., who strangled in the electrical cord of a baby monitor placed on the changing table attached to the crib. In January 2011, CPSC learned the product involved was a Summer Infant video baby monitor.
CPSC and the firm are also aware of a near strangulation incident in which a 20-month-old boy from Pittsburg, Pa. was found in his crib with the camera cord wrapped around his neck. The Summer Infant monitor camera was mounted on the wall, but the child was still able to reach the cord. He was freed from the cord without serious injury.
Summer Infant has initiated a campaign to provide new on-product labels for electric cords and instructions to consumers with the recalled video monitors distributed between January 2003 and February 2011. The baby monitors were sold at major retailers, mass merchandisers, and juvenile products stores nationwide for between $60 and $300. They were sold in more than 40 different models, including handheld, digital, and color video monitors. All video monitors include both the camera (placed in the baby's room) and the hand held device (some models have 2 hand-held devices) which enable the caregiver to see and/or hear the baby from a specific distance. The brand "Summer" is found on the product.
The product was manufactured in China.
CPSC and Summer Infant urge parents to immediately check the location of the video monitors, including cameras mounted on the wall, and all electric cords to make sure the cords are out of arm's reach of their child. Consumers should contact Summer Infant toll-free at (800) 426-8627 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET Monday through Friday or visit the firm's website at http://www.summerinfant.com/Home/Product-Recall.aspx to receive a new permanent electric cord warning label about the strangulation risk and revised instructions about how to safely mount camera and keep cords out of child's reach.
In October 2010, CPSC issued a safety alert warning consumers that there had been six reports of strangulation in baby monitor cords since 2004. Since that alert the number of death reports has risen to seven. CPSC has revised the safety alert Infants Can Strangle in Baby Monitor Cords.
CPSC is interested in receiving incident or injury reports that are either directly related to these product recall or involve a different hazard with the same product. Please tell us about it by visiting https://www.cpsc.gov/cgibin/incident.aspx.

MWC Barcelona Hall 1 B 39 -- At this year's Mobile World Congress,
OPTICOM premieres a range of OEM products implementing POLQA, a new voice
quality test method just adopted as International Standard ITU-T P.863 in
January 2011. The global provider for voice and video testing technology will
also present results of the very first field evaluation which employed the
new standard technique to benchmark real life mobile-to-mobile call quality,
throughout Germany, including the four major mobile operators. The data was
originally gathered for a Quality-of-Experience benchmark published by the
popular 'connect' magazine, which elects Germany's best mobile network
operator once a year. Together with P3 Communications, the engineering
service provider behind the tests, OPTICOM investigated the application of
POLQA/P.863 and unveils the first observations.
POLQA represents the next-generation of voice quality testing technology
for fixed, mobile and IP-based networks and can be applied to HD Voice, 3G
and 4G/LTE. POLQA will be the successor for PESQ/P.862, which has evolved as
the most successful industry standard for voice testing with more than 20,000
licensed test systems used in mobile networks around the globe.
OPTICOM's CTO and standards developer Dipl.-Ing. Christian Schmidmer
says: "One of the most motivating experiences is hearing experts in the field
already recognising POLQA as a major step forward for optimizing next-gen
mobile communications. POLQA performs up to 56% better than PESQ, opens new
application areas and eliminates weak points, encountered with other
methods."
During the development of the new POLQA standard, more than 100,000
fixed, mobile and VoIP test calls were gathered by experts from all over the
world, thus representing the largest and most accurate database ever used in
the development of a perceptual quality algorithm. The POLQA perceptual
measurement algorithm is a joint development of OPTICOM, SwissQual and TNO,
made available as licensed software for various platforms.
Also available at this year's MWC premiere, OPTICOM offers its POLQA
Q-App in a mobile form factor for Android Smartphones. The Q-App
implementation of POLQA runs as fast as real-time on commercially available
Smartphones and complements OPTICOM's PESQ/P.862 Q-App for Android, Symbian
and Windows Mobile.
Right from the start, OPTICOM offers mobile manufacturers, T&M vendors
and operators tailored OEM license programs for standard setting POLQA
reference implementations.
About OPTICOM
OPTICOM GmbH is the leading vendor for Voice, Audio and Video quality
measurement technology and OEM products for the analysis of Mobile and
IP-based networks. Since its foundation as a spin-off from Fraunhofer's MP3
development team, the pioneers in perceptual quality testing have
continuously been providing International world-class standards for
audiovisual quality evaluation, including PESQ, PEAQ and PEVQ, and now also
source POLQA.
For 15 years, the Perceptual Quality Experts from Germany have been
striving to evangelize a growing community of soft- and hardware developers,
network operators and quality assurance people, how to properly assess
digital networks, carrying Voice, high-quality Audio and Video.
OPTICOM's proven OEM technology can be found in most state-of-the-art
products, including the Who's Who of the Test &Measurement and Telecom's
industry.
