    The vehicle sharing process is simple. On a dedicated site,

A team of volunteers will help flood victims in the Nashville area by providing home repairs and making houses safer, more accessible and energy efficient. Homeowners qualifying for the program must meet Rebuilding Together Nashville's five partnership criteria. They include:

    --  Homeowners must be low-income, earning 80 percent of the median income
        or less.
    --  Homes must be single-family residences.
    --  No property taxes can be owed on these residences.
    --  Homes must be permanent, free-standing structures.
    --  Homes must be remediated and ready for rebuilding and to accept
        volunteers.

Google Releases WebP Image Format

Google has released a new image format for the web. It is called "WebP" and it originates from the WebM video codec. It also looks worse than JPG images in the examples. I guess they need to work on the encoder a bit more.

Most of the common image formats on the web today were established over a decade ago and are based on technology from around that time. As part of this effort, we are releasing a developer preview of a new image format, WebP, that promises to significantly reduce the byte size of photos on the web, allowing web sites to load faster than before.

If I had to guess, I would suspect this would be a push to incorporate WebP decoders into smartphones and such to allow faster browsing... When that happens, Google's WebM video codec has an easy entry since the frames can be decoded by the WebP decoding hardware. Win-win for Google.

Environmentally Friendly Option Offers Value and Community Support

BASKING RIDGE, N.J., Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Wireless today announced the launch of the Verizon Wireless Trade-In Program, which allows customers from any wireless carrier to get value from no-longer-used wireless devices and help the environment at the same time. 

Customers who participate in the Trade-In Program will submit their devices for appraisal online at http://www.trade-in.vzw.com and receive a postage-paid envelope to mail in the devices.  In exchange for trading in their devices, customers may receive a Verizon Wireless gift card by mail.  The amount of the gift card will be based on the make, model and condition of the device and can be used toward the purchase of phones and accessories or to pay Verizon Wireless bills.  Devices that have no appraised value can still be sent in for recycling.

Multi-Bank. The enhancement significantly enriches the solution for

PARIS, October 1, 2010/PRNewswire-FirstCall/ --     The new Volkswagen Touran and Sharan are to be equipped with
the latest generation of Valeo's semi-automatic parking system, Park4U(R).

    Park4U(R) uses ultrasonic sensors located in the front and
rear bumpers to precisely calculate the length of the parking slot available,
and automatically maneuvers the car into the slot.

    The new version needs only 40 cm of clearance at either end of
the vehicle to be able to park, a reduction of 43% compared to the first
generation, made possible by a more sophisticated geometric calculation. In
addition, steering assistance no longer ends when the car first goes into
reverse, but continues to help the driver until the vehicle is parked,
however many maneuvers may be necessary for a short parking slot.

    Park4U(R) also allows the motorist to exit a parking space,
even if it is very tight (25 cm at either end). It assesses the space
available in front and behind the vehicle, and calculates the most
appropriate maneuver. The driver remains in control of the speed, but the
system takes control of steering, as when parking. The system also detects
the best moment to exit the parking space, and automatically deactivates to
let the driver merge into the traffic.

    After the worldwide success of the first version of Park4U(R),
Valeo has taken into account end users' additional requests, and the new
generation also offers drivers assistance in reversing into a space that is
perpendicular to the road, on a bend or in a narrow street. Last but not
least the parking trajectory has become so flexible that it can adapt to
nearly all individual situations, for even more natural parking.

    To date, 22 models from seven different brands have been
equipped with Valeo's Park4U(R). By the end of 2011, these figures will rise
to 38 models and 12 brands.

Atmel Corporation Completes Sale of SMS Business to INSIDE Contactless S.A.

SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Atmel® Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML), a leader in microcontroller and touch solutions, today announced that it has completed the previously announced sale of Atmel's Smart Card (SMS) business based in Rousset, France and East Kilbride, UK to INSIDE Contactless S.A. ("INSIDE"). 

At closing, INSIDE paid approximately $32 million in cash to Atmel after an adjustment based on the working capital of the transferred business.  Atmel may receive additional cash consideration of up to $21 million if the SMS business under INSIDE's control meets certain financial targets in 2010 and 2011.  As part of the transaction, Atmel has made a minority investment in INSIDE of approximately $4 million and entered into a royalty-based intellectual property license agreement to support current and future SMS products.

As of the closing of the transaction, approximately 160 employees were transferred to INSIDE.  The SMS business had revenues of approximately $27 million for Atmel during the second quarter of 2010.  This transaction follows Atmel's sale of its wafer fabrication operation in Rousset, France, to LFoundry GmbH, which closed during the second quarter of 2010.

Next Generation IP Communications System Built Upon 30 years of Product Evolution

SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- eOn Communications Corporation, (NASDAQ: EONC), a leading provider of innovative telecommunications solutions, announced today the formal launch and general availability of our next generation communications platform the eConn IP-PBX. The eConn IP-PBX is a Voice over IP (VoIP) system that provides organizations with a highly scalable, feature-rich communications system designed to support 10 to 1,000 users. Utilizing commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware and Linux CentOS, the system provides teleworking functionality, conferencing and collaboration, automatic call distribution, wireless capabilities, and more.

The eConn supports over 500 telephony features - a key differentiator between the eConn and other competitive products.  The system's strength and stability comes from an inherent telephony feature set ported from our awarding-winning Millennium® and eQueue® communications platforms.

The eConn can cluster multiple systems and IP devices together over IP or TDM based infrastructures providing greater resiliency than a single server operating autonomously. Additionally, the eConn supports an IP-Q.SIG protocol to provide feature transparency and interoperability as an IP gateway for existing Millennium, eQueue and traditional PBX systems.

Architecture

System architecture is based on Host-based Media Processing (HMP), a new design model in telecommunications that involves the use of software solutions to perform voice processing functions, instead of dedicated Digital Signal Processors (DSP). HMP provides non-blocking communications between industry-standard Ethernet LAN/WAN connections and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) stations and trunks.

Administration

The system's enterprise management suite provides system, network and real time management tools that increase productivity, simplify management tasks and ensure maximum network efficiency. These new tools introduce graphical views of IP and TDM port assignments, devices and user privileges, network monitoring, and real-time notification of system alarms and call management reports.

Unified Communications

The eConn is tightly integrated with eOn's IP Messenger, an all-in-one Unified Communications platform that provides unified messaging, fax messaging, wireless connectivity, CTI call control, one number Find Me functionality, Web access, instant messaging, conferencing, speech recognition, and text-to-speech for e-mail reading. Users will be able to access, manage and respond to any kind of message (voice, fax or e-mail), using any device (phone, PC, web or PDA), from anywhere - at anytime.

SIP Telephones

The eConn supports a wide range of desktop devices, including entry-level IP phones, executive-style IP phones, wireless handsets (WiFi or IP DECT), full-duplex audio conference units, analog telephones, softphones and other devices.  The eConn release introduces the innovative Cortelco 7100 Series IP Telephones, which support the open SIP standard and are fully compatible with the eConn. The 7100 series models are equipped with the TI TITAN chipset and TI Voice Engine, offering high definition voice, a broad range of codecs, security protection and rich features including PoE, PnP Auto-Provisioning, soft keys, XML phonebook and more.
