AT&T Invests Nearly $200 Million in Alabama Networks
BIRMINGHAM, Ala., Sept. 9 -- In just the first six months of this year, AT&T* invested nearly $200 million in wireless and wireline networks to continue improving service for customers in Alabama. Upgrades to the AT&T wireless network included new cell sites, expanded mobile broadband coverage and increased 3G capacity. The investment also included upgrades to the AT&T wireline infrastructure, such as expanded AT&T U-verse® services, additional AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots, and extended reach of broadband services.
AT&T customers are seeing the results of this investment with faster mobile broadband speeds and strong reliability, according to the latest round of comprehensive drive testing by Global Wireless Solutions Inc. (GWS). This GWS testing showed that AT&T maintained the nation's fastest mobile broadband network, connected more than 98 percent of calls on the first attempt, and carried 98.65 percent of calls to completion, a difference of less than one call out of 1,000 from the only higher-scoring provider.
AT&T Alabama President Fred McCallum said AT&T's local investment creates many advantages for the people of Alabama.

Over a three-year period (2007-2009), mobile data traffic on AT&T's wireless network jumped about 5,000 percent.

Matrox Extio Units Control Workstation Noise and Stability at the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service

solutions, today announced that the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service
(INBS) has selected Matrox Extio Series Remote Graphics Units to regulate
noise and stability issues for 25 dual- and quad-monitor worskstations across
8 studios. Extio F1220 and F1400 KVM extension solutions separate the
keyboard, mouse, audio peripherals, and graphics hardware from the host PC
via fibre-optic cable, while supporting up to four monitors at resolutions of
up to 1920 x 1200 per display.
INBS had recently modernised outdated radio equipment in all of their
studios, but the new installation - which included playout servers, recording
machines, and script PCs - required additional workstation and server
support, leading to a noticeable increase in both fan and hard drive noise.
In an effort to eliminate the in-studio buzz, INBS relocated the computer
hardware to designated housing rooms, but the new distance reduced display
quality and caused problems with USB-connected controllers. INBS technicians
solved these problems by installing fanless Matrox Extio F1220 and F1400
units at the operator station, enabling workstation-class performance at a
distance using Extio's PCIe fibre-optic extension technology.
