Energid Technologies Applies Actin Dexterous Control for Black-I Robotics Heavy-lift Arm
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., Aug. 26 -- Black-I Robotics is developing a series of powerful robotic arms for its innovative multi-payload LandShark base. Through a recent collaboration agreement, Energid Technologies will be providing control and simulation for these arms with its Actin software toolkit and grasping algorithms. Black-I's heavy-lift arms, when coupled with Energid's control software, will offer a wide range of manipulation capabilities including explosive ordnance disposal, vehicle inspection, logistics support, and hazardous materials handling, and unexploded ordnance retrieval.

Terma to Head the ASIM Observatory for the International Space Station
LYSTRUP and HERLEV, Denmark, August 26, 2010-- The Danish high-tech company Terma is to head a European space project
with the objective to take measurements and make observations from the
International Space Station (ISS).
The research project ASIM -The Atmosphere Space Interactions Monitor - is
an observatory that in 2014 will be placed at the exterior of the Columbus
module of the European part of the ISS.
ASIM will monitor and take images of the high altitude lightning that is
discharged from thunderclouds towards the conductive ionosphere stretching up
to altitudes of 90-100 km. The formations of lightning are known as "red
sprites", "blue jets", and "elves". The purpose is to study these phenomena
and learn about their impact on the atmosphere, e.g. if they affect the
concentration of water vapour, ozon and nitrogen oxides (NOx gasses)
important to the climate balance.
This is the first time, Terma is main contractor of space equipment on a
program for the European space organization ESA and at the same time it is
the largest Danish commitment in space since the 0rsted satellite.
At the beginning, the project was initiated from Denmark and in fase A
carried through as a study headed by the Danish National Space Center (now
DTU Space). In the next industrial phase B, Terma was responsible for the
specifications and design. The production phase (C) was initiated at the
beginning of August 2010 with expected launch and activation (phase D) in
2014.
Further to participating actively in the development of optical
instruments for the ASIM, Terma is also heading and coordinating the joint
activities from the participating countries and companies and is responsible
for the total program to ESA. Besides Denmark, Italy, Norway, Poland, and
Spain are also participating in the program.
DTU Space has an executive scientific role in the program and is to
supply one of the main instruments, the so-called MXGS Instrument, which is
to measure X-radiation from the lightnings. Furthermore, a number of Danish
companies participate as sub-suppliers.
Denmark has made an exceptional effort to ensure the project by entering
the program ELIPS - European Programme for Life and Physical Sciences - in
2008. In the same year, the political intention to strengthen Danish space
activities was confirmed by an appropriation from the European Globalisation
Adjustment Fund.
As mentioned, ASIM will be placed on the European laboratory module
Columbus. In 2014, Terma will supply the one cubic meter instrument unit to
Japan, where the ASIM will be launched from a Japanese rocket. The
transportation to the ISS and the installation is headed by the American
space organization NASA in cooperation with the Japanese space organization
JAXA.
The contract between ESA and Terma has a total value of 138 MDKK.

25 Percent of New Worms in 2010 Are Designed to Spread Through USB Devices, According to PandaLabs
- 48 percent of SMBs worldwide are infected every year; one third of these infections are caused by worms that spread on USB devices
ORLANDO, Fla., Aug. 26 -- PandaLabs, Panda Security's antimalware laboratory, has discovered that in 2010, 25 percent of new worms have been specifically designed to spread through USB storage devices connected to computers. These types of threats can copy themselves to any device capable of storing information such as cell phones, external hard drives, DVDs, flash memories and MP3/4 players.
The data from Panda Security's Second International SMB Security Barometer suggests that this distribution technique is highly effective. With survey responses from more than 10,470 companies across 20 countries, it was revealed that approximately 48 percent of SMBs (with up to 1,000 computers) admit to having been infected by some type of malware over the last year. As further proof, 27 percent confirmed that the source of the infection was a USB device connected to a computer.
According to Luis Corrons, Technical Director of PandaLabs, "At present, much of the malware in circulation has been designed to distribute through these devices. Not only does it copy itself to these gadgets, but it also runs automatically when a USB device is connected to a computer, infecting the system practically transparently to the user. This has been the case with many infections we have seen this year, such as the distribution of the Mariposa and Vodafone botnets."
So far, these types of infections are still outnumbered by those that spread via email, but it is a growing trend. "There are now so many devices on the market that can be connected via USB to a computer: digital cameras, cell phones, MP3 or MP4 players," adds Corrons. "This is clearly very convenient for users, but since all these devices have memory cards or internal memory, it is feasible that your cell phone could be carrying a virus without your knowledge."
How Does it Work?
There is an increasing amount of malware which, like the dangerous Conficker worm, spreads via removable devices and drives such as memory sticks, MP3 players and digital cameras. The basic technique used is as follows: Windows uses the Autorun.inf file on these drives or devices to know which action to take whenever they are connected to a computer. This file, which is on the root directory of the device, offers the option to automatically run part of the content on the device when it connects to a computer. By modifying Autorun.inf with specific commands, cyber-crooks can enable malware stored on the USB drive to run automatically when the device connects to a computer, thus immediately infecting the computer in question.
To prevent this, Panda Security has developed Panda USB Vaccine, a free product which offers a double layer of preventive protection, disabling the AutoRun feature on computers as well as on USB drives and other devices.

New Cell Site Activated as Part of Ongoing AT&T Investment in Maine Wireless Network
KITTERY, Maine, Aug. 26 -- As part of its continuing network investment to support growing demand for advanced mobile devices and applications, AT&T* today announced the activation of a new 3G cell site in York County that will enhance coverage for area residents and businesses in Kittery, specifically on Bartlett Road and along Route 103. The new cell sites are part of AT&T's ongoing effort to extend its mobile broadband wireless network - the fastest in the nation, according to expert, independent testing. In 2010, AT&T plans to add more than 20 new cell sites and upgrade nearly 100 additional cell sites to 3G throughout the state of Maine.
