Sigourney Weaver Narrates New Google Earth Animation on Brazil's Controversial Belo Monte Dam for Amazon Watch and International Rivers

If built, the Belo Monte Dam would be the third-largest hydroelectric dam in the world. The dam would divert the flow of the Xingu River, an important tributary of the Amazon River, in order to produce electricity for industrial mining operations in the region. The dam's reservoirs would flood 668 square kilometers and displace more than 20,000 people. Late last week, the Brazilian government signed the concession to build the $17 billion-dollar project, ignoring local, national, and international opposition, proven financial and technical risks, and the ready availability of clean energy alternatives.
The tour and video, called "Defending the Rivers of the Amazon," illustrates the impacts that diverting the river along a 100-km stretch will have on the two indigenous tribes who have lived there for generations. It also animates the flooding associated with the dam, impacts on the region's spectacular biodiversity, and maps over 60 dams planned for the Brazilian Amazon over the next two decades.
The original concept for the Google Earth interactive tour and video emerged when Avatar director James Cameron and Sigourney Weaver traveled to the Xingu River in April, accompanied by Amazon Watch and the Brazilian environmental organization Instituto Socioambiental (ISA). After speaking with some of the indigenous tribes and riverbank families who would be directly affected, Weaver commented that the Belo Monte Dam would be "a disaster for the Xingu River, for the rainforest, and certainly for all the indigenous people and families living along the river. Their way of life will disappear."

OmniVision's ISP features high-end image processing functions such as advanced automatic white balance and color noise reduction in the YUV domain while maintaining high frequency details and delivering clear, sharp still image and video capture. NEW YORK, Aug. 30 -- Verizon's High Speed Internet entered a new realm on Monday (Aug. 30) with the introduction of a 10 to 15 megabits-per-second (Mbps) downstream and 1 Mbps upstream* service initially available to more than 4 million households and small businesses.
"Consumers and small businesses everywhere have a need for speed," said Shawn Strickland, Verizon's vice president of consumer strategy. "With our new 10 to 15 Mbps speed tier, downloading files, photos and other content will be faster, plus our High Speed Internet customers will have peace of mind because our service is backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee policy."
The new 10 to 15 Mbps speed tier is the latest addition to Verizon's existing suite of High Speed Internet speeds - 4 to 7 Mbps, 1.5 to 3 Mbps' and 768 kilobits per second to 1 Mbps downstream for consumers, as well as similar business packages. All HSI services include a dedicated connection to the home or business over the company's copper network, so service won't slow down when neighbors are online at the same time.
"This new, faster Verizon High Speed Internet service has the potential to attract business and residential customers who value the affordability, reliability, and everyday performance of their broadband connection," said Amy Lind, consumer broadband research manager for the global technology market intelligence firm IDC.
"One of the issues with cable Internet is that its bandwidth capacity is shared by multiple users at a node, so the speed a customer actually receives can vary considerably depending on how many cable customers are online simultaneously," said Lind. "DSL-based High Speed Internet, on the other hand, offers each end user a dedicated connection, so its performance is more consistent all the time."
Pricing for the 10 to 15 Mbps/1 Mbps service is $49.99 per month for residential customers with voice service from Verizon, and $59.99 per month for those without voice service. Small-business pricing for the new, higher speed tier begins at $89.99 per month as a stand alone service with a two-year agreement, and $99.99 per month with no term contract. Low dropout regulators for powering precision analog improve efficiency and accuracy in noise-sensitive applications
DALLAS, Aug. 30 -- Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) today introduced the industry's first -36-V low dropout regulators (LDO). The TPS7A30, paired with the positive voltage TPS7A49, provides designers with a total solution for powering precision analog applications. The devices feature ultra-high power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) performance and as low as 16uVrms of output noise. The TPS7A30 generates 200 mA, while the TPS7A49 manages 150 mA. Wolfhound 'Sniffs Out' Ten Contraband Cell Phones in Less Than Thirty Minutes in Thailand High Security Prison
METUCHEN, N.J. and NONTHABURI PROVINCE, Thailand, Aug. 29 -- Berkeley Varitronics Systems, Inc. (BVS) today announced the latest results of a test of its Wolfhound cell phone detector at the maximum security Bangkwang Prison located near Bangkok, Thailand.
BVS India Region Sales Manager, Sandeep Natekar and their Associate Reseller for Thailand, Infoleader Co. Ltd along with Bangkwang correctional officials, used the Wolfhound to locate ten contraband cell phones in just under thirty minutes. And this was after passing through 7 layers of perimeter security. The Wolfhound was able to pick up the cell phones' RF energy even through thick concrete walls. Convicts on death row possessed some of the illegal phones.
Thai Department of Corrections under The Ministry of Defense officials were so impressed that Mr. Visanu Prachongkit, Bangkwang Prison Commander, sent a Letter of Appreciation to BVS and Infoleader stating, "Thank you for providing us such a great device and fantastic support for the cell phone detection test. This device can really help us to improve on the entire related cell phone checking process. We hope that we can work closely with you in the near future."
Safeguarding this maximum-security prison is considered especially critical to correction officials due to the nature of the population ranging from convicted murders and major narcotics dealers to high-level members of the 'red shirt' protesters.
Other expensive solutions require an entire network infrastructure of wireless sensors hard-wired throughout a facility that can be difficult to deploy. Whereas, the Wolfhound is an affordable alternative, highly portable, requires little training, and does not use jamming that can interfere with lawful cell traffic.

Jornal do Brasil Reinforces Interaction and Social Content
Project marked by E-paper and user participation. Access to reserved content will cost R$9.90 per month
RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 27 -- The new digital content phase of Jornal do Brazil, jb.com.br, available starting September 1, 2010, will be divided into three areas of concentration:
(I) Real Time: provided and produced by the newspaper's own sources and the best Brazilian and international news agencies.
- Real Time will also include "teasers," small notes or, in the case of more extensive material, paragraphs that whet readers' appetites for more reserved JB digital content.
- Real Time will include expanded content with photos, video and sound.
(II) JB Digital: the traditional Jornal do Brasil that aggregates the important content differentiators that have always characterized the newspaper.
- Initially, JB will be a daily product designed for reader-friendly software platforms on computers and mobile devices of any type (laptops, desktops, iPhones, BlackBerries, or the newer digital readers such as iPad, Kindle, and Mix).
- Once on jb.com.br, the user just clicks on the JB Digital icon so the newspaper's electronic pages immediately adjust to the computer screen's format; using the mouse or interactive screen, the font and images can be enlarged or reduced. This product will be available at a monthly subscription rate of R$9.90, 20% of the subscription cost for the old print version of the newspaper.
- There will be icons for other Brazilian media in the new phase of Jornal do Brasil, as well as the quality content of The New York Times and other leading international news organizations.
- No changes will be made to the editorial line of independence and quality that for 119 years has come to distinguish Jornal do Brasil.
(III) Blogosphere (Sociedade Aberta): There will be interactive blogs with leading Jornal do Brasil columnists and writers, as well as with other contributors through the publisher "Sociedade Aberta," where the reader is reporter and writer.
- Blogosphere will include the innovative JBWiki, the newspaper with content 100% provided and produced by readers.
Jornal do Brasil soon will also offer a digital version in other languages based on the idea of being the first newspaper in Brazil created by Brazilians and produced in the world's most spoken languages.
Toward the end of the year, JB will pursue promotional partnerships that allow subscribers to acquire their first digital readers at a reduced cost.

4G LTE services
Verizon Wireless will launch its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless network in the fourth quarter of 2010. The company's aggressive network build includes plans to launch in 25 to 30 markets, covering approximately 100 million people.
