LAUREL, Md., Aug. 20 -- In a continuing effort to provide the best wireless service for local residents in Henry County, Verizon Wireless has expanded its network with ten new cell sites. The new cells provide increased wireless voice and 3G data coverage in Ridgeway, Martinsville, Axton and along such heavily traveled roadways as Route 87 and 58.

The increased coverage is part of the company's aggressive multi-billion dollar network investment each year to stay ahead of the growing demand for Verizon Wireless' voice and data services.  Last year alone, the company spent $274 million on regional network improvements, bringing total network investment in the region since 2000 to more than $2.3 billion.

"Even the most sophisticated wireless device is only as good as the network it runs on," said Mike Maiorana.  "Verizon Wireless continues to invest in our network and add capacity to stay ahead of growing demand and ensure our customers have an even better wireless experience tomorrow than they had today."

Verizon Wireless has the nation's largest and most reliable 3G broadband network with five times the coverage of other networks which makes advanced services like turn-by-turn navigation, over-the-air downloads of the latest applications, text/picture messaging, video and music downloads, web browsing and 3D gaming possible.  Customer demand for these advanced services continues to grow.

The company's "nation's most reliable wireless network" reputation is based on network studies performed by real-life test men and test women throughout the country. Locally, test men and women traveled more than 18,747 miles of area roadways to test the Verizon Wireless network and the networks of competitors in the first half of 2010. Using sophisticated testing equipment, Verizon Wireless' local team of network technicians conducted 66,552 voice call attempts and 373,899 data tests on the Verizon Wireless network and the networks of major competitors.  Unmarked test vehicles are equipped with computers that automatically conduct voice calls and data tests.

Results from this internal network quality assurance test program confirm that Verizon Wireless is the 3G network quality leader in the Virginia, Maryland and DC region, and correlate with other third-party network quality findings, including the J.D. Power and Associates 2010 Wireless Call Quality Performance Study(SM), Vol.1.

In addition to enhancing its 3G network, Verizon Wireless has also begun testing its 4G network which it plans to deploy in 2010 in 25 to 30 U.S. markets, covering 100 million people.  Verizon Wireless' 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless network will offer dramatically higher wireless speeds and reliability than even today's most advanced 3G network.

Local Wireless Network Upgrade Extends Access to Advanced Products, Services and Applications

BRUNSWICK, Ga., Aug. 20 -- AT&T* today announced the availability of its third generation (3G) mobile broadband network in Coastal Georgia, opening the door to a new era of mobile services, devices and feature-rich audio and video content for customers in Jekyll Island, Sea Island, Brunswick and St. Simons Island.

AT&T is an industry leader in delivering the benefits of mobile broadband networks, devices and applications. With the nation's fastest 3G network, AT&T provides accelerated mobile data speeds and simultaneous voice and data capabilities for an amazing wireless voice and data experience.

"Investing in and expanding the wireless network across the state is a priority in 2010, particularly throughout coastal Georgia," said Kaylyn Padgett, External Affairs Manager-AT&T Georgia. "We continue to make significant investments to deliver dependable wireless access in more places across Georgia."

Earlier this year, AT&T unveiled its Georgia wireless network investment plans for 2010, which include the addition of nearly 60 new cell sites and the upgrade of more than 250 additional cell sites to 3G throughout the state.

"Demand for wireless bandwidth is growing, whether it's for sharing video and photos with friends, watching a movie, checking the latest scores, or listening to music on a phone, netbook or other mobile devices on the go," said Keith Holmes, Vice President and General Manager, AT&T Georgia. "With this expansion, our customers can enjoy the nation's best, most advanced mobile broadband experience with emerging devices and tens of thousands of mobile applications."

Wireless data traffic on the AT&T network has grown more than 5,000 percent over the past three years, largely attributed to the increasing popularity of advanced smartphones and the performance of AT&T's 3G network, the nation's fastest.  From 2007 through 2009, AT&T's total capital investment in its Georgia wireless and wireline networks was more than $4.1 billion. From 2007 through 2009, AT&T's wireless network investment in Georgia was nearly $1.1 billion.

AT&T recently completed a software upgrade at 3G cell sites nationwide that prepares the nation's fastest 3G network for even faster speeds. The deployment of High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) 7.2 technology is the first of multiple initiatives in AT&T's network enhancement strategy designed to provide customers with an enhanced mobile broadband experience, both today and well into the future.  Faster 3G speeds are scheduled to become available this year and in 2011 on a market-by-market basis as AT&T combines the new technology with the increased deployment of high-speed backhaul connections to cell sites, primarily with fiber-optic technology.

The new 37" XVT373SV and 32" XVT323SV 120 Hz Edge Lit Razor LED LCD models bring the major improvement of local dimming for the first time to these screen sizes, improving contrast ratios to 1,000,000:1, an enormous increase over the 50,000:1 contrast ratio seen in the previous generation products. Another new addition to these screen sizes is VIZIO's complete VIA platform, with integral Dual Band 802.11n Wi-Fi and VIZIO's unique Bluetooth remote control with QWERTY keyboard. Like the larger sets, a stylish redesign makes these models even more attractive, with slimmed cabinets that are less than two inches deep.

AUO and Wistron to Establish a Joint Venture for TFT-LCD Module Plant

HSINCHU, Taiwan, Aug. 20 -- AU Optronics Corp. ("AUO" or the "Company") (TAIEX: 2409; NYSE: AUO) today held a meeting of the Board of Directors on Aug. 20, 2010, at which the Board approved a resolution establishing a joint venture of TFT-LCD TV panel module production with Wistron Corporation at "Wistron Optical Campus" of the Zhongshan Torch Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone in Guangdong, China. The new business model of allying with one of the world's leading ODM manufacturers will hopefully help not only broaden our customer base, but also provide in-time and value-added services for customers by joining the strengths from both sides. Total solutions for design integration are included to bring about long-term benefits for AUO and Wistron, seizing global business opportunities together.

The Board of Directors of AUO and Wistron approved establishing the joint venture with a registered capital of no more than US$ 10 million. AUO and Wistron will own 51% and 49% of the shareholding of the joint venture respectively. The joint venture will tentatively be named Zhongshan BriVision Optronics Corporation.

If the investment plan is approved by the relevant authority, AUO's presence of module plants in the China market will be more complete. With services covering East China, South China, North China and Southwest China, AUO will be able to more closely respond to customer requirements and strengthen its quality of services.

Motally Inc., a privately-held US-based company. Motally's mobile analytics
service offers in-application tracking and reporting, and is designed to

service offering is planned to be adapted for Qt, Symbian, Meego and Java
developers, and Nokia plans to continue serving Motally's existing customer

The PS3 has been hacked, but probably not the way you might have expected.

So, after »that whole Linux fiasco happened (which is currently tied up in courts, just so you know), Sony probably thought that they were safe from any major threats to their system. Then this happened.

What it basically does is work the same way that Pre-2009 PSPs did with Pandora Batteries, in that inserting the proprietary drive into the USB port kicks the system into service mode so you can fiddle with it. Basically, this exploit exists for the same reason as it did on the PSP, because that is the method that Sony themselves use in order to fix PS3 consoles that ended up with screwed up firmware installs and other low level issues. This supposedly allows everything from dumping your PS3 games to the hard drive (internal or external) to downgrading the system firmware. And because the dongle interacts with the hardware on a machine code level using Sony's own software, there is nothing Sony could do to prevent its use until they change the hardware itself to no longer allow the system to boot in that way (which is what they ultimately had to do with the PSP with the 3000).



One thing that must be kept in mind is that, regardless of where you usually come down on the "open platform versus closed platform and consumers rights therein" argument, this is completely, totally crazy illegal. Not because of any whining Sony will do about their hardware being hacked, but because the way this thing was developed was apparently by the guys that made it getting their hands of one of the dongle's that Sony's guys use themselves, copying the hardware and dumping the software, then copying both to their own drive design. Because of that, when this explodes like it obviously will, Sony will probably be able to successfully block the sale of them in America/Britain/etc. Not that that really matters, I suppose.

"Beta testing" since October of last year, Cellit Climate leverages a proprietary, rules-based engine to deliver select National Weather Service alerts to the mobile phone. Next Generation Public Safety Network will provide interoperability to Bay Area Agencies

SCHAUMBURG, Ill., Aug. 19 -- The Motorola Solutions business of Motorola (NYSE:MOT) and the Public Safety Agencies within the greater San Francisco Bay Area received $50.6 million in grant funding today from the Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). The NTIA grant will be funding the Bay Area Wireless Enhanced Broadband (BayWEB) program through the Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP), which provides grants to support the deployment of broadband infrastructure to connect "community anchor institutions" such as schools, libraries, hospitals, and public safety facilities.  The standards based Public Safety subsystem will utilize Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology operating on 700 MHz frequencies to provide mobile broadband service to public safety first responders.

"The BayWEB project will directly address the many challenges that public safety faces in the Bay Area by providing first responders with a hardened public safety network that will be available in emergencies, natural disasters and catastrophic events, while also providing community anchor institutions, business and residential end users with affordable Internet access services."

The program involves a multi-jurisdiction and multi-disciplinary approach to interoperability, and includes communications capabilities for first responders and public safety professionals, as well as all other government services including public works, transportation agencies, and critical infrastructure organizations. BayWEB is a component of the Bay Area Regional Interoperable Communications System (BayRICS). BayRICS also consists of a P25 voice system, microwave system, and information sharing applications.

"When a major earthquake or disaster strikes next in the Bay Area, a regional, secure and dedicated communications network for our first responders will literally save lives, prevent further damage and protect public health and safety," said San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. "I am proud that, working together with cities and our public safety and law enforcement agencies throughout the region, the Bay Area will now be one of the nation's first regions to deploy this innovative emergency broadband communications network."

The BTOP application was submitted on behalf of a public-private partnership between Motorola and the San Francisco Bay Area Public Safety Agencies as represented by the Alameda County Sheriff as executive sponsor of the BayRICS Policy Group and Regional Mutual Aid Coordinator for Region 2, the Northern California Coastal Region, which includes the entire Bay Area and the Northern California Regional Intelligence Center (Fusion Center).

"The implementation of this technology for first responders is another critical step in achieving true public safety interoperability. The BTOP funding announced today will leverage Project Cornerstone, an LTE demonstration project using an experimental FCC license, to include the larger Bay Area utilizing almost 200 pre-existing sites.  This demonstration is the first of its kind for Public Safety within the nation utilizing the 700MHz spectrum.  Additionally, this funding will provide a public access network to serve schools, hospitals, libraries and community colleges throughout the greater San Francisco Bay Area Region. This award will create an estimated 1,315 jobs for the Bay Area.

New Online Programming From Turner Broadcasting for FiOS Subscribers Includes Adult Swim, Cartoon Network and TruTV

NEW YORK, Aug. 19 -- Verizon's FiOS TV customers are now getting more online video content from Time Warner Inc.  Once again, the two companies are joining forces to give consumers more programming from the TV channels they love - wherever and whenever they want it.

Following the online launch in June of two other Time Warner channels, Turner's TNT and TBS, three more channels are joining Verizon's growing FiOS TV Online service: Adult Swim, Cartoon Network and truTV.  Like TNT and TBS, these new channels will feature a selection of programming available on FiOS TV Online within 24 hours after an episode airs on live television.

More schools now prepared to issue multimodal alerts from a single interface

Supra Enables Real Estate Agents to Obtain Listing Keys Using Their iPhone

iPhone immediately reports when a house is shown, benefiting listing agents and home sellers

SALEM, Ore., Aug. 19 -- Supra announced today that it has begun shipping its eKEY(TM) solution for the iPhone, enabling real estate agents to obtain house keys for listings with their iPhones. The eKEY software turns an iPhone into a sophisticated, easy-to-use tool that real estate agents can use to show homes to prospective home buyers. Supra, a leading provider of electronic key box systems is a subsidiary of UTC Fire & Security, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).

When agents list properties, they typically secure a set of house keys in locked containers, called key boxes, usually hung on the front door of a house. Only qualified agents, who have been approved by the local real estate association or Multiple Listing Service (MLS), may open the key box and obtain the house keys using an electronic key from Supra.

The eKEY solution for the iPhone consists of a hardware adapter and easy-to-navigate software. The compact adapter attaches to the base of an iPhone. Lightweight (less than 1/2 an ounce) and smaller than a typical car fob, it can be carried on an agent's keychain when not in use. After an agent enters a secret personal identification number (PIN) into the eKEY software, an infrared beam at the base of the adapter communicates with a key box, commanding it to unlock.

The eKEY software then immediately transmits a record of the event via a cellular network. Listing agents who represent the home seller use this information to market the property. They can contact the showing agents for feedback on property attractiveness and pricing and can also easily send emails to all agents who have shown the property to notify them of price changes or offers on the property.
