NetEx and Veeam Software Partner to Provide Free WAN Optimization Software for New Veeam Backup & Replication Customers
MINNEAPOLIS and COLUMBUS, Ohio, Aug. 24 -- NetEx®, the leader in WAN optimization software, and Veeam Software, innovative provider of data protection, disaster recovery and systems management solutions for VMware virtual datacenter environments, announced today they will partner to supply free HyperIP® software to customers who license Veeam Backup & Replication for VMware.
This exclusive agreement entitles Veeam users to a free one-year subscription to the 2Mb/s HyperIP (VM edition), a virtual appliance that improves the performance of moving large amounts of data across a WAN. Solution provider partners will be given the opportunity to deploy HyperIP with Veeam Backup & Replication beginning immediately. New customers who license Veeam Backup & Replication after July 1, 2010 are eligible for two complimentary 2Mb/s one-year subscriptions of HyperIP. The program will be available through July 2011.
The partnership addresses the challenges of varying network configurations and conditions that can be common in virtualization and cloud computing environments, including packet loss, latency, and jitter.
"NetEx and Veeam have a common goal of ensuring performance and reliability of VMware data protection and disaster recovery," said Ratmir Timashev, Veeam President and CEO. "We know that no matter how good the backup and replication software, network conditions can sometimes result in less-than-ideal results for customers, so we are happy that NetEx will provide its software-based WAN optimization solution to our customers in this exclusive free offer."
"Time and time again, we have proven how HyperIP extends the functionality of VMware, and Veeam's backup and replication product provides an excellent platform for demonstrating this to a new market," said Robert MacIntyre, Vice President, Business Development and Marketing at NetEx. "When data, or virtual systems, must be transferred between locations as in a DR test scenario, users will find that HyperIP delivers a significant performance boost."
NetEx and Veeam will collaborate in the development of joint support materials and technical resources, such as end user documentation and training.
Veeam Backup & Replication is the first enterprise-ready solution that combines backup and replication in a single product for fast recovery in VMware ESX and ESXi environments, delivering near continuous data protection (CDP) at a cost that is 80 percent lower than traditional CDP. Veeam Backup & Replication combines the power of virtualization and the innovation of Veeam to provide Virtualized-Powered Data Protection, or vPower. Veeam's patent-pending technology enables instant VM recovery, universal application-item recovery and automated recovery verification.
NetEx's award-winning HyperIP is a software-only, virtualization-ready WAN optimization solution, ideal for moving large data sets across WANs securely, swiftly and seamlessly. Patent-pending technology accelerates and optimizes industry-leading data replication and file transfer applications by aggregating multiple data replication applications over a shared connection while mitigating the inherent network latency and network disruption for long-distance remote TCP data transmissions. The full version of HyperIP supports long-distance data transfers at up to 800 Mb/s, the highest performance of any WAN optimization solution on the market, and 25 to more than 100 percent faster than competitive products. Transfer speed is optimized for the full range of data management applications, including backup & remote replication and business continuance/disaster recovery (BC/DR). NetEx offers HyperIP for cloud infrastructures as a software-only configuration, enabling customers to quickly deploy the acceleration software into their existing VMware infrastructures.

Novell Announces General Availability of Novell Cloud Security Service
Novell Cloud Security Service provides provisioning, access, security and compliance solutions for computing in the cloud
WALTHAM, Mass., Aug. 24 -- Novell today announced the general availability of Novell Cloud Security Service. Part of Novell's WorkloadIQ(TM) vision, Novell Cloud Security Service® gives cloud providers the ability to deliver secure access and compliance in the cloud for their customers. Novell Cloud Security Service is a critical part of Novell's broader identity and security portfolio, which enables enterprises to have a consistent framework for managing identities across physical, virtual and cloud deployments. Novell is the only vendor to offer this integrated capability, which helps organizations manage complex security and compliance requirements through a cost-effective and easy-to-use suite of products.
With Novell Cloud Security Service, enterprises can quickly and easily extend their identity infrastructure to any public cloud. Any changes that are made to their users or permissions are immediately replicated in the cloud environment, thus ensuring one consistent identity and security framework for the enterprise, regardless of where the computing is actually taking place.
"Security is the biggest hindrance to cloud adoption that service providers offering cloud services need to overcome," said Antonio Piraino, Vice President of Research, Tier 1 Research. "The ability to provide interoperable security solutions for and between an enterprise's internal infrastructure and the cloud provider's platform will alleviate the biggest assurance, vulnerability and SLA concerns enterprises have today."
As cloud computing vendors that offer software-, platform-, or infrastructure-as-a-service seek to differentiate themselves in the marketplace, value-added services like customized security become increasingly important. Novell Cloud Security Service helps cloud service providers deliver trusted security assurance and compliance to their enterprise customers. It is the first, and only multi-tenant identity and access management solution that provides just-in-time provisioning, authentication, authorization and support for compliance.
The Novell Cloud Security Service currently has several beta deployments globally. With today's announcement of general availability, Novell's cloud services team will target more than 200 IaaS, and 1,300 SaaS and PaaS vendors to get them started with this ground-breaking technology that is supported by more than 60 patents.
"Novell's ability to deliver a complete set of provisioning, access, security and compliance solutions that help both organizations and cloud providers control access, monitor activity and provide compliance is yet another example of their leadership in this area," said Jim Reavis, co-founder and executive director of the Cloud Security Alliance. "The Cloud Security Alliance is working closely with Novell to address many of the trust concerns end-user organizations have with cloud computing, including issues that go beyond just technology solutions."
Novell Cloud Security Service is hosted in the cloud, either where the provider hosts its application or via a Novell hosting partner. A user can log on directly or via the enterprise identity system. The service first verifies the identity and, if successful, will generate an identity token in the format needed by the SaaS provider. The user is now authenticated to the SaaS service. Once inside the application, the application connectors that are provided with the service capture deep page-level user activity and provide the audit stream for compliance purposes.
NCSS expands Novell's identity product portfolio in WorkloadIQ
WorkloadIQ is Novell's vision to deliver products for the rapidly growing intelligent workload management market, which IDC estimates is more than $4.2B. A key part of this vision is to deliver a spectrum of cloud-ready Identity and Security solutions to meet today's enterprise need for security in physical, virtual and cloud environments.
As cloud models mature and businesses look at cloud solutions, security questions such as protecting data in the cloud, providing audit reports for inspection and ensuring regulatory compliance are becoming increasingly important. For enterprises looking at moving critical workloads to the cloud, the combination of Novell Identity Manager 4® and Novell Access Manager® is the only solution that offers seamless provisioning and access in real-time.
"Despite the speed with which organizations are deploying virtualized systems and moving to SaaS, reporting on access to cloud-based resources is a continuing challenge. Novell Identity Manager provides an intelligent, identity-driven framework to ensure consistent management of identities, both in our organization and in the cloud," said Mark Edson, infrastructure manager, Huntington National Bank. "With Novell Access Manager, we've built a flexible solution to establish a secure, federated connection with our cloud providers so our passwords are never shared with an external party."
For cloud service providers who want to deliver a secure, compliant computing environment for their customers, the Novell Cloud Security Service offers a multi-tenant environment with built-in metering, billing and auditing.
"There is a tremendous market opportunity to help our customers with their cloud strategy, including deploying and managing cloud applications in a secure and compliant manner," said Kevin Nikkhoo, founder and president of CloudsID.com. "Novell Cloud Security Service offers secure access management from the cloud and works with our customers' existing identity infrastructure to enable us to offer our customers best-in-class solutions."
Many Novell customers today are seeking to move applications to the cloud in order to reduce costs and increase agility.
"Today's enterprises are embracing cloud services while continuing their investment in their physical and virtual data centers. To support these efforts, Novell offers the most complete and interoperable set of provisioning, access, security and compliance products for IT organizations and cloud providers. Novell Cloud Security Service complements Novell's comprehensive suite of Identity and Security solutions," said Jim Ebzery, senior vice president and general manager, Security, Management and Operating Platforms, Novell. "Our goal is to give our customers the ability to take advantage of the economic benefits of cloud computing while also mitigating risk and maintaining compliance."
Novell, Inc. (NASDAQ:NOVL), a leader in intelligent workload management, helps organizations through WorkloadIQ securely deliver and manage computing services across physical, virtual and cloud computing environments. We help customers reduce the cost, complexity, and risk associated with their IT systems through our solutions for identity and security, systems management, collaboration and Linux based operating platforms. With our infrastructure software and ecosystem of partnerships, Novell integrates mixed IT environments, allowing people and technology to work as one. Comcast Adds Remote DVR Scheduling, Launches AnyRoom DVR and Upgrades On-Screen Program Guide in Massachusetts and New Hampshire
New Enhancements Make It Easier, Faster and More Convenient For Customers to Schedule, Record, Manage and Watch Favorite Programs
BOSTON, Aug. 24 -- With the fall TV season heating up in just a few weeks, Comcast today announced the launch of new features to its Digital Video Recorder (DVR) service that will bring more choice and convenience to its XFINITY TV customers throughout most of Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire.
These new innovations, which include AnyRoom DVR and an upgraded on-screen program guide that enables customers to remotely program their DVR while online, coincide with the release of Comcast's second annual "TV Pulse Survey," an independent nationwide survey conducted by International Communications Research, revealing that more consumers than ever before plan to watch their favorite TV shows anytime, anywhere, using time-shifting technologies such as Digital Video Recorders, video-on-demand and the Internet. The survey found that 70 percent of Boston consumers use these time-shifting technologies to watch primetime TV series and discovered that more than half of the consumers that use these technologies rely on them more than they did one year ago.
"We know that Boston area consumers depend on time-shifting technologies to watch their favorite TV shows on their schedules," said Steve Hackley, Senior Vice President of Comcast's Greater Boston Region. "These new enhancements, like AnyRoom DVR, remote DVR scheduling and the enhanced on-screen guide, are just the latest innovations to our XFINITY platform designed to deliver customers expanded access to their favorite entertainment on their terms and the most choice and control available today."
AnyRoom DVR Service
AnyRoom DVR service gives customers the freedom to watch their recorded TV shows from any room in their house, anytime they want. This AnyRoom DVR option, which requires new equipment, enables customers to control all their recordings from one primary DVR that can store approximately 50 hours of high definition programming and 240 hours of standard definition content. With its 500 GB hard drive, the primary DVR outlet gives customers access to all their DVR features, including the ability to schedule and delete recordings, change settings and pause live TV. The AnyRoom DVR service is available with up to three additional HD-capable set-top boxes that can access the primary outlet through the network to enable customers to view and sort recorded programs, as well as fast-forward, rewind and pause their selections from any room in the house. Customers can even begin watching a recorded program in one room and finish watching it in another. Recordings can only be scheduled or deleted from the primary DVR outlet.
With AnyRoom DVR service, both the primary DVR and the networked boxes are HD-capable and function as a regular digital set-top box, including offering access to the interactive program guide, more than 17,000 On Demand movies and programs a month, parental controls and more.
New On-Screen Program Guide Features
Watch in HD Button
-- The new Watch in HD button feature allows customers to quickly switch
to the HD version of the program they are watching and eliminates
searching for the HD version of the channel.
-- The Watch in HD Button cuts scroll times and allows customers to jump
from the SD channel to the corresponding HD channel faster.
On Demand Skip Ahead/Skip Back
-- On Demand Skip Ahead and Skip Back enables customers to skip ahead or
skip back in five minutes increments while watching On Demand
programming by using the Page Up (skip ahead) and Page Down (skip
back) arrows on the remote control.
myDVR Manager
-- myDVR Manager allows customers with a Comcast DVR and high-speed
Internet service to remotely schedule and adjust their recordings
online using Comcast TV Listings. Comcast customers can log on to http://www.comcast.net/tv to add programs to their recording list and manage
their scheduled DVR recordings as well as change the priority of
recorded series. In addition, customers with an iPhone or iPod Touch
can remotely schedule their DVR recordings using the Comcast Mobile
App.
DVR Search & Record
-- DVR Search & Record enables customers to search for a program by
actor, title, director and keyword. For example, if a customer
searches for "Clint Eastwood" all programs Clint Eastwood acted in or
directed that are in the TV Listings would appear. If the customer
saves the Clint Eastwood search, the DVR would automatically search
for new matches and schedule recordings anytime a Clint Eastwood
program aired on any channel.
DVR Skip Ahead/Skip Back
-- DVR Skip Ahead/Skip Back allows customers to skip ahead or skip back
in five minute increments by pressing Page Up and Page Down arrows on
the remote.
DVR History, Cleanup and Folders
-- DVR History displays information on already recorded, watched and
deleted programs.
-- DVR Clean Up allows customers to manage their DVR by deleting in bulk
programs they no longer want to save.
-- DVR Folders - When customers record more than one episode of a series,
DVR Folders will automatically create a folder where programs are
stored.
Comcast's new AnyRoom DVR service and interactive guide enhancements are part of the company's commitment to deliver more choice and control to its customers through its XFINITY services, which include more than 100 HD channels, 3,000 HD choices, 50 to 70 foreign-language channels, On Demand video choices increasing to 25,000 and increased broadband speeds of up of 50 Mbps now and even faster in the future. XFINITY also offers thousands of online entertainment choices through XFINITY TV (http://www.fancast.com) as well as applications that enable customers to program a DVR from the Internet or a mobile device, and cross-platform features like Caller ID to the TV and PC.
For customers who are interested in more information about AnyRoom DVR service or other XFINITY products, please visit http://www.xfinity.com or call 1-800-XFINITY. For more information on the new interactive program guide, customers can visit http://www.comcast.net/newguide.

The new PICSIO pocket cameras, the GC-WP10 and GC-FM2, both feature Full HD video, excellent low-light performance, a three-inch touch screen for easy operation and playback viewing, and compatibility with Eye-Fi cards for Wi-Fi connectivity. What's more, the touch screen functions are easily operated even when wearing gloves for all-season fun. The large screen also enhances playback, with a large, clear image that makes it easy for all to enjoy what was recorded.

Visa Provides Guidance on Secure Implementation and Management of Payment Applications
Collaborative effort with the SANS Institute to help improve merchant security
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 24 -- Visa Inc. (NYSE:V) today announced global industry best practices for payment application vendors, integrators and resellers that implement, install or manage payment-related systems on behalf of merchants. The best practices developed by Visa in collaboration with the SANS Institute are designed to complement the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Payment Application Data Security Standard (PA-DSS).
The PA-DSS is a global set of security requirements for software vendors who develop payment applications for merchants who seek business software to manage payment processes. PA-DSS compliant applications do not store prohibited data such as track data, sensitive authentication data, or PIN data, helping guard merchants and agents against compromises and support overall compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS).
"The PA-DSS provides guidance for developing secure software, while Visa's Best Practices for Payment Application Companies represents a natural companion, providing guidance on how to securely install that piece of software," said Eduardo Perez, Head of Global Payment System Security, Visa Inc. "We saw from data compromise investigations that while an application may be secure and comply with the PA-DSS, implementation and management missteps can create vulnerabilities."
In developing the best practices, Visa collaborated with the SANS Institute, a trusted leader in IT security training for the U.S. government, military and private organizations. "Visa's willingness to share this information with the community is a huge step forward," said Alan Paller, Director of Research, the SANS Institute. "Organizations that fail to implement these practices are needlessly exposing themselves to the inherent risks found in cyberspace."
The SANS Institute is also partnering with Visa to provide further guidance to payment application vendors, integrators and resellers on how to securely implement point-of-sale solutions through a series of training courses. More information is available at http://www.sans.org/visatop10.
Today, a growing number of merchants are using applications that comply with the PA-DSS. Criminals are responding by changing their attack methods and are using tools like memory parsers and key loggers to siphon card data while payments are being processed on merchants' or agents' systems. The best practices help meet the challenges of such an evolving security environment.
Investigations of merchant card compromises have found that in many cases, payment application companies inadvertently left their systems and software improperly configured, putting their customers at high risk for data compromise. It was found that many compromised merchants operated with those deficiencies for months or even years at a time.
"Visa is one of the few organizations that actually understands how financial cyber crimes are carried out, because of their extensive investigations and analysis of attacks involving payment card data. The depth of that experience enables them to provide valuable guidance," said Paller.
Visa's Top Ten Best Practices for Payment Application Companies is summarized as follows, with more detailed guidance available at http://www.visa.com/cisp.
1. Perform background checks on new employees and contractors prior to
hire
2. Maintain an internal and external software security training and
certification curriculum
3. Adhere to a common software development life cycle across payment
applications
4. Ensure that newly released payment application versions are Payment
Application Data Security Standard (PA-DSS) compliant
5. Conduct application vulnerability detection tests and code reviews
against common vulnerabilities and weaknesses prior to sale or
distribution
6. Actively identify payment application versions that store sensitive
authentication data and/or retain critical security vulnerabilities,
and notify all affected customers
7. Maintain customer service level agreements stating that only PA-DSS
compliant payment application versions will be sold and supported
8. Implement an installer, integrator and reseller training and
certification program that enforces adequate data security processes
when supporting customers
9. Adhere to industry guidelines for data field encryption and
tokenization across payment applications that use these technologies
10. Support capability of dynamic data solutions across payment
applications
"Visa's best practices can help mitigate security issues that may lead to data compromises, but it's vitally important to maintain ongoing compliance with the PCI DSS, which remains the best protection against a data compromise," Perez concluded.
The release of Visa's Best Practices for Payment Application Companies represents the latest of series of Visa initiatives to secure payment applications as a means of better protecting card data. Visa developed the original payment application security standards, which were later embraced by the industry as the PA-DSS. In 2007, Visa launched a series of phased-in mandates in the U.S. and in Canada requiring, by no later than 1 July 2010, acquirers to ensure that merchants and agents use only compliant payment applications. With the successful adoption of these mandates, Visa launched similar mandates for its remaining global regions, ensuring full compliance by no later than 1 July 2012. More recently, Visa announced best practices for data field encryption, tokenization and card account data elimination to help reduce merchant vulnerabilities caused by storing sensitive information.

Mixamo Unveils Unparalleled Blender Character Animation Support
New Mixamo-Blender Workflow Integration Can Save Blender Artists Up To 75% In Production Time
SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 24 -- Mixamo Inc. today announced new support for Blender users looking to create high-quality character animations for their 3D projects. The new end-to-end workflow provides the Blender community with a seamless process to add animations to characters created in Blender or from Mixamo's Character Creator Suite directly. The entire collection of Mixamo motions is now accessible to Blender users, which can be found at http://www.mixamo.com.
Luc Barthelet, CEO of virtual world Tirnua (http://www.tirnua.com), has already had great success using the Mixamo-Blender workflow. "We were able to integrate Mixamo with our Blender production pipeline quite easily; it has enabled us to add realistic motions to Tirnua five-times faster than if we were to animate by hand," says Barthelet. "Having access to the entire Mixamo collection of animations will be a huge benefit to us as we continue to build up the rich simulation world of Tirnua."
"Mixamo is the first service to offer Blender users easy access to high-quality animations that can be customized and retargeted to any character in real-time," says Mixamo Co-founder and CTO, Stefano Corazza. "With Mixamo, the Blender community can easily apply animations to any character in their 3D scenes by following a simple end-to-end workflow process that we developed."
Blender users can bring Mixamo animations into their projects in several ways depending on their needs, using Collada or BVH format based workflows. Whether importing their Blender-created character models into Mixamo or creating rigged models on Mixamo with the Character Creator Suite, Blender users can customize their animations on characters of their choosing and then easily bring them back into their Blender project. Because Mixamo's sophisticated service simplifies the character animation process through automated, real-time controls, Blender users save up to 75% in production times and 80% in costs.
Mixamo Inc. is a Silicon Valley, VC-funded company founded by 3D pioneers Stefano Corazza, CTO, and Nazim Kareemi, CEO. Based on research from Stanford University's BioMotion lab, Mixamo offers the first online 3D character animation service that provides 3D game developers the power to customize and create professional-quality character animations at unprecedented speeds. Mixamo currently employs a team of outstanding computer vision experts, 3D animators, software engineers and serial entrepreneurs from around the world.
Barix Introduces IP Intercom and Announcement Device for Public Transportation Industry
ZURICH, Aug. 24 -- Barix AG, a pioneer in IP-based audio transmission, intercom, control and monitoring systems, introduces the Annuncicom 155 IP intercom and announcement device developed foremost for use on trains and in rail stations and tunnels.
The device, to be introduced at the Innotrans rail transportation show in Germany (Messe Berlin Exhibition Centre, September 21-24, Hall 4.1, Stand 216), enables systems integrators to set up tailored communication systems ranging from simple door intercom, PA and background music systems to complex monitoring functions and emergency announcement systems. It is also the first Barix device to meet EN50155 standard requirements for rail vehicle installations. ("Railways Applications Electronic Equipment Used on Rolling Stock.")
The basic principle of an Annuncicom 155 communication system is both elaborate and simple. At least two devices are connected to a standard TCP/IP LAN network to exchange live announcements as well as priority, monitoring and control information for a standalone system. Barix SIP firmware can enable integration into conventional SIP-based telephone systems. Control signals and a serial port allow the connection of a selector switch, buttons or display. This allows for destination selection and control and display of connection status.
The Annuncicom 155 system can operate as a standalone system or in conjunction with PCs and central IT management in a standard network, enabling low-cost and quick configuration of the communication system while guaranteeing future expansion.
"As with all Barix products, the Annuncicom 155 is based on standard TCP/IP and works with Audio-over-IP. This means it can be integrated easily and conveniently into existing networks, and allows for wide-range networking and deployment - even in Multicast mode to simultaneously address any number of subscribers," said Johannes G. Rietschel, CEO and Founder of Barix AG. "Its stable design is perfectly suitable for harsh everyday operation in trains, buses and ships, as well as for deployment in general applications under harsh environments."
The Annuncicom 155 conforms to the usual transportation standards, including EN50121 and EN50155. Devices without EN50155 conformity are typically not used in trains, carriages and other rolling stock for railways.

WD® Livewire(TM) Powerline AV Network Kit Gives Consumers Instant 200 Mbps High-Speed Network Connections Anywhere in the Home
Plug-and-play Device Uses Existing Electrical Outlets to Stream HD Video to the Connected Home Theater
LAKE FOREST, Calif., Aug. 24 -- WD® (NYSE:WDC), the world's leader in external storage solutions, today introduced its new WD Livewire(TM) Powerline AV Network Kit (photo), a HomePlug® AV compatible solution that enables consumers to use their existing electrical outlets to extend secure and reliable high-speed Internet connections throughout the home. Complementing the WD TV® line of media players, the WD Livewire Powerline AV Network Kit enables consumers to easily and affordably deliver HD video streams to the home theater, transfer large files or play multi-player online games, all without running network cables around the home. With four ports on each of two adapters included in the kit, the WD Livewire Powerline AV Network Kit offers users the ability to connect their router and up to seven additional devices to their high-speed network.
According to research from Parks Associates, an increasing number of consumers own connected devices such as HDTVs, Blu-ray Disc(TM) players, game consoles and digital media players such as the WD TV Live Plus HD media player (Home Networks for Consumer Electronics 2009). By the end of 2010, Parks Associates forecasts consumers will own 111 million of these devices, with 37 million Internet-capable devices in the U.S. alone, but "connecting" them can be challenging and costly. In a recent Parks Associates survey, 42 percent of respondents unwilling to connect their TVs to the Internet indicated that either their router was too far from the device or it would be too complicated to set up or both (Digital Media Evolution II 2010).
Featuring HomePlug AV technology, the WD Livewire Powerline AV Network Kit provides users with data transfer speeds up to 200 megabits per second (Mbps), enabling glitch-free playback of Full-HD 1080p video streams on up to seven connected devices. Setup is as easy as plugging in a lamp. Consumers do not need to undertake home improvement projects to route new wiring between rooms. They simply plug one of the two adapters in the kit into their router and an electrical outlet then plug the other adapter into another outlet where they need access to wired network connections. Users can stream video to four connected devices in the home theater and also gain an additional three network ports by their router.
For an integrated entertainment solution, users can store digital media on WD's My Book® World Edition(TM) home network drive and stream photos, music and HD video via the WD Livewire Powerline AV Network Kit to one of the WD TV line of media players or other DLNA®-compliant devices located throughout the home.
"Consumers are accumulating an increasing number of Internet-capable connected TVs, video game consoles and media players providing access to exciting online content through services such as Netflix®, YouTube(TM) and Pandora®," said Dale Pistilli, vice president of marketing for WD's branded products group. "Wireless networks, while popular, don't always deliver the reliable high-speed connections needed to sustain HD video streaming. Meanwhile, drilling holes for new Ethernet cables is complicated, expensive and messy. With the WD Livewire Powerline AV Network Kit, it's truly easy to enjoy all the HD streaming and broadband Internet capabilities of these great new devices anywhere there is an electrical outlet."
WD Livewire Powerline AV Network Kit
WD Livewire Powerline AV Network Kit features:

This will be the biggest online archive of Notting Hill Carnival faces,
memories and emotions ever seen, with the video wall featuring every aspect
of the Carnival experience. It'll be a unique record of the bank holiday
weekend made by the people who make Carnival special - the people on the
street.
WinkBall launched their unique technology and approach to making everyday

which can be downloaded from a secure FTP site and then simply
integrated into an organisation's own ERP or payment system.
Offering an accurate data source is crucial in the ever-changing world of

The Future is Looking Bright... 'My Girl,' Debut Single From Sensational New Group Mindless Behavior, Released on iTunes
Videos And Debut Album #1 Girl To Follow
SANTA MONICA, Calif., Aug. 24 -- On Tuesday, August 24, the future truly arrives with the release on iTunes of "My Girl," the debut single from the four talented 13-year-old boys of Mindless Behavior--Prodigy, Roc Royal, Ray Ray and Princeton.
The bubbly, infectious track, produced by Walter Millsap (Beyonce, Timbaland, Alicia Keys, J. Lo), is the first issued from the group's forthcoming Conjunction/Streamline/Interscope debut album, #1 Girl. The music video, including a special 3-D version, will premiere on AOL early next week.
#1 Girl is all about young men looking to find their number one girl, whether on explosive party tracks, fun mid-tempos or introspective ballads. Among the album's other writers & producers are Vincent Herbert, Candice Nelson (Mary J. Blige, Ciara, Britney Spears), Polow da Don (Pussycat Dolls, Ludacris, Fergie, Usher, Rich Boy), Boi-1da (Eminem, Drake), and Harold Lilly (Alicia Keys, Monica, Mario).
The Conjunction Productions team and Streamline Records head Vincent Herbert came up with the concept of the group in 2008, and Mindless Behavior was formed after an audition hosted by Conjunction--a teaming of Millsap, Keisha Gamble, Candice Nelson and choreographer David Scott (who with Gamble helped discover B2K). After two years of artist development to hone the boys' singing, rapping and dancing, Herbert, who also discovered Lady Gaga and has executive produced all of her music, brought the boys to Streamline's joint venture partner, Interscope Records.
"The future is looking bright... I want you to remember their name," said hip-hop mogul Sean "Diddy" Combs in a video blog after seeing Mindless Behavior perform.
If the reaction of teen girls during the group's recent tour of Los Angeles high schools as well as opening sets with Justin Bieber (Pop-Con 2010) and the Backstreet Boys (This Is Us 2010) is any indication, Mindless Behavior may soon join the ranks of great young male groups who preceded them, from the Jackson 5 and New Edition to N'Sync and B2K.

DSLR Redefined: Sony Introduces New Cameras Powered by World's First Translucent Mirror Technology Enabling Simultaneous Auto Focus and Capture in an Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera
New Models Offer Continuous Phase Detect AF During 10 fps High-Speed Shooting and Full HD Movie Shooting
SAN DIEGO, Aug. 24 -- Sony today introduced two new alpha cameras (models SLT-A55V and SLT-A33) that adopt Sony's newly-developed Translucent Mirror Technology(TM), which achieves the highest-level of auto focus speed for both still image and movie shooting.
Translucent Mirror Technology(TM) provides performance previously unattainable with traditional DSLR technology. Using the new technology, the a55 and a33 models can continuously and quickly focus (with TTL phase-detection) while shooting stills and recording video--even in full HD, allowing desired moments to be captured in tack sharp focus, high-definition video. They can shoot continuously at up to 10 frames per second on the a55 (and up to seven on the a33), achieving shooting speeds that are the fastest in the industry for an APS-C size sensor-equipped interchangeable lens cameras under $1000.
"This is the most innovative Interchangeable Lens Digital Camera that Sony has ever created," said Kristen Elder, director of the digital imaging business group. "Our Translucent Mirror Technology is one of the most significant SLR structural changes in more than a decade."
By displaying the images received by the Exmor(TM) APS HD CMOS Sensor, picture quality of the camera's live view image has enhanced drastically. Coupled with the quick and accurate phase detect AF and 100 percent coverage Tru-Finder(TM) electronic viewfinder, the Quick AF Live View feature has been further advanced.
Translucent Mirror Technology
Both cameras are equipped with a translucent mirror, which enables light passing through the lens to be simultaneously received by the image sensor and the auto focus sensor, allowing continuous shooting and continuous focusing at speeds never before possible. The a55 offers the world's fastest 10 fps high-speed burst shooting with continuous AF (TTL phase-detection) in an interchangeable lens digital camera with APS-C sensor.
Because of its structure, the Translucent Mirror Technology(TM) does away with the motion of raising and lowering the mirror. The absence of the moving mirror mechanism contributes to making the whole body size significantly compact compared to traditional DSLR cameras.
By eliminating the need to raise and lower the mirror between shots, the technology makes it possible to achieve focusing while images are captured. Existing systems can only focus in the interval between image capture, limiting the ability to track fast moving subjects. The cameras also have continuous Advance Priority AE Mode and will automatically adjust for the best exposure to help you get the most professional looking results.
High-Speed Capture with Auto Focus
Additionally, a newly developed 15-point AF system assures ultra-fast, high precision focusing. The high-speed shooting with continuous Phase Detect AF tracks rapidly moving subjects accurately. You can capture the decisive moments that you might have otherwise missed.
Creative Video Capture
The continuous phase detect AF also works in movie shooting for the first time in the world. The Translucent Mirror Technology(TM) also allows the a55 and a33 to be the first cameras to ever maintain continuous phase detection AF while recording Full HD AVCHD video. With fast, precise phase detection AF continually tracking subject movement, even fast action and subjects that move quickly towards or away from the camera are easy to keep in focus.
With a large 16.2 megapixel (for the a55) and 14.2 megapixel (for the a33) Exmor(TM) APS HD CMOS sensor, background defocusing effects can be easily captured. The APS-C sensor size is nearly 20 times larger than a traditional compact camcorders' 1/2.88 type image sensor, providing more creative control.
Compatible with all A-mount lenses, video and photography enthusiasts alike can choose from macro to telephoto lenses to achieve their desired artistic effect.
Full-time Live View
Full-time Live View offers unprecedented freestyle shooting versatility with fast, precise AF using either the viewfinder or LCD monitor. The a55 and a33 have a fully articulated 3-inch 921,600 Xtra Fine LCD with TruBlack(TM) technology with 100 percent coverage.
The Tru-Finder eye-level viewfinder provides an unprecedented combination of 100 percent coverage and 1.1x magnification for easy and natural framing. By combining Translucent Mirror and Tru-Finder technologies, a33 and a55 are the first interchangeable lens digital cameras to offer movie recording with the familiar eye-level shooting style - a significant advantage in fast moving and extreme lighting conditions (bright sunlight and low-light situations).
The variable angle tilt LCD is adjustable to accommodate shooting from low or high angles. The electronic view finder has a high-resolution effective 1.15 million dots conversion Xtra Fine LCD(TM) display, is bright and easy to see even in low light, has a selectable shooting parameter display and shows the effects of exposure and white balance adjustments.
Advanced Shooting Features
With an Exmor(TM) APS HD CMOS sensor, BIONZ® high-speed image processing engine and ultra-high ISO sensitivity (ISO 100-12,800), the a55 and a33 cameras offer advanced shooting features. These make it easy to get the best shot, even in difficult lighting conditions.
Auto HDR shoots and combines three frames into a single high dynamic range (HDR) photo with rich shadow and highlight detail. Multi frame NR shoots and combines six frames into a single photo, enabling smooth low-light imaging at half the noise level. Hand-held Twilight shoots and combines six frames into a single photo, suppressing blur to enable clear night-scene imaging without a tripod or flash.
3D Sweep Panorama(TM) technology creates two images from a single frame, enabling panoramic photos to be viewed in 3D on compatible 3D systems and other devices that support 3D technology. Using the a55 model, built-in GPS capability enables global positioning coordinates to be recorded along with the date and time. HDMI(TM) connectivity enables stunningly beautiful PhotoTV HD display of images on compatible Sony BRAVIA® TVs.
AUTO+ (Advanced Auto) mode offers the same benefits as Auto mode and more, resulting in cleaner, more dynamic pictures and fewer missed shots. The camera automatically recognizes the correct scene mode, then quickly shoots and combines up to six shots to produce images with greater clarity, optimum dynamic range using Auto HDR technology and lower image noise using 6 shots layering technology.
Accessories
The new cameras accept both Memory Stick PRO Duo(TM) (including Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo(TM)) and SD (including both SDHC and SDXC formats) media (all sold separately). With a 30MB per second transfer rate, Sony's Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo HX offers the best performance of all memory cards whether in continuous shooting mode or transferring data to other media.
A new dedicated microphone (models ECM-ALST1 and ECM-CG50) will also be available.
Pricing and Availability
The a55 and a33 cameras will cost about $750 and $650 (respectively) for the body only and about $850 and $750 (respectively) for the body and 18-55mm zoom lens. The a33 camera will be available in September and the a55 model will be available in October at Sony Style® retail stores http://www.Sonystyle.com/retail) and at authorized dealers nationwide.

Shooting for the Stars: Sony Breaks New Ground Again in DSLR Space With New Camera, Lenses
Latest a (alpha) Offers Full HD Movie Capture, 3D Sweep Panorama and More
SAN DIEGO, Aug. 24 -- Sony today introduced an a (alpha) DSLR camera (model SLR-a560) that leverages Sony's Exmor (TM) APS HD CMOS sensor to make it easier for active shooters to get the best shot without missing a moment. Along with the a33 and a55 cameras (also announced today), the a560 model is one of the only DSLR cameras with Multi-frame Noise Reduction, Sweep Panorama(TM) mode, 3D Sweep Panorama and Full HD 1920x1080 60i video capture.
This 14.2 megapixel a560 camera offers the same features of its predecessor, the innovative a550, which introduced Quick AF Live View, 7fps continuous shooting and Auto HDR to the step-up DSLR class.
Additionally, Sony is adding to its already strong line-up of more than 30 A-mount lenses with new models made for seasoned photographers and those new to the DSLR space. Today, Sony expands its A-Mount lens line-up for a DSLR cameras with three new lenses--a Carl Zeiss® Distagon T* 24mm F2 ZA SSM (model SAL24F20Z), a DT 35mm F1.8 SAM (model SAL35F18) and an 85mm F2.8 SAM (model SAL85F28).
"These new lenses and camera show our commitment to the DSLR market and that we will never stop innovating," said Kristen Elder, director of the Digital Imaging business at Sony Electronics. "These products complement our overall Sony® Alpha(TM) lineup, which we are significantly expanding today. The camera offers a choice to those consumers who want to gain the benefits of professional level shooting speed as well as be able to capture video with in a traditional style DSLR."
The a560 camera provides excellent picture quality, particularly in low-light scenarios. A new generation of Sony Exmor (TM)APS HD CMOS sensor employs low-noise processing for high-quality pictures. The BIONZ ® image processor has color-noise reduction that helps achieve low noise up to ISO 12800, without sacrificing fine detail. Multi-frame Noise Reduction stacks a high-speed burst of six frames, creating a single low-noise exposure that boosts effective sensitivity as high as ISO 25600.
Quick AF Live View
With Quick AF Live View, the a560 camera can focus just as quickly in Live View as when shooting through the eye-level viewfinder, which is unlike any other DSLR in its class.
Because composing shots on the LCD monitor is becoming increasingly important to DSLR users, Sony has equipped this camera with two Live View functions and a 3-inch (measured diagonally) LCD screen that tilts 90 degrees up or down. The a560 has a high resolution 921,600 pixel Xtra Fine LCD(TM) display.
Sony's Quick AF Live View uses two sensors to maintain the same focusing speed as with the optical viewfinder. While the speed of Quick AF Live View is ideal for every day shooting, Focus Check Live View enables critical framing and magnification for setting precise focus in macro and tripod shooting.
Focus Check Live View mode simplifies critical assessment of the finest image details. A real-time 'feed' from the main sensor can be viewed on the LCD monitor, with switchable magnification allowing close-up confirmation of delicate manual focus adjustments. Contrast AF method is selectable in focus check Live View mode.
Temporary 7x and 14x zoom views enable you to focus on extremely fine detail while the 1x view shows 100 percent framing in the LCD.
Fast Shooting Speeds
With its unique sensor-processor combination, the a560 camera is a leader in its class with up to seven frames per second shooting speed for under $1,000. Using the optical viewfinder, you can shoot up to three frames with Quick AF Live View, which helps you capture the decisive moment when shooting fast moving subjects like in sports.
HD Movie Recording
The a560 camera offers the extra convenience of high-definition video recording. This model also captures Full HD (1920 x 1080i) video in high-quality AVCHD(TM) files that can be easily enjoyed on a compatible HD television via the cameras built-in HDMI(TM) terminal (cable not included). The camera includes built-in stereo microphones for high-quality audio recording.
With multi-shot technology, the a560 camera's high-speed sensor and processor rapidly captures and assembles many frames to realize unmatched low-noise, extended dynamic range, wide panoramas and 3D images.
The a560 offers versatile creative control even when shooting movies. Creativity is also enhanced by the ability to apply white balance and Creative Style settings, as well as Aperture Priority (A) mode aperture settings, to movies. What's more, exposure compensation can be adjusted even while movie shooting is in progress.
Sweep Panorama Technology
Featuring Sweep Panorama technology, the a560 model captures breathtaking shots up to 180 degree horizontal or 126-degree vertical shots (18 mm focal length).
With 3D Sweep Panorama mode, the camera can shoot 3D panoramic still images with a single lens. The high-speed burst of frames is stitched together using innovative processing techniques to automatically create detail-packed 3D panoramas. These files can be enjoyed in stunning 3D on compatible 3D televisions (other accessories are required).
In-Camera High Dynamic Range
In-camera High Dynamic Range (HDR) has been further enhanced incorporating three shots. It can capture highlights, midtones and shadows. Unlike HDR features in other DSLR cameras, Sony's unique positional interpolation technology can overcome slight changes in camera position and align individual shots so that a tripod is not required.
The feature handles severe backlighting and other high-contrast scenes like looking out a window into bright daylight. The in-camera auto HDR technology combines the highlight, midtone and shadow detail of three separate captures into one remarkably natural looking image. The a560 offers a maximum Auto HDR range of 6EV.
Multi Frame NR is a new function where, when the shutter is released, the camera automatically takes 6 frames at the currently selected shutter speed, aperture, and ISO setting, and then combines them into a single JPEG image with a reduction in noise at the selected aperture and shutter speed that is equivalent to approximately two ISO steps. In addition, ISO expansion achieves class-leading, ultra-high sensitivity equivalent to ISO25600, while accurate subject detection assures high-precision alignment of the 6 frames during compositing.
Accessories
The new camera accepts both Memory Stick PRO Duo(TM) (including Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo(TM)) and SD (including both SDHC and SDXC formats) media (all sold separately). With a 30MB per second transfer rate, Sony's Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo HX offers the best performance of all memory cards whether in continuous shooting mode or transferring data to other media.
Lenses for Active Shooters
Made for experienced and budding photographers alike, the Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 24mm F2 ZA SSM (model SAL24F20Z) functions as a wide-angle 24mm lens on full-frame cameras with 36mm (35mm equivalent) lens sensors, or as a 36mm equivalent lens ideal for general use on cameras with APS-C sensors. Jointly developed with Carl Zeiss, it features the highly-regarded Carl Zeiss Distagon designed for wide-angle lenses.
This lens is distinguished by its fast response focus and extremely quiet, very smooth operation thanks to its built-in SSM (Super Sonic wave Motor).
It offers a wide and therefore highly versatile focal range from 0.19m to infinity, and features a nine-blade circular aperture that along with the large F2 maximum aperture contributes to smooth, natural bokeh effects.
In keeping with traditional Carl Zeiss design, the all-metal lens barrel has been finished to a very high standard resulting in a visibly high-quality appearance.
Offering photographers at all levels great value and performance in a compact and lightweight design, the new DT 35mm F1.8 SAM (SAL35F18) weighs just 6 ounces. It can be added to a lens kit system and carried without noticeably increasing the weight of the bag.
With an approximately 50mm (35mm equivalent) focal length on an APS-C sensor, this lens is ideal for snapshots and portraits under a wide range of shooting conditions. The high-speed F1.8 maximum aperture is particularly advantageous for hand held shooting in low light.
At just 0.8 feet, the DT 35mm F1.8 SAM (SAL35F18) has the shortest minimum focus in its class, making it an excellent choice for dramatic close-ups too. Whatever the shot, the internal Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) drives the focusing group directly and ensures responsive and fluid autofocus operation.
The new 85mm F2.8 SAM (SAL85F28) lens is a full-frame lens in that offers performance and affordability. The 85mm focal length is a standard for portraiture because of the natural perspective that it provides. On an APS-C sensor camera the 85mm F2.8 SAM functions as a 127.5mm (35mm equivalent) telephoto lens - and features a Sonnar-type optical design that is considered ideal for mid-range telephoto lenses.
The lens is sharp center to corner, and features smooth defocusing thanks to its large F2.8 maximum aperture and circular aperture design. At two feet, the minimum focusing distance is the shortest in its class, and SAM motor technology ensures smooth autofocus operation.
The quality optical and mechanical features of the lens mean it is suitable for serious photography and should more than satisfy intermediate and advanced users alike.
Pricing and Availability
The a560 model with the camera body and 18-55mm kit lens will cost about $750 and will be available in October. With the body only, it will cost about $650. The Carl Zeiss Distagon T* 24mm F2 SSM (model SAL24F20Z), DT 35mm F1.8 SAM (model SAL35F18) and 85mm F2.8 SAM (model SAL85F28) lenses will be available in October for about $1,250, $200, $250 respectively.
The cameras, lens and a range of accessories will be available at Sony Style® retail stores (http://www.sonystyle.com/retail) and at authorized dealers nationwide.

Ninth generation Catalyst e-discovery document repository provides greater search performance, ease-of-use and automated production management
DENVER, Aug. 23 -- Catalyst Repository Systems, Inc., (http://www.catalystsecure.com), a pioneer in providing cloud-based document repositories for e-discovery and other complex legal matters, today introduced version 9.0 of its flagship product, Catalyst CR. The new version includes a fully integrated production module, expanded correlation navigators, review module enhancements and a new user interface. Most notably Catalyst CR 9.0 updates include features requested by Catalyst's expanding user base and represent a significant step towards putting complete control of the e-discovery process in the hands of Catalyst CR users, from processing to production, while maximizing efficiency and scalability.
New features in the Catalyst CR 9.0 platform include:
-- A fully automated production module that allows users to identify and
folder documents for productions, convert and endorse them in a
variety of formats, create load files, and run productions.
-- Enhanced "Correlation Navigators" that allow users to analyze search
results using a variety of fields, text, and concepts--all drawn
dynamically from the user's search across millions of documents.
-- Searchable review folders allowing reviewers and administrators to
build any combination of field and text searches to check for
privileged, sensitive and other key information before releasing the
documents.
-- Review module enhancements that provide more control for review
administrators and allow administrators to assign, modify assignments
more easily and provide new capabilities for user self assignments.
-- New export options that provide faster output and more flexibility
including MDB formats.
-- A revised user interface that provides more rapid and intuitive access
to Catalyst CR and its productivity modules.
"Automating the e-discovery process and delivering it via a secure cloud has been Catalyst's mission for more than a decade," explained John Tredennick, Catalyst's founder and CEO. "Our goal is put full control of their e-discovery processing in our client's hands--as much as they might have if they used an appliance in-house. The difference with our cloud-based product is scale. Our clients can run the product from end-to-end but have the advantage of hundreds of servers working on their behalf. They also get a dedicated team of savvy professionals to continually update and enhance the system."
Catalyst began automating the e-discovery process with the availability of Fast Track Data Loading. Since its availability 18 months ago, Fast Track has processed over 10,000 automatic data loads. Catalyst built on this success in early 2010 with Fast Track Automated Processing, which allows users to upload raw files directly into Catalyst for processing and loading. The features in Catalyst CR 9.0 achieve the goal of complete system automation. Now, those same users can export and produce documents themselves--in any volume or format.
Catalyst CR 9.0 turns the e-discovery services model on its head with the first integrated e-discovery product covering the heart of the litigation lifecycle--from processing and loading raw files to search, analytics, culling, review and production. Because the data and process are hosted in the cloud, the Catalyst CR platform effectively eliminates IT and system administration costs. That frees the litigation management team to focus on review and analysis, rather than software administration.

Teletrac's Award-Winning Hours of Service Technology Gets Even Better
Drivers can now complete e-logs online, letting fleets comply using part timers
GARDEN GROVE, Calif., Aug. 23 -- Teletrac Inc., a leading provider of intelligent driving solutions, today unveiled a pivotal new feature for its trucking industry customers using Fleet Director for fleet management, hours of service and e-logs: the Driver e-Log Web Site. This new software-as-a-service feature assists fleets utilizing both full and part time drivers by enabling them to fully comply with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) hours of service (HOS) rules for electronic logging.
The new Driver e-Log Web Site lets drivers complete their e-logs not just in-cab, but from any Web-connected computer or smartphone. As a result, fleets can more readily capture full HOS information from part-time drivers who may also drive for other companies. This enhancement helps ensure that fleets meet FMCSA guidelines. Further, dispatchers and operations managers can view driver logs and reports online, providing a real-time snapshot of the company's operations.
In addition to aiding fleets, the new Fleet Director enhancement gives drivers greater convenience by letting them view their e-logs via the Web. Drivers can also add information that may have been overlooked in the cab, giving them greater flexibility to complete paperwork to ensure full regulatory compliance. Drivers can view unsigned logs, sign and submit logs, add status changes to unfinished logs, and run reports.
A real-world example of the convenience this features offers users: driver #1 returns to the yard and leaves the truck. Driver #1 is still on duty but not driving. Driver #2 takes that truck on another run, leaving driver #1 at the shop to finish up his day. Driver #1 still needs to log off duty, but no longer has a truck available to close out the day. With Teletrac's new driver e-Log Web site for HOS, Driver # 1 simply finds a computer or smartphone with internet connectivity and logs off.
Of critical importance, however, is that once an entry is made, neither drivers nor anyone else can tamper with the e-log. All entries, including additions if any, are archived by Teletrac and tied to the user's ID, becoming part of the compliance record. Only an authenticated supervisor can make changes in case of error - all changes due to errors are tied to the supervisor's identity as part of the compliance record. Fleet Director completes the record by integrating HOS entries with vehicle status monitoring, such as "ignition on" and GPS location data.
The FMCSA recently issued new technical requirements for EOBRs, and Teletrac EOBRs already meet these new standards. Fleet Director already integrates its electronic on-board recorder (EOBR) with GPS tracking and other advanced features.
Further, FMCSA will now require EOBRs on all trucks in fleets found to have at least 10 percent violations in their HOS logs. Many observers think FMCSA will eventually require EOBRs on entire classes of vehicles, regardless of prior compliance. Teletrac-equipped fleets will already be in compliance, even if they had been deemed a violator under FMCSA rules.
Already proven and trusted by more than 10,000 fleets in the U.S. alone, Teletrac's Fleet Director locates, tracks and monitors the position and operation of fleet vehicles, giving fleet managers unprecedented visibility into operations - delivering cost-saving efficiencies such as real-time GPS tracking of vehicles from the desktop, automatic route optimization, and detailed reporting for advanced decision support and efficient regulatory compliance.
Fleet Director HOS eliminates costly paperwork and violations, and reduces audit risk. It automates HOS tracking and reporting and integrates with the electronic on-board recorder (EOBRs) to help ensure full FMCSA and DOT compliance, providing accurate logs and tamper-proof archiving.
"We are continually striving to improve our Fleet Director solution that offers benefits to both drivers and managers," stated Drew Hamilton, executive vice president, Teletrac. "We will continue to use the latest technologies and innovations to add new components to better serve our customers. The Driver e-Log Web site is one such example, providing drivers the convenience and flexibility to complete their e-logs while meeting compliance guidelines."
About Teletrac
Already proven and trusted by more than 10,000 fleets, in the US alone, Teletrac's flagship solution, Fleet Director, saves fleet owners time, money, and reduces their carbon footprint. Teletrac customers report up to 30% lower fuel usage, an average of 15% less driver overtime, 12% higher productivity and less unauthorized vehicle use.

AT&T Enlists SunEdison to Add 2MW of Solar Power in California by 2011
Trade Street site in San Diego, first of 6 California based solar power installations to be activated
SAN DIEGO, Aug. 23 -- AT&T* and SunEdison today announced that SunEdison, a leading worldwide solar energy services provider and subsidiary of MEMC Electronic Materials (NYSE:WFR), will expand AT&T's national solar initiative by activating a new roof top solar power installation in San Diego. San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders as well as executives from AT&T and SunEdison were on hand to officially flip the switch on the solar power system. In addition to this installation in San Diego, AT&T has contracts with SunEdison to deploy five other solar power installations in California by the second quarter of 2011, equating to approximately 2 megawatts (MW) of total solar capacity for all six sites. The additional California solar deployments will be located in Dunnigan, Commerce, Mojave, Santa Ana and West Sacramento.
The solar power installation in San Diego is a 296 kW rooftop mounted photovoltaic system that will generate an estimated 420,000 kWh of energy in its first year of operation alone. Over 20 years, the power installation will generate more than 7.7 million kWh of energy - enough energy to power more than 720 US homes for one year. The environmental attributes associated with the solar power installation will avoid more than 8 million pounds of carbon dioxide during the initial 20 years of operation - the equivalent of taking more than 800 cars off the road according to SunEdison projections.
"Partnerships such as this one between AT&T and SunEdison show why San Diego continues to be the national leader in solar energy," said San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders. "Our residents and businesses have embraced clean energy, which not only benefits our environment, but also our region's economy."
The program is made possible through a strategic power purchase agreement (PPA) between SunEdison and AT&T under which SunEdison will construct, monitor and maintain an additional five solar power installations in California. In return, AT&T will buy the energy produced from the solar systems to offset their grid demand. Once activated, the six systems will total an estimated 2 megawatts of solar capacity and will generate over 3.2 million kWh of energy within the first year of operation. According to SunEdison projections, the environmental attributes associated with the six systems will avoid an estimated 62 million pounds of CO2 over 20 years of operation.
"We are continually seeking opportunities to add renewable energy resources to power our business operations, and this agreement provides more sustainable solutions for our energy needs in California," said John Schinter, director of energy, AT&T.
"SunEdison makes solar a reality for commercial clients throughout the world," said Brian Jacolick, general manager, Americas for SunEdison. "Through smart design, proven technologies and our strong financing capabilities, SunEdison helps clients like AT&T realize the benefits solar energy offers. "
AT&T recently released its 2009 Citizenship and Sustainability Report highlighting the company's progress toward up to $865 million in multi-year commitments for important education, environmental and volunteerism programs that help strengthen communities and stimulate economic growth.
