New Alcatel-Lucent Book "The Shift" Maps the Future of Web 2.0 and the Role of Service Providers in it
Market Research Highlights How New Global Business Models are Key to Success; $100 Billion in Potential New Revenue in the U.S. Market Alone
CABLELABS SUMMER CONFERENCE 2010, KEYSTONE, Colorado, August 16, 2010-- Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced
the book launch of The Shift: The Evolving Market, Players and Business
Models in a 2.0 World. This powerful new book, which draws on a wealth of
research and features a forward by Marshall Kirkpatrick of ReadWriteWeb, a
leading mind in the application developer community, discusses how the
emerging ecosystem of service providers, developers, advertisers, consumers
and business uses stands to benefit when smarter networks are used as
development platforms. The resulting potential market opportunity is as much
as $100 billion within the U.S. market alone.
At its core The Shift: The Evolving Market, Players and
Business Models in a 2.0 World analyzes the rapid pace of consumer technology
adoption and its impact on service providers, enterprises, application
developers, content providers, and handset manufacturers as they scramble to
meet the exploding demand for bandwidth and Web 2.0 service access anytime,
anywhere and over any device. It cites market research commissioned by
Alcatel-Lucent to demonstrate how a collaborative communications ecosystem is
necessary to address the challenges of consumer, enterprise and vertical
markets currently limited by industry fragmentation.
"The Shift is the result of over a year of research and
analysis and maps a compelling and profitable future for both the service
provider and application developer in the Web 2.0 world," said Allison Cerra,
head of marketing for Alcatel-Lucent Americas and one of the book's authors.
"Specifically we outline how additional value is inserted into the ecosystem
when service providers expose intelligent network capabilities. The resulting
benefits are clear for everyone -- end users, developers, advertisers and
service providers. It requires an approach where consumers have control of
their experience, developers benefit from enhanced capabilities, and service
providers monetize their investments to fuel future innovation."
"This book is a good and thorough analysis of how and why
intelligent, instrumented networks could prove a valuable foundation for a
whole new world of innovation online," said Kirkpatrick.
Sample key findings:
The book's research shows consumers, developers, enterprises
and vertical markets are willing to pay for network-based features and there
are broad societal benefits within government, healthcare and education when
applications innovation is accelerated. Among the book's findings:
- Parents, social networkers, online video enthusiasts and
gamers value applications that incorporate network-based intelligence.
They will pay 25-35 percent more for a service with three capabilities
operating simultaneously vs. a service with one capability.
- Over 50% of consumers are comfortable sharing sensitive
profile information, such as location, presence and online behaviors,
with their mobile provider.
- Nearly 50 percent of commercial developers would use network-based APIs
and are willing to pay twice as much for APIs bundled together vs.
those sold separately. Enterprise IP developers will pay up to three
times more.
- A third of U.S. advertisers would use network services that enable them
to deliver advertisements across social media sites based on user
interests and behaviors.
Despite the complexities created by today's industry
fragmentation, the book found consumers are stringing together different
services and devices, convinced it is worth both their time and money. For
example, watching a video today often requires consumers to: load the video
onto a mobile video device like an iPod; watch on-demand streaming video over
their PC or hook it up to their television; access the video directly on
their TV if they have a set-top box or special Internet-equipped DVD player.
This complexity can be eliminated to provide a seamless, enhanced service
experience when the intelligent networks of service providers are leveraged.
Cerra and the book's co-author, Christina James, who also
supports Alcatel-Lucent marketing, analyzed commissioned primary research and
secondary market data to gain an indepth and objective view of the industry
before writing the book. The Shift: The Evolving Market, Players and Business
Models in a 2.0 World can be obtained at http://www.theshiftonline.com.

First-ever console-quality, online music-rhythm game can be played with your music collection and is embeddable anywhere on the Web
LAS VEGAS and COLOGNE, Germany, Aug. 16 -- Browser-based gaming innovator InstantAction®, an operating business of IAC (NASDAQ:IACI), today unveiled Instant Jam(TM), the world's first console-quality, online music-rhythm game that is free to play, embeddable anywhere online, and playable along with thousands of songs consumers own in their music libraries. Instant Jam is currently available in a Facebook Beta Program and is being shown this week at gamescom. The Instant Jam Beta Program will be open to the public in subsequent weeks through the game's site (http://www.instantjam.com) and embedded versions throughout the web.
The first original game from InstantAction's Vegas-based games studio, Instant Jam delivers a core game experience with high quality 3D graphics through the browser and popular features of social games. InstantAction's embeddable platform enables Instant Jam to be played anytime, anywhere - including on Facebook, http://www.instantjam.com, editorial sites, blogs and more. All that's required is an Internet connection.
Untethered from any console, players can jam along to their music library with support for thousands of the world's most popular songs by tapping their computer keyboards or playing with their favorite USB guitar controllers. Players can challenge their friends, earn or purchase virtual goods that enhance their game play, gift items, and even share the game online as easily as they would a YouTube video.
"We created Instant Jam because we believe people should be able to play along to any song from any band or genre they like, rather than be confined to a handful of pre-set songs chosen for the game they're playing," said Louis Castle, CEO of InstantAction. "We also strongly believe that games - like other forms of entertainment media - should be easier for consumers to discover, try, enjoy and share. Instant Jam embodies all of this and provides music lovers with a powerful new way to interact while experiencing their music."
Instant Jam launches with thousands of note charts supporting the world's most popular songs - more than all other console music-rhythm game franchises combined - with support for dozens of songs being added each week. Each note chart is designed by an experienced game design team to provide an immersive gaming experience that really makes you feel like you are playing a guitar; Instant Jam does not simply track song beats as some algorithmically generated programs do.
"The best part of working on a AAA game that lives online is that, unlike a boxed product, we're not done when the game goes live; we're just getting started," said Amir Rahimi, Executive Producer of Instant Jam. "Currently, Instant Jam has all of the game play people have come to expect from premium rhythm games on consoles. We'll be continually adding support for new songs, major features such as fully customizable avatars, and more social elements based on feedback from our community."
At launch, Instant Jam will include the following key features:
-- Your Music. Instant Jam automatically checks your music library to
match your songs to suggested note charts so you can play right away
with your music - be it a legendary rock classic or an emerging indie
band. Or you can play your songs with any note chart you wish.
-- More Music. If you see something on the playlist you don't own, simply
purchase new songs from Amazon or iTunes through the game and get
in-game value in excess of the cost of the song. Purchased songs are
added to your music library and yours to use anywhere you play your
music.
-- Your Game. Instant Jam is free to play via social features as you earn
fans, plays and new virtual items for bragging rights. Level up and
earn new items, or quickly purchase them with micro-transactions to
enhance game play.
-- Console-Quality Game play. With game play consistent with the best
music games on the market, Instant Jam is playable from within any
browser without long, annoying download wait times.
-- Share with Friends. Instant Jam can be embedded anywhere on the Web.
Simply copy and paste the embed URL into your blog or website. Share
the game with your social network and challenge friends to see who
jams best.
-- Universal Play. Instant Jam is launching with thousands of note
charts supporting the world's most popular songs - more than all other
console rhythm-music games combined. Support for dozens of new songs
in a variety of genres from around the globe will be added each week.
The possibilities are endless!
-- Your Style. You can play Instant Jam with standard USB guitar
controllers already in the market or tap away on your keyboard.
-- Coming Soon. The Instant Jam team will be adding new items and
features on an ongoing basis based on community feedback.
"Instant Jam gives consumers a powerful new way to engage with the artists and bands they love; it actually encourages and rewards them for purchasing music they can then play anywhere," said Jed Weitzman, Head of Business Development for InstantAction. "Instant Jam is more than a game - it's an open platform for discovering and experiencing music with friends through the power of social media. It has incredible potential to help artists showcase and sell their music by engaging fans in a genuine and impactful way."
The creators of Instant Jam are a star-studded cast of game industry veterans behind best-selling original franchises such as Steven Spielberg's BOOM BLOX, Command & Conquer, Lands of Lore and Eye of the Beholder, as well as blockbuster licensed original products including The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth I & II, Disney's The Lion King, Blade Runner and Monopoly.
Instant Jam will be available initially on the PC, with Macintosh and Flash versions to follow shortly.

WhatWillTheyLearn.com responds to public demand for focus on education and value
WASHINGTON, Aug. 16 -- Responding to the widespread dissatisfaction with traditional college rankings and the growing demand for universities to refocus on undergraduate education and value, the American Council of Trustees and Alumni unveiled today its 2011 college evaluations on WhatWillTheyLearn.com, a day before the release of U.S. News & World Report's college rankings.
The free website evaluates more than 700 colleges and universities based on their general education curricula: the core courses aimed at providing a strong foundation of knowledge. Mel Elfin, founding editor of USNWR's college rankings, praised the website as "an invaluable and unique additional resource for parents" and The Wall Street Journal called its focus on education "admirable."
The website assigns each institution a grade from "A" to "F" based on how many of the following seven core subjects it requires: Composition, Mathematics, Science, Economics, Foreign Language, Literature, and American Government or History. Only a handful get A's, and most do not require college-level courses in many of these critical subjects.
"The crisis in higher education is about more than money--it's about what we are paying for. And when it comes to ensuring graduates possess the basic skills and knowledge they need to succeed, universities are shortchanging students," said ACTA president Anne D. Neal, speaking at the National Press Club. "Since when is do-it-yourself an educational philosophy?"
Key Findings:
-- Colleges and universities have by and large abandoned a coherent
content-rich general education curriculum, thereby allowing students
to graduate with important gaps in their knowledge:
-- More than 60% of all institutions receive a "C" or worse for
requiring 3 or fewer subjects.
-- Nearly 40% don't require college-level mathematics.
-- Less than 5% of colleges and universities require economics.
-- Less than a third require intermediate-level foreign language, a
broad survey class in American government or history, or
literature.
-- Paying a lot doesn't necessarily get you a lot: Average tuition at the
more than 100 "F" schools is $28,200 (2009 figures). At the 16 "A"
schools, it's $13,200.
-- Public institutions are doing a relatively better job of ensuring
students graduate with some of the basic skills and knowledge they
need than private institutions: More than half (52%) of all privates
receive a "D" or an "F" for requiring 2 or fewer subjects, while a
little under half (44%) of all publics receive a "B" or better for
requiring 4 or more subjects.
The American Council of Trustees and Alumni is an independent non-profit dedicated to academic freedom, academic excellence, and accountability. Since its founding in 1995, ACTA has counseled boards, educated the public and published reports about such issues as good governance, historical literacy, core curricula, the free exchange of ideas, and accreditation in higher education. Verizon Demonstrates Near Gigabit-per-Second Throughput on Its Existing FiOS GPON Platform
Test Shows Current FiOS Network Offers Bandwidth Headroom to Meet Emerging Business and Consumer Needs
WALTHAM, Mass., Aug. 16 -- Verizon has completed a field trial in which it delivered approximately 1 gigabit-per-second bandwidth to a customer on the currently deployed gigabit passive optical network in a live production FiOS network setting. This kind of capacity and versatility will enable Verizon to accommodate a wide array of new and emerging consumer and business services such as 3DTV, desktop virtualization and remote storage, as well as wireless backhaul for the next generation of wireless technologies.
Verizon's GPON platform supports a total throughput of 2.4 Gbps downstream and 1.2 Gbps upstream to customers connected to the PON. This test successfully demonstrated the ability to serve customers on the FiOS network with Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) service.
The latest field trial was conducted in June in Taunton, using an existing GPON system developed by Motorola, a current supplier to Verizon of both BPON (broadband passive optical network) and GPON equipment. The trial, conducted at an existing FiOS business customer location, was intended to demonstrate in a live network setting that currently deployed FiOS equipment can support higher bandwidth services and can deliver 1 Gbps without major change to the network.
"This kind of bandwidth capacity will provide Verizon the ability to continue to meet FiOS customers' needs by offering more bandwidth to support services such as 3DTV, ultra HDTV, multiplayer gaming and HD video conferencing," said Brian Whitton, executive director of Verizon's technology group.
The test involved bringing a new fiber connection from an existing operating GPON system at the company's Taunton call-switching office to a second optical network terminal (ONT) located at the business customer's facility. The second ONT was provisioned for the new 1 Gbps service tier, and the speed was tested to a local speed test server over an optimized route, as well as across the public Internet to a regional speed test server located more than 400 miles away.
The throughput speeds were measured at 925 Mbps (megabits per second) to a local server and more than 800 Mbps to the regional test speed servers. The customer's existing FiOS service was left in place, and showed no degradation in the voice, data or video services during this trial.
"This trial demonstrated that the current architecture has sufficient headroom to allow for a progressive increase in capacity as needed by our residential and business customers on our current GPON platform, and validates our decision to support both residential and business services on the same platform," said Vincent O'Byrne, director of Verizon's technology organization, who managed the trial.

Winning the Fight Against Man-in-the-Browser - Entrust IdentityGuard Mobile Now Available
New mobile authentication application another of Entrust's proven methods for helping thwart man-in-the-browser malware attacks
DALLAS, Aug. 16 -- In April 2010, Entrust, Inc., announced the newest innovation in strong authentication technology - Entrust IdentityGuard Mobile. The advanced mobile authentication application is a component of a layered security approach to thwart malicious man-in-the-browser malware attacks - like the nefarious Zeus Trojan - and is now available as part of the newest release of Entrust IdentityGuard 9.3.
"To effectively fight the increasingly sophisticated strands of malware, including man-in-the-browser attacks, financial institutions should use a layered approach powered by proven identity-based security solutions," said TowerGroup senior research director George Tubin. "In addition to successful strong authentication and fraud detection methods, out-of-band transaction verification via a mobile application can prove effective in helping defeat man-in-the-browser attacks."
Going Mobile
Establishing itself as a leader in identity-based security strategies and solutions, Entrust and the innovative mobile identity application allows organizations to strongly authenticate customers, partners, vendors or users via a smartphone device. Whether for consumer, government or enterprise environments, Entrust IdentityGuard Mobile represents an extremely cost-effective and secure approach for authenticating any end-user.
Leveraging deployed smartphones and without requiring any specialized hardware, Entrust IdentityGuard Mobile delivers unique security capabilities for organizations, including out-of-band transaction verification, to defeat the latest malware threats affecting online-banking users.
"This is a critical tool in the fight against online fraud, particularly man-in-the-browser malware like Zeus that have, unfortunately, been successful defrauding large and small organizations alike," said Entrust President and CEO Bill Conner. "Coupled with a versatile authentication platform and fraud-monitoring capabilities, secure mobile applications can help consumers and financial institutions defend against these malicious malware attacks."
Defeating Man-in-the-Browser
Entrust IdentityGuard Mobile works in conjunction with Entrust's proven authentication and fraud detection solution - a strategy that is recognized by leading analyst firms for its ability to stop man-in-the-browser malware.(1) The mobile security platform enables strong authentication, as well as detailed transaction review and confirmation, on the handheld device. The application then generates standards-based, one-time passcodes (OTP) based on the values of the transaction itself.
"A mobile security application that provides strong authentication and out-of-band transaction verification is undeniably critical for customers in the fight against today's malware threats," said Neosecure S.A. CEO Eduardo Diaz. "Having this tool as a component of a larger versatile authentication platform - and right on their smartphone - only increases its value to organizations seeking solutions that will help protect their customers from online attacks."
In fact, Entrust is one of the only vendors that offers three distinct and highly effective methods of addressing man-in-the-browser attacks - behavioral and transactional fraud detection; SMS authentication with transaction details; and mobile out-of-band transaction verification and signature.
Easy to Use
One of the most convenient, easy-to-use strong mobile authentication methods available today, Entrust IdentityGuard Mobile enables out-of-band transaction verification, OATH-compliant signatures and even a method to immediately report suspicious account behavior. It is designed to operate on today's leading smartphone platforms, including the Apple iPhone, RIM BlackBerry, Microsoft Windows Mobile and Symbian (Java).
Affordable Authentication
Unlike physical options, Entrust IdentityGuard Mobile leverages a user's existing smartphone; there's no extra physical hardware to buy and deploy. In addition, Entrust IdentityGuard Mobile delivers transaction notifications directly to the phone without the use of SMS, which can reduce the overall cost of deployment for organizations.
Securing the Enterprise
And while Entrust IdentityGuard Mobile is proven to authenticate identities and transactions in the external world of consumer and business transactions, it's equally effective as a strong authenticator for internal enterprise VPN access, web portal access or corporate desktop security. The smartphone application can manage multiple identities on a single device, making it one of the most versatile and easy-to-use soft tokens available on the market today.
Popular Authenticators, One Platform
Entrust enables organizations to layer security - according to access requirements or the risk of a given transaction - across diverse users and applications. Entrust's authentication capabilities include username and password, IP-geolocation, device, questions and answers, out-of-band one-time passcode (delivered via voice, SMS or e-mail), grid and eGrid cards, digital certificates (in software or on smart cards/USB Tokens) and a range of one-time-passcode tokens, including Entrust IdentityGuard Mobile.

Cable Operators Exploit Mobile Internet Explosion with New High-Speed Outdoor Smart Wi-Fi System from Ruckus Wireless
First Strand-Mounted 802.11n Wi-Fi Access Points with Dynamic Beamforming and Interference Avoidance Deliver Unrivaled Range, Reliability and Performance for Community Wi-Fi
KEYSTONE, Colo., Aug. 16 -- CableLabs Summer Conference -- Ruckus Wireless(TM) today introduced the industry's first outdoor, strand-mounted 802.11n Smart Wi-Fi access point, the ZoneFlex(TM) 7761-CM, designed specifically to help cable operators rapidly deploy and monetize broadband wireless services into new and existing markets.
Rushing to meet explosive subscriber demand for seamless broadband access driven by millions of new Wi-Fi-enabled handheld devices flooding the market, multisystem cable operators (MSOs) are looking to exploit leading edge technology, taking advantage of customer, network, and service assets in place to offer selective Wi-Fi coverage. With the ZoneFlex 7761-CM, these assets can be exploited to quickly extend branded broadband access, maintain subscriber "stickiness," and attract prospective subscribers with new multimedia services.
The application of Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi outdoors with the new ZoneFlex 7761-CM now gives MSOs flexible service options such as reliable community Wi-Fi, IP-based video applications, multimedia hotspots, extended wireless LAN (WLAN) services and 3G data offloading. Ruckus Smart Wi-Fi technology brings essential interference rejection capabilities to the strand-mount application, delivering unrivaled performance in the unlicensed bands.
Plant-powered, the ZoneFlex 7761-CM delivers high bandwidth broadband services from outdoors to extend managed WLANs for strand-mounted locations where Ethernet cabling is not feasible. MSOs are aggressively using smarter Wi-Fi technology to address an increasingly mobile user base by extending the reach of their broadband services through the deployment of thousands of Wi-Fi access points in public locations such as parks, marinas, train stations, and other public venues.
With the ZoneFlex 7761-CM, MSOs can use their existing cable modem plant to backhaul traffic while offering reliable Wi-Fi access within the unlicensed band quickly and cost-effectively. The ZoneFlex 7761-CM allows MSOs to avoid costly spectrum licenses and data backhaul costs that have crippled the broadband mobile business case.
"Using the existing cable strand infrastructure to deliver reliable Wi-Fi access makes perfect sense and is a major focus for almost every cable operator in the United States," said Selina Lo, president and CEO of Ruckus Wireless. "What's changed over the last two years is the arrival of 802.11n, the debut of DOCSIS 3.0 and the introduction of smart antenna array technology. Combining these innovations gives cable companies the power to capitalize on and more quickly exploit the mobile Internet phenomenon."
Lo noted that the cost structure of using smarter Wi-Fi is dramatically lower than the cost per bit of providing broadband access using wide area approaches such as WiMAX, licensed spectrum or 3G services. "While MSOs will invest in different solutions, including licensed spectrum, backhaul and emerging technologies such as femto and picocells, Wi-Fi represents one of the best compliments and most cost effective strategies to augment existing network assets. Up to now, Wi-Fi's reliability within the unlicensed band has kept cable operators away from the technology. Our breakthroughs in automatic RF signal control have helped solve these problems and have propelled Ruckus into a leadership position within the service provider market."
New WLAN research from DellOro Group, a leading industry analysis company, shows Ruckus Wireless as the worldwide leader in unit shipments of Wi-Fi mesh access points to service providers, garnering 41 percent of the market in the fourth quarter of 2009 and 57 percent in the first quarter of 2010.
Higher Speed, More Reliable Outdoor Wi-Fi with the ZoneFlex 7761-CM
Currently in trials with national cable operators, the ZoneFlex 7761-CM is a first-of-its kind device to combine a standard DOCSIS 3.0 modem with dual-band 802.11n and Ruckus-patented smart antenna technology that supports dynamic beamforming for unprecedented range and reliability.
Purpose built within a ruggedized outdoor enclosure for harsh environmental conditions, the ZoneFlex 7761-CM comes in a lightweight (under 15 lbs.) form factor, is dynamically self optimizing and remotely managed - seamlessly integrating with existing MSO infrastructure and network operation center management applications.
"Cable operators are ready to expand their role in mobile broadband and high speed Internet access outside the home, as new applications like mobile video chat and multimedia content uploads demand higher performance than is available on most 3G networks," observed Berge Ayvazian, Senior Consultant with Heavy Reading. "These increasingly popular, bandwidth intensive applications demand peak wireless network performance and quality of service to support the resulting traffic."
Unlike competitive alternatives, ZoneFlex 7761-CM integrates sophisticated intelligent antenna array technology and expert control software, called BeamFlex(TM), to form and direct Wi-Fi signals over the best performing paths to ensure consistent performance at longer ranges. With BeamFlex, the ZoneFlex 7761-CM constantly steers Wi-Fi transmissions around obstacles and interference that degrade client performance, thereby providing clients with more stable and higher speed connections. Other advanced features include:
-- Patented IP-multicast-to unicast conversion for streaming video
applications,
-- Bandsteering and airtime fairness with dynamic beamforming to ensure
optimal spectrum utilization for high-density client environments,
-- Remote management and flexible tunneling options for unprecedented
security and control, and
-- Wireless meshing for resilience in the event of temporary network
interruptions.
With an integrated DOCSIS 3.0 modem that touts an 8x4 chipset, the ZoneFlex 7761-CM supports eight downstream and four upstream bonded channels delivering speeds of up to 320 Mbps. With concurrent, dual-band 802.11n, the ZoneFlex 7761-CM supports a maximum concurrent theoretical (PHY) wireless data rates of up to 600 Mbps.
Massively scalable management allows the ZoneFlex 7761-CM to be easily managed through the Ruckus FlexMaster system, a carrier-class Wi-Fi management platform. The ZoneFlex 7761-CM also provides an easy-to-use graphical user interface and supports SNMP management. Northbound APIs allow for seamless management integration of the ZoneFlex 7761-CM with operator OSS/BSS systems.
The ZoneFlex 7761-CM supports 3X3 MIMO operation within the 2.4/5GHz bands and provides reliable and adaptive wireless mesh backhaul support when strand mounting is not feasible. With 16 SSIDs configurable per device, the ZoneFlex 7761-CM provides many advanced options to support high density and high bandwidth installations, including: advanced quality of service mechanisms such as airtime fairness, band steering, per user threshold limits along with the ability to automatically classify, queue and schedule voice, video and data traffic using sophisticated heuristics. Flexible forwarding options provide for local breakout of traffic and different tunneling methods
The ZoneFlex 7761-CM is available immediate upon request for testing by MSOs.

PhoneTell Builds 'Impossible-to-Find' Phone Numbers Into Its Free Mobile App for Android Phones
Now Reach Support Resources Instantly
MENLO PARK, Calif., Aug. 16 -- PhoneTell today announced that it has added hundreds of the most difficult, hard-to-find, buried-five-layers-deep and at the bottom of a web page in mouse-type numbers into its mobile application for Android phones. Anyone with an Android phone can download PhoneTell free from the Android market or GetJar starting today. Whether you've lost your luggage and need the 800# for the airline baggage claim or you're trying to locate the customer service number for Amazon.com, Apple, PayPal, Toyota, MasterCard or Dell, PhoneTell instantly provides you the precise phone number to reach a real live person to solve your problem.
Launched earlier this year at TechCrunch Disrupt, PhoneTell expands phone number search beyond your mobile phone address book, connecting you to your "personal cloud" of contacts in Gmail, LinkedIn or Salesforce.com, as well as contacts in the "public cloud" such as Yelp!, Yellow Pages, White Pages and Bing- all in one app. PhoneTell instantly scours these data sources and with its patent-pending algorithms, searches, verifies, de-dupes and delivers ranked search matches instantly to your phone. And as of today, it also includes hundreds of the most difficult to find customer support numbers.
"A lot of companies are going to be furious," said Chuck Martin, author of the upcoming book The Third Screen: Marketing to Your Customers in a World Gone Mobile. "Many businesses have built elaborate mazes of Web pages and countless hurdles preventing consumers from finding the phone number to reach an actual person live."
"PhoneTell has over 300 million phone numbers in our database--that's more than anyone else," said Steve Larsen, CEO, PhoneTell. "With the addition of these really hard-to-find numbers right on your mobile phone, we make it super fast and easy to reach just about anyone, anytime. We're the ultimate 411 for your phone - and we're free."
"I've said before that PhoneTell makes smartphones smarter," said Michael Boland, Analyst and Program Director for BIA/Kelsey. "This takes it to another level in an environment where companies intentionally bury customer service numbers to reduce CSR overhead. Surfacing them fills a need that we can all associate with."
The new list of additional phone numbers is comprised of hard-to-find customer service numbers (e.g. Direct TV, Disneyland Resort, the Geek Squad, PayPal), unlisted numbers and national 1-800 numbers. Will Pornography Rule Private Domains or Will Online Gaming Get its Own Domain as Well?
GIBRALTAR, August 16, 2010-- The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers has recently
granted the pornography industry with a domain dedicated solely to
pornographic sites. Analysts are wondering if the same thing will happen in
the online gambling industry as well.
Last week, ICANN assigned the pornography industry with a new suffix
specifically for pornographic sites. The grouping of adult oriented and sites
with sexual content under the domain of .xxx may indicate a similar future
for online gambling sites such as http://www.casino.com. The decision was
made in hopes that it would help users get better results when searching
online.
The decision stirred mixed feelings on both sides of the coin. Some porn
distributors were happy to welcome the concept while others felt that it put
a stigma on the porn industry by separating them from the rest of the online
community. In spite of this, online casino sites are considering the idea of
a unique domain as well, hoping that it will give them the same impact as
governments and schools by using .gov and .edu.

Walk Score® Launches Transit Score(TM) and Commute Reports
New tools help consumers understand their transportation options
SEATTLE, Aug. 16 -- When deciding where to live and work, not only do you want to know what amenities and services are nearby, you also want to understand your transportation options. How easily can you walk, bike or take the bus? How long will it take to get from point A to point B? And how much will it cost?
Today, Walk Score launched Transit Score, custom commute reports, and a home and transportation costs calculator empowering anyone to quickly understand the proximity of public transportation, their commuting options and associated costs. This work, funded in part by The Rockefeller Foundation, also enables third parties to easily add public transit information to their websites.
Consumers everywhere are looking to reduce the time and money spent driving.
-- Commuters waste 4.2 billion hours and 2.8 billion gallons of gas in
traffic per year. (Source: Texas Transportation Institute)
-- Households in traditional suburbs spend up to 32% of their income on
transportation costs, while households in walkable areas with greater
access to public transportation spend as little as 12%. (Source:
Center for Neighborhood Technology)
-- Neighborhood walkability and access to public transportation has been
linked to lower foreclosure rates. (Source: NRDC)
"The costs of driving to and from work and daily activities are only growing, and the time spent in traffic is lost forever," said Josh Herst, Walk Score CEO. "Walk Score's new Transit Score and commute reports make it easy for consumers to quickly understand how much the location of their home and workplace impacts their daily lives."
What's your Transit Score?
Transit Score provides a 0-100 rating indicating how well an address is served by public transportation. Ratings range from "Rider's Paradises" where multiple transit options are available within a quarter of a mile to areas with limited or no nearby public transportation.
The Transit Score rating is currently available in over 30 cities, including Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Washington D.C. For a list of cities where Transit Score is available, see http://www.walkscore.com/transit-score.php.
"The Rockefeller Foundation's transportation initiative is committed to helping Americans re-think our transportation future as a way to expand economic opportunity, and we are excited about the potential impact Transit Score will have in helping Americans make more informed decisions about where they will live and work," said Benjamin de la Pena, Associate Director at The Rockefeller Foundation. "Transportation costs are often the second highest expense for working Americans and Transit Score will give families more control over their household budgets by providing them with information about their transit choices."
What will your commute be like?
Walk Score now enables customers to type in an address and get a summary of commuting options, including the time it would take to get to your work, school or other location by car, bike and foot and lists nearby public transit stops and routes. The customized commute report also includes a visual representation of the hills between your home and work to better understand how bikable or walkable the route may be.
Walking, biking and driving directions are provided by Google Maps. Public transit information is available from over 100 public transit agencies that provide open access to their transit feeds. For a complete list see http://www.citygoround.org/.
Can you really afford this home?
For most families, transportation is the second largest household expense. Walk Score's new home and transportation costs calculator makes it easier for people to understand the true costs of owning or renting in a particular location. Based on a few simple pieces of information, the calculator generates an estimated monthly amount that includes housing and transportation costs.
"Transportation is often a hidden cost in deciding where to live. By integrating the Center for Neighborhood Technology's Housing + Transportation (H+T(SM)) Affordability Index with Walk Score, we are now making it easier for customers to understand whether a house is truly affordable," says Scott Bernstein, president and founder of CNT.
Transit Score on Your Site
Building on the success of the Walk Score API and Amenity Map currently used by over 4,000 websites, today Walk Score also launched the Public Transit API which enables Web developers to easily add public transportation information to their websites.
With the Public Transit API, real estate and other website owners can show nearby public transit stops on a map, show a text description of nearby transit stops and routes, and show the Transit Score of a specific location.
"Home buyers are increasingly searching for homes that offer 'green' benefits, and having public transit rated for each listing helps home shoppers make the right decision," says Myron Lo, Vice President of Innovation at ZipRealty. "We are committed to staying ahead of the curve by introducing new features, such as Transit Score, that help our clients make smart and informed home purchase decisions."
About Walk Score: Walk Score is the flagship product of Front Seat, a civic software company based in Seattle, WA. Walk Score rates any address based on its proximity to nearby amenities (grocery stores, restaurants, schools, public transit, etc.) and promotes walkable neighborhoods for their economic, environmental and health benefits. Walk Score delivers three million scores per day across a network of over 4,000 websites. According to independent research conducted by CEOs for Cities, one point of Walk Score is worth as much as $3,000 in home value. Visit http://www.walkscore.com for more information.

DURANGO, Colo., Aug. 13 -- We are living in an information age--and always-on, instant communication is a necessity for doing business. To work efficiently with customers and business partners, organizations must provide their employees with information where and when they need it. So businesses must maintain an online presence that offers 24/7 access to information for both clients and employees.
Due to the increasing popularity of mobile technologies, like smart phones and laptops, organizations are allowing employees to enjoy more flexible working practices. Unfortunately, these technologies allow easier access to information for hackers, as well. In recent years, hackers have become more financially motivated, and their attacks, including the use of viruses and spyware, are increasing in sophistication. Webroot commissioned research takes a look at the facts:
-- Preferred method: The internet and web-based applications are hackers'
preferred method of attack.
-- Threat rising: More than half of respondents to a 2009 survey cited a
50% increase in malware attacks from 2008.
-- Increased vulnerability: The frequent use of web-based applications in
the workplace, such as collaboration tools and social networks, means
increased vulnerability to virus and spyware attacks.
-- Sophisticated practices: As users become adept at avoiding malware,
hackers become more sophisticated in their attacks.
Traditionally, businesses have used antivirus software installed on individual devices to combat security threats. Already challenged IT departments must constantly update the software, an expensive and time-consuming process, made even more challenging when protecting workers in geographically distributed offices. Considering the increasingly sophisticated attempts that can bypass traditional defenses, it's time for companies to consider web-based technologies to ensure internet security.
One of the most promising developments in web-based technology is the option of accessing web security as a service in the cloud. Cloud computing is a model for enabling network access to your shared pool of resources, such as networks, servers, storage, applications, and services. Using cloud-based security, you can apply protection directly where the threats are being targeted--at internet applications. Benefits of a cloud-based solution include:
-- Reduced risk of exposure to security attacks
-- Improved data security and regulatory compliance capabilities
-- Ability to cut the costs of procuring and managing the technology
What should your business look for in a cloud-based service? The service should stop viruses and other malware from reaching your organization, and should protect against phishing attacks and data loss. To prevent any other web-based threats from reaching your network, it should filter out malicious websites as well. To enforce your internet use policies, it must be capable of identifying users and authenticating them against permissions set in corporate directories. Your web-based service package should include:
-- Anti-virus, anti-spyware and phishing controls
-- Web content and URL filtering
-- Acceptable use policies
-- Ability to scale as required
Using cloud-based web security service to battle the web-based threats we face today is a smart solution for businesses large and small, offering many advantages over on-premise security solutions.
