Verizon Wireless Enhances 3G Data Network Capacity in Kansas City
KANSAS CITY, Mo., Aug. 12 -- Verizon Wireless today announced it has upgraded equipment on 98 of its existing cell sites in the Kansas City area, increasing 3G data capacity throughout the metro area.
The cell site upgrades enable more customers to use their wireless phones and air cards to concurrently make calls and initiate data connections; send and receive email, picture and video messages; download music, games and ringtones; view high-quality videos and browse the Internet.
"We stay well ahead of our customers' growing needs by studying their data usage habits and test driving our network to experience firsthand the speeds and quality of our 3G network," said Brendan Fallis, president-Kansas/Missouri Region, Verizon Wireless. State Legislators Oppose FCC's Plans to Re-label and Regulate Internet
WASHINGTON, Aug. 12 -- The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) voices its opposition to plans by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to change the status of broadband Internet Service from a lightly-regulated "information service" to a more heavily regulated "telecommunications service."
At its meeting late last week, ALEC's Telecommunications & Information Technology Task Force approved its ALEC Broadband Regulation Resolution. The Resolution declares ALEC's opposition to the FCC's controversial plan to subject broadband Internet service to a handful of older monopoly-era telephone regulations.
Today the Resolution was delivered to the FCC along with a letter by Connecticut State Representative Bill Hamzy, who serves as Public Sector Chair of ALEC's Telecom & IT Task Force. In the letter, the state legislator insists the agency should back off from its controversial plan to subject broadband Internet to heavier regulatory burdens.
"ALEC supports the continuation of federal policies that have kept the Internet free from government regulation. Marketplace freedom has encouraged the explosive growth of the Internet and e-commerce in recent years. It would be a grave mistake for the FCC to suddenly reverse course and saddle the Internet with burdensome new regulation. ALEC remains concerned that attempts by federal regulators to impose new restrictions on broadband Internet service will hurt technological innovation, deter private infrastructure investment, and threaten job growth in the states," said Representative Hamzy.
As declared in the Resolution, "ALEC urges that the FCC, Congress and state regulatory and legislative bodies refocus their efforts on specific and limited initiatives targeted at ensuring that broadband service is made universally available and affordable to consumers, rejecting overly prescriptive regulations that would harm innovation, investment, and job growth."

Delta Launches First Airline Social Media 'Ticket Window,' Revamps Home Page

ATLANTA, Aug. 12 -- Delta Air Lines (NYSE:DAL) today launched the industry's first social media 'Ticket Window' enabling bookings directly from its Facebook page and other social media sites. The Delta Ticket Window, along with a newly designed home page at delta.com introduced earlier this week, offers the first visual cues of the airline's planned transformation in customer-facing technology.
"Our customers are spending more time online and are looking for new ways to connect with us. We're now delivering technology where our customers are - from our own website to our Facebook page to Internet news sites and beyond," said Bob Kupbens, Delta's vice president - eCommerce. "We already know Facebook is the most used website by inflight WiFi users on more than 2,000 Delta flights every day, giving us the natural launching point for a new online Ticket Window."
Delta's Ticket Window allows any of Facebook's 500 million users to complete a full travel booking using a dedicated "tab" at facebook.com/delta without navigating to delta.com. Delta plans to expand its Ticket Window to other sites, including online banner ads to allow full booking capabilities within the airline's advertisements.
The redesign of Delta's home page is the first step toward a larger redesign which will continue to improve the online experience on delta.com and its affiliated technology, including airport kiosks, to offer more functionality to customers. The immediate home page changes include easier access to flight booking, status updates, online check-in and SkyMiles account information.
Earlier this month Delta enhanced its smartphone site and will continue to deliver other popular consumer applications. The new application for the iPhone and iPod touch provides users with instant access to 32,000 works of art in the Museum's vast collection of modern and contemporary art; a dictionary of art terms and a database of artist bios; calendar information for exhibitions, film screenings, and events; and a variety of audio tours, including special tours for children, teens, and the visually impaired. As a useful companion for visits to the Museum, the MoMA App offers users a chance to snap photos inside the Museum and send them as postcards, and allows visitors to select tracks from their own music libraries to listen to while touring the Museum. The application's highly engaging visual interface was designed in-house, and when used with the new iPhone 4G and its high resolution and retina display, artworks can be viewed in the highest possible quality. Tim Kring and Nokia Push Boundaries of Mobile Entertainment With Conspiracy For Good
Unique Social Benefit Entertainment Experience Successfully Captures Public Imagination to Establish Scholarships, Five Libraries in Africa
ESPOO, Finland, August 12, 2010-- Heroes creator Tim Kring and the Ovi by Nokia-powered (NYSE:NOK) new
social benefit entertainment pilot, Conspiracy For Good(TM) (CFG, http://www.conspiracyforgood.com/), concluded successfully this past weekend
with more than half a million downloads of CFG casual games and apps from
Nokia's Ovi Store, over 4,000 dedicated members joining the global movement
online, enthusiastic attendance at the four live events in London, and huge
support recorded from partner charities.
"The Conspiracy For Good has been two years in the making with Nokia,"
said Tim Kring, 2010 International Digital Emmy(R) Pioneer Award winner for
transmedia storytelling. "We had a team of more than 130 experts working
behind the scenes in five countries across three continents making sure that
this was the best entertainment experience possible and to ensure the charity
causes were the true heroes of this immersive story."
Partnerships with charities for CFG were uniquely interwoven into the
narrative, taking actual roles within the story and creating a new way to
reach potential supporters of their respective causes. The new approach
created unprecedented interaction with the CFG communities and will result in
50 scholarships being provided for young women in Africa as well as the
establishment of five children's libraries in Zambia in association with Room
to Read. These libraries will be stocked with more than 10,000 donated books
in association with the Pearson Foundation. These highlights join many other
worthy causes that were supported by the CFG movement.
The first of its kind, this project used the extensive reach of Nokia's
Ovi platform with online and physical participants joining CFG from more than
165 countries and enjoying a variety of Ovi content, apps and services.
"This is the most comprehensive Ovi offering to date, integrating almost
every service to help advance the story," said Tero Ojanpera, executive vice
president, Nokia. "A specially developed app using Nokia's Point & Find,
called Conspiracy For Good: DeadDrop, created a new dimension for augmented

CFG is at the forefront of a new transmedia entertainment movement in
which the storyline played itself out across multiple platforms. Participants
became part of the story and found tools and clues to move the narrative
forward both in the online and real worlds by using music, apps, mobile
games, alternate reality gaming (ARG), live events, and interactive theatre
that was produced in association with International Digital Emmy(R)
award-winning production company, The company P.
The Conspiracy For Good pilot titled "Read the Signs" focused on literacy
as the social cause. The fictional narrative followed the actions of a
schoolteacher, Nadirah X, CFG spokesperson Ann Marie Calhoun, and the
underground resistance movement, Spira. The movement, which dates to the 2nd
century, recruited members of the public to help Nadirah X and Ann Marie in
their task to bring down evil corporation Blackwell Briggs before it could
install an oil pipeline and destroy a Zambian school and library. Online and
real-world game play also raised awareness and generated donations for
partner charities including Kids Company, Doctors of the World, READ
International, Room to Read and the Pearson Foundation who partnered with
Nokia to provide resources to schoolgirls in Chataika village in Zambia.

S-8363 Series Super Small Package Step-Up PWM/PFM Regulator Released
NEU ISENBURG, Germany, August 12, 2010-- Seiko Instruments officially released a new Step-Up DC-DC converter IC
Series S-8363 that is unique in a number of ways. It is available in SOT-23-6
and tiny SNT-6A package which measures mere 1.6mm x 1.8mm x 0.5mm, enabling
tight designs of small portable equipment. It incorporates a N-ch power MOS
FET with ON resistance of only 0.25 Ohm, permitting output current of 300mA
(@ VIN = 1.8V, VOUT = 3.3V). The input voltage range from 0.9V to 4.5V makes
it suitable for use with single or double cell dry batteries or with Li-Ion
batteries. The output voltage can be set between 1.8V and 5.0V. The switching
frequency is 1.2 MHz and the change over from PFM to PWM is set to 13%
typical. Operation is in PWM under heavy load with duty cycles up to 88%
(plus or minus6%) and in PFM under moderate to small load. The switching
regulator employs a soft start function over typical 1.2ms. An intelligent
STU-Mode Circuit supports the step-up of the output voltage for a given
Start-Up period with a fixed duty cycle; it is shut down during operation for
power saving. Current consumption is very dependent on the operating modus
and load; it is typ. 95 microA during switching stop and 3.0 microA with
power off pin set to OFF. Efficiency is 85%. The control circuit permits the
use of low ESR ceramic capacitors at the output. The IC contains an
over-current detection circuit to protect coil and switching regulator.
