In A Television Network First, SHOWTIME Teams Up With SCVNGR To Design An Interactive Mobile Experience
NEW YORK, July 15 -- As part of a multi-tiered programming, digital and marketing campaign custom-designed for the 2010 San Diego Comic-Con, SHOWTIME announced the launch of DEXTER GAME ON (DexterGameOn.com), an interactive promotional game that will take place simultaneously at San Diego Comic-Con and in five other major cities across the U.S. from Wednesday, July 21 to Sunday, July 25. SHOWTIME has worked with SCVNGR - an iPhone and Android-based application that is all about going places, doing challenges and earning points - to build DEXTER(TM)-themed challenges for the game. The collaboration marks the first time that a television network has teamed up with SCVNGR.
Players of DEXTER GAME ON are asked to step into Dexter's mind to unlock exclusive content from the series' upcoming fifth season and for a chance to pick up DEXTER-themed merchandise, including season four DVDs. Devoted fans of the series know that all of Dexter's victims are marked with a small incision on their right cheek, and at Comic-Con, those fans can show their love for the series by sporting a DEXTER "cheek slash" tattoo. SHOWTIME will hand out over 100,000 lick-'n-stick tattoos during all four days of Comic-Con. Tattoos will be available throughout the convention floor, at the SHOWTIME booth (#4129), and will be distributed by street teams outside the convention center.
Fans are encouraged to take pictures of themselves sporting their tattoos at various locations around the convention and upload them to the DEXTER GAME ON site (DexterGameOn.com). At Comic-Con, players will explore San Diego through the check-in-based DEXTER-themed Trek on SCVNGR (scvngr.com) - venues will range from the SHOWTIME booth, to an innocent coffee shop nearby, and will culminate in a "crime scene" location to be revealed near the convention center. As gamers complete the trek, they will have the opportunity to earn limited edition SCVNGR badges that can be redeemed for DEXTER merchandise, including the early release of 250 copies of the DEXTER season four DVD.
Fans that are unable to join SHOWTIME at Comic-Con can actively play in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle and Atlanta with SCVNGR treks custom designed locally for their area. SHOWTIME has also created a new "cheek-slash-yourself" Facebook application, where fans can upload tattoos directly to their online profile photos on Facebook. Fans playing DEXTER GAME ON across the country will work as a hive - each challenge completed at Comic-Con, in the five participating cities, and via Facebook gets tallied on the official counter on DexterGameOn.com. Once the DEXTER community amasses 100,000 completed challenges, a never-before-seen sneak peek of the series' upcoming fifth season will be unlocked and available for all fans to see.

IBM Introduces New Security Appliance to Help Organizations Stay Ahead of Threats
New platform helps deliver proactive network security
ARMONK, N.Y., July 15 -- As today's threat landscape continues to evolve and become more complex, IBM (NYSE:IBM) is introducing a new security appliance to help clients more easily adopt an IT infrastructure that is secure by design and enable them to stay ahead of looming network security risks.
Businesses today are facing a growing number of external security challenges, such as targeted attacks, worms, bots, intrusion attempts and phishing scams. The average company's IT infrastructure is attacked 60,000 times per day.(1) Network threats target vulnerabilities in systems, workstations and applications and can have a crippling financial effect, disrupting business processes and causing loss of confidential and proprietary information.
Recognizing these increasing threats, IBM is introducing a new security network intrusion prevention system (IPS) that consolidates intrusion prevention with data and web application security into a single, optimized appliance for faster, more accurate security protection. The hardware appliance comes preloaded and preconfigured with IBM security software and extends the capabilities of the IBM X-Force research team to deliver high-performance network security at lower costs.
Unlike certain competitive solutions, the new IBM Security Network Intrusion Prevention System helps organizations take a more holistic approach to security, eliminating the need for multiple point solutions. Through a unified platform, clients can manage a variety of network security capabilities, such as automated Virtual Patch technology that can sense and block network threats, client-side application protection, data security, web application protection and application control. Emergency patching of security flaws requires unscheduled system downtime and can leave enterprises vulnerable until every system, workstation and application is patched. Despite the critical nature of these vulnerabilities that open the door to attacks, the 2009 IBM X-Force Trend and Risk Report reported that 52 percent of vulnerabilities had no vendor-supplied patch by year's end.
For example, more than two years before the well publicized Conficker threat was discovered, IBM X-Force research identified the potential risk to enterprises from this type of threat and issued Virtual Patch protection, giving clients preemptive protection of their systems and workstations. For the top 61 security threats in 2009, IBM X-Force delivered the necessary protection an average of 340 days before the vulnerability was publicly disclosed.(2)
The new solution is built upon Virtual Patch technology and powered by IBM X-Force research, giving customers direct access to the latest security updates they need to block threats even before the vendor-supplied patches are applied.

Pyramid Research projects that 2010 will be another tough year for operators in Taiwan. "In January 2010, regulator NCC mandated that Taiwan's operators must cut their fixed monthly rents by 5.686 percent and their mobile 2G and 3G services by 5.87 percent, all in an effort to provide some reprieve to consumers badly hit by the economic crisis of 2009," notes Daniel Yu, analyst at Pyramid Research and author of the report. "Regulators expect consumers to recognize savings of more than $100 million per year as a result of these rate cuts, a significant hit to Taiwan's service providers," he explains.
The rate cut, combined with significant competition among a large number of players, means that operators are increasing their focus on value-added services including mobile data, mobile content, broadband access, and applications, among others. "We expect mobile broadband to grow at a CAGR of 15 percent between 2010 and 2015, reaching $352 million in revenue at the end of the forecast period," says Yu. "Migration to fiber, high-speed 20-Mbit/s+ connections, IPTV, and HD will fuel fixed broadband growth over the next five years, enabling the market to generate $1.8 billion by 2015."

STMicroelectronics Enables Even More Interactive Portables with New Microphone Interface Chip
Complete microphone interface on a miniature chip supports diverse audio-enabled applications
GENEVA, July 15 -- As demand continues to grow for smaller dimensions and extra functions in mobile devices such as smartphones and other portable devices, a new integrated circuit (IC) from STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM), a world leader in protection and filtering devices, reduces the total space required to embed microphones for a variety of functions.
Consumer-electronic applications requiring a microphone are increasing, as users expect to use their PCs for voice calls, use voice commands to control devices such as GPS receivers and automotive systems, and record audio directly onto portable media devices. In addition, mobile devices such as cellphones that have traditionally featured one microphone are now adding extra microphones to support active noise cancellation for improved user experience.
Although demand for embedded microphones is increasing, little extra space - if any - is available inside the enclosure. Designers need solutions that make the microphone smaller and allow the essential interface circuitry to be mounted on the printed circuit board. ST's EMIF02-MIC07F3 is a next-generation device integrating the complete noise filtering, ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection and biasing for one microphone in a single IC occupying only 1.37mm2. The single chip replaces multiple discrete components that consume at least 20.8mm2.
The EMIF02-MIC07F3 also enhances performance by using ST's advanced PZT (Lead Zirconium Titanate) process, which allows high capacitance values within ultra-miniature dimensions. This gives designers extra freedom to optimize the filter characteristics. In addition, as all of the interface components are fabricated on a single chip, close matching between the capacitor and resistor values produces more repeatable performance than is possible with discrete components. This enhances the quality of the end product.
