Ten Privacy and Consumer Groups Ask Congressional Leaders to Strengthen Privacy Bill
House Subcommittee Urged to Expand Definition of "Sensitive Information," Incorporate "Fair Information Practices," and Require "Opt-in" Procedures for Data Collection
WASHINGTON, June 7 -- In response to a discussion draft of a new privacy bill currently under consideration by the House Subcommittee on Communications, Technology and the Internet, ten leading privacy and consumer organizations today called for much stronger provisions to protect consumer privacy both online and off.
The groups, including the Consumer Federation of America, Electronic Frontier Foundation, Consumer Watchdog, World Privacy Forum, Consumer Action, USPIRG, Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, Privacy Times, Privacy Lives, and the Center for Digital Democracy, raised their concerns in a letter to Subcommittee Chairman Rick Boucher and Ranking Member Cliff Stearns.
Recognizing that "consumers increasingly rely on the Internet and other digital services for a wide range of transactions and services, many of which involve their most sensitive affairs, including health, financial, and other personal matters," the groups' letter made a number of recommendations for strengthening the draft privacy bill, including the following items:
-- The bill should incorporate the Fair Information Practice Principles
that have long served as the bedrock of consumer privacy protection in
the U.S., including the principle of not collecting more data than is
necessary for the stated purposes, limits on how long data should be
retained, and a right to access and correct one's data.
-- The bill's definitions of what constitutes "sensitive information"
need to be expanded; for instance, to include health-related
information beyond just "medical records."
-- The bill should require strict "opt-in" procedures for the collection
and use of covered data and should prohibit the collection and use of
any sensitive information except for the transactions for which
consumers provided it.
"We are committed to working with you to achieve real privacy protection for consumers," the letter concluded.
"Consumers online are being stealthily tracked, profiled and targeted by marketers -- who are able to obtain personal information regarding their finances, health, ethnicity, and their families," said Jeff Chester, Executive Director of the Center for Digital Democracy. "The public should not be placed at risk as they grow to rely on the Internet and mobile phones when making purchases and searching for information. Reps. Boucher and Stearns have launched an important debate that must lead to real privacy safeguards for consumers. Both political parties should work together to revise this proposal and enact landmark 21st Century consumer protection legislation."
"The draft bill has served to launch the debate," said John M. Simpson, a consumer advocate with Consumer Watchdog, "but substantial revisions are necessary to provide meaningful privacy protection for consumers. In its present form the bill would lock in a bankrupt 'notice and choice' model and offer few real protections. Enacting no legislation would be better than passing this flawed bill in its current form."
"Consumers need strong privacy legislation that sets the default switch on tracking consumers or selling or sharing their information to OFF, and gives consumers real control of their personal data," said Ed Mierzwinski, Consumer Program Director of USPIRG. "If a Congressional proposal doesn't protect consumers, and isn't based on all the Fair Information Practices, but only on some limited, industry-approved 'here's our take-it-or-leave-it list,' then make no mistake, we will oppose it."
"We're tired of companies paying lip-service to privacy but using consumers' personal information for whatever they want, without giving consumers any meaningful control," said Susan Grant, Director of Consumer Protection at Consumer Federation of America. "We need a law that forces companies to build respect for privacy into their business models, and we believe that they will ultimately benefit from increased consumer confidence."
"It has long been the goal of consumer and privacy advocates to see meaningful privacy protection legislation passed at the federal level, to protect consumers and to strengthen online commerce," said Linda Sherry, director of national priorities at Consumer Action. "But this draft, despite all the good intentions of House leaders, is full of holes -- not the least of which are that it would supersede even stronger state regulations and that it does not provide for a private right of action for aggrieved individuals."

Extending its virtualization infrastructure offerings, Trend Micro adds industry-first VDI-awareness to OfficeScan(TM) 10.5, enabling improved security, easier manageability, and lower costs for virtual and physical desktops
CUPERTINO, Calif., June 7 -- Trend Micro announced today the industry's first hypervisor "agnostic," virtualization-aware endpoint security offering: Trend Micro OfficeScan 10.5, the company's endpoint security solution for medium businesses and enterprises.
Trend Micro OfficeScan 10.5, powered by the Trend Micro(TM) Smart Protection Network(TM) infrastructure's correlated in-the-cloud intelligence, is now designed to solve the challenges unique to endpoints deployed in a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI). Based on internal testing, using OfficeScan enables enterprises to more than double the number of virtual machines per VDI host - without sacrificing security.
Growth of VDI leads to new security challenges
According to a recent study by the Enterprise Strategy Group, 60 percent of enterprises have a desktop virtualization strategy and 45 percent of them will have virtualized 50 percent of their desktops within the next three years.(1) But despite the smaller economic impact of cleaning or rebuilding infected virtual endpoints, most usage scenarios of virtual desktops have a risk profile nearly identical to that of physical desktops.
The temptation for enterprises is to deploy their existing non-virtualization-aware endpoint security to their virtualized endpoints. Doing so poses significant performance challenges on the shared VDI server hardware, leaving end users negatively impacted. In the end, enterprises are forced to choose between poor VDI Return on Investment (ROI) or poor security along with potential lack of regulatory compliance.
The VDI optimizations introduced in this new release of OfficeScan address these key challenges: Integrating with Citrix XenDesktop and VMware View, OfficeScan 10.5 identifies virtualized endpoints and prevents resource contention by serializing scan operations and security updates, avoiding so-called "AV-storms" and the "9:00-AM problem."
OfficeScan 10.5 enables customers to maximize the number of virtualized desktops per host, contributing to a higher ROI of a customer's VDI investment without lowering security standards. Additional optimizations leverage VDI provisioning concepts such as base images and linked clones to further reduce the performance impact of security on the VDI environment and support an improved user experience.
"With the upcoming release of OfficeScan with VDI-aware technology, Trend Micro reconfirms its commitment to and leadership in virtualization security," said Steve Quane, Chief Product Officer, Trend Micro. "With OfficeScan 10.5, customers can realize the full benefits of desktop virtualization. It also meets the new challenges our customers are facing and uniquely delivers comprehensive protection for both physical and virtual desktops from a single management console."
What's new in OfficeScan 10.5
-- NEW VDI-awareness compatible with Citrix XenDesktop and VMware View:
Conventional endpoint security solutions cause significant performance
overhead on shared VDI hardware resources, causing end-user
frustration and compelling enterprises to lower their security
standards. OfficeScan 10.5 prevents resource contention and optimizes
scan operations on virtualized desktops to maximize the number of VMs
per VDI host - whether the enterprise is using Citrix or VMware -
without sacrificing security or regulatory compliance.
-- NEW Windows® 7 optimized: OfficeScan 10.5 provides advanced,
cloud-powered endpoint protection that's compatible with Windows 7.
Its future-proof plug-in architecture and small footprint enables
enterprises to extend and make the most out of their Windows 7
investment.
-- NEW Local Web reputation: In this latest version of OfficeScan,
customers have the option to implement Web-reputation on a local,
customer network-based server, delivering even faster protection,
improving end users' Web-surfing experience, and saving money by
offloading the corporate Internet connection. Web reputation and file
reputation, both components of the Trend Micro Smart Protection
Network infrastructure, provide immediate, real-time protection
against the latest threats - so customers don't have to wait for the
next update. Independent testing from NSS Labs shows that Trend Micro
OfficeScan provides the #1 rated corporate endpoint protection.
-- Streamlined management and better scalability: OfficeScan 10.5 now
allows for more than 20,000 endpoints to be managed from one single
OfficeScan Management Server. This industry-first capability enables
Trend Micro customers to manage both their physical and virtual
desktops from a single management console. In addition, customers can
consolidate their OfficeScan installation and further streamline the
management of clients.
Supporting Quotes:
"Trend Micro OfficeScan has provided Dane County with superior endpoint protection, reliability and scalability. Now that we are considering a broader move into virtualization and VDI, we're pleased to know that we can explore these options with Trend Micro, a trusted vendor that is uniquely positioned to bring the benefits of its security portfolio into the virtualization environment," said Steven Jones, senior systems administrator, Government of Dane County, Wisconsin.
"Most of our customers currently have significant virtual desktop initiatives. When building these systems, they have often found that many of their traditional management and security tools either did not work at all, or changed the economics of virtual desktops by consuming undue resources. I'm glad to see that OfficeScan 10.5 is specifically engineered for this environment. My clients need every possible economic advantage without sacrificing system security and OfficeScan provides that," said Ken Phelan, CTO of Gotham Technology Group, Citrix's 2009 North America and Northeast Partner of the Year, and a VAR500 Award winner.

Intel and http://www.ipart.cn cooperate on brand new intelligent online romantic comedy 'iPartment'
BEIJING, June 7 -- Intel, a leading computer chip manufacturer and innovator worldwide, and http://www.ipart.cn/ , the largest female social networking community in China, today announced a strategic partnership for all of 2010. The cooperative effort involves http://www.ipart.cn, a well-known SNS social networking site, iPartment Season 1.5 special edition and iPartment Season 2. As part of the cross-sector marketing, the online romantic comedy iPartment Season 1.5 special edition will be broadcast on http://www.ipart.cn , http://video.sina.com.cn/ and IT portals at 14:00PM, June 7.
To optimize the outcome of the cross-sector marketing and multi-media promotion, the launch ceremony of the iPartment Season 1.5 special edition was held online, with journalists registering, participating, asking questions, and taking part in interactive sessions online. Sina Weibo users, http://www.ipart.cn members and TV series fans were also invited to take part in the online launch ceremony. Executives from Intel and http://www.ipart.cn, including Elaine Chang, General Manager, Marketing and Channel Group, Intel China, and Lin Dongqing, COO of http://www.ipart.cn, together with iPartment scriptwriter Wang Yuan and director Wei Zheng, also attended the ceremony. Intel and http://www.ipart.cn also announced their joint promotional activity targeting social networking sites as well as a series of marketing campaigns from Intel ZZDD outlets and http://intel.taobao.com/ .
The five-episode, 80 minute-long online romantic comedy iPartment Season 1.5 special edition made its debut today. The series will last five weeks with weekly updates after the first episode appears online. The characters in this online comedy deal with society's current hot-button issues. The program tells about the funny, romantic and embarrassing experiences of urban men and women -- whether they are successful businesspeople or young people who've just entered the workforce, tech whizzes constantly pursuing the latest technological developments in the age of the computer or slackers who spend all day on the internet -- and the stories about how they use their brains to find their true loves, and realize their dreams with the help of next-generation Intel Core intelligent computers, using intelligence to face the challenges of the world.
"In the modern life and work, everyone should make use of wisdom and intelligence to get through bad times and improve their quality of life. Intel's next-generation Core processor will lead us to an intelligent computer age for the first time, making intelligent computing as an essential part of our life and work a reality. This cooperation with iPartment aims to inform more users about how to build a wonderful and happy life through intelligent computers," said Elaine Chang.
"www.ipart.cn has been a pioneer in cross-sector interactions in the SNS industry. The website has worked together with movie productions, stars and actors, sponsored concerts and invested in and produced the TV series also called iPartment, which was well-received by audiences. The TV series iPartment funded and produced this time by http://www.ipart.cn is not only an urban comedy that will be well-received by modern audiences, but a realistic drama reflecting the lives and careers of people today. Every viewer can identify with a character in the story, and no matter what problems they face in their day-to-day lives, they can try out the problem-solving methods of characters from the story, face their fears and eliminate their worries," http://www.ipart.cn COO Lin Dongqing said.
Wang Yuan, scriptwriter of iPartment, expressed great interest in this cross-sector cooperation. He said that during the production process, the young director Mr. Wei Zheng held the production to much stricter standards than the previous "iPartment 1" and "iPartment 2," searching all over Shanghai for suitable actors and actresses. Wang Yuan also said that he believed that working together with the website to produce the series was a very interesting experience in cross-sector marketing. The series utilized a new-concept marketing method, through the combination of entertainment and interactive programming. Intel's cooperation on this online series signifies the highest level of cross-sector marketing.
In addition, Zhang also revealed that in addition to the online TV show "iPartment" that will go live in June, Intel will launch signature promotional activities in cooperation with the performers of the TV series at Intel ZZDD outlets in Shanghai, Wuxi, Chengdu and Guangzhou during the promotional period this summer, while interacting with users and promoting the TV show through social media networks such as http://www.ipart.cn and platforms including intel.taobao.com.
This series of innovation marketing approaches, which represents another wave of new cross-sector marketing activities spearheaded by Intel in 2010, have made use of the traditional TV media channels as well as a variety of Internet resources, including portals, vertical social media networks, video websites and IT portals. Throughout the whole experience, consumers will be invited to visit intel.taobao.com or ZZDD outlets, Intel's offline high-end computer stores. "We hope the integration of online and offline resources and cross-sector marketing models will spark an upsurge in the sales of new Core computers," said Zhang. "An understanding of consumer tastes and continued launch of new innovative marketing models are a reflection of Intel's 'Coping with Changes With Intelligence' marketing concept; more importantly, Intel strives to make it easy for consumers to experience the benefits technology brings to our lives."

OmniVision Launches Optimized, Quarter-Inch 5-Megapixel SOC Sensor for Mainstream Mobile Applications
OmniBSI(TM) Pixel Technology Brings High Quality Photography and HD Video to High-Volume Handset Markets
SANTA CLARA, Calif., June 7 -- OmniVision Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:OVTI), a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, today introduced a complete 5-megapixel system-on-a-chip (SOC) camera solution aimed at penetrating the high-volume autofocus (AF) camera phone market. Built on OmniVision's 1.4-micron OmniBSI(TM) backside illumination (BSI) technology, the new OV5640 is optimized to offer a cost-effective, complete camera solution with excellent pixel performance for 5-megapixel photography and 720p or 1080p high-definition (HD) video in camera phones.
Because the OV5640 is a single-chip SOC solution, it is easier to tune than two-chip solutions (RAW + external ISP), making it invaluable to customers in terms of cost, time-to-revenue and ease of platform integration. The sensor's embedded AF control with voice coil motor driver offers further cost savings to the end customer, making the OV5640 a highly attractive alternative to other 5-megapixel sensors currently on the market.
"Industry analysts predict that one-third of mobile phones will employ cameras with 5-megapixel resolution by 2012. Consequently, there is an increasing need for performance worthy of a 5-megapixel camera at cost levels that meet the requirements of the mainstream market," explained Vinoo Margasahayam, product marketing manager for OmniVision. "The OV5640 SOC sensor offers handset manufacturers a fully-featured yet extremely cost-effective solution for bringing excellent quality image capture and HD video to the mainstream handset market. Moreover, our OmniBSI technology differentiates itself from competing products by enabling best-in-class low-light sensitivity as well as an ultra compact camera module that is 8.5 x 8.5 mm with a z-height of less than 5 mm, a form factor which is required for today's ultra-thin handsets."
The OV5640 enables 720p HD video at 60 frames per second (fps) and 1080p HD video at 30 fps with complete user control over formatting and output data transfer. The 720p/60 HD video is captured in full field of view (FOV) with 2 x 2 binning, which doubles the sensitivity and improves the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Additionally, a unique post-binning re-sampling filter function removes zigzag artifacts around slant edges and minimizes spatial artifacts to deliver even sharper, crisper color images. To further improve camera performance and user experience, the OV5640 features an internal anti-shake engine for image stabilization.
The OV5640 offers a digital video port (DVP) parallel interface and a high-speed dual lane MIPI interface, supporting multiple output formats. An integrated JPEG compression engine simplifies data transfer for bandwidth-limited interfaces. The sensor's automatic image control functions include automatic exposure control (AEC), automatic white balance (AWB), automatic band filter (ABF), 50/60Hz automatic luminance detection, and automatic black level calibration (ABLC). The OV5640 delivers programmable controls for frame rate, AEC/AGC 16-zone size/position/weight control, mirror and flip, cropping, windowing, and panning. It also offers color saturation, hue, gamma, sharpness (edge enhancement), lens correction, defective pixel canceling, and noise canceling to improve image quality.
The OV5640 is available in CSP, RW and COB packaging options and is sampling now. It is expected to enter mass production in the second half of 2010.

SANYO Introduces Two Ultra Short-Focus 3D Ready Projectors
- Ultra short-focus projectors are 3D ready - 80-inch image projected from shortest throw distance available today of only 12.6 inches - Compact design reduces chassis size to half of conventional projectors - Can be installed with either vertical or horizontal orientation - PDG-DWL2500 has a wide native resolution (1280x800; 16:10 aspect ratio)
CHATSWORTH, Calif., June 7 -- SANYO North America Corporation (SANYO), subsidiary of SANYO Electric Co., Ltd., one of the world's largest manufacturers of LCD and DLP projectors, announces the introduction of two new ultra short-focus projectors with 3D capability. Both projectors feature compact chassis of about half the size of conventional short-focus projectors. The PDG-DWL2500 is WXGA resolution (1280x800; 16:10 aspect ratio) with 2,500 lumens of brightness, and the PDG-DXL2000 is XGA resolution (1024x768; 4:3 aspect ratio), producing 2,000 lumens. Scheduled for release in July 2010, the PDG-DWL2500 has an MSRP of $1995, and the PDG-DXL2000 has an MSRP of $1795. Both products will be displayed at InfoComm 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada, from June 9 to June 11, 2010.
Through a newly developed ultra short-focus mirror projection optical unit, both projectors operate at an extremely short distance from the display surface or screen. The PDG-DWL2500 creates an 80-inch image at a position only 12.6 inches from the screen, making it the shortest-throw unit on the market today. The PDG-DXL2000 requires only 15.1-inches for an 80-inch image. Both projectors offer a maximum image size of either 110 inches (DWL2500) or 90 inches (DXL2000).
Fully enabled for large screen display of 3D material, both projectors use the Frame Sequential Display Format to display 3D, which works in conjunction with Active Shutter 3D glasses to rapidly alternate display between the right and left eyes.
"These new ultra short-throw models open new venues to install projectors where it was not conceivable before," says Sam Malik, Vice President and General Manager of the Presentation Technologies Group in SANYO North America's Consumer Solutions Division. "With better optical engines allowing reduced size, coupled with our large widescreen image projection in 3D, we can provide unique solutions for even more current and future applications."
By using a new compact one-chip DLP optical engine and minimizing the size of the optical components as well as optimizing the physical layout, these projectors have been reduced in size to half the volume of conventional and previous generation SANYO models, making their installation footprint even smaller. They can be used in either a horizontal or vertical orientation, allowing placement under a table, on a table top behind a screen, or on a floor, ceiling or wall.
The 3D capability opens a new range of possibilities for applications in the education, digital signage and amusement markets. Venues where short-throw projection is the preferred or only option can now make presentations in 3D, including new possibilities such as 3D arcade gaming and rear projection museum exhibits.
The projectors include an onboard 10-watt audio amplifier and mono loudspeaker, with both stereo mini-jack and RCA stereo inputs for external audio sources. SANYO's Long-Life air filter reduces both maintenance frequency and overall cost. Useful for time-conscious presentations, a Presentation Timer function displays an optional elapsed time onscreen.
Reflecting SANYO's deep commitment to environmental responsibility, both projectors conform to the EuP-Directive Lot 6 for reduced energy consumption and the EU RoHS Directive for avoidance of the use of hazardous substances in electronic components. Further, their reduced chassis size minimizes resource and energy consumption in packing material and transportation.

Ziggy Marley Releases New Song 'Africa Land' to Celebrate the World Cup's Historic Africa Location
SINGLE TO BE OFFERED AS FREE DOWNLOAD THROUGHOUT CONTINENT STARTING JUNE 2nd TO COMMEMORATE UNPRECEDENTED EVENT
LOS ANGELES, June 7 -- Five-time Grammy winning artist and reggae icon Ziggy Marley, motivated by the historic occurrence of the World Cup being played in Africa for the first time, took the opportunity to write his current single "Africa Land." The song is an anthem to unity, freedom and new beginnings; well known principles championed by the legendary Marley family. "Africa Land" falls on the heels of Marley's 2009 Grammy-winning Children's album, "Family Time."
For this song, Marley recruited Grammy winning artists, brother Stephen Marley and African mega star Angelique Kidjo. Together they created a catchy, danceable song, which incorporates Dancehall Reggae, as well as African elements. Free Downloads will be available beginning June 1st at http://www.ziggymarley.com and http://www.tuffgongworldwide.com.
"The bible says 'the first shall be last and the last shall be first.' How fitting that South Africa - the last nation on the homeland to be free - is the launch pad for a global event that will showcase the rise of the African continent," said Ziggy Marley. "Africa Land is the song which celebrates that dream becoming true."
Marley plans to release "Africa Land" as an exclusive to African radio, to be followed worldwide as a free download shortly thereafter. "Africa Land" will be the first single from an upcoming collection of free singles entitled The Wild and Free Singles Marley is to release later this year.
Ziggy Marley's early immersion in music came at age ten when he sat in on recording sessions with his father. Then, as front man to Ziggy Marley and The Melody Makers, Marley released eight best-selling albums, generating three Grammys, with such chart-topping hits as "Tomorrow People" and "Tumbling Down." Marley's solo debut, Dragonfly, was released in 2003. His second solo release, Love Is My Religion, won a Grammy for Best Reggae Album to much critical acclaim in 2006. His third solo release, Family Time, scored him a Grammy in a new category: Best Musical Album For Children.

Artprice Becomes the 'Killer Application' for Apple's iPad in the Art World
PARIS, June 7, 2010-- Artprice, the world leader in art market information, has
launched a series of Apple's iPad(R) services (mostly pay-services) for its
1.3 million members and anyone who owns an iPad throughout the world.
According to Thierry Ehrmann, the founder and CEO of Artprice:
"the typical Artprice user relies heavily on our services and needs urgent
access to our data whilst on the move, for example, when the decision to buy
or sell an artwork cannot be postponed. Consequently, Artprice effectively
becomes the 'killer application' for iPad in the art market."
Artprice is one of the only content publishers in the world to
have successfully imposed, since 1987, the notion of paid contents, via it
status as global leader in the field. In this context, the conversion of
Artprice's clients to iPad in pay-for mode is completely natural compared
with other publishers whose clienteles have been addicted to free information
for many years.
As of the 3rd quarter of 2010, Artprice will enter into
specific partnerships with two major clients: the first is one of the largest
auctioneers in the world, and the second is one of the principal associations
of Fine Art valuers. Economically, the primary interest of these partnerships
is their revenue-generating capacity; however, they will also give Artprice
access to data feedback from professional clients that will be immediately
adjusted and implemented by Artprice's internal iPad marketing and IT teams.
In fact, the art market, essentially consisting of valuations and commercial
exchanges, has been nomadic by nature for many centuries. The iPad is so well
suited to the needs of the market that Artprice will soon be offering iPads
on-line, already loaded with subscriptions to Artprice data and a number of
very specific Artprice applications, giving preference to its existing
clients. Artprice Europe and Artprice Inc. in the USA have both launched a
first call for proposals for iPads in bulk.
Likewise, as of this June, a series of promotion campaigns
will allow Artprice's clients to spread the "iPad/Artprice addiction"
throughout the art world in complete harmony with the French Consumer Code.
At the same time, Artprice is developing new applications
using Google's Android for various different operators and Smartphone
manufacturers. According to Thierry Ehrmann, "the internet acquired its first
billion users via PC; the next two billion are arriving via mobile devices...
well before 2015". Indeed, after a series of fruitful meetings with Telecom
operators, thierry Erhmann is now convinced that Internet kiosks, paid by the
minute or per download, will begin to appear later this year. Numerous
operators are apparently preparing multi-level kiosk offers.
Users will be able to access downloaded Artprice data, even
available off-line, at any time or place. Using their iPhone and now, with
even greater facility, their iPad, Artprice clients can access all of
Artprice's services: art prices and indices databases with more than 27
million indices and auction results covering 405,000 artists; databases
containing 108 million high-definition images of artworks, and the world's
largest market place for buying and selling art along with the full range of
Artprice services.
For over a year Artprice users have been using http://web.artprice.com/iphone/ to discover the new Artprice applications
dedicated to iPhone. They use their iPhones notably to access the latest
global art market information and they can download, in one operation, the 20
latest articles posted by Artprice's press agency -ArtMarketInsight- that is
a reference for more than 6,300 international press and audio media around

Worldlink Launches the UK's First Free Real-Time Financial Information Service to the General Public
LONDON, June 7, 2010-- Worldlink, the owner of the UK and US patent for the transmission of
profiled real-time data to mobile devices, is making its imobilemarkets
financial service product available FREE from today. That means that anyone
interested in monitoring their investments will have the same information
available to them as a City trader. This will allow them to make informed
investment decisions, whether they are on the move or sitting at their desk.
To take advantage of this FREE service, which is automatically uploaded
to both a customer's mobile and desktop, subscribers have to provide their
name and create a password. The whole process is concluded in seconds and
information such as a person's address is not required.
In this time of increasing financial volatility, even retail investors,
want to keep up to speed with what is happening in the financial markets and
until now, they have had to rely on services which are at least 15 minutes
delayed. As we have seen in recent months, minutes, even seconds, can see
massive swings in stock markets and relying on a delayed service could mean
the difference between making and losing money.
Investors are also becoming more sophisticated trading Spread, Contracts
for Difference and Currencies. This demands access to real-time information
so that money can be made whether you are travelling on the train or having
lunch.
The imobilemarkets service provides the following:
- Stock Markets - real-time share information so that customers can watch
share prices change in real-time across the London Stock Exchange,
Turquoise, AIM and Plus markets
- Foreign Exchange - real-time information on a wide range of currency
pairings
- Commodities - pricing information on the most popular currencies traded
- Watchlists - where you can track the performance of your own share
portfolio
- News - Stock market, economic and company information can be tracked in
real-time so you can find out what news and how the news affects the
stock market
- Charts - customers can track the historic performance of share for
example, over a five year period
The imobilemarkets product also allows you to trade via the service. Once
a customer subscribes, they can take advantage of the "Broker Button" which
is a telephone number linked directly to Worldlink's share dealing service so
shares can be bought and sold wherever a customer happens to be.
Neil Riches, Managing Director and Founder of Worldlink commented: "We
are delighted to be able to offer customers free real-time financial
information. For too long, those people who want access to real-time
information have had to satisfy themselves with delayed information which is
not reliable enough when making important investment decisions. A lot can
happen in fifteen minutes in the stock market.
"The only other alternative to delayed information is real-time
information which in some cases can cost hundreds, if not thousands of pounds
for people to use. What Worldlink is doing by offering its service for free
is democratising the availability of financial information and putting the
most up to date information in the hands of the retail investors so that they
can make informed investment decisions. Worldlink is able to do this because
we own the patent to transmit profiled real-time information to mobiles and
constructing the technology to bring the imobilemarkets product to market has
been ten years in the making."
For those people who want to register for the free service, go to http://worldlink.worldlink-shop.com or simply text 'APP [space] WOR' to
'88833' from your mobile. [space] means enter a space between the words.

Unveils three immediate design enablement initiatives to speed system-to-IC design cycles
HSINCHU, Taiwan, June 7 -- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, Ltd. (TWSE: 2330, NYSE: TSM) today extended its Open Innovation Platform(TM) with another focus on system-level design, analog/mixed-signal (AMS)/RF design and two-dimensional/three-dimensional integrated circuit (2-D/3-D IC) implementation. At the same time the company introduced the first three initiatives from the new focus.
TSMC originally launched the Open Innovation Platform in 2008 as an industry-wide design enablement initiative. To date, the Open Innovation platform has accelerated time-to-market, improved return on design investment and reduced design infrastructure duplication. It includes a set of interoperable ecosystem interfaces, collaborative components and design flows that efficiently empower innovation throughout the supply chain thereby enabling creation and sharing of newly-created revenue and profitability. For example, iPDK, iDRC, iLVS, iRCX, Digital Reference Flow, Integrated Signoff Flow and RF Reference Design Kit are all in production use today.
"TSMC's Open Innovation Platform delivers comprehensive and innovative design technology services that remove advanced technology adoption barriers. It helps lower design costs and improves time-to-market," said Dr Fu-Chieh Hsu, Vice President of Design Technology Platform and Deputy Head of Research & Development. "The Open Innovation Platform will now begin addressing system-level design's cost and complexity and enable packaging of entire electronic systems onto multi-chip packages."
Open Innovation Platform Roadmap Update
The Open Innovation Platform will extend beyond power, performance and area considerations (PPA) and interoperability initiatives to feature new collaborative ecosystem programs that focus on electronic-system level (ESL) design, virtual platforms and high-level synthesis (HLS). Other new programs will address 65nm, 40nm and 28nm analog, mixed-signal and RF design methodologies while a third direction tackles multi-die packaging through 2-D/3-D IC design methodology, innovative silicon interposer and through silicon via (TSV) manufacturing capabilities.
The Open Innovation Platform's Alliance programs collaborate with EDA, IP, software IP, systems software and design services partners. The objectives are to deliver accelerated system-level design, reduced system design cost, a faster system-to-IC implementation design cycle, and faster time-to-market.
"The design ecosystem must move beyond its current bounds and embrace the systems- level challenges that are at the heart of every design consideration. The Open Innovation Platform began setting the standard for ecosystem collaboration two years ago. TSMC continues to answer the market's call and will build that same collaborative spirit on a system-level basis," explained S.T. Juang, senior director, Design Infrastructure Marketing at TSMC.
The Open Innovation Platform's global Ecosystem Alliance programs have grown to include 30 EDA partners, 38 IP partners, 23 Design Center Alliance (DCA) partners, and 9 Value Chain Aggregator (VCA) partners. All partners participate in one or more of the Open Innovation Platform collaboration programs. TSMC also begins to work collaboratively with industry organizations, such as IPL Alliance and Si2, to promote the interoperability standards based on TSMC interoperable EDA formats.
Three New Initiatives
TSMC is introducing Radio Frequency Reference Design Kit (RF RDK) as an outgrowth of an extended Open Innovation Platform and will shortly announce the availability of Analog/Mixed-Signal (AMS) Reference Flow 1.0, Reference Flow 11.0.
Radio Frequency Reference Design Kit (RF RDK) 2.0 targets TSMC's 65nm RF CMOS process technology, accelerating analog, mixed-signal, and RF designs and RF System-on-Chip (SoC) verification and integration. It resolves the long-standing challenge of performing full chip verification on SoC devices that support analog, RF, mixed signal and digital content.
The new design kits implement a top-down RF design methodology and a system-level simulation flow that reduces design cycle time and encourages IP reuse. The RF RDK 2.0 is in Open Access database that supports new RF design capabilities including a circuit sizing and design centering approach, electromagnetic (EM)-aware RF simulation and analysis, custom RF inductor synthesis and modeling, and substrate noise modeling and analysis (SNA) to address the noise coupling challenges in complex mixed-signal and RF SoCs.
Design Community Weighs In
Reaction to TSMC's extension of Open Innovation Platform has met with wide acceptance from main design community providers.
"The electronic design community is embracing the EDA360 vision to enable fastest approach from concept to consumer and together with IP suppliers, EDA vendors and silicon manufacturers, we have diligently collaborated to build a cohesive path for designers," said Lip-Bu Tan, president and chief executive officer, Cadence. "TSMC's Open Innovation Platform is a proven, integral part of this path. TSMC's Open Innovation Platform will now make significant advancements in low-power, mixed-signal, system-level and 3D-IC design to enable further productivity improvements that our mutual customers need."
"Going forward, Mentor and TSMC are developing complete solutions for the TSMC design ecosystem, " said Walden C. Rhines, Chairman and CEO, Mentor Graphics. "The TSMC OIP effort is not just words -- the Mentor Track in Reference Flow 11.0, and the co-developed iDRC and iLVS languages, are real usable results."
"Collaboration across the entire design eco-system -- customers, foundries, IP and EDA suppliers -- is critical for lower design risk and cost, better power and performance, and customer differentiation, " said Aart de Geus, Chairman and CEO, Synopsys. "The new technologies in this phase of TSMC OIP, such as system-level design, analog/mixed-signal (AMS) design and thru-silicon-via, bring key solutions to speed System-to-IC realization."
