Consumer Watchdog Files White House FOIA Request for Ex-Googler's Email
White House Internet Policy Chief Andrew McLaughlin's 'Buzz' Profile Showed Continued Ties to Internet Giant
WASHINGTON, April 1 -- Consumer Watchdog filed a Freedom of Information Act request today with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy seeking copies of email between Internet Policy chief Andrew McLaughlin and his former employer, Google Inc.
The nonpartisan, nonprofit consumer group made the request after an online publication printed an article showing that McLaughlin's "Buzz" profile revealed that many of his most frequent email correspondents were Google employees. Before being appointed the OSTP's Deputy Chief Technology Officer for Internet Policy, McLaughlin was Google's head of Global Public Policy, its top global lobbyist.
Consumer Watchdog opposed McLaughlin's appointment by President Obama saying that it violated the intent of the Administration's ethics rules meant to end the revolving door between lobbyists and the executive branch.
"The appointment was troubling when it was announced, but signs that McLaughlin is continuing a cozy relationship with his former employer while serving in the top White House Internet policy job are even more disconcerting," said John M. Simpson, consumer advocate for Consumer Watchdog. "The public has a right to see exactly what sort of messages have been exchanged with his former employer and colleagues."
Consumer Watchdog's FOIA request seeks "access to and copies of all electronic mail communications between Office of Science and Technology Policy Deputy Chief Technology Officer for Internet Policy Andrew McLaughlin and officers and employees of Google Inc. and its contracted lobbyists and representatives...
"Include electronic mail records from Mr. McLaughlin's OSTP address amclaughlin@ostp.eop.gov, his Gmail address and other e-mail addresses he has used as an official of the OSTP."
Ironically, McLaughlin's apparent continued ties to Google were revealed because of the Internet giant's lack of concern about consumers' privacy. When Google first launched its new social networking service, Buzz, as part of its popular Gmail application, users' profiles publicly revealed their most frequent contacts as the default mode. In the face of consumer backlash, including a pending formal complaint to the Federal Trade Commission, Google has since modified Buzz's privacy controls.
"Maybe now that Google's own privacy and that of a former executive have been compromised, the company will finally understand that privacy matters to consumers," said Simpson.

Revenue increased 65.6% year-over-year to $6.9 million
SHENZHEN, China, April 1 -- China Skyrise Digital Service Inc. (BULLETIN BOARD: CSKD) ("China Skyrise" or the "Company") yesterday announced financial results for the year ended December 31, 2009.
Fiscal 2009 Results
Revenue totaled approximately $6.9 million in 2009, a strong increase of 65.6%, versus $4.1 million for 2008. This rapid revenue growth was primarily driven by higher unit sales more than offsetting lower average selling prices.
"We are delighted to see that demand for our digital intercom products and solutions continued to experience robust growth in 2009 despite a challenging business environment," said Mr. Mingchun Zhou, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of China Skyrise. "Revenues grew 65.6% in 2009, and our market share expanded to 12%. During the year, we earned nearly all of our revenue from digital intercom products and solutions, which we believe serves as an indicator that long-term industry trends are working in our favor. In terms of geographical contribution, we saw strength in the percentage of sales attributable to sales in Guangdong, our home province, which contributed 57.8% to our total sales during the period, compared to 31.3% in the previous year. Our product sales were also strong in Zhejiang, Hubei, and Jiangsu provinces and in Beijing, which together accounted for 32.1% of total sales."
"In September 2009, we went public in the U.S. through a share-exchange transaction, which represented another major milestone for China Skyrise," continued Mr. Zhou. "We are excited to be the one of the first companies in China's digital intercom sector to list publicly on a U.S. stock exchange. We believe that this represents an important step for us as we seek a higher platform to continue our geographic expansion and implement our strategic growth plans."
Cost of goods sold climbed by 157.6% to $4.7 million in 2009, or 68.5% of sales, from $1.8 million, or 44.1% of sales in the prior period. The Company reduced prices to maintain and continue to gain market share as customers became more price-sensitive in the global financial crisis. The cost of goods sold was also negatively affected by a moderate increase in raw materials cost due to an unfavorable supply-demand imbalance. In addition, some software- development cost in 2008 was recorded in cost of goods sold in 2009.
Gross profit for 2009 totaled $2.2 million, or 31.5% of sales, compared with $2.3 million, or 55.9% of sales, for 2008. The decrease in gross margin was largely attributable to a shift in customer demand towards standard products, versus high-end and luxury products, which were stronger in 2009.
Operating expenses totaled approximately $1.3 million for 2009, roughly flat with 2008. Total operating expenses amounted to 19.3% of sales in 2009, compared with 32.0% in 2008. Selling expenses decreased by 2.6% year over year to $0.5 million due to a contracted sales network. General and administrative expenses, though, grew 1.7% year over year to $0.8 million. Research and development expenses increased 8.9% to $418,177 in 2009 (amounting to 6.1% of sales) from $383,952 in 2008 (9.3% of sales), as the Company added more research and development employees.
Operating income was $0.8 million compared to $1.0 million in 2008.
The Company's net income in 2009 was $1.1 million, down 14.4% from $1.2 million in 2008. Earnings per basic and diluted share was $0.05 for 2009, compared to $0.07 for 2008.
Financial Condition
As of December 31, 2009, China Skyrise had $0.4 million in cash and cash equivalents and approximately $3.8 million in working capital. The Company had $0.4 million of short-term debt and no long-term liabilities. As of December 31, 2009, shareholders' equity was $4.4 million.
Business Outlook
China Skyrise maintains a positive outlook for China's security surveillance sector, and management estimates that the market for video surveillance is growing at an annual rate of 15% or greater. Management believes that the Company is well positioned to benefit from the continuing momentum of China's residential real estate industry. In the first quarter alone, the Company began shipping to six new intercom projects in Macau, Taiwan, Haikou (in Hainan Province), Ningbo (in Zhejiang Province) and Hefei (in Anhui Province).
While the Company continues to gain market share with its low-end digital solutions displacing competitors' high-end analog solutions, China Skyrise also stands to benefit from analog-to-digital upgrades of existing residential neighborhoods, a huge market. The Company is also developing a new cost-saving system-on-chip, and has initiated projects with two of China's leading 3G wireless communication service providers to test-launch standalone wireless intercom solutions. Wireless connectivity opens up potential markets for value-added services such as broadband access and home shopping, serving Chinese families. To maintain its technology leadership in the digital intercom segment, China Skyrise plans to maintain a healthy level of R&D investment, with R&D spending expected to grow by 30% annually from 2010 to 2012.

We believe our current backlog of approximately $2.2 million, together with continuing new business wins will generate revenue of approximately $10.2 million and net income of approximately $1.8 million in 2010," concluded Mr. Zhou.

ICSA Labs Offers Tips to Help Vendors Ensure Their IT Products Meet New Federal Requirements
New IT Products Purchased by Federal Agencies Must Adhere to IPv6 Standards, Starting in July
MECHANICSBURG, Pa., April 1 -- Federal agencies will soon be required to buy only networking and IT products that meet specific Internet protocol version 6 compliance requirements as recommended by the Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology. The requirements include product testing in an accredited third-party laboratory.
The goal of the National Institute of Standards and Technology's (NIST) USGv6 testing program is to ensure interoperability among all IT and networking components used to build, maintain and secure the IT infrastructure of federal agencies.
USGv6 Testing Program Tips
As an accredited third-party testing facility, ICSA Labs offers the following tips and guidance for vendors seeking to deliver USGv6-compliant products:
-- Thoroughly review the USGv6 Testing Program User's Guide, which
explains all of the requirements and procedures.
-- Federal agencies can procure IPv6 hardware and software only if it
adheres to USGv6 Testing Program guidelines, as well as the individual
agency's network architecture requirements.
-- IT suppliers should not assume their IPv6 products meet USGv6 Testing
Program guidelines. These products must be evaluated by an accredited
third-party test laboratory.
-- Any product that contains an IPv6 component must be tested, including
operating systems, routers, switches, firewalls, intrusion prevention
and detection devices, Web application firewalls and unified threat
management devices, as well as network-connected devices such as
printers and fax machines.
"With the compliance deadline just a few months away, vendors that have not had their IPv6 products tested should start the process immediately," said Guy Snyder, secure communications program manager, ICSA Labs. "As the first of two testing labs accredited under the USGv6 testing program managed by NIST, we can help product vendors fulfill this requirement."
Moving to IPv6
In August 2005, the Office of Management and Budget directed NIST to develop a technical infrastructure of standards and testing necessary to support wide-scale adoption of IPv6 in U.S. government agencies, resulting in the USGv6 Testing Program.
NIST worked with several test labs and developers including ICSA Labs to create this program, which provides a procurement path for vendors to sell their products to the U.S. government. ICSA Labs became the first third-party laboratory accredited to test USGv6 product capabilities.

Certification Process for CDMA2000 and LTE Multi-Mode Device Interoperability Will Be Ready by the End of 2010
LAS VEGAS, April 1 -- The CDMA Certification Forum® (CCF), a global non-profit organization that certifies single-mode and multi-mode CDMA2000® devices, today announced that it will be ready to certify the interworking of multi-mode CDMA2000/LTE devices by the end of 2010. Test platforms are currently being developed to support the 3rd Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2) test specification, C.S0095-0, which was published in December 2009. Accordingly, the CCF Test Plan will be updated to support evolved high-rate packet data (eHRPD) networks and the CDMA2000 1X, EV-DO and LTE multi-mode device interworking test cases included in the 3GPP2 specification. The CCF will begin platform validation in mid-2010, enabling it to provide a complete testing and certification process for the CDMA2000 portion of CDMA2000/LTE multi-mode devices by the end of the year.
"With LTE deployments augmenting CDMA2000 networks this year it's important that multi-mode devices be tested and certified to perform optimally across both technologies," said Thomas Erickson, President and CEO of the CCF. "Critical to seamless 3G and 4G interoperability is the interworking between multi-mode devices and their radio access networks. The completion and validation of our test platform will allow the CCF to provide the only comprehensive testing and certification process for CDMA2000 1X and EV-DO devices incorporating LTE by the end of 2010."
The CCF is currently developing its test plan, test cases and scripts to certify CDMA2000/LTE devices, enabling CDMA2000 operators to be among the first to deploy LTE on a commercial basis with WorldModeTM devices. Using its authorized test facilities and the same streamlined processes used in certifying other CDMA2000 devices, the CCF will ensure CDMA2000 operators receive certified devices employing LTE in an expedient manner.
The CCF is also working closely with the Global Certification Forum (GCF) to align the proposed LTE certification requirements and priorities and implement a common certification solution, enabling manufacturers to test once for multiple certifications and minimize development time- and cost-to-market. The testing and certification process for CDMA2000/LTE multimode devices enjoys the active support of CCF members from around the world. Several operators, device manufacturers and test companies are working together on completing the entire process by year-end.

Expanded Commitment & More Vehicles in Dealerships
Ford, confirmed two new models equipped with HD Radio Technology are now available at dealerships - the 2011 model year Mustang and Super Duty. Ford, which earlier this year announced plans for the first ever vehicles to feature factory installed iTunes Tagging, will additionally include HD Radio Technology in the Taurus, Econoline, Escape, F-Series, Flex, and Fusion line-ups.
Lincoln previously announced that the first vehicle line to offer HD Radio Technology as a factory-installed option would be the MKX. Other models that will include HD Radio Technology are the MKS, MKT and Navigator.
With BMW's recent launch of the 2011 model year 5 Series, the automaker's entire product line has HD Radio Technology as standard equipment. The 7 Series, 6 Series, 3 Series, 1 Series, X5, X6, X3, Z4 Roadster and 5 Series Gran Turismo make up the rest of the balance of the HD Radio-equipped lineup.
Hyundai is also offering HD Radio Technology as standard with the introductory inclusion in the Equus, their high-end flagship model. Other Hyundai models offering HD Radio Technology as a factory-installed option include the Genesis sedan and the 2011 model year Sonata.
Also embracing HD Radio Technology, Kia has confirmed plans for factory-installed HD Radio receivers in multiple 2011 model year vehicles, including select sedans and SUVs.
The New York Auto Show will also be the venue for Scion to announce the arrival of the all new 2011 model year iQ and tC. Both these vehicles offer HD Radio Technology in the upgraded audio system packages. Those vehicles join the xB and xD in offering HD Radio-enabled enhanced audio systems.
And rounding out the announcements, Volvo will make HD Radio Technology standard on the new 2011 model year S60. The C30, C70, S40, TC, S80, V50, V70, XC60, XC70 and XC90, which are already standard, are currently available at dealerships today.
OEMs Moving Towards Standardization of HD Radio Technology
More automakers are accelerating their HD Radio adoption from a factory-installed option to standard equipment. BMW and Volvo both offer the technology as standard across their entire vehicle line-up. Other OEMs have committed to offering digital radio as standard on specific models, including Audi, Hyundai, Jaguar, Mercedes, and Rolls-Royce.

AT&T Wireless Network Provides Greater Flexibility for Mobile Associates

With the mobile devices, each merchandising specialist has access to a personalized daily task list to download store specific SKU-based assignments for the day - all before they arrive at their first store. AT&T Supports EPA's National Cell Phone Recycling Week
AT&T, EPA, Community Volunteers to Fight E-Waste With Nationwide Campaign Urging Consumers to Recycle Their Wireless Devices and Accessories
DALLAS, April 1 -- Today may be April Fool's Day, but recycling wireless phones is no joke to AT&T* and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). AT&T today announced its continued commitment to the EPA's Plug-In To eCycling National Cell Phone Recycling Week, which runs this year April 5-11. AT&T will promote the effort in stores, online, and through community recycling drives led by the AT&T Pioneers, a group of AT&T volunteers.
The EPA's project brings together leading cell phone manufacturers and service providers to encourage consumers to recycle used wireless devices, batteries, chargers and other accessories -- and to reduce the amount of reusable materials in landfills, including e-waste. AT&T continues to offer three simple ways to donate and recycle phones: Wireless customers of any carrier can drop off used cell phones and accessories at any of the 2,000-plus AT&T stores across the U.S.; they can go to http://www.att.com/recycle to download free shipping labels and mail them in for recycling or request that a free shipping envelope be mailed to them for recycling. Part of the proceeds from these efforts benefits Cell Phones for Soldiers (CPFS), a charity that recycles cell phones and uses the proceeds to buy free phone cards for troops overseas.
The customer-facing recycling efforts that AT&T offers through its stores, community drives and online tools have added volume to its broader corporate recycling work. AT&T also recycles wireless phones that are returned through other channels, sending phones at the end of their lifecycles to recycling plants. In 2009, AT&T collected more than 4.2 million cell phones and almost 1.8 million pounds of batteries and accessories, overall.
Encouraging cell phone recycling is one way AT&T is working to tackle environmental issues. Other initiatives include:
-- AT&T recently challenged its customers to make the switch to paperless
billing, and pledged to have a tree planted for every customer who
makes the switch -- up to a million customers by the end of 2010. If
a million customers make the switch, this would save 400,000 pounds of
paper, avoid 6 million pounds of greenhouse gases, and prevent 4
million gallons of wastewater from discharging into lakes, streams,
and rivers in a year.**
-- In March, AT&T announced its transition to smaller and more
eco-friendly packaging for the wireless device chargers, cases,
batteries and data cables it sells. This will save more than 200 tons
of wasted plastic and paper in 2010, avoiding more than 1,100 cubic
yards of landfill space -- enough to house nearly 10 school buses --
by the end of 2010. ***
-- As announced previously, AT&T begins offering the AT&T ZERO Charger in
its stores, nationwide this May. The charger does not waste power
when left plugged in, and it improves charging efficiency when
powering a device. Its interchangeable design allows customers to use
the same charger for future handsets and will, over time, cut the
number of chargers produced, thus reducing future landfill waste.
-- In 2009, AT&T announced plans to invest up to $565 million as part of
a long-term strategy to deploy more than 15,000 alternative-fuel
vehicles over a 10-year period. AT&T also works to enhance energy
performance and reduce energy consumption and has begun to use
alternative energy sources such as wind and solar power.
AT&T estimates it will collect roughly 14 million wireless devices for recycling by the end of 2011, which is the environmental equivalent of keeping more than 920 tons of primary materials and more than 13 tons of toxic waste out of landfills.****

Cox and USO Partner on Cell Phone Recycling Program with Proceeds Benefiting Soldiers
~Program Runs from April 1 through April 30~
CHESAPEAKE, Va., April 1 -- From April 1 through April 30, Cox will accept cell phones for recycling at its two Retail Solutions Stores in the Hampton Roads region. Cox and the USO of Hampton Roads are partnering on this cell phone recycling initiative for April, Earth Month. Proceeds from the recycling of phones will be used to provide wireless devices and/or phone cards to Hampton Roads-based soldiers and their families serving our country. The USO of Hampton Roads will coordinate the purchase and distribution of the devices.
"We are very pleased to partner with the USO on this environmental initiative which also supports the military. It's easy to participate and we hope that Hampton Roads residents take advantage of this very simple way to support our troops and the environment," said Leigh Woisard, Vice President Public Affairs.
