RoadRunner Sports is Keeping fit With Site-Search Optimizations
SAN DIEGO, California, March 22, 2010--
- RoadRunner Sports Leads the way in an Ongoing Marathon of Etail
Success, Obtaining Significant Economic Value From its Site-Search and Online
Merchandising, Along With a 30% Increase in Search Engine Originated Traffic
RoadRunner Sports, the leading national retailer of running gear,
experiences positive economic performance from its continuous investments in
Site-Search optimization by hitting end-user trends as they emerge and
improving SEO using site-search data.
In order to stay on top of customer demands and varying sneaker
trends, RoadRunner Sports relies on Site-Search analytics to reveal demand
dynamics as they emerge. Spotting trends earlier than competition and
answering end-user interest with smart merchandizing campaigns makes the
whole difference.
"RoadRunner Sports experienced a significant increase in
conversion rate within a short amount of time when using fallback reports to
identify popular items not carried in store and suggesting alternative
similar products it did supply instead, so as to prevent customers from
leaving empty handed," said Dan Kelly, RoadRunner Sports' VP of Information
Technology.
"We depend heavily on our Site-Search analytics to guide us in
the right retail direction, which inevitably reflect the voice of our
customers. For example, once toning shoes entered the market, we were quick
to identify "MBT toning shoes" as a frequent fallback. Through site search
optimization, we were able to have Easy Tones and Skechers Shape Ups
programmed to appear when a customer queried "MBT toning shoes" instead. Over
1,200 pairs of toning shoes were sold within 2 weeks! I am very pleased with
the way our Celebros Site Search continues to contribute to our success,"
exclaimed Mr. Kelly.
Another significant benefit for RoadRunner Sports has been
connecting its site-search with its site navigation menus, enabling
site-search to manage the category pages rather than having them pre-created
manually. Site management efforts have been notably simplified and costs have
been drastically reduced. This has further allowed for a better response time
to update the site with changes in the product catalog and has given the
end-user a coherent experience, whether searching through the search-box or
navigating the site menus.
The category pages were made search-engine friendly through the
use of the URL-masking technique to make sure the category pages are
accessible to search engine crawlers and achieve a good ranking in the
results of Google, Yahoo and other leading search engines.
In order to further improve its search-engine ranking, RoadRunner
Sports deployed Popular Search Pages, listing the search results for the top
queries ( http://www.roadrunnersports.com/rrs/popularSearches/PopularSearches.html).
RoadRunner Sports saw an increase of 30% in search engine originated traffic!
The Popular Search Pages are managed automatically by the Celebros Traffic
Builder and are updated periodically as the store's catalog changes. "We
experience an increase of search engine originated traffic each time our
catalog is updated," added Mr. Kelly.
Road Runner Sports, founded in San Diego, California, in 1983,
provides fitness and sports enthusiasts the world's largest selection of
men's and women's running shoes, jogging shoes, running apparel and
accessories to everyone from beginning runners to seasoned marathoners,
cross-country runners and triathletes. Customers shop in a fun, friendly
environment for running and walking gear from the biggest names in running
such as Asics, New Balance, Nike, Saucony, adidas, Brooks and more. Road
Runner Sports has retail stores in Scottsdale and Tempe, Arizona; Concord,
Costa Mesa, Laguna Hills, San Carlos, San Diego, Thousand Oaks, Torrance, and
West Hills, California; Westminster, Colorado; Naperville, Illinois;
Columbia, Maryland; North Brunswick, Paramus, and Shrewsbury, New Jersey;
Columbus, Ohio; Tualatin, Oregon; Falls Church, Virginia; and Kent and
Seattle, Washington.
Internet Radio Startup Makes Music Truly Democratic at Demo 2010
The Plan: Provide an Apparatus that Introduces Artists' Music to Listeners
LOS ANGELES, March 22 -- Immitter.com is enthusiastic and honored to be presenting at the 2010 DEMO Conference. DEMO has introduced both emerging startups and products of vanguard technology companies from across sectors and specialties. Immitters' specialty is music; its platform is the Internet. Immitter is the Internet Music Transmitter. Its mission is to broadcast music from aspiring artists to its intended audience -- people who value it.
Immitter operates on the premise that everyone enjoys discovering new music. Many of us are willing to venture beyond the traditional label driven model to listen to music from aspiring artists. We do not, however, have time to sort through current platforms for independent music discovery, namely the millions of profiles on Myspace music and other social networking sites. And, even more problematically we don't always know where to begin when confronted by an overwhelming number of unsigned bands to sort through.
Jermaine Kelly and Andre Nurse, cofounders of Immitter, understand this very specific problem -- they are independent musicians endeavoring to get their music to its intended audience. They founded Immitter in response to meeting listeners who are open to discovering hidden musical gems being overlooked by the major record label model. Though those audiences are open to listening to aspiring musicians, they are not open to spending hours sorting through hundreds of music profile pages on social networking sites to discover them.
The solution is to deliver the music to the audiences. Currently, there is no Pandora like promotion engine that broadcasts music from aspiring artists. Musicians hoping to have their content heard must wait for people to stumble upon it on Myspace Music. Immitter imagined the possibility of aspiring artists being able to upload their original content onto a transmitter to be broadcasted according to specific parameters, just as Pandora does with music from labels.
For the first time, aspiring artists will have their content delivered on their behalf. This is a service that musicians will be willing to pay for because it connects their original content to its target audience, which is the first step toward making the transition from aspiring musician to professional artist. Immitter assists musicians in making that transition by helping listeners find music that is relevant to them. Music is created to be heard; Immitter is the next step in ensuring that the right people hear it.

Now, enterprises can quickly deploy in-house apps, employees can manage custom apps directly from their desktop iTunes instance, and developers can rapidly test and deploy new enterprise apps.
"AppCentral's support of the iPhone makes the iPhone even more attractive than it already is for our Enterprise customers," said Ken Singer, CEO of Ondeego. "Enterprise customers can now quickly and easily manage in-house business apps on the iPhone alongside other phones such as the BlackBerry and Java Phones."

"With AppCentral, we can now electronically deliver the apps that we build for our clients who can test them and give us their approval. Once approved, the employee can directly install the application on their iPhone themselves."

Verizon to Turn Off Lights in Company Facilities Around the World in Support of Earth Hour
Company Expects to Conserve More Than 40,000 Kilowatt Hours of Energy
NEW YORK, March 22 -- To support Earth Hour and help raise employee awareness of energy-efficiency opportunities, Verizon will turn off all nonessential lighting for one hour at more than 450 company locations around the world on Saturday (March 27).
Verizon expects to conserve more than 40,000 kilowatt hours of energy as a result of darkening approximately 30 million square feet from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. local time.
Sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund, Earth Hour is an event in which millions of Americans will turn out their lights for one hour to support action on climate change and creating a cleaner, safer and more secure future. Now in its third year, the event in 2009 attracted more than 80 million participants in the U.S. and nearly a billion people around the world, as lights dimmed on such global icons as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Sydney's Opera House, the Great Pyramids of Gaza and New York's Empire State Building.
(NOTE: A video prepared by the World Wildlife Fund provides more information about Earth Hour.)
"Our ultra-fast broadband and wireless networks are playing increasingly important roles in helping our residential and business customers cut their carbon footprints, and we're equally committed to reducing our own," said James Gowen, chief sustainability officer for Verizon. "That's why we're asking our employees and our customers to join us not just for Earth Hour but throughout the year to find ways to reduce energy and recycle at work and at home."
Reducing Verizon's Carbon Footprint
The company remains committed to finding practical and innovative ways to increase energy efficiency and bolster conservation efforts. For example, Verizon operates the largest fuel cell site of its kind in the nation. Using seven fuel cells, the company's Energy Star Award-winning facility in Garden City, N.Y., can generate enough electrical power per hour to meet the energy needs of 400 single-family homes.
Another of Verizon's ENERGY STAR rated facilities, Verizon's operations center in Basking Ridge, N.J., has earned the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED® Silver certification for the center's environmentally friendly design and energy efficiency. The company operates nearly 46 Energy Star-rated facilities, including many retail stores across the country.
Other Verizon initiatives include:
-- Creating an industry standard - Verizon was the first
telecommunications company to require that the network equipment it
purchases be 20 percent more energy efficient.
-- Employees have reduced engine idling, which has cut fuel consumption
by more than 2 million gallons (equivalent to taking some 3,400 cars
off the road for a year).
-- Electronically delivering approximately 100 million bills to
customers.
Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE:VZ)(NASDAQ:VZ), headquartered in New York, is a global leader in delivering broadband and other wireless and wireline communications services to mass market, business, government and wholesale customers. Verizon Wireless operates America's most reliable wireless network, serving more than 91 million customers nationwide. Verizon also provides converged communications, information and entertainment services over America's most advanced fiber-optic network, and delivers innovative, seamless business solutions to customers around the world. SailPoint Releases Next Generation Provisioning Solution
Company Builds on Its Identity Governance Base and Provisioning Heritage to Streamline Implementations and Reduce Costs
AUSTIN, Texas, March 22 -- Global 500 companies have invested millions of dollars on IT provisioning implementations, yet most still cannot provide prompt access to resources for new employees, immediate removal of access for terminated workers, or rapid processing for all the changes as employees move around the organization. To address that problem, SailPoint has added end-to-end provisioning capabilities to its award-winning identity governance solution, SailPoint IdentityIQ(TM), and can now automate the entire user access request and fulfillment process. Building on its early innovations in identity governance and leveraging its founders' provisioning heritage at Waveset Technologies, SailPoint's governance-based provisioning solution is designed to simplify implementations, reduce costs and deliver immediate business value.
"Companies struggle today with provisioning because the technology is expensive, overly complex and difficult to implement," said Mark McClain, CEO and cofounder of SailPoint. "The cost and complexity of implementing provisioning has limited the extent of its deployment in most organizations to a small minority of total applications. By implementing provisioning on an identity governance foundation, companies will benefit from shorter implementation times and broader application coverage. At the same time, it will be much easier to involve business users in all aspects of compliance and governance processes associated with user access control."
SailPoint's new approach to provisioning begins with a governance layer, which provides an enterprise-wide view into a company's identity data, applies intelligent, risk-aware controls to user access based on corporate policies, and then automates access request fulfillment across the organization through the most efficient processes available. This offers customers:
-- Simplified deployments. SailPoint's approach begins with the mining
and modeling of all necessary information about users, access
privileges, roles and policy into a single governance platform,
enabling organizations to automate access request and provisioning
processes without extensive workflow and custom coding. This reduces
custom coding requirements by 200-300 percent.
-- Lower deployment costs. SailPoint provides an open and flexible
approach to the "last mile" of provisioning - the connector layer
where changes are executed on IT resources - by supporting multiple
techniques and processes for making changes to resources. This
eliminates the hundreds of thousands of dollars organizations
typically spend on "last mile" integrations. It also allows customers
to immediately focus their identity management efforts where the
highest value exists: at the business process and governance layer to
ensure consistent, enterprise-wide compliance with internal and
external security mandates.
-- Business and IT alignment. SailPoint provides the first user interface
designed specifically for business users to request access and manage
user lifecycle events. Traditional provisioning tools were designed
for use by IT administrators and were too cryptic and technical for
business users. With its business-friendly user interfaces, SailPoint
makes it easy to involve business users in all identity management
processes, such as access requests, change approvals, access
certifications and role lifecycle management.
"Having a foundational identity and access governance platform in place and then expanding it into provisioning makes a lot of sense for companies," said Ian Glazer, senior analyst at Burton Group (acquired by Gartner). "Building a complete view of entitlements and access privileges is step one. The next step is to leverage role management and create a centralized policy that dictates who should have access to those resources. Companies then have the benefit of leveraging that model, built for compliance, across its provisioning processes."
SailPoint's new provisioning solution, IdentityIQ Lifecycle Manager, will be available April 30 and provides the following key capabilities:
-- The industry's first access request interface designed specifically
for business users, which provides a "shopping cart" styled interface
for convenient and intuitive selection of roles and entitlements.
-- Full lifecycle event management that integrates with authoritative
sources, such as HR systems and corporate directories, to identify
changes in employment status, automatically trigger the appropriate
changes in IdentityIQ, and generate the appropriate provisioning
requests to ensure closed-loop access fulfillment.
-- A provisioning broker that enables organizations to centralize policy
and controls in a governance layer above provisioning, while
cost-effectively orchestrating changes to target resources using
3rd-party provisioning solutions, help desk solutions, emails sent to
a system administrator or SailPoint's own Provisioning Engine, which
includes more than 50 out-of-the-box read/write connectors and a
custom connector toolkit for deploying to custom applications.
About SailPoint
SailPoint's award-winning identity governance software, SailPoint IdentityIQ, helps organizations manage user access to critical systems and data, automate costly IT provisioning processes, streamline compliance efforts and reduce the risks of fraud, corporate data loss or theft and failed audits. Axis Cameras Chosen to Improve Safety on Madrid's Buses
MADRID, March 22, 2010--
- 9,000 Surveillance Cameras Will be Installed Across Madrid's Public
Bus Service
- The Network Cameras Include High Resolution Real Time Monitoring
The Municipal Transport Company of Madrid (EMT) has chosen Axis
Communications (http://www.axis.com/), the global leader in the network video
market(1), to deliver network surveillance cameras for Madrid's public bus
service. EMT has chosen Axis to help support its aim to become Europe's best
public transport company. The EUR20 million project will involve the
installation of more than 9,000 cameras in 2,300 buses.
The surveillance system includes high resolution real time recording and
monitoring, and also features a panic button which is connected to EMT's
Central Alarm Station. In the event of an emergency the Control Centre
Operator can notify the relevant emergency service. Each bus also includes
GPS so it is easy to locate the bus quickly.
The network surveillance cameras have already been installed in 400
buses, and it's expected that all buses will support the technology by the
end of this year. The tender was won by a consortium formed by Spanish IT and
security companies GRUPO ETRA (http://www.grupoetra.com/eng/home.aspx),
IECISA (http://www.ieci.es/) and PLETTAC
(http://www.plettac-electronics.es/index.jsp) who presented a project based
on Axis network cameras and video encoders.
Axis has supplied cameras that are robust, easy to install and compact,
yet also deliver high resolution images and include vibration resistance and
tampering alarms. Each bus will include three AXIS M3113-R
(http://www.axis.com/products/cam_m3113r/) network cameras and one AXIS Q7401
(http://www.axis.com/products/cam_q7401/) video encoder. The cameras support
SVGA (800x600) resolution, which provides enough detail to make it possible
to identify people, or objects.
The cameras also offer H.264 and Motion JPG compression formats. H.264
compression optimizes bandwidth use (critical for 3G mobile communications)
and storage requirements by considerably reducing the binary speed. The
cameras also support standard Power over Ethernet and can be integrated with
other devices and security systems.
Juan Luis Brizuela, Axis Communications Iberia Country Manager said,
"This project presented us with a challenge which resulted in a new range of
cameras that are well suited to the demands of public transport. We look
forward to continuing to work with the Municipal Transport Company of Madrid
this year and completing Europe's leading transport surveillance solution."
Ignacio Uria, Head of the VEA System Implementation Project (Security
Department of EMT) said, "For this pioneering project, it has been very
important to be able to rely on a camera vendor such as Axis Communications,
which has demonstrated a proven ability to support its customers closely.
Axis took full account of our previous experience with onboard video
surveillance and the specifications of the bus fleet. The network cameras are
ideally suited to our project's objectives, and we believe that, in view of
the similarities between urban bus transport systems, they could be
well-suited to the majority of transport systems in Spain, or the world."
Notes to editors
(1) Axis Communications is the global market leader in the network video
market with a market share of network cameras of 31.2 per cent. The world
market for network cameras alone is forecast to be worth more than $2.5
billion by 2013. The network camera market is set to have a CAGR of more than
28 per cent per year over the next five years, according to industry analyst
house IMS Research (http://www.imsresearch.com) in its latest market report entitled
'The World Market for CCTV and Video Surveillance Equipment 2009 Edition'
published in August 2009.

SAN DIEGO, March 22 -- OFC/NFOEC 2010, Booth 1023 -- Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd., and the U.S.-based OFS, Specialty Photonics Division, are pleased to announce worldwide commercial availability of a module to integrate both an Erbium-Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA) and a Raman Amplifier into a single unit. Raman amplifiers are known to have superior noise characteristics, and EDFAs provide higher gain of 15 dB to compensate for loss due to the number of components in the system and improve optical signal to noise ratio (OSNR). As transmission distances become longer, additional loss is created by the increased number of optical components in the system. By combining the two technologies into one compact high-performance package with an output power of 18 dBm, we are prepared to meet the demand of ultra-high bit rate transmissions of 40 Gbps networking and the 100 Gbps systems now becoming available.
The new ErFA40000 Series from Furukawa uses our high-speed control EDFAs and 1480 nm high-power pump lasers.'''
Furukawa and OFS will be exhibiting at OFC/NFOEC, Booth #1023 beginning March 22, 2010.

50 GHz Spacing 88 Channel Athermal Arrayed Waveguide Grating (AWG) Samples Now Available From Furukawa and OFS; Mass Production Planned to Start Summer 2010
OFC/NFOEC 2010, Booth 1023 -- Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd., and the U.S.-based OFS, Specialty Photonics Division, are pleased to announce launch of the new Athermal AWG, a temperature-independent multiplexer/demultiplexer for upgrading capacity in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical transmission systems. The device helps reduce cost by approximately 30% and helps save more than 50% space over conventional 50GHz spacing WDM configurations which use 2 separate 100 GHz spacing AWG modules and a high-unit-cost interleaver. This new design expands overall transmission capacity to meet demand by narrowing the bandwidth (i.e. signal spectrum) and the wavelength spacing between adjacent signals. We meet the challenge of manufacturing a 50GHz 88 channel Athermal AWG module with a single chip by applying high-refractive index difference technology to the optical waveguides.
Furukawa and OFS will be exhibiting at OFC/NFOEC, Booth #1023 beginning March 22, 2010.

Furukawa and OFS Announce 3 new Components for 100 Gbps Ultra-High Speed Transmission
SAN DIEGO, March 22 -- OFC/NFOEC 2010, Booth 1023 -- Furukawa Electric Co., Ltd., and the U.S.-based OFS, Specialty Photonics Division, are pleased to announce the availability of a Narrow Linewidth Full-Band Tunable Laser, a Coherent Mixer with Built-in Polarization Multiplexer/Demultiplexer, and a Polarization Maintaining Fiber with a new stress rod design for application in Optical Digital Coherent Transmission Systems. The next generation of ultra-high speed optical networks is going up to and beyond 100 Gbps, and new components are necessary to support these speeds.
Narrow Linewidth Full-Band Tunable Laser: Furukawa has developed a Tunable Distributed Feedback (DFB) laser with a linewidth less than 500 KHz. This decreases the linewidth of conventional DFB technology by a factor of 3 with an output optical power of 40 mW or higher. The high wavelength stability and high reliability characteristic of conventional DFB technology are maintained even over this decreased linewidth and high output power performance level.
Coherent Mixer with Built-in Polarization Mx/DMx: In order to generate ultra-high speed transmissions in an optical digital coherent system, system designers use a combination of a polarization multiplexer/demultiplexer and an optical interference device in a Dual Polarization Quadrature Phase Shift Keying (DP-QPSK) receiver.
Furukawa's established and proven planar lightwave circuit (PLC) technology has been applied into this new Coherent Mixer now integrated with a Built-in Polarization Mx/Dmx to improve the performance of DP-QPSK transmission. Our integration of these parts on one chip results in smaller size, while still maintaining superior loss uniformity (lower than 1 dB), low skew (typically lower than 1 ps), and high polarization extinction ratio (higher than 18 dB).
Polarization Maintaining Fiber with a New Stress Rod Design: In the DP-QPSK modulation system, optical signals have to be transmitted while keeping the state of polarization. This can occur between an optical local oscillator and a coherent mixer or between a signal light source and a modulator. The new PM fiber created by Furukawa's wholly owned subsidiary, OFS, achieves a superior polarization extinction ratio and low insertion loss with a novel design to support these systems.
Furukawa and OFS will be exhibiting at OFC/NFOEC, Booth #1023 beginning March 22, 2010.

further growth as markets recover and its new products gain customers.
2009 Successes included:

The company has a long list of blue-chip publishing clients such as
Random House, Pearson, Hachette and Harper Collins and also helps publishing
clients such as McGraw-Hill and the British Medical Journal to maximise
revenues from digitialising their publications, journals etc and exploiting
other on line revenues. In addition, the company has a new suite of software
called 'advance', which deals with all publishers' distribution, editing,
royalty payment systems - the company's systems handle the royalties of a
number of renowned authors including JK Rowling.
Enabling digital transformation
The publishing industry is going through an exciting period of
development and re-invention and the company's products are unique in the
industry for the breadth and depth of their capabilities, and because they
have been specifically developed to capitalise on digital routes to market.
Also, the e-book wave, Apple iPad and iPhone are a manifestation of the
tremendous changes, but the transformation of publishing will also come from
the systems needed to create, market, sell, fulfil, and financially manage
the deconstructed and granular product of tomorrow, which the company's
products also address.
Developing products core to publishers' evolving needs
Over the past three years the Group has invested heavily in new products:
- advance - supports publishers' infrastructure, such as production,
distribution, royalties etc
- pub2web - online multi-content platform that can host journals, books,
manuals, podcasts etc
- ICS - maximises the value of publisher's digital assets
The company also continues to invest in IngentaConnect, a major
multi-content online research platform.
Expanding internationally to drive growth
During 2009 positive results were gained from expansion in Japan, Brazil
and Germany. In Australia, following some market research and visits last
year, it was decided to push forward with the sales of our advance product.
George Lossius, Chief Executive of Publishing Technology, commented:
"Publishing across all sectors is going through huge change. The
opportunities are considerable as publishers seek to capitalise on the
digital revolution. Never has investment in the right systems and software
been so relevant; I am pleased that we have the products to support
publishers in their quest to maximise online revenues and support their
overall software needs."

PALM DESERT, Calif., March 22 -- New AirSet service, http://www.airset.com, makes it easy for anyone to manage all the important groups in their life by setting up a network of servers in the cloud.
Each user gets their own Personal Cloud Computer and can add Group Cloud Computers to their Cloud Network.
Each cloud computer has an expandable hard disk, a rich suite of web applications, and acts as a web server publishing content 24/7.
The basic service is free, supported by advertising, but at $2.95/month, members can upgrade to Personal Premium to remove ads, have added security, and expand their online storage to 5GB.
The Personal Cloud Computer also serves as a data hub, automatically synchronizing information and content across an owner's devices.

Hillcrest Labs Introduces Kylo(TM): The Web Browser for Television
- Available for the Millions of Households That Connect Their Computers to TVs - - Provides Optimized Presentation of Web Sites for Viewing From the Living Room Couch - - Free, Mozilla-based Browser Compatible With Windows or Mac OS(R) - - Ideal for Use With the Loop(TM) Pointer, but Works With Any Mouse -
ROCKVILLE, Md. and PALM DESERT, Calif., March 22 -- Today, at the DEMO Spring 2010 event, Hillcrest Labs launched the Kylo(TM) browser - a new Web browser for TV. Developed for the millions of households that connect their PCs or Macs to the TV, Kylo lets users visit any site on the Web with a browser that was specifically designed to be viewed from a distance in the family room, living room, or dorm room.
The Kylo browser is not meant to replace traditional browsers such as Internet Explorer®, Safari®, or Firefox® for use with standard computer display screens, but instead is for use on a television connected to a computer. Unlike other applications or Web sites, Kylo is not a "walled garden" of aggregated video content, but rather a true Web browser that lets users go where they want across the Internet.
"No matter how hard they try, no single set-top-box manufacturer, specialized TV widget developer, or content aggregator can match the volume of online viewing choices available on a computer," said Dan Simpkins, founder and CEO of Hillcrest Labs. "For this reason, many consumers are simply using their new HDTVs as an alternative display for their PCs or Macs. So, we've developed Kylo as a free and simple TV browser that enables them to visit any site on the Web, and makes the entire experience more enjoyable."
The Trend: Computers in the Living Room
A variety of recent findings demonstrate the growing popularity of pairing computers with televisions. For example:
-- In Forrester Research's report, "How Consumers Get Online Video to The
TV," June 9, 2009, the firm estimates that nearly 9 million homes in
the US watch at least some online video on a TV set in a typical
month.
-- In Deloitte's, "State of the Media Democracy Survey Fourth Edition,"
December 2009, the firm found that 65% of US Internet users would like
to connect their televisions to the Internet, a figure that jumped to
74% among Millennials (ages 14-26).
-- According to Pew Research's, "The Audience for Online Video- Sharing
Sites Shoots Up," July 2009, 23% of those who watch online video have
connected their computer to a TV (29% of males who watch online video
vs. 16% of females who watch online video).
-- Research conducted by One Touch Intelligence as reported in VideoNuze
on November 4, 2009, states that approximately 13.4% of Netflix "Watch
Instantly" usage is by people who connect their computer to the TV,
versus approximately 3.6% that is done by people using a Roku set-top
box.
-- In December of 2009, Hillcrest Labs also conducted its own mall
intercept survey of 200 consumers within the high-tech corridor of the
Washington DC area, and found that 34% of consumers connect their
computers to their TVs "always" or "often," while 80% were interested
in surfing the Internet on TV.
The Problems
Despite this growing trend, the first hurdle that consumers face is the physical act of connecting their computers to their TVs. For this reason, Hillcrest Labs developed a simple online guide to help people get started: http://www.hillcrestlabs.com/loop/connecting.php.
"When users connect their computer to the TV, they typically run into a series of mundane and irritating complications," said Simpkins. "Many people rely on unsightly keyboards and mice on their coffee tables or couches - often to the dismay of their spouse or roommate."
Simpkins continued, "Some Web sites have optimized settings for TV viewing, but most do not. Fonts and items of interest are generally too small, and too hard to see from across the room. In addition, conventional Web browsers tend to clutter the screen with unnecessary status bars, menus, tabs, indicators and more, since they were designed to be used from two feet away. People deserve something better when it's time to connect to the TV."
The Solution: Kylo Browser + the Loop Pointer (or Any Other Mouse)
"We've been very pleased with consumers' responses to the Loop pointer," said Chad Lucien, vice president of Freespace products at Hillcrest Labs. "With just four buttons and a scroll wheel, it's an attractive, in-air mouse for the living room."
Simpkins added, "With the Loop pointer, we felt that we had the right hardware for consumers, but that was just part of the solution. The Kylo browser lets people view any Web site from a distance, use an onscreen keyboard, and benefit from a suite of optimized features for surfing the Web from the couch."
Matt Marshall, Executive Producer of DEMO, said, "Over the years, DEMO has selected companies and launched new products that have changed entire industries. Very often simple ideas that solve real problems are the most impressive, and that's how we feel about the Kylo Web browser for TV. Hillcrest Labs has a stellar reputation for innovation, and the Kylo browser is further evidence of their ability to envision and develop compelling products."
Key features of the Kylo Web browser for TV include:
-- the ability to visit any site on the Web;
-- an onscreen keyboard that appears when there is a need to enter text,
eliminating the need for a physical keyboard; compatibility with any
physical keyboard for users who prefer to use one;
-- Fonts, cursor, and onscreen targets are larger than those in
traditional browsers;
-- easy zooming and panning;
-- the maximization of useful viewing space by hiding or removing
toolbars, tabs, buttons and indicators;
-- works with any mouse, but ideal for use with an in-air mouse such as
the Loop pointer;
-- easy bookmarking;
-- a directory of links to dozens of popular Web sites;
-- a Mozilla-based design, and
-- free, easy download and setup.
Hillcrest Laboratories (a.k.a. Hillcrest Labs) sells products to consumer electronics manufacturers, service providers, and consumers that enable unique, interactive digital media experiences for TVs and other digital media devices. Hillcrest Labs sells and licenses its pointing technology, called Freespace®, for use in a wide range of consumer devices including remote controls, PC mice, and game controllers. Companies that have licensed Hillcrest Labs' technology for use in their products include: Eastman Kodak, Logitech, Universal Electronics (UEI), and ZillionTV. For consumers, Hillcrest Labs sells the Loop(TM) pointer, an in-air mouse for TV that lets users control an onscreen cursor with a flick of the wrist and navigate the Web or their home media content on TV. Hillcrest Labs also offers the Kylo(TM) browser, a free Web browser for TV.
Hillcrest Labs has received numerous awards and recognitions including the CES Innovations Award, PC World's 100 Best Products and Greatest Tech Designs, Popular Mechanics' Editors Choice, ECN's Reader's Choice Tech, and many others. Voxofon Launches One-of-a-Kind Software That Makes Smartphones Safe for Children
DEMO Spring 2010 attendees get a first look at Voxofon Ambit
PALM DESERT, Calif., March 22 -- Voxofon, a leading provider of Mobile VoIP applications for smartphones, has introduced Voxofon Ambit at the DEMO Spring 2010 conference in Palm Desert. Ambit is essentially an eco-system that is planted on a smart device and can include any functionality according to the parents' needs and preferences.
Ambit is a mobile-based family-oriented communication software that combines a beginner social media program with parental control. It includes an application for the child's phone, a web control panel for parents, and an application for parents' phones. Parents who use the software can ensure their children are not exposed to the potential dangers of the smartphones' open window to the world. It allows parents to do the following:
-- Limit access to applications and features
-- Monitor the time and place that phone is used
-- Have dynamic and remote control of the child's smartphone from their
own smartphone in real time
-- Protect children from inappropriate contacts
-- Know where children are at all times
-- Stay in touch during busy workdays
Ambit has much to offer for children as well as their parents. With the touch of a button, kids can communicate with close friends and family on the phone or with its social media functions. Children can share photos, post updates and enjoy many other smartphone features that you are able to incorporate onto their phone.
"For most parents, giving their child a smartphone and knowing that he or she has access to every single feature, program and application at any given time is very unsettling. There are many things in the world that are completely unsuitable for children to see," says Voxofon COO Julia Goloshubina. Lights, Camera, Collaborate! Verizon Business Helps Organizations Sharpen their Focus With Managed Cisco TelePresence
Solution Enables Near-Lifelike, Face-to-Face Video Meetings to Cross Business Borders
BASKING RIDGE, N.J. and ORLANDO, Fla., March 22 -- As organizations worldwide turn to advanced collaboration tools to boost productivity and save time, Verizon Business is teaming with Cisco to deliver a new managed service that makes using immersive video meetings as simple as making a phone call.
Whether it's extending access to health care in rural areas, keeping governments and utilities running smoothly during extreme weather or working with global suppliers to close contracts, Verizon Immersive Video Conferencing Service for Cisco TelePresence(TM) enables customers to break down the barriers of space and time with the touch of a button on the telepresence system.
Immersive video goes far beyond traditional video conferencing by replicating face-to-face interaction so realistically it makes participants feel as though they are in the same room, even though they may be thousands of miles apart. The new managed offering, available in April, expands Verizon Business' existing portfolio of unified communications and collaboration solutions - from conferencing to unified messaging to video-to-the-desktop and immersive video-to-the-conference room. At the same time, Verizon is building and deepening its relationship with Cisco as the two companies, among the industry's leaders, bring advanced unified communications and collaboration offerings to market.
"As businesses expand beyond their traditional office walls, we have found that deploying advanced collaboration tools such as telepresence can have a big impact on an organization's performance," said Anthony Recine, vice president of network and communications solutions for Verizon Business. "Our new service facilitates the reservation, builds the visual bridge and manages the overall experience, so customers can zoom in on the encounter, whether they use their own facilities or an established public room."
Meetings are supported by two Verizon Business Exchanges, which run on Verizon's Private IP network infrastructure and use Cisco TelePresence technology to give users enterprise-class redundancy, reliability and security. If one exchange is interrupted, the video connection will automatically transfer to the other exchange, enabling customers to simply touch a button to re-establish service.
Customers can take advantage of complete setup and management, including pre-connected and configured video circuits, and the ability for users to make reservations online or by phone. Two Verizon Business Video Network Operations Centers will provide concierge services to set up and manage meetings round-the-clock.
Mark Weidick, vice president and general manager, TelePresence Business Unit, Cisco, said: "Verizon Business and Cisco are collaborating to bring the future of work to reality with high-quality video Cisco TelePresence collaboration for everyone, everywhere. Intercompany Cisco TelePresence gives organizations the ability to use Cisco TelePresence to meet with key suppliers, customers and partners to drive competitive advantage, faster time to market and better collaboration in their businesses."
A demonstration of immersive video capabilities is available at the Verizon booth (#923) at VoiceCon trade show, March 22-25 in Orlando.
