Inmarsat Global results
Our Inmarsat Global business delivered growth in MSS revenue
of 10.4% for the year ended 31 December 2009. Our maritime revenue was up
7.4% and was driven by strong take up and usage of our Fleet and
FleetBroadband services. Our FleetBroadband service has gained widespread
market acceptance since becoming globally available at the beginning of 2009.
We are also pleased with the progress of our new FleetBroadband 150 service
which has been successful in attracting new business from smaller vessels.
The land mobile sector revenue growth of 3.3% was mainly due
to growth in our BGAN service. BGAN revenue for the year increased by 33% as
a result of growth in subscribers and migration from older services. BGAN
ARPU strengthened in the second half of the year and reached $288 per month
in the fourth quarter. We also saw growth in revenue from our low data rate
services, showing the benefit of our collaboration with SkyWave which was
completed during the year.
Our aeronautical and leasing sectors continued to see strong
revenue growth, being up 18% and 30%, respectively, for the year. Customer
acceptance and take up of our SwiftBroadband service have been ahead of our
expectations and additions of SwiftBroadband terminals began to exceed our
established Swift 64 service in the second half of the year. In-flight
cellular services for airline passengers made good progress during the year,
but remain at an early stage in terms of revenue contribution.
Net operating costs for Inmarsat Global were down 1.9%,
contributing to growth in EBITDA of 14.8% to $495.5m.
Stratos results
Our Stratos business recorded revenue growth of 1.0% for the
year. Growth of 3.8% in MSS revenue was offset by a decline in Broadband
revenues. Although Broadband revenues were lower year over year, the
profitability and cash flow of this division has improved. Operating costs at
Stratos increased marginally by 0.7% for the year and Stratos ended the year
with growth in EBITDA of 2.2% to $100.5m.
Dividend
The dividend announced today will be paid as a second interim
dividend and will be paid in lieu of a final dividend for the 2009 financial
year. The dividend payment date will be 1 April to holders of record on 19
March 2010. Together with the interim dividend of 12.73 US$ cents paid in
October 2009, the total dividend for 2009 will be 33.36 US$ cents, an
increase of 10.0% on the total 2008 dividend.
Liquidity
The Group ended the year with a strong balance sheet and
significant available liquidity. At 31 December 2009, the Group had net
borrowings of $1,319.5m, made up of cash of $226.8m and total borrowings of
$1,546.3m. Taking into consideration our cash on hand and available but
undrawn borrowing facilities of $210.0m, the Group had total available
liquidity of $436.8m at the end of the year. During the fourth quarter we
refinanced over $600m of debt that fell due in 2012 with new debt at lower
cost and not maturing until 2017. The Group has no debt maturities in the
next twelve months.
Outlook
We believe demand from commercial and government customers is continuing
to expand, particularly for our data services. With a portfolio of broadband
services now deployed globally in all our markets, we are further able to
meet our customer needs and continue our revenue growth. In addition, we are
excited about entering the handheld satellite phone voice market and believe
this represents an attractive new growth opportunity for the future. In view
of these factors we believe the Group can continue to deliver solid revenue
growth in 2010.
Allowing for approximately $10m of planned capital expenditure
that has been deferred from 2009 to 2010, we expect our 2010 cash capital
expenditure to be in the region of $160 to $170m, including capital
expenditure for our Stratos division and deferred satellite payments.

Intelius Leads in Development of Consumer-Focused Internet Marketing Standards Working Group

BELLEVUE, Wash., March 8 -- Intelius, a leading internet information commerce retailer, today announced that they are joining, as a founding member, an independent working group, led by the Center for Democracy & Technology (CDT), to develop best practices for internet retailers when offering additional subscription products and services. Provides Students with State-of-the Art Technology in the Library, Computer Lab and Teacher's Workroom
LOS ANGELES, March 8 -- Everything Channel, a UBM company, and L.A. Works, a nonprofit, volunteer action center, are partnering to empower students at Dayton Heights Elementary School by providing much needed technology for its library, computer lab and teacher's workroom. The new technology in the library was unveiled to students at a ribbon-cutting ceremony with local and school officials this morning.
Channel@Work: Technology Makeover School Edition program, a nonprofit component of Everything Channel's XChange Solution Provider conference, brought together 50 members of the technology community and Everything Channel employees for a community service project. Volunteers installed six new computers and a printer in the school's library, one new computer in the teacher's workroom, refreshed the operating systems on 34 mac workstations in the computer lab and installed new keyboards. Additionally, program volunteers beautified several areas of the school including painting a mural created by Los Angeles-based artist, Jennifer Langstrom.
"On behalf of the City of Los Angeles, I would like to thank Everything Channel and its sponsors for investing in technology that will provide our students with the tools and resources that will enhance their educational experience," said Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa. Los Angeles Unified School District's Information Technology Division
will incorporate and manage these new workstations and the refreshed
computer lab systems, which include new keyboards supplied by the
district.

Opened in 1909, Dayton Heights Elementary is currently in its 100th school year. Designated a Title 1 school, as 91 percent of students' families have household incomes below poverty level and qualify for free lunches, the school administrators work hard to serve the 588 students in grades K-5. The focus for the year is to raise the Academic Performance Index (API) from 757 to above the state target of 800. Understanding that technology is an important tool to increase student performance, the principal is pleased to have the Channel@Work: Technology Makeover School Edition program on her campus.

Giving Goes Interactive on the Streets of New York
VIRTUAL DEMONSTRATION ILLUSTRATES THE DIFFERENCE A DONATION CAN MAKE
NEW YORK, March 8 -- A street-based innovation in charitable giving that amplifies the growing use of mobile donations by adding an interactive virtual demonstration (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWhdY-9DC0M) was launched on building sides in downtown New York by digital invention agency Sarkissian Mason, on behalf of Pathways to Housing, a New York-based agency that provides apartments and services for the homeless.
Pedestrians in downtown Manhattan encounter a video projection of a homeless man -- life-size -- on the street, asleep but shivering. A call to action to remove this virtual person via text message appears on the projection. Once a passerby interacts with his/her mobile phone, hidden software activates a separate video loop that causes a door to appear in the wall, through which the homeless person enters into a new home. A text message is then sent to the passerby's mobile phone with a code to donate to Pathways to Housing.
"Technology is dramatically changing the model of charitable giving," explained Sarkissian Mason CEO, Patrick Sarkissian. "Not only is it now easier to solicit funds through mobile codes, but the lower cost per donation has made giving more mainstream. For New Yorkers, we thought providing not only a simple way to give but also a demonstration of what their donation can do -- help get homeless individuals off the street -- was a creative and compelling way to use this new technology."
Sarkissian Mason came up with the non-traditional donation concept after re-launching Pathways to Housing's website and noticing the growing trend of charitable giving via mobile text codes. The virtual demonstrations will be projected on the sides of buildings in March in pre-selected downtown locations. Ford Offers Security Features to Protect Owners' Personal Information as Cars, Internet Converge
DEARBORN, Mich., March 8 -- With the rapid convergence of in-car technology and the Internet, Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) said today it is offering a suite of security features to protect the personal information of millions of Ford owners from the threat of computer hackers and viruses.
Protecting customers is critical as Ford moves to the forefront of in-car personal technology. Ford's popular SYNC system allows owners to connect digital media players and Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones to their vehicle's entertainment system and operate them with voice commands. The mobile phone also is a gateway to a number of Internet "cloud" services through SYNC's Traffic, Directions and Information application that provides turn-by-turn directions, business searches and more.
As a result, Ford is adapting methods and technologies most often associated with the fast-paced IT world to secure its mobile device-to-car connections from unwanted entry. Think firewalls, virus protection and password-controlled access.
"Ford Motor Company delivers highly advanced technology and entertainment platforms that, just like a consumer's laptop or smart phone, need to have security features built into it," said Jim Buczkowski, director, Ford Electronics and Electrical Systems Engineering. "Consumers want and need to know that their personal or professional information in their vehicle is specific only to them."
Recent industry data shows that more than 11 million people in the U.S. were victims of identity theft and fraudulent accounts in 2009 - with nearly a third of fraudulent accounts opened via mobile phone technology. As the use of smartphones escalates - with 174 million shipped globally in 2009 alone - concern over identity and information theft continues to rise.
Safeguards
To give customer peace of mind that their private information is protected, concealed and secure while in the vehicle, Ford is offering the following security features:
-- SYNC Firewall: With the launch of MyFord Touch for the 2011 model
year, Ford is adding WiFi "hot spot" broadcasting through SYNC using a
USB-connected broadband modem. To prevent unauthorized access and
combat piggybackers, Ford has built in firewalls to both the wireless
network and the vehicle. Using the SYNC WiFi system, a signal will be
broadcast throughout the vehicle. Default security is set to WiFi
Protected Access 2 (WPA2), requiring users to enter a randomly chosen
password to connect to the Internet. When SYNC sees a new WiFi device
for the first time, the driver must specifically allow that device to
connect, preventing piggybacking on the SYNC-provided signal.
-- SYNC Phone Pairing Protection: The one-time pairing of a phone to SYNC
is a simple process through Bluetooth wireless connectivity technology
allowing up to 12 cell phones to be recognized by system. The
short-range nature of Bluetooth technology makes SYNC's connection to
a paired cell phone's stored information - contact lists and address
books - possible only when the phone is inside the vehicle. If there's
no phone in the cabin, the wireless connection is broken and there's
no evidence of stored data for invaders to collect.
-- Encrypted Jukebox: Ford's onboard "Jukebox," which allows customers to
download music onto a hard drive, has built-in digital rights
management and encryption features. The encryption is unique to each
navigation unit, which means the hard drive can't be removed, inserted
into another vehicle's navigation system and accessed. In addition,
hackers can't access the drive from another computer and enjoy those
favorite tunes. Customers don't have to worry about someone hopping
in their car sight unseen, plugging in a USB stick and doing a quick
download of their personal music library, either. The Ford
proprietary encryptions protect any songs saved to the system's
digital jukebox - which can hold up to 2,400 tracks - from being moved
or copied to another device.
-- "Home" Protection: Ford also gives customers with voice-activated
navigation the ability to protect their programmed destinations and
addresses - such as "Home" - from unauthorized eyes. A valet mode can
be engaged on the system that locks all programmed destinations from
view unless a 4-digit PIN is entered with each ignition key cycle.
MyFord Touch will also offer a valet mode.
-- Engine Immobilizer: To help protect the vehicle, the mobile hub for
all this personal information, Ford depends on SecuriLock. This
patented passive anti-theft system prevents the engine from starting
unless a coded ignition key is used. With SecuriLock, a wireless
radio-frequency transmission is required to transfer an electronic
code between a transponder in the key to the vehicle's ignition
system. There are 72 million-billion possible codes so every Ford
vehicle sold worldwide for the next 10 billion years will come with a
unique code.
-- Securicode keyless entry. The Ford-exclusive keypad gives customers
the ability to lock their key fob in the car if they desire (consider
not having to worry about losing the expensive fob when biking a
mountain trail, sunning on the beach or jamming at a rock concert).
Securicode works on a secure 5-digit code. The latest iteration of
the keypad employs similar touch-sensitive technology, processors and
algorithms used by the iPod and iPhone.

Verizon Wireless 4G LTE Network Testing Promises Significantly Faster Speeds Than Current 3G Networks
Available to 100 Million Americans in 25 to 30 U.S. Markets by End of 2010
IRVINE, Calif., March 8 -- Verizon Wireless announced today that its 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) network field trials in the U.S. have demonstrated wireless data speeds that are significantly faster than today's 3G network speeds. Trials in Boston and Seattle indicate the network is capable of peak download speeds of 40 to 50 megabits per second (Mbps) and peak upload speeds of 20 to 25 Mbps. The speeds are significantly faster than Verizon Wireless and other wireless providers' current or promised 3G network speeds.
Verizon Wireless has been testing its forthcoming 4G LTE network in both Boston and Seattle since August. Successful data calls involved streaming video; file uploads and downloads, and Web browsing, as well as calls with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) to enable voice transmissions over the LTE network. Verizon Wireless engineers report LTE average data rates of 5-12 Mbps on the downlink and 2-5 Mbps on the uplink in real-world environments and will offer Verizon Wireless customers mobile browsing speeds comparable to customers' current, typical online Internet experience.
