New Cell Site Means Clearer Reception, Fewer Dropped Calls
SCHAUMBURG, Ill., March 3 -- Verizon Wireless has activated a new cell site in Will County that expands network coverage, enabling more customers in the area to use their wireless phones concurrently to make calls; send and receive email and text, picture and video messages; access the Internet; view high-quality videos; and download music, games and ringtones, while enjoying clearer reception and fewer dropped calls.
The new cell site, which is equipped with a permanent backup generator for times of emergency, expands Verizon Wireless' voice and data network in Mokena from La Porte Road in the north to Steger Road in the south, and from Spencer Road in the west to US Route 45 in the east.

Washington State Receives $75,000 Grant to Train Teachers to Use Verizon's Thinkfinity.org Educational Web Site
Verizon Thinkfinity Offers Array of Free Educational Resources for Teachers, Students, Parents, After-School Programs
SEATTLE, March 3 -- The Washington Ed Tech Development Center has received a $75,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation to continue to raise awareness about the free educational resources available on Verizon Thinkfinity and to train teachers to use those resources. The grant was announced Wednesday (March 3) at the Teacher Librarian Summit of the Northwest Council for Computers in Education Conference at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle.
Verizon Thinkfinity (http://www.thinkfinity.org) contains thousands of free, engaging educational resources, including K-12 lesson plans, in-class activities and videos that can be found quickly and searched by grade level, keyword or subject. These resources are aligned to state and national standards and offer K-12 resources across eight academic disciplines, from science to English to mathematics.
"Since we entrust teachers with our most precious resource, we have a responsibility to give them the best tools to help them do the great work of educating our children," said Lin Fogg, Verizon director of external affairs for Washington. "Verizon Thinkfinity.org opens up a new realm of possibilities for teachers to find ways to engage and enlighten their students."
Anne Anderson, director of the Ed Tech Development Center, said: "These funds will go a long way toward helping Washington teachers find quality content and make learning fun. Washington's Educational Technology Support Centers are now geared up to make that happen."

W.J. O'Neil Teams Up With PPMG to Save Energy Costs at Landmark Detroit Building
Updated energy systems at One Detroit Center save 24% on utility costs
LIVONIA, Mich., March 3 -- John Guardiola, Vice President of Engineering at Portfolio Property Management Global (PPMG), knew exactly who to call to update the energy systems at the downtown Detroit landmark building, One Detroit Center: Joe Colleran and his team of experts at W.J. O'Neil Company.
After an exhaustive evaluation of the energy requirements of the building, Guardiola had determined changes in two areas could produce significant energy savings: an upgrade of the existing energy management system, and the addition of Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) on all motors for air handling systems.
The W.J. O'Neil team began by installing a state-of-the-art web-based energy management system. Every piece of equipment in the HVAC system is controlled by the system and because it's web based, monitoring can be done from a remote location and changes can be made easily and quickly. The result is a greater efficiency with instantaneous information from a building management system.
Next, the Variable Frequency Drives were installed on all the major air handling systems. "With an advanced control strategy we were able to optimize the use of all systems," said Colleran, "resulting in considerable energy savings."
"Remarkably," said Guardiola, "all of the work was done with zero interruption of tenants."
The project took eight months and the savings were substantial. "We have experienced an overall 24% savings on all of our major utilities," said Guardiola. "The new system allows us to maintain tenant comfort while at the same time save energy."
Environmental projects like the One Detroit Center are the specialty of W.J. O'Neil. LITTLETON, Colo., March 3 -- tw telecom inc. (NASDAQ:TWTC), today announced that its subsidiary tw telecom holdings inc. (the "Company") has commenced a cash tender offer, on the terms and subject to the conditions set forth in the Company's Offer to Purchase and Consent Solicitation Statement dated March 3, 2010 (the "Offer to Purchase"), for any and all of its outstanding 9 1/4 % senior notes due 2014 (the "Notes").
The Company is also soliciting consents to certain proposed amendments to the indenture governing the Notes to, among other things, eliminate substantially all of the restrictive covenants and certain events of default, modify the redemption notice period from 30 days to three days, and eliminate or modify related provisions contained in the indenture.
The tender offer documents more fully set forth the terms of the tender offer and consent solicitation. The Notes and other information relating to the tender offer are listed in the table below:

The Company will pay accrued and unpaid interest on all Notes tendered and accepted for payment in the tender offer from the last interest payment date to, but not including, the date on which the Notes are purchased.
Tendered Notes may be withdrawn at any time on or prior to 5:00 p.m., New York City time, on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, unless extended by the Company (the "Withdrawal Deadline").
Holders may not tender their Notes without delivering their consents to the proposed amendments to the indenture and the Notes and may not deliver their consents without tendering their Notes pursuant to the tender offer. The proposed amendments require the approval of a majority of the aggregate principal amount of the outstanding Notes. If so approved, however, the proposed amendments will not become operative until after the Company has paid the consent payment to all holders that have validly tendered (and not validly revoked) consents on or prior to the Consent Date. Any tender of the Notes prior to the Withdrawal Deadline may be validly withdrawn and consents may be validly revoked at any time prior to the Withdrawal Deadline, but not thereafter except to the extent that the Company is required by law to provide withdrawal rights.
The Company has reserved the right (and expects) to accept for purchase all Notes validly tendered prior to the Consent Date on a date that is promptly after the Consent Date but prior to the Expiration Time (the "Early Settlement Date"). The Early Settlement Date is expected to be Wednesday, March 17, 2010. On the Early Settlement Date, the Company will also pay accrued and unpaid interest from the last interest payment date for the Notes up to, but not including, the Early Settlement Date on the Notes accepted for purchase.

I've longed talked to Western Digital about their thoughts on the SSD market. The story has changed from something like "we are committed to magnetic storage" to "we're timing the market," after the purchase of SiliconSystems. SiliconSystems made SSDs in the form of Compact Flash for the industrial and business market. They didn't make true consumer SSD products, but they weren't traditional CF disks that you would find in a high end DSLR.
Today, Western Digital has announced the SiliconEdge Blue line of SSDs. They range in size from 64GB to 256GB and, based on reports, is using the newer JMicron controller. We like when companies break out of their niche when a newer (and better) technology comes around so we're glad to see WD step up to provide SSDs to the consumer market.
WD set some crazy pricing on these drives. The 128GB is suggested to be $529. We highly doubt that you will purchase this drive for that price. Expect it to be in-line with something like the V Series from Kingston, which uses similar parts.
Deltacom Awarded $9.4 Million in Federal Stimulus Funding to Deliver High Speed Broadband Access to Eastern Tennessee
HUNTSVILLE, Ala., March 3 -- ITC^DeltaCom, Inc. The new network will enable broadband access for a number of entities including educational and healthcare institutions and allow local Internet providers to connect to Deltacom's network for intercity transport.

Optelecom-NKF Wins a Major Traffic Management Contract in South Carolina, USA
GERMANTOWN, Md., March 3 -- Optelecom-NKF, Inc. (NASDAQ:OPTC), a leading global supplier of advanced video surveillance equipment and the manufacturer of Siqura® surveillance solutions, today announced the award of a $503,000 traffic management equipment contract from Temple, Inc., a regional systems distributor based in Decatur, Alabama, USA.
Under the contract, Optelecom-NKF will supply Temple with Siqura 9000 series fiber components to support the expansion of South Carolina Department of Transportation's (SCDOT) Intelligent Transport System (ITS) to remote areas of the state.

South Carolina's extensive traffic management system is expanding to cover rural areas. The system's network of traffic cameras, automated recorders, and sophisticated sensors provide real-time information on rapidly changing traffic volumes and speeds, real-time weather data, and evacuation route information in the event of a hurricane.
The system also utilizes variable message sign (VMS) technology and links to an array of media, such as the internet and radio broadcasts, to keep the public up-to-date on road congestion and travel conditions. The information collected by the system is transmitted to a central traffic control room in Columbia, South Carolina, where operators monitor and react to situations by adjusting VMS alerts and notifying first responders and authorities, as necessary.
