First-ever central bank-backed digital currency can accelerate the digitization of transactions, infuse trust in payments systems, and drive greater financial inclusion
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., Dec. 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Omidyar Network announced today a for-profit investment in eCurrency Mint (eCM), a Dublin-based company that has pioneered a new technology that enables central banks to issue digital fiat currency, called eCurrency. eCurrency is different from the various forms of private sector digital value available today because it is issued by a central bank and has the same legal and monetary status as notes and coins.
eCurrency is more than a ledger. It is an end-to-end solution that combines hardware, software, and cryptographic security protocols to enable a country's central bank to not only issue digital fiat currency, but also fully manage its operation, including the ability to monitor its movement through payments systems in near-real time.

How it works
Once the technology is acquired by a country's central bank, eCurrency can only be minted by the central bank in an offline process. Each unit of eCurrency consists of a "cryptocomplex": A self-contained security instrument made up of many layers of security technology uniquely bound together to ensure eCurrency cannot be counterfeited or compromised. After deployment, eCurrency's security features can be updated real-time, in order to stay ahead of counterfeiting threats.
Once each unit of eCurrency has been created by the central bank, it is transported in digital form within a secure storage device to payments systems, such as banks and other financial providers, using the same existing delivery mechanisms available today for notes and coins. Those institutions then load eCurrency into their systems, making it available publicly for transacting.
Because each unit of eCurrency is equipped with a self-aware, unique identifier, the central bank can monitor the movement of eCurrency through payments systems in near real-time and continuously add up the money supply to ensure that the amount issued is the same as the amount in circulation at all times.
Economic benefits
There is a large body of evidence indicating that shifting to digital transactions boosts economic growth. A Moody's study shows that electronic payments added US$983 billion or 0.17 percentage points annually to economic growth across 51 countries that accounted accounted for 93 percent of global GDP between 2008 and 2012. The study found this was the equivalent of creating 1.2 million additional jobs. During that period, the report estimates electronic payments added 0.8 percent to GDP in developing economies and 0.3 percent to GDP in developed economies.(i)
A research study by Citigroup and Imperial College estimates that 10 percent growth in the adoption of digital money across 90 countries will bring 220 million more people into the formal financial sector, add US$1 trillion of new flows in the formal economy, and lead to US$150 billion of additional consumer spending and US$100 billion more in tax collections.(ii) eCurrency can help accelerate the migration from paper-based transactions to digital transactions, solving issues currently hampering its growth, such as payments systems interoperability.

RackHD API Available to Developers
RackHD software offers hardware management and orchestration (M&O) that automates discovery, description, provisioning and programming across a broad range of servers today and a roadmap to add networking devices in the future.
Modern data centers are a mix of multi-vendor storage, networking and servers with an increasing variety of Commercial Off-the-Shelf (COTS) hardware being used for powering hyper-scale use cases. Installing low-level operating systems or updating firmware and BIOS across numerous devices is already a cumbersome manual task for data center engineers and becomes orders of magnitude more difficult and costly at hyper-scale. RackHD was created to automate and simplify these fundamental tasks across a broad range of data center hardware.
Developers can use the RackHD API as a component in a larger orchestration system or create a user interface for managing hardware services regardless of the underlying hardware in place. It is designed to help organizations accelerate deployment of modern (Platform 3) applications that rely on large numbers of commodity servers and heterogeneous infrastructure.
Today RackHD supports a wide variety of Intel(®) processor-based datacenter servers and discovery and monitoring for switches. A RackHD project community has been established through EMC {code}, the Community Onramp for Developer Enablement, to encourage contributions that will extend heterogeneous device support as well as to develop useful new features for the Software-Defined data center. CoprHD Community Releases CoprHD 2.4
CoprHD is open source storage automation software that centralizes and transforms multi-vendor storage into a simple and extensible platform. The CoprHD Community made its first official release with CoprHD 2.4 to include new features, projects, community contributors and a new licensing switch to Apache License, Version 2.0. The new release expands the scope of CoprHD to include EMC® ECS(TM) object storage, as well as a new REST API for EMC XtremIO® 4.0 software. Intel and Oregon State University joined the CoprHD Community as the newest contributors. Intel is leading a project to integrate Keystone with CoprHD, allowing the use of the Cinder API and/or the CoprHD API to provide block storage services. This feature allows organizations to provide a single storage management interface with CoprHD for their OpenStack services.
In an effort to further expand the CoprHD ecosystem, the CoprHD Community has developed a southbound Software Development Kit (SDK) designed to allow storage vendors and other third parties to more easily add support for other storage systems to CoprHD. Students at Oregon State University are developing the first plugin using the SouthBound SDK for a new EMC ScaleIO® driver. This will eventually replace the ScaleIO driver in the current release and will serve as a test case for further development of the SouthBound SDK.
EMC also announced a new release of its REX-Ray storage orchestration engine. REX-Ray is an open source project driven by EMC {code} that delivers persistent storage access for container runtimes including those provided by Docker, Mesos and others. It is designed to enable advanced storage functionality across common storage, virtualization and cloud platforms.
The 0.3 release contains a variety of new updates through community contribution including expanded storage platform support for GCE (Google Compute Engine) as well as EMC Isilon® and EMC VMAX® storage systems. Additionally, REX-Ray has been updated with a pre-emptive volume mount function that enables the host to reassign mounted volumes from non-responsive hosts. This ensures applications maintain access to persistent storage.

Raritan's New Branch Circuit Monitoring System Provides Fresh Insights on Data Center Power Capacity

SOMERSET, N.J., Dec. 7, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Raritan, a leading provider of intelligent data center management and rack power distribution solutions, today introduced an all new Branch Circuit Monitoring (BCM) system that provides real-time views of electrical capacity and power usage in colocation and other data centers. The new system supports real-time branch circuit monitoring at the panelboard, floor power distribution unit, remote power panel or overhead busway.
To monitor power consumption upstream from IT equipment racks, the new BCM leverages the technology of Raritan's third-generation intelligent rack PDUs. Visibility into the entire power chain is vital to managing data center health. For example, if a circuit's current approaches a breaker's limit, the BCM sends an alert to staff who can act to prevent a cascading failure. The BCM is also modular, meaning it can be scaled as and when needed, making it more cost effective than competitive solutions.

The data is remotely accessible via a web-based interface, or locally on a high-resolution color display or tablet.
The system can easily be configured by uploading the panel schedule via USB stick, thus eliminating manual input errors. Information gathered by the BCM system can be shared with a building management system (BMS) or data center infrastructure management (DCIM) power monitoring software, such as from Raritan partner, Sunbird Software. The BCM also supports environmental sensors for monitoring temperature and humidity.
The new easy-to-install modular system consists of power meter controllers (PMC), power metering modules (PMM), current transformers (CTs), and a variety of enclosures. During installation, the system auto-senses the direction of CT installation and adjusts orientation to prevent costly mistakes requiring reinstallation. There is no disruption to existing services because the current transformers can be snapped around live circuits without power to equipment racks being cut off.
