There is an ever-increasing level of administrative overhead and regulatory exposure for today's investigator sites. In part, this is due to sites taking on more trials at a time when trials are becoming increasingly complex.

Study Coordinators get more out of their day with several time-saving features. Among them is the highly intuitive calendar building tool, which can be used to define even a complex, 50-visit protocol calendar with 25 procedures in just about half an hour. Based on the protocol calendar, the patient visit calendar is then automatically populated with the planned visit dates upon enrollment.

For Clinical Trials Managers, Allegro CTMS@Site offers more control over the financial viability of their trials. The system comes with a suite of business development tools including a full-featured contact management database, integrated email, and task management tools, all of which help manage and track the contracting process with CROs and sponsors. The six-step, wizard-based budget creation tool is integrated with the protocol calendar as well as the institutional charge master which means that managers can create fast and accurate budgets in just minutes. Managers can determine study feasibility and negotiate more effectively when they have accurate budgets prior to study startup. For active trials, payments are received more quickly because invoices are automatically populated with the patient milestones that have occurred.

Principal Investigators get more time for their clinical practice and to do research with CTMS@Site, in part because they have fewer worries about regulatory and billing compliance due to their staff having the proper tools and safeguards in place. In addition, the system brings timely information on their trials to the investigator with customizable dashboards and automatic email notifications. For example, dashboards make it easy to see actual versus planned recruitment or the number of serious adverse events, at a glance. Ford Developers Look to Use Google Prediction API to Optimize Energy Efficiency; Research Presented at Google I/O

Ford researchers are harnessing the power of cloud computing, analytics and Google innovation to identify technologies that could make tomorrow's vehicles smart enough to independently change how they perform to deliver optimal driveability and fuel efficiency.

Ford researchers are applying Google's Prediction API to more than two years of their own predictive driver behavior research and analysis. The Google API can convert information such as historical driving data - where a driver has traveled and at what time of day for example - into useful real-time predictions, such as where a driver is headed at the time of departure.

"The Google Prediction API allows us to utilize information that an individual driver creates over time and make that information actionable," said Ryan McGee, technical expert, Vehicle Controls Architecture and Algorithm Design, Ford Research and Innovation. "Between Google Prediction and our own research, we are discovering ways to make information work for the driver and help deliver optimal vehicle performance."

How it works

Ford is hoping to use these types of cloud-stored data to enable a vehicle essentially to optimize itself and perform in the best manner determined by a predicted route.

This week, Ford researchers are presenting a conceptual case of how the Google Prediction API could alter the performance of a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle at the 2011 Google I/O developer conference. In this theoretical situation, here's how the technology could work:

    --  After a vehicle owner opts in to use the service, an encrypted driver
        data usage profile is built based on routes and time of travel. In
        essence, the system learns key information about how the driver is using
        the vehicle
    --  Upon starting the vehicle, Google Prediction will use historical driving
        behavior to evaluate given the current time of day and location to
        develop a prediction of the most likely destination and how to optimize
        driving performance to and from that location
    --  An on-board computer might say, "Good morning, are you going to work?"
        If the driver is in fact going to work, the response would be, "Yes,"
        and then an optimized powertrain control strategy would be created for
        the trip. A predicted route of travel could include an area restricted
        to electric-only driving. Therefore, the plug-in hybrid could program
        itself to optimize energy usage over the total distance of the route in
        order to preserve enough battery power to switch to all-electric mode
        when traveling within the EV-only zone

"Once the destination is confirmed, the vehicle would have instant access to a variety of real-time information so it can optimize its performance, even against factors that the driver may not be aware of, such as an EV-only zone," said McGee.

Because of the large amount of computing power necessary to make the predictions and optimizations, an off-board system that connects through the cloud is currently necessary.

What's next

Knowing that driver behavior and patterns correlate to overall fuel and energy efficiency during the vehicle ownership experience, Ford researchers are committed to increasing their understanding of driver behavior behind the wheel and to developing accurate protocols to predict it.

"Anticipating the driver's destination is just one way that Ford is investigating predicting driver behavior," said McGee. "This information can ultimately be used to optimize vehicle performance attributes such as fuel efficiency and driveability."

The Google Prediction API is one example of a technology that is helping Ford open doors to new predictive possibilities powered by the cloud.

"Ford already offers cloud-based services through Ford SYNC®, but those services thus far have been used for infotainment, navigation and real-time traffic purposes to empower the driver," said Johannes Kristinsson, system architect, Vehicle Controls Architecture and Algorithm Design, Ford Research and Innovation. "This technology has the potential to empower our vehicles to anticipate the driver's needs."

Helping drivers comply with regulations could be among those needs. For example, the French government is considering creating zones that would mandate vehicles have lower emissions.  Cities such as London, Berlin, and Stockholm already have such zones.

If a vehicle were able to predict exactly when it might be entering such a zone, it could optimize itself in a way to comply with regulations, such as switching the engine to all-electric mode.

Work is now underway to study the feasibility of incorporating other variables such as driver style and habits into the optimization process so Ford can further optimize vehicle control systems, allowing car and driver to work together to maximize energy efficiency.

Integral to this next-step work is personal information security, an issue that is of the utmost importance to Ford. "We realize that the nature of this research includes the use of personal data and location awareness, something we are committed to protecting for our customers in everything we do," notes Kristinsson. "A key component of this project is looking at how to develop secure personal profiles that will ensure appropriate levels of protection and specific data use only by the driver and the vehicle to deliver the best driving experience.

California Social Networking Bill Will Stall Online Innovation

NetChoice outlines dangerous consequences of California legislation to regulate social networks

SACRAMENTO, Calif., May 10, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Proposed legislation (S.B. 242) considered today by the California Senate Judiciary Committee would impose restrictive curbs on existing and future social networks that will have damaging implications extending far beyond legislators' intentions.

"The bill's sponsors started out with the noble goal of protecting children, but recent amendments transform the legislation into a boogeyman that will scare away innovation," said Steve DelBianco, executive director of NetChoice. "The current proposal will create a major regulatory minefield for social networking services while failing to provide meaningful protection for minors."

As recently amended, S.B. 242 would go far beyond its stated aim of protecting children:

    --  The bill would chill free expression by requiring social networks to
        remove any statements about an individual that include their picture,
        video, or place of employment (regardless of age) upon that individual's
        request. This move would eliminate social networks' newfound power to
        generate positive social change and open public debate.
    --  The bill would affect social networking websites that knowingly serve
        minors with specific safeguards and educational guidance.  For fear of
        lawsuits, these websites may stop asking the age of new users and
        offering specific measures to protect minors.
    --  Under S.B. 242's definition of social networking sites, even school-run
        social websites would be subject to new restrictions and huge civil
        liabilities.  Websites run by high school sports clubs, higher education
        student aid forums and online health information providers would all be
        subject to automatic penalties of $10,000 for every technical violation
        of the law. The threat of legal action could easily lead to the
        elimination of these free public services.

"Combining mandatory penalties with loosely worded legislation that attempts to manage the future of Internet innovation is a recipe for disaster," said DelBianco. "In their rush to protect children, we must demand that legislators craft targeted solutions that provide meaningful protection without unjustified restrictions on Internet innovation and free expression."

Study Shows RealAge's Online Health Assessment Successfully Motivated Employees to Change Lifestyle Behaviors with Minimal Interaction

SAN DIEGO, May 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- A recent study funded by the National Institutes of Health has shown that online health site RealAge.com successfully motivated employees to initiate and adhere to a health-management plan resulting in significant waist-size reductions. These results were produced by only one e-mail interaction inviting them to take the RealAge Test, a health assessment that determines a person's risk of mortality based on a variety of factors. The findings are published in the May issue of the American Journal of Public Health.

Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago conducted the study from a pool of 423 people ages 40 to 68. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of three groups: an online RealAge Test intervention; a computerized health assessment combined with an offline coaching intervention; and a control group that received printed health materials.

Subjects in the RealAge group received only one e-mail message from the researchers, prompting them to take the patented RealAge Test, a free health assessment that calculates the biological age of a person's body based on lifestyle, genetics, and medical history. The subjects had no further interaction with the study investigators.

The study findings show that although the coaching group had different benefits, only the RealAge group had a significant reduction in waist circumference -- an objective indicator of overall health: The fat that enlarges waists is linked to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, liver inflammation and more. The waist changes were seen within 6 months and maintained at 1 year.

"It is truly remarkable that the RealAge group, with much less intervention and at no cost to the employer, achieved the difficult, important outcome of a sustained reduction in waist size," said Keith Roach, MD, chief medical officer at RealAge. "This study shows that RealAge has significant benefit to a worker population, despite minimal effort by employers" -- a key finding in an environment of rising healthcare costs to employers and low adherence to health management by workers.

RealAge.com also provides all test takers with a personalized Grow Younger Plan that explains how to fix factors that speed up aging and reinforces factors that improve health and slow aging.

The RealAge Test and resulting recommendations were based on more than 500 clinical trials combined with statistical information from the U.S. Census Bureau, the Centers for Disease Control, and the National Center for Health Statistics to determine the risk of mortality from a variety of health-related factors.

RIVERSIDE, Calif., May 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Bourns, Inc., a leading manufacturer and supplier of electronic components, today announced a new combined torque and angle sensor designed for Electric Power Assisted Steering Applications (EPAS) and other automotive systems. The new combined sensor provides torque and steering angle measurement in a single package, replacing two discrete sensors for significant space and cost savings. Based on Bourns' Hall Effect (HE) non-clockspring torque sensor technology, the combined sensor uses driver input to measure the steering torque while simultaneously converting the rotation speed and direction of the steering wheel. The torque portion of the sensor is designed specifically for EPAS, and the steering angle signal can be used in a variety of automotive systems including Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Advanced Front Lighting Systems (AFLS), Navigation, and Assisted Parking Systems.

The new joint product demonstration showed how activities taking place in a system of record such as NetSuite - finance users generating invoices, product shipment fulfillment, and sales reps placing orders - can be "socialized" and transmitted as an "activity stream" to Yammer's enterprise social networking platform. This integration marks the debut of Yammer Activity Streams, which are intended to aggregate activity stories across a wide variety of enterprise applications. By importing content from NetSuite, Yammer Activity Streams can provide users with an instant snapshot of NetSuite activity inside Yammer, where they can easily share and discuss with colleagues.

The new offering brings together two technology advances. In NetSuite, a new SuiteApp called SuiteSocial allows users to automatically 'socialize' business data for use with social networking and collaboration applications. With SuiteSocial, users can follow records of interest in NetSuite, and as important activities and updates occur, SuiteSocial content is automatically generated which may then be syndicated to an external social stream or feed. The NetSuite SuiteSocial content is integrated and presented to Yammer users as activity stories in Yammer's new Activity Streams. Activity Streams are currently displayed as a separate feed in Yammer and in the future, the most relevant stories will be elevated into the user's primary feed.

Verizon Hails Public-Private Partnership to Aid Emergency Preparedness in New York City

WASHINGTON, May 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ivan Seidenberg, federal agency officials, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg and representatives from AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile announced on Tuesday (May 10) plans to deploy the Personal Localized Alerting Network in New York City by December 31, more than three months earlier than the April 2012 deployment date set by the federal government.

The announcement of PLAN, also known as the Commercial Mobile Alert Service, included Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski and Craig Fugate, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The FCC established PLAN to allow participating wireless providers to send emergency alerts as textlike messages to their subscribers. The network will allow FEMA to accept and aggregate alerts from authorized federal, state and local government officials, and then send the alerts over a secure interface to participating wireless providers, which will distribute the alerts to subscribers.

"This project is a great example of the government and private sectors coming together to accomplish something for the public good," Seidenberg said. "Verizon supported the legislation behind this initiative, and we have been involved at every step of the way in developing the rules that will make this service work."

Verizon will also have PLAN-capable handsets available by the end of 2011.

I think that if they integrate this into their products as they plan to successfully, there's going to be some very compelling reasons to use it. If they can make communication accross Windows\Outlook, Lync, Xbox Live, and Windows Phone seamless, they'll be ahead of the existing voicechat game. Another example of Microsoft showing up late to the party, but being the one to bring all of the good booze.

OnStar FMV 'Vehicle Selector' launches on OnStar.com and Facebook

DETROIT, May 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- With the consumer launch of OnStar's new retail product, OnStar FMV (For My Vehicle), this summer, excitement is growing surrounding the expanded availability of the telematics service for more than 90 million vehicles on the road.

OnStar FMV is a rearview mirror that delivers the core features that have made OnStar the most trusted and popular in-vehicle safety, security and convenience service on the market today, with more than 6 million active subscribers.

To help consumers determine whether their current vehicle is compatible with OnStar FMV, OnStar has launched an online compatibility tool called "Vehicle Selector". The tool allows users to enter in basic vehicle information, like make, model and year, to see if the upcoming retail product will work on their vehicle. "Vehicle Selector" is available at OnStar.com and the OnStar Facebook page.

To date, OnStar has validated 90 million vehicles manufactured in the last 10 years as compatible with OnStar FMV - up from 55 million when the product was announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in January

Plans Call for Addition of New Cell Sites and the Expansion of Backhaul in 2011 as Part of Initiative to Drive 4G Speeds, Increase Wireless Network Capacity

MANCHESTER, N.H., May 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T* today announced plans to add and upgrade cell sites across New Hampshire as part of its 2011 initiative to deliver the nation's most-advanced mobile broadband experience.

The New Hampshire network enhancements are part of AT&T's planned $19-billion investment in its national wireless and wireline networks and other capital projects in 2011. The investment will support plans to enable 4G speeds over an increasing portion of the country throughout the year, including the planned initial launch of LTE beginning mid-year and the deployment of enhanced backhaul connections that enable 4G speeds**.

The 2011 investment will also support the build and upgrade of thousands of cell sites nationwide designed to increase network speed, coverage and reliability for both mobile voice and broadband services. AT&T also plans to install additional radio "carriers" at more than 30,000 cell sites nationally this year, enabling new layers of spectrum capacity to carry larger volumes of mobile broadband traffic. This additional capacity enables AT&T to support rising mobile data traffic volumes, which have increased more than 8,000 percent over the past four years.

Today's announcement builds on the momentum established during AT&T's 2010 wireless investment, when it added nearly 25 new cell sites in New Hampshire and upgraded 75 existing sites to mobile broadband. From 2008 to 2010, AT&T invested nearly $60 million in its New Hampshire wireline and wireless networks.
