First 40nm baseband chip to support China's 3G standard

SHANGHAI and SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 27, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Spreadtrum Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq: SPRD; "Spreadtrum") and TSMC (TWSE: 2330, NYSE: TSM) today unveiled their achievement on the first commercialized 40nm Time Division - Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (TD-SCDMA) baseband processor. First time silicon success for this baseband processor was achieved by the two companies jointly optimizing design, process and manufacturing. The chip is in initial production at Fab 12, one of TSMC's GIGAFAB(TM) facilities in Taiwan.

The new processor supports TD-SCDMA and other telecommunication 3.75G to 2G specifications including High-Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA), Enhanced Data GSM Environment (EDGE), General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) and Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). It also features up to a 2.8Mbps bandwidth that is more than one hundred times faster than the 2G standard.

The baseband processor leverages TSMC's 40nm low power (40LP) process technology to extend battery lifetime in mobile telecommunication. The 40LP process also supports other leakage-sensitive applications such as application processor, portable consumer and wireless connectivity devices.

Wireless Signal Super-Receivers for Vehicles Developed Using Unique Technology

DETROIT, Jan. 26, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Whether driving through a mountain pass or a concrete canyon today's on-the-go consumer shouldn't have to worry about wireless signal strength, and they won't when they are behind the wheel of the 2011 GMC Yukon Denali.

In an era where cars and trucks double as online data and information portals, General Motors has created a first-of-its-kind gigantic signal-testing facility to keep data, cellular and other signals active in areas where wireless signal strength is limited.  The Yukon Denali is one of the first vehicles to benefit from the technology, which looks like something out of a sci-fi movie.

GM created the world's first "vehicle-sized electronically modulated spherical near-field antenna testing system," or ATS, in partnership with transmission tech giant SATIMO SA (Societe d'Applications Technologiques de l'Imagerie Micro-Onde SA). Resembling one-half of the St. Louis Gateway Arch, the $750,000 ATS beams signals from 103 discrete probes down to a vehicle on a rotating platform.

The data is used to optimize satellite antenna design and placement on GMC and other GM vehicles. 

"There are only two other vehicle antenna validation systems like this anywhere in the world," said Janalee Graham, who runs ATS "arch" testing for GM. "And ours was the first.

"The ATS system lets us test the antenna systems on the GMC Yukon Denali in virtually every possible real-world condition," said Graham. "What would take other automakers days of testing can be done in minutes with this system." 

Graham confesses to dragging her family to remote parts of the country to spot test XM satellite radio and OnStar signals on GMC trucks and SUVs.

"They've been unwittingly pulled into my antenna obsession on several occasions while traveling." 

What's her favorite arch? 

"I've been to the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and even the golden arches," she said, "but GM's SATIMO ATS arch is my favorite."

Facebook Starting To Use Your Content In Ads

Remember that all the content you post to Facebook can be used by them? You did know this, right? It seems that Facebook will start using content posted by its members (meaning you) in advertisements. You don't get any money out of the deal, though.

Sponsored Stories solves that problem for advertisers by plucking valuable content from user news feeds and making it more readily noticeable to others.

The Sponsored Stories, which kicked off yesterday for Facebook's "premium" advertisers, will be labeled and viewable only to the content creator's friends, Facebook noted. The service will respect a person's privacy settings. However, Facebook users won't be able to opt out of the service. That's somewhat surprising, since Facebook users can modify their inclusion in the company's existing Social Ads by letting their social actions be includedin a marketer's ad on the site and be shown to friends--or opt out.


Stuff like this should always be opt-in.

Lippis/Ixia testing concludes Force10's access switch delivers up to 70% lower latency than competitors' products in data center network tests

SAN JOSE, Calif., Jan. 26, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Force10 Networks, Inc., a global technology leader, today announced that its S-Series(TM) S4810 top-of-rack (ToR) access switch demonstrated as much as 5% to 70% lower latency than comparable switches in a 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) configuration based on a network performance and power test. The test was conducted by independent analyst and publisher Nick Lippis of The Lippis Report and Ixia, a leader in converged IP network test solutions.

AT&T Shares Measures for Smooth Transition to the New Internet Protocol

DALLAS, Jan. 26, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T* today said it is providing consulting services to help businesses of all sizes transition to Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6). The company also outlined the steps it has taken to make its own network and services ready to make the shift to IPv6.

AT&T is actively consulting with companies in response to the exploding growth in mobile applications, machine-to-machine computing, and peer-to-peer applications that is creating a need for IP addresses that goes well beyond the 4.3 billion addresses currently available with today's internet protocol version (IPv4).

"In the not-too-distant future, everything from mobile phones and PCs to automobiles, gaming stations and home appliances will be assigned its own unique Internet IPv6 addresses," said Dale McHenry, vice president of Enterprise Data Networks at AT&T. "Each of these devices will be trying to connect over IPv6 to corporate URLs," he said. "Businesses need to realize the importance of early action and start planning their transition," said McHenry.

Drawing on its extensive experience meeting IPv6 requirements for the US government, AT&T is offering a full suite of consulting services to assist customers with IPv6 readiness and transition - including webcasts, (tune into the webinar Take Control of your IPv6 Transition), providing access to its IPv6-enabled Proof of Concept Labs, and for-fee engagements that help companies establish an inventory of their entire IT infrastructure and develop a plan to methodically enable IPv6 on the company's network infrastructure.

"Taking proper actions to have an early presence on IPv6 is critical for businesses," said McHenry.  "As the shift to this protocol happens, businesses without IPv6 internet presence run the risk of developing a 'blind spot' in their web services access," he added.

To ensure companies are prepared, AT&T is encouraging businesses to:

    --  Start with Internet facing services.  Establish an IPv6 Internet
        presence.
    --  Perform a readiness assessment.  Identify non-IPv6 compliant hosts,
        servers, applications, carrier services, and network equipment that are
        used to provide both internal and external IP services.
    --  Define IPv6 transition timelines incorporating testing and piloting of
        IPv6 functionality.
    --  Assess current IPv4 footprint and identify likely IPv6 triggers --
        private exhaust, mobile, public exhaust, customers, partners.
    --  Upgrade infrastructure for "dual stack" IP services that support both
        IPv4 and IPv6.
    --  Address application enablement for internet facing services --
        management and security model are keys.

AT&T IPv6 Readiness Plans

AT&T has invested millions of dollars to ensure that its own network and services are ready to make the transition to the new Internet protocol.

Having performed a complete product and infrastructure assessment, identified necessary steps, and developed platform and product specific strategies, AT&T is now employing a variety of tactics -- ranging from aggressively conserving/reclaiming addresses to full-scale upgrading of infrastructure-- to minimize risk and customer impacts.

Since 2006, AT&T has been preparing for this transition.  AT&T has:

    --  Transitioned its own Enterprise, Consumer and Mobility services to IPv6.
    --  Created a separate corporate program office to manage the transition in
        alignment with global IPv4 address exhaust scenarios.

Ford Accelerates Intelligent Vehicle Research, Creating 'Talking' Vehicles to Make Roads Safer

WASHINGTON, Jan. 26, 2011 /PRNewswire/ --

        wirelessly talk to each other, warning of potential dangers to enhance
        safety and flag impending traffic congestion to help improve the
        environment
    --  Intelligent vehicles could potentially help in 81 percent of all

        according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

    --  Ford is building the first-ever prototype intelligent vehicles that will
        tour the U.S. beginning this spring and will provide additional
        prototypes for the Department of Transportation's world-first research
        clinics expected to begin this summer
    --  Ford is doubling its intelligent vehicle investment in 2011 and plans a
        new 20-member task force of scientists and engineers to explore the
        technology's broader possibilities

Ford is aggressively accelerating its commitment to wirelessly connected intelligent vehicles - known as vehicle-to-vehicle communications - becoming the first automaker to build prototype vehicles for demonstrations across the U.S., doubling its intelligent vehicle investment in 2011 and dedicating even more scientists to developing this technology.

"Ford believes intelligent vehicles that talk to each other through advanced Wi-Fi are the next frontier of collision avoidance innovations that could revolutionize the driving experience and hold the potential of helping reduce many crashes," said Sue Cischke, group vice president, Sustainability, Environment and Safety Engineering.

An October National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report on the potential safety benefits of vehicle-to-vehicle communications estimates that intelligent vehicles could help in as many as 4,336,000 police-reported, light-vehicle crashes annually, or approximately 81 percent of all light-vehicle crashes involving unimpaired drivers. Experts say intelligent vehicles could be on the road in five to 10 years.

Ford's demonstration vehicles will hit the road this spring, starting at major technology hubs across the country.

How it works

Ford's vehicle communications research technology allows vehicles to talk wirelessly with one another using advanced Wi-Fi signals, or dedicated short-range communications, on a secured channel allocated by the Federal Communications Commission. Unlike radar-based safety features, which identify hazards within a direct line of sight, the Wi-Fi-based radio system allows full-range, 360-degree detection of potentially dangerous situations, such as when a driver's vision is obstructed.

For example, drivers could be alerted if their vehicle is on path to collide with another vehicle at an intersection, when a vehicle ahead stops or slows suddenly or when a traffic pattern changes on a busy highway. The systems also could warn drivers if there is a risk of collision when changing lanes, approaching a stationary or parked vehicle, or if another driver loses control.

Ford hits the gas on vehicle communications

After a decade of research, Ford plans a new 20-member task force - consisting of company planners, engineers and scientists from around the world with expertise in safety, eco-mobility, infotainment and driver convenience - to accelerate development of intelligent vehicles with features that provide a range of benefits to consumers.

Ford also is doubling its intelligent vehicle research investment, building on the company's SYNC® and MyFord Touch(TM) innovations. The goal is to define the next 10 years of safety, convenience and driver assistance, and strengthen the company's position as the global industry leader in connected vehicle technology.

"While there are challenges ahead, the foundation of these smarter vehicles is advanced versions of technologies that are pervasive - Wi-Fi and crash avoidance systems that Ford has pioneered in mainstream vehicles today," said Paul Mascarenas, vice president, Research and Advanced Engineering and chief technical officer. "Intelligent vehicles could help warn drivers of numerous potential dangers such as a car running a red light but blocked from the view of a driver properly entering the intersection."

Speaking the same language

Ford is partnering with other automakers, the federal government, as well as local and county road commissions to create a common language that ensures all vehicles can talk to each other based on a common communication standard.

This public-private partnership will include the world's first government-sponsored driving clinics beginning in summer 2011, for which the company will contribute two prototype Ford Taurus sedans. The DOT's Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) will head the research, continuing to coordinate with a coalition of automakers organized by the Crash Avoidance Metrics Partnership (CAMP), which is a joint research group headed by Ford and General Motors. The partnership is working to develop inter-operability standards in advance of completing the research phase in 2013.

"Ford has laid the groundwork to give vehicles a voice with SYNC and Wi-Fi technology," said Jim Vondale, director, Ford Automotive Safety Office. "Now we're working with other automakers and government leaders worldwide to develop common standards globally to bring intelligent vehicles to market quicker and more affordably."

Vondale has been appointed by Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to represent automakers on the ITS Advisory Committee. Mike Shulman, technical leader, Ford Research and Advanced Engineering, leads the government-industry technical partnership as program manager for CAMP.

Beyond safety, endless possibilities

By reducing crashes, intelligent vehicles could ease traffic delays, which would save drivers both time and fuel costs. Congestion also could be avoided through a network of intelligent vehicles and infrastructure that would process real-time traffic and road information and allow drivers to choose less congested routes.

According to Texas Transportation Institute's (TTI) 2010 Urban Mobility Report, traffic congestion continues to worsen in American cities of all sizes, annually wasting nearly 3.9 billion gallons of fuel in 2009 and costing the average commuter $808 in additional fuel. Leading factors in traffic delays are caused by accidents, breakdowns and road debris, TTI maintains.

"The day is not far off when our vehicles will operate like mobile devices with four wheels, constantly exchanging information and communicating with our environment to do things like shorten commute times, improve fuel economy and generally help us more easily navigate life on the road," said Mascarenas.

Laying the connectivity groundwork

Many of Ford's current technologies show how intelligent vehicles will be able to help drivers. For example, features that alert drivers to approaching hazards, such as Ford's collision warning with brake support and Blind Spot Information System (BLIS®) with cross-traffic alert rely on radar sensors to detect vehicles or objects close to the vehicle.

"Ford has pioneered connectivity in modern vehicles with SYNC," said Shulman. "We believe advanced Wi-Fi for intelligent vehicles could be added to smartphones or GPS systems and simply connect to SYNC like today's phones."
