New Bruise-Proof Computer Brings Getac Expertise to Semi-Rugged Laptop Sector

TELFORD, England, October 19, 2010/PRNewswire/ --

    Getac UK is setting a new standard in semi-rugged computing with the
launch of the S400 notebook -- a unit that combines processing power with a
robust build ideal for field service and light military applications.

    The S400 boasts IP5X and MIL-STD-810G ratings, meaning it can withstand
dusty and moist environments as well as vibration, shock and drop to military
standards.

    "This semi-rugged notebook is the ideal choice for operators needing a
unit that can easily withstand bruises and bumps but who don't require a
fully-rugged, sealed unit solution," says Peter Molyneux, Sales & Marketing
Director of Getac in the UK.

    The S400 is built with flexibility in mind: operators can specify an
Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-350M 2.26GHz or an Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-520M 2.4GHz
processor, as well as Getac's resistive-type multi touch screen, which allows
for gloved operation and "no look" gesture control.

    "We recognise that not all user environments will be the same -- field
service and maintenance workers are unlikely to need the optional blackout
stealth mode; but this, together with fully customisable quick keys allow the
unit to be tailored," Mr Molyneux adds.

    The durable unit is built with Getac's Kryptoshell(TM) chassis, a
material technology that is built tough and strong enough to withstand a 2.5
feet drop and meets MIL-STD-810G for shock, vibration and temperature
protection, while offering an operating temperature range of -0 degrees
Celsius to 45 degrees Celsius, with the option of extending this down to -15
degrees Celsius. But with an integrated handle and weighing in at under 3kg,
the S400 remains easily portable.

    The SATA hard disk drive (including shock mounted HDD protection with
aluminium casing) has 320GB of storage, and an optional 80GB solid-state
drive is also offered.

    The 14" 1366x768 anti-reflection screen can also be configured to offer
readability in bright sunlight thanks to the option of including a 700nit
display. Connectivity is also high with fast wireless network
(802.11 a/b/g/n), Bluetooth, optional integrated modem, GPS and Gobi 2000 3G
module.

BEIJING, Oct. 19 /PRNewswire-Asia/ -- With more than 800,000 downloads in the second quarter of this year, the free Youku app for devices running iOS 3.0 and higher has grown to become the most popular online video application in China's iTunes App Store, and the second most-downloaded application overall.

Youku announced on September 7 that it would be the first video site in the world to make its entire video selection available for viewing on the iPad and iPhone 4. Since September 18, when the iPad first became available in China, visits from iPad users have grown to account for an average of more than 50,000 unique visitors per day - or approximately one in six of China's estimated 300,000 users of grey-market and official iPads - with a daily average of 250,000 video views, or more than 100,000 hours of viewing time.  Growth among users of the more mature iPhone, including the newly available iPhone 4, has been even more marked.

Prepaid usage is increasing globally. Nikon has hosted it's Small World photomicrography competition, and has chosen the top 25 images in this contest. Some of these are pretty impressive, and worth checking out. Heck, there are some of the images that would make some awesome desktop pictures for your computer!

Major Torrent Sites Hacked and Go Down

According to TorrentFreak, many different torrent sites crashed on Saturday due to a hack to the Master Boot Records (MBR's) on many of the host servers. This caused many torrent users to seek other torrent sites for several hours due to the downtime. The host, Reality Check, made some comments to TorrentFreak regarding this issue.

“We are writing this letter to inform you that a very targeted malicious attack took place on our network this morning at 6AM EST. As a result, most of our server operating systems have been corrupted resulting in the current downtime,” the company wrote to the affected customers a few hours ago.

“We have access to all backups and have already figured out a strategy for bringing your servers back up, and have all hands on deck working to restore service,” Reality Check Network President Moisey Uretsky added.


Now interesting enough, they were unsure at first who was responsible for the large scale hack, and had a hunch that it was an anti-piracy organization, but found out later that it was a disgruntled ex-employee as stated here:

Named the Jim Gray Systems Lab after the late influential Microsoft researcher, the lab will move to new quarters today, reopening just off campus on West Main Street with three times the space, new equipment, and room for 30 researchers and staff.

"It's been a very successful partnership between industry and academia. Verizon Brings New Alternative for TV to Westerly, R.I.

FiOS TV Provides a Home-Entertainment Experience That Cable Can't Touch

WESTERLY, R.I., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Residents and businesses in parts of Westerly can now order Verizon's FiOS TV - the ultimate home-entertainment experience with a broad range of programming choices and superior picture quality.

Westerly is the 27th community in Rhode Island where FiOS TV is now available.

Verizon FiOS is the only TV service delivered over the nation's most advanced all-fiber network directly connecting to millions of individual homes and businesses, and providing customers with more channels, more high-definition programming, more video on demand and faster Internet speeds than old-fashioned cable TV.

Verizon is offering a triple-play bundle that includes FiOS TV, FiOS Internet and reliable telephone service for as low as $89.99 per month. 

In addition, new FiOS consumers who order a Verizon bundle as part of a two-year contract can take advantage of the Worry-Free Guarantee, allowing them to cancel their service within 30 days of the date of activation, with no termination fee.

FiOS TV offers more than 520 all-digital channels, including more than 138 high-definition (HD) channels in Westerly - more HD channels than the area's current cable provider, Cox.

"Our advanced fiber-optic network was built for HD, providing a high-def experience that cable can't touch," said Driscoll.  "With all-fiber connections running straight to their homes and businesses, viewers get eye-popping, jaw-dropping TV in both standard and high definition."

FiOS TV Service Highlights

FiOS TV customers receive many added benefits that are included in their service at no additional cost.  For example, FiOS TV includes 18,000 monthly video-on-demand titles (70 percent of which are free), including 3,300 in HD, and next-generation interactive services including an advanced interactive media guide; social networking, news and entertainment widgets; DVR management via broadband or cell phone; and more.

In addition, Verizon offers a FiOS TV Home Media DVR, which enables families to view, record, pause and rewind programming on up to three TVs in the home at the same time.  All FiOS TV HD customers also have access to Media Manager, free software that lets users access on their TVs personal videos, photos and music stored on their home computers.  Customers can also watch online videos from YouTube, blip.tv and Dailymotion and stream Internet Radio music from the PC to the TV.

DALLAS, Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T* today launched AT&T U-verse® Mobile for the new BlackBerry Curve 3G smartphone, an app that lets customers take their U-verse TV experience with them, wherever they go. U-verse Mobile is available today for AT&T Mobility customers on BlackBerry App World(TM), and is another example of how AT&T is delivering more TV content to customers across multiple devices.

U-verse Mobile lets U-verse TV subscribers browse the U-verse TV program guide, schedule and manage their DVR recordings, and for subscribers with qualifying TV plans, download hit TV shows over any Wi-Fi connection, and watch them on their qualifying smartphone from anywhere. The BlackBerry Curve 3G launched in AT&T company owned retail stores yesterday.
