Kiosks enhance patient and visitor experiences

CONCORD TOWNSHIP, Ohio, Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Lake Health made history last October when it opened TriPoint Medical Center, Northeast Ohio's first digital hospital. Now the health system is the first in the United States to deploy the latest generation of a digital wayfinding system featuring a virtual guide -- or avatar -- that helps patients and visitors navigate to their destinations quickly and easily.

The kiosk-based technology, which Lake Health installed inside the lobbies of its two hospitals, features a touch screen interface and a virtual guide that greets visitors and helps them locate physicians, departments and loved ones as well as hospital amenities such as the cafeteria, meditation room and family lounges. Designed to be intuitive and simple to use, the kiosk displays interactive maps and delivers consistent, flawless directions around the clock. A special feature even allows users to have directions sent to their cell phones via text messaging.

"Navigating medical facilities can cause frustration and anxiety for both patients and their families. This technology ensures that everyone feels comfortable with basic navigation from the moment they enter our hospitals," said Steve Karns, vice president of Administrative Services for Lake Health. Studies have shown that putting patients and their families at ease yields other benefits as well: patients are more likely to arrive for their appointments on time and with a trusting and open attitude toward staff.

Wagner and his team worked closely with Lake Health for nearly two years to customize the technology that works in concert with the more traditional sign-based interior and exterior wayfinding systems already in place at the two hospitals.

"The digital wayfinding kiosks that we designed for Lake Health fit in well with their modern, high-tech facilities, and provide media-rich content to health care consumers who are used to getting information on-demand," Wagner explained.

While the technology is not intended to replace the volunteers who staff the hospital reception desks, it's a way for patients and visitors to access information privately and on their terms. Wagner said that modifications have already been made based on user feedback, and the system will continue to evolve. Beyond providing directions, the kiosks soon will be able to serve as a virtual concierge. Users will be able to search for nearby restaurants, hotels, and even check the local weather forecast. Other future enhancements will include expanded content and multilingual capability.   

Since fall of 2009, Lake Health has been using interactive technology successfully at its Diagnostic Imaging departments. Instead of waiting to be called up to a desk to answer registration questions, patients can register via self-service kiosks.

According to Janie Racer, director of Clinical Services at Lake Health, this technology streamlines the patient check-in process and improves the delivery of patient care.

NEW YORK, Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The U.S. Department of Education (USDE) today announced that the Hispanic Information and Telecommunications Network, Inc. (HITN), in partnership with Callaway Digital Arts and the Michael Cohen Group LLC (MCG),was awarded a $30 million Ready to Learn grant for Project LAMP (Learning Apps Media Partnership). The project is an early childhood media-based education initiative.

Project LAMP will create highly engaging, digital learning applications to build reading and math skills for children ages two through eight. The focus of the student-centered learning applications will have broad market appeal and educational impact, and will specifically target low-income children, English Language Learners (ELL), and their families.

"Our goal is to help close the achievement gap. As a former educator, I know it's important to create quality content that helps childcare providers, parents, grandparents, and teachers prepare kids for kindergarten and reinforce reading and math through elementary school," said HITN President and CEO Jose Luis Rodriguez. "Many kids are already reading and watching stories about Miss Spider's Sunny Patch Friends and Nova the Robot. Now they can interact, direct the story, and learn via a variety of platforms. Project LAMP targets next-generation learners including children from low-income groups. The content will be largely available as an open educational resource and use a transmedia storytelling approach through books, iPAD/Touch Screen applications, mobile device and phone applications, console and hand held gaming applications, sing along DVDs and CDs, an interactive Website, and television. The USDE, in 2010, expanded the Ready to Learn grant program to include transmedia storytelling.

An essential component of Project LAMP will be the ongoing use of research and evaluation. As a result, new assessments will be required to provide the producers with useful information on children's learning and comprehension. Clears the US-Based IPR Dispute Between Openwave Systems and 724 Solutions

portfolio to include wireless patents from Openwave Systems. The licensing
agreement enables Mobixell to clear the US-based Intellectual Property Rights
(IPR) dispute between Openwave Systems and 724 Solutions - a company acquired
by Mobixell earlier this year. The details of the agreement between the
parties remain confidential.

Microsoft Investigating Zune 4.7 memory issues

In a quick article over at ZDNet, they claim that Microsoft is looking into an issue that claims clients are having memory issues with the newly released Zune software version 4.7.

In one statement ZDNet wrote this;

ATI Catalyst 10.9a Hotfix

According to AMD/ATI the new Catalyst 10.9a Hotfix drivers address some issues with the HD4850x2 and HD4870x2 video card performance. Hopefully this is the case, and hopefully it will address an issue that has been seen around the web dealing with CrossfireX on some of the HD48xx's and even some HD5xxx series of cards running specific motherboards. This issue is not really wide spread, however there are some of the "gamer" series of motherboards that have experienced this issue, and we can only hope that AMD/ATI has addressed these issues in the new "hotfix" drivers. This issue was addressed in the Catalyst 10.8b drivers, and we have to wonder why this was not carried over to the original Catalyst 10.9 drivers.

At any rate, this is what AMD/ATI has to say about the new 10.9a Hotfix Catalyst drivers:

* ATI Radeon™ HD 4870 X2 and ATI Radeon HD 4850 X2 series of products use both Graphics Processing Units (GPU) for high performance
* Intermittent hangs with Pop Cap games in a system with an ATI Radeon series graphics card installed
* High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) overscan / underscan settings are restored upon system reboot

AMA's platform is currently being beta-tested in Michigan in collaboration with the Michigan State Medical Society and will be available nationally in 2011.

Physicians will be able to access Care360 EHR on the AMA's new single sign-on platform, which  will provide physicians with health IT products, resources and services without disrupting their existing workflows.
