Open Source Community Paves Way for Developers to Improve Internet Access for the Aging, Disabled
New technologies from OpenAjax Alliance greatly simplify, speed Web 2.0 application development
SAN JOSE, Calif., Aug. 4 -- Aiming to greatly ease the barriers that the aging or people with disabilities experience in participating in Internet activities, the OpenAjax Alliance (OAA) announced it has created new open source tooling technology to help software developers make it dramatically easier for them to access and use Web 2.0-enabled business, government and consumer web sites. The new tooling technology simplifies the way Web applications are tested for compliance with current accessibility standards and guidelines, helping to speed up delivery of new accessible Internet applications.
Previously, developers had to complete their code and run various reports to determine if their application was compliant with accessibility standards. Using the new tooling technology, applications are tested dynamically, as developers build the code, providing real-time feedback on compliance.
A recent survey suggests that a full 69 percent of companies have realized measurable business benefits from Web 2.0 in their dealings with employees, customers, suppliers and industry experts. Unfortunately, millions of people with sensory, age-related, and other disabilities worldwide have been unable to fully participate in this evolution because of barriers to access and use.
OAA maintains the new tooling technology will help narrow the Web 2.0 digital divide for many segments of the global population by facilitating consistent, industry-wide interpretation of standards such as the World Wide Web Consortium's Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, version 2.0 (WCAG 2.0).
"From a development perspective, tooling has been the missing link," said Michael Squillace, co-chair of the OpenAjax Alliance Accessibility Tools Task Force and IBM (NYSE:IBM) Human Ability and Accessibility Center software engineer. "WCAG 2.0 gave us the criteria for Web 2.0 accessibility, and technical specifications like WAI-ARIA helped us understand how to enable rich Internet applications for accessibility. But, there hasn't been a reliable way to ensure compliance or validate correct implementation of specifications for accessibility. This rules format makes that possible. It's a significant achievement."
The new rules format can be used by any tool vendor and is the first to integrate structural design pattern analysis to ensure that Web 2.0 sites can effectively interact with assistive technologies. But according to OAA leaders, the most important outcome of this open community effort is that it promises to spur the growth of innovation around accessibility tooling for the next-generation of Web applications and services.
"Widespread use of smart, automated testing tools is essential to making rich Web applications accessible to everyone," said Preety Kumar, CEO, Deque Systems, Inc. "Web developers have been frustrated by inconsistent results from different tools, a problem that this Task Force has addressed with its rules format. The Accessibility Tools Task Force was initiated and established by OAA members in 2009 to develop best practices for reporting accessibility compliance and accessibility violations by accessibility test tools.

"Most Web developers first learn about the accessibility requirements of WCAG 2.0 through the use of automated evaluation tools. OAA provides an open-source set of rules that will provide a consistent, comprehensive and extensible set of accessibility rules for the implementation of WCAG 2.0 that can be integrated into a wide variety of validation tools and Web development environments. The meaning of an 'accessible' Web resource or application will now be much more consistent and understood," said Jon Gunderson, Ph.D., University of Illinois.
Since its inception, the Accessibility Tools Task Force has received industry-wide support and participation from a range of private-sector organizations and academic institutions such as Deque, Parasoft, and the University of Illinois. Together, the Task Force took on the development of the new rules format as its first and primary goal.

Moving forward, the Task Force will continue to leverage WCAG 2.0 and WAI-ARIA to develop new best practices for reporting accessibility compliance and accessibility violations by accessibility test tools. It will also expand the rules repository to better support all phases of the development life cycle and the upcoming refresh to U.S. Section 508 accessibility procurement guidelines.

AUSTIN, Texas Aug. 3, 2010 -- NIWeek -- National Instruments (NASDAQ:NATI) today introduced the NI PXIe-5630 6 GHz two-port vector network analyzer (VNA), the automated test industry's first VNA available in a compact PXI form factor. With support for full vector analysis of transmission and reflection (T/R) parameters, precision automatic calibration and flexible software-defined architecture, the new VNA is ideally suited for automated design validation and production test. Its modular PXI architecture and small, two-slot footprint make it possible for test engineers to incorporate vector network analysis into their test systems without the added cost and large footprint of traditional benchtop VNAs.

Both APIs are optimized for multicore processing to facilitate parallel test of multiple RF components, which provides a significant throughput advantage over sequential, switched testing.

National Instruments Introduces New Ethernet Data Acquisition Platform
New NI CompactDAQ System Delivers High-Speed, Distributed Sensor Measurements
AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 3, 2010 -- NIWeek -- National Instruments (NASDAQ:NATI) today announced the new Ethernet-based NI CompactDAQ modular data acquisition system, which combines the ease of use and low cost of a data logger with the performance and flexibility of modular instrumentation. The new NI cDAQ-9188 chassis is designed to hold eight I/O modules for measuring up to 256 channels of electrical, physical, mechanical or acoustic signals in a small (25 by 9 by 9 cm), rugged form factor. With more than 50 different I/O modules to choose from, engineers and scientists can build remote or distributed, high-speed measurement systems using standard Gigabit Ethernet infrastructure. In addition, NI CompactDAQ simplifies initial setup with zero configuration networking technology and a built-in, Web-based configuration and monitoring utility.

With NI-STC3 timing and synchronization technology, each chassis also can manage up to seven separate hardware-timed I/O tasks at different sample rates, including analog I/O, digital I/O and counter/timer operations. NI offers more than 50 C Series modules to use interchangeably in NI CompactDAQ systems, each of which is hot-swappable and auto-detectable for simplified setup. C Series modules offer integrated signal conditioning and multiple connectivity options to create custom, mixed-measurement systems specific to the needs of an application. A single analog input module, for example, can acquire up to four channels of simultaneous 1 MS/s voltage inputs for measuring high-speed signals such as ballistic pressure or ultrasonic transducers.
NI-DAQmx driver software, which is included with NI CompactDAQ, goes beyond a basic device driver to deliver increased productivity and performance. Programming NI CompactDAQ with LabVIEW delivers the most performance for the least effort. LabVIEW graphical programming makes it possible for engineers and scientists to develop sophisticated measurement, test and control systems using intuitive graphical icons and wires that resemble a flowchart. Playing National Geographic Animal Jam is a new experience each time players join in. As they explore Jamaa, they gather and earn Gems, which they can use to personalize their animal avatars and decorate their own animal den. As they progress on their journey, they uncover the story of the animals of Jamaa who themselves are on a quest to discover the origin of the Spirit Stones, artifacts of a past age that give each animal species its unique characteristics. The Phantoms of Jamaa have stolen many of the Spirit Stones, and as a result, the animals' numbers have dwindled. The animals are helped in their quest to recover the stones by the Shaman Ring of elder animals, who act as player guides. MONTEBELLO, Calif., August 3 -- TEAC America, Inc. launches the VP-101N expandable voice-recorder.
VP-101N is a single-channel voice-logging solution that features Ethernet / LAN access for expandability and scalability. It is "Disaster-Recovery" ready. Centralized control reduces cost of operation and maintenance and increases the efficiency of the recordings. VP-101N is network-attached and could work either as part of a system configuration or independently as a stand-alone system.
Up to 24 VP-101N units can be managed from only one PC. Other comparable units operate through USB connection only which is neither expandable nor scalable.
"TEAC VP-101N features endless hours of recording by storing data on both its internal and server storage. Other voice-logging systems lose the conversations recorded if the line is accidentally lost. With VP-101N, all the conversation is recorded and saved even if the line or phone is suddenly disconnected. VP-101N is "Powered-over-Ethernet" (PoE). VP-101N comes with AC power adapter. However, network hub is PoE capable. There is no need to use AC power adapter. Electric power is supplied via LAN cable from PoE hub.
