Motorola's Mission Critical Wireless Earpiece Delivers Secure and Robust Bluetooth® Communications for First Responders
HOUSTON, Aug. 2 -- (APCO, Motorola Booth # 531) -- The Enterprise Mobility Solutions business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) today announced Motorola's first encrypted mission critical Bluetooth earpiece enabling secure communications when paired with the Motorola APX(TM)-series portable radios.
Designed specifically for the needs of first responders, Motorola's Mission Critical Wireless Earpiece provides simple pairing and fast push-to-talk enabling every word to be said and heard.
The earpiece also performs in strenuous environments and has been optimized to provide loud, clear audio in noisy conditions, while allowing essential on-scene sounds to be heard. In addition to technical performance, it was designed to be comfortable to wear for long periods of time.
"Unlike consumer devices, this earpiece has been rigorously designed to meet the demanding needs of first responders," said Nick Candotti, director, Motorola Global Accessory and Energy business. "Whether calling for back-up in a foot chase or conferring with detectives at a stake-out, first responders can rely on this best-in-class wireless accessory to stay connected and better protected."
Mission Critical Wireless is enabled by adding an option board or enhanced expansion board to an APX radio. Secure pairing is simplified with Motorola's exclusive ultra-short range pairing system. During the pairing process, the Bluetooth IDs and a strong 128 bit key are exchanged to ensure transmission security is virtually unbreakable. The earpiece pairs within an inch of the APX radio and is nearly undetectable beyond a few inches. It takes only two seconds to pair and less than five seconds for the wireless connection to be ready to use.

Motorola Enables Seamless Communications Across Public Safety Agencies and Jurisdictions by Offering Multiple Choices for Interoperability
New Technology Helps Increase Efficiency and Effectiveness of First Responders, Simplify Management of Interoperability Data Networks and Reduce Network Complexity and Costs
HOUSTON, Aug. 2 -- (APCO, Motorola Booth # 531) The Enterprise Mobility Solutions business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) today announced it is delivering on its Next Generation Public Safety plan launched earlier this year. By providing first responders with several interoperability options, Motorola helps ensure seamless communications across public safety agencies and jurisdictions so they can effectively coordinate a joint response.
The interoperability technology highlighted at the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials-International, Inc. (APCO) Annual Conference and Exposition, include Project 25 Multi-band radios, Project 25 (P25) Inter-RF Subsystem Interface (ISSI) solutions, Motorola Managed ISSI Service solutions, and MOTOBRIDGE(TM). Motorola developed these scalable, cost-effective interoperability solutions to help agencies in their emergency response efforts.
The newest offering is the unique, customer focused, Motorola Managed ISSI Service. Motorola eases system implementation by operating the interoperability network and coordinating with each agency system on the network. All talkgroup mapping and provisioning between agencies is also managed by Motorola so agencies can focus on their objectives.
"As part of our commitment to delivering advanced communications to the nation's public safety agencies, we have developed several interoperability solutions to help first responders connect between P25 trunked systems and establish radio contact, no matter what network they're on or how far apart they are, so they can better coordinate their activities," said Jim Connor, director, Motorola Interoperable Solutions. "With our advanced interoperability solutions, such as Managed ISSI service, we are well-positioned to help agencies around the globe connect disparate radio systems so they can optimize their emergency response."
Motorola is a leader in implementing P25 systems, with over 200 ASTRO®25 systems in operation worldwide and over 1.7 million subscribers. Motorola has provided managed service solutions for over 125 customers around the globe, including some engagements that have lasted as long as 25 years.
P25 ISSI technology enabled four public-safety radio networks to come together as one
To ensure its Managed ISSI service could connect P25 trunked systems over a large geographical area, Motorola conducted a trial in Texas, last fall. Four IP-based P25 trunked systems operating on multiple frequency bands in Austin, Laredo, Harris County and Parker County were connected to Motorola's NOC in Illinois by ISSI prototype gateways to provide interoperable talkgroups that would allow Texas first responders and their commanders to be in direct radio contact, even if they were hundreds of miles apart. As a result, 70 users from 25 different agencies were able to roam freely and communicate seamlessly with each other while remaining in radio contact with their home dispatchers.
"I really appreciate Motorola's willingness to do the trial," said John Chaney, senior systems technologist, Harris County, Texas. "It says a lot about a company. In Harris County, we know that ISSI will be a part of our interoperability solutions."
Managed ISSI Service provided interoperability between the states of Colorado and Wyoming
Recognizing they needed multi-agency and multi-jurisdictional response for wildland fires, pursuit and weather-related incidents on the highways along their border, the States of Colorado and Wyoming conducted an ISSI interoperability test this summer between the border agencies and counties. Motorola's Managed ISSI service was used to conduct the test, which successfully enabled interoperable communications between the states.
"This ISSI interoperability project has provided an opportunity to enhance communications between city, county and state agencies, which has bridged an important gap, that up until now had never been addressed," said Lynnette Stieb-Sorensen, regional communication manager, Colorado State Patrol. "Whether it be police, fire, EMS or Department of Transportation, all agencies now have the ability to communicate not only across county lines, but state lines as well. We are looking forward to the possibility of communicating with adjacent states in the near future."
MOTOBRIDGE(TM), ISSI technology and APX multiband radios provided U.S. Coast Guard with access to interoperable radio network throughout the Gulf Coast
To assist with clean up efforts surrounding the Gulf Coast oil spill, Motorola provided Mississippi with two additional MOTOBRIDGE patches to link its state police with Louisiana's Wireless Information Network (LWIN) across the border. In addition, Motorola provided ISSI technology to connect coastal areas in Texas' Travis and Harris counties and enable Louisiana's Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness' (GOHSEP) 16 talk groups to connect to the LWIN via their APX multiband radios. As a result, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) was able to access a 700/800 MHz interoperable radio network featuring fingertip roaming throughout the Gulf Coast region.
"We are pleased to see our innovative interoperability solutions helping first responders seamlessly communicate across borders so they can do their jobs more efficiently and effectively," said Connor. "Interoperability is an important part of the public safety community and we believe this is just the beginning of endless opportunities on that front."

"The introduction of the miCoach app and sports-specific training plans was the natural next step to bring miCoach to an even wider audience. At adidas we work with the world's best coaches and athletes and we wanted to share this knowledge and experience with our consumers to inspire and to help them reach their personal goals," says Bernd Wahler, Chief Marketing Officer of adidas Sport Performance. "Our service approach is unique and sets new standards in terms of personalization in the entire sporting goods industry."
adidas has worked with some of the world's finest coaches, athletes and teams when developing the miCoach app and the sports-specific training plans including renowned athletic trainer Mark Verstegen, founder and director of the Athletes' Performance Institute (API) training and sport research center. In addition, adidas worked closely with the World Cup Champion Spanish National Soccer Team, FC Bayern Munich, AC Milan as well as athletes like Reggie Bush and Jessica Ennis.
"Coaching is essential to improving as an athlete - no matter what your sport. Whatever your goal is, a coach can help you improve. miCoach has a plan designed specifically to make you faster in football. You don't get faster by just running long distances, or running sprints, it takes interval training specifically designed to optimise football performance and miCoach provides a pretty cool plan to make you a better you," commented Reggie Bush
The miCoach app allows smart phone users to turn the phone into a personal coach: pace triggered voice coaching, personalized and sports-specific training plans, workout calendar, and workout feedback are some of the features. The miCoach app syncs automatically with the intelligent website http://www.micoach.com offering six documented training plans for each sport and the option to create personalized conditioning programs. On micoach.com the training programs are tailored to the personal fitness level and goals allowing users to monitor, manage and analyze progress over time.
With the launch of the miCoach app, adidas unveils its new global campaign "miCoach says". The new campaign celebrates coaching and the pre-season conditioning program of some of the world's best athletes including Andy Murray, Reggie Bush, Derek Rose and Jessica Ennis. Harris Corporation Unveils BeOn® - a Unique Global Push-to-Talk Enterprise Solution
Innovative Solution Brings Land Mobile Radio Services to 3G and 4G Wireless Networks
HOUSTON, Aug. 2 -- (APCO International, Booth 231) -- Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), an international communications and information technology company, today introduced its BeOn® solution -- the first professional push-to-talk solution designed to enable enterprises to have managed group communications anywhere in the world using both 3G and 4G cellular networks.
The Harris BeOn solution offers traditional land mobile radio features such as group calling, individual calling, group scanning, distress calls, and dispatch/administrative services, while integrating wireless services such as user location, user presence/status, and text messaging. With the BeOn solution, users can communicate instantly on a host of commercial smartphones or rugged devices with one or many people, over multiple GSM-based wireless carriers-domestic and international.
Harris' BeOn solution is built on the Harris integrated VIDA® (Voice, Interoperability, Data and Access) network platform, currently deployed by public safety, public services and large private sector entities. VIDA enables high performance Push-To-Talk (PTT) over commercial wireless networks, as well as seamless interoperability with legacy and future land mobile radio (LMR) systems. The BeOn solution is a premier global mobile communication solution that is group-oriented, instantaneous and geared for enterprise customers covering large footprints. Its capabilities will allow users to create centralized dispatch services over commercial 3G or 4G wireless networks, or if needed, connect with legacy LMR system.
"Given our expertise in mission critical communications and the proliferation of mobile broadband, we seized a market opportunity to create a scalable, global push-to-talk solution delivered over wireless carrier networks, which enterprises can deploy at a competitive price point while offering key LMR user benefits," said Dana Mehnert, group president, Harris RF Communications. "Among industries with global assets, large footprints or rural service geography - such as construction, transport or field services, our BeOn solution satisfies the need for mobile, group-oriented instant communication."
Enterprises could rely on the BeOn solution's unique blend of land mobile radio features and its powerful IP platform to organize users into talk groups for enhanced coordination and efficiency - whether local or global. For example, a parcel shipping company could utilize the BeOn solution to improve its delivery management and coordination for better customer service and savings on fuel costs, or government enterprise employees working in the field could better serve the community through more efficient managed group communications using the Harris BeOn solution.
Harris, a proven leader in assured communications for defense and public safety, blended their experience in LMR with the interoperability of its VIDA platform to develop its BeOn solution, the innovative, global push-to-talk solution designed to improve enterprise team coordination and increase productivity in industries where immediate accessibility is paramount. Coffee, Controversy and Connectivity: Why Internet Cafes Concern Governments
The Digital Policy Council's latest research examines the mounting public policy challenges of Internet Cafes as governments around the World escalate crackdowns and regulation.
WASHINGTON, July 30 -- The Digital Policy Council (DPC), an international, non-partisan "think tank" on 21st Century Governance, investigates the swirling controversy around internet cafes across the globe as these establishments are sprouting into hot spots for illicit gambling, teenage gaming, terror e-mails, and other nefarious activities.
The DPC is the research and public advocacy arm of Digital Daya ('digital influence'), a new generation strategic consultancy that empowers leaders in the public sectors to leverage the new media of the Internet to communicate their message, build public influence, and execute high-impact programs to reshape governance and public policy.
According to The Digital Policy Council's most up-to-date research, governments around the world are struggling to regulate the growing number of cybercafes in their communities and whether open or autocratic, all authorities are intensifying surveillance and enforcements tactics to try and gain control over the situation.
Time For New Policy Actions
Governments at first deeply encouraged Internet cafes as a means to offer access to modern technology to its citizens and create opportunities for social and economic development. They are now heavily retreating from this idea. Internet cafes have failed as a tool for public policy.
The vast majority of Internet cafes are in reality now merely online gaming and gambling arcades. Many have become integral to government counter-terrorism strategies as heavy surveillance of these establishments is creating an unnerving atmosphere wherein people are afraid. The aspirations for cybercafes as places of innovation, inspiration, and inclusion into the digital economy have faded away.
As an alternative, the report encourages governments to consider investing in specifically designed internet-based innovation centers to promote e-literacy, build human capital, and broaden access to information technology.
The Digital Policy Council (DPC) is an international, non-partisan 'think tank' that promotes good governance and policy-making. The research and policy arm of the management consultancy firm Digital Daya(TM), DPC's mission is the advancement of open discourse on issues of inclusive governance through the use of the Internet and Web 2.0.

NEW YORK, July 30 -- Charterhouse Group, Inc. ("Charterhouse") today announced a definitive agreement to sell NewPath Networks, Inc. ("NewPath" or the "Company"), a leading developer and operator of distributed antenna system ("DAS") networks, to a subsidiary of Crown Castle International Corp. ("Crown") (NYSE:CCI) in a transaction valued at $115 million. NewPath was the eleventh platform investment made from the Charterhouse Equity Partners IV fund.
The transaction follows a period of significant growth for NewPath under Charterhouse ownership. Bill Marraccini, a serial Charterhouse Entrepreneur, introduced the firm to this investment opportunity in early 2009 on a proprietary basis and Charterhouse was able to quickly complete the investment during a period when the financial markets were unsettled.
Thomas C. Dircks, Managing Partner at Charterhouse, said, "Our strategy is to partner with Charterhouse Entrepreneurs to identify and invest in opportunities in emerging business services sub-sectors, and then work with talented management teams to support profitable value creation. This is the second time we have executed this strategy with Bill Marraccini, who founded and introduced us to the extremely successful AAT Communications (CEP III) investment in 1997. Bill's investment touch and thoughtful leadership as Chairman of NewPath were instrumental in achieving this very successful outcome for Charterhouse and our partners."
Bill Marraccini commented, "The strategic and financial support of the Charterhouse team and Meritage, which invested alongside Charterhouse, put NewPath in a great position to take advantage of the explosive growth in DAS networks as a preferred solution to meeting the phenomenal growth in wireless applications and demand. I would like to thank Mike Kavanagh, NewPath's CEO, and his team for all the hard work and dedication they exhibited in taking NewPath from an early stage business to a recognized leader. We have confidence that the NewPath team, combined with Crown's own experience in the DAS field, positions Crown to be the premier owner and provider of DAS solutions."
The transaction is expected to close in approximately 60 days, subject to customary closing conditions. The Company was advised by Citigroup Global Markets Inc. and Proskauer Rose LLP.

BOULDER, Colo., July 30 -- A disturbing Internet security trend is putting home PC users' identities at risk. Phishing Trojans, a kind of Internet security threat designed to steal your personal information and wreak other havoc on your PC, have been taking on new forms. In some cases, cybercriminals use them for "phishing" your log-in credentials and other sensitive information. In other cases, they're triggering phony antivirus programs to appear on your PC and trick you into giving away your credit card number in exchange for a solution you never receive.
Internet security experts at Boulder, Colorado-based Internet security service company Webroot have also identified malicious programs that leave your PC unusable after infection: Victims either cannot reboot their PCs once the data theft is complete, or their PCs crash when they attempt to remove the malware.
"In some cases, the crashes were the result of poor coding by the malware author," says Andrew Brandt, Lead Threat Research Analyst at Webroot. "But increasingly, it appears that this behavior is deliberate and occurs without warning. This unfortunate trend appears to be getting worse, leaving a raft of perplexed, angry victims unable to use their computers in the wake of an infection."
Home PC users with a taste for the more technical details of phishing Trojans will appreciate the following documentation of recent examples:
-- Zbot. Many phishing Trojans turn an infected computer into part of a
botnet, a zombie army of Internet-connected computers that are
controlled remotely and unbeknownst to their owners. Botnets can send
spam, spread malware to other computers, engage in distributed
denial-of-service attacks, serve as covert file storage areas and a
host of other undesirable activities. It is speculated that new
variants of Zbot may deliberately disable the PC as a distraction,
making it more difficult for the victim to become aware that
credentials were stolen and used until it is too late.
-- Tacticlol. This phishing Trojan arrives in email inboxes disguised as
either UPS shipping information or some sort of Facebook account
update. It typically downloads at least one rogue antivirus program
when a victim unzips the attachment and runs the file. One of the
rogues used in a recent infection is called XP Defender. The rogue
itself disables common browsers, Outlook Express and other
Internet-enabled applications, among other things.

TUALATIN, Ore., July 30 -- Camcorders and camera phones step aside, because there is a new way to capture video - in high-definition! - even when scuba diving or jumping out of a plane 12,500 feet above the earth's surface. Oregon Scientific, a leading designer and worldwide marketer of personal electronics, today announced the launch of its highly anticipated ATC9K All-Terrain Video Camera, the next generation of the award-winning ATC line of action cameras. This easy-to-use, waterproof and shock-resistant camera can be strapped to a helmet, handlebars, surfboard, or snowboard, so it can follow athletes places they wouldn't dare bring a normal camera - and shoots in high-definition. Beginning today, extreme sport enthusiasts can share videos of their own outdoor adventures on Facebook for a chance to win a Grand Prize Package valued at $750.
The trouble with capturing extreme sports on video is that most cameras can't handle the dirt, grime, or water - and holding the camera steady is an even bigger challenge. The compact ATC9K, however, features a built-in G-sensor that measures the force of gravity during acceleration, deceleration and hang time, allowing users to record and review every detail of their performance. A laser pointer on the camera also helps users line up the camera, so they never miss a moment of the action. Designed for the rugged adventure, the ATC9K does not sacrifice function over form - it features full 1080p professional quality HD video, shoots up to 60 frames per second, has 130 degree wide field of view, captures 5-megapixels photos, and has a built-in color LCD display that allows users to preview and play back videos.
Through September 30th, ATC fans can get in on the action by uploading their own videos to Facebook and sharing the mud, sweat, and glory of their own outdoor conquests. From dirt-biking to sea kayaking, the ATC9K can capture it all - even up to 65 feet under water. Video submissions that meet contest terms and conditions will be narrowed down to the top five videos. The winning videos will be selected by a panel of judges and prize packages include one Grand Prize package valued at $750 and one Runner-up prize package valued at $350.
The ATC9K is also compatible with a unique GPS plug-in (sold separately with availability in October) that enables PC-users to map their location, speed and distance travelled on their computer during playback using Google Maps or Google Earth. While watching the video clip playback on a computer, users can view corresponding location, acceleration and altitude displayed on the map. Outdoor enthusiasts, trainers, and sports lovers alike can view or edit footage on single screen with this useful tool and keep track of each wilderness trail, road race, or coastline.
The ATC9K All-Terrain Video Camera is currently available for the suggested retail price of $299.99 at www2.oregonscientific.com and includes a remote control, a USB cable for connecting to a PC or Mac, and an HDMI cable for HD playback on a TV. A Velcro® strap, handle bar, helmet grip, and silicon strap mounting accessories are also included.

Ford, TechShop Collaborate to Spur 'DIY' Auto Innovation With New Detroit-Area Workshop
DEARBORN, Mich., July 30 -- -- Ford and TechShop, the world's first and largest membership-based
do-it-yourself (DIY) workshops, announce a collaborative effort to
open a communal work center in the Detroit area for individual
inventors
-- Ford is the first automaker to matchup with TechShop, marking the
latest move in a series of open-innovation initiatives led by Ford to
empower the crowds to help create the next must-have automotive
technologies and features
-- Technical leaders will discuss Ford's overarching vision for future
automotive innovation and information exchange at the Detroit edition
of the event that sparked the joint effort in the first place, Maker
Faire, to be held in Dearborn at The Henry Ford, July 31-August 1
Ford (NYSE:F) and do-it-yourself (DIY)-based TechShop have kicked off a collaborative effort to open a workshop in the Detroit area that invites innovators, from backyard tinkerers to software engineers, to come on in and invent the next must-have in automotive technology.
A membership-based open-access concept started in 2006, TechShop (http://www.techshop.ws) offers creative minds of all kinds affordable access to space, tools, and machinery so they can dream up, design and develop prototypes of their latest inventions. To date, TechShop has locations in California and North Carolina, with more than 800 total members.
Ford and TechShop first met up in May at the largest DIY event of its kind, 2010 Maker Faire in San Mateo, Calif., where Ford was invited to show off its "American Journey 2.0" open- innovation vehicle app project with University of Michigan students. That gathering ignited the idea for the matchup that has taken form in less than three months.
"Ford has taken a leadership role in tapping ideas from outside the automotive space, including with academia, consumer electronics and information technology companies, to help create powerful first-to-market technologies such as Ford SYNC. Why not extend those opportunities to individual inventors and the maker community as well; asking them to embrace the vehicle as a possible platform for their ideas," said K. Venkatesh Prasad, group and senior technical leader, Ford Infotronics Research and Advanced Engineering.
Ford technical leaders will share the company's vision on individual inventive contributions and how Detroit-area entrepreneurs can play a part during the Detroit Maker Faire held at The Henry Ford in Dearborn this weekend. "The talent pool and level of skill and knowledge in and around Detroit is incredible," added Bill Coughlin, president and CEO of Ford Global Technologies, the domestic auto industry's only internal licensing group. "TechShop can provide a physical hub for this inventive community, allowing us to connect with them in a way never done before."
Ford is the first automaker to collaborate with TechShop, said Mark Hatch, TechShop CEO. "We are thrilled that Ford wants to work with TechShop to create a game-changing innovative workspace in Detroit, a market area full of a talented community of makers, hobbyists, backyard mechanics and general tinkerers that we have been trying to enter for more than a year."
Open innovation
The Ford and TechShop collaboration is further evidence of Ford's overarching adoption of the open innovation model made popular by social media, software developers and technology companies.
In recent years, Ford's outreach to automotive outsiders for ideas has included a who's who list of academia, suppliers, consumer electronics and information technology companies. That list also includes more unlikely suspects, such as consumers and software developers.
Last spring, for example, Ford actively engaged consumers to submit, share and suggest ideas and technologies on the "Your Ideas" section of the Ford brand interactive consumer Web site, http://www.thefordstory.com. The pilot session generated some 3,600 submissions, giving consumers the ability to participate in a community-based setting where they could review and rate posted ideas and track what people thought about their own suggestions.
And, more recently, Ford announced the creation of a virtual community to engage software developers to innovate around SYNC. Interested developers can visit the SYNCmyride Web site (http://www.syncmyride.com/developer) and click to submit their innovative ideas, and sign up for the latest information and news about the upcoming SYNC application programming interface (API) and software development kit (SDK). Through July, nearly 800 app developers have signed up.
In theory, the collaboration with TechShop is an easy extension of the individual engagement fostered by open-source initiatives such as "Your Ideas" and the new SYNC developer network.
"With TechShop, we are bringing the concept of individual involvement to life in a physical space where people can develop their ideas, create prototypes and display them," said Coughlin.
Ford also hopes that the TechShop will inspire its own Detroit-area engineers, designers and scientists to innovate on their own time. "Inventors don't have access to the same type of equipment or tools during off-hours as they do during work hours," said Hatch. "We want to offer them an affordable place to go that has the necessary equipment and resources to make their inventive ideas a reality."
A leader in licensing technology, Ford also sees the broader business potential of TechShop and streamlining the process for inventors looking to not only make physical prototypes of their ideas but license their technology to the masses.
"We want to create a mercantile exchange of innovations and ideas - a one-stop shop where makers can dream, design, develop and license their innovations for the real world," said Coughlin. "We want those dreams to come to life right here in Detroit."

EF Johnson Technologies, Inc. to Introduce FIRESafe(TM) Features at APCO
New FIRESafe Features Build Communication Awareness on the Fireground
IRVING, Texas, July 30 -- EF Johnson Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:EFJI) announced today that it will introduce its new suite of FIRESafe(TM) software features at the Association of Public-Safety Communications Officials (APCO) annual conference and exposition, August 1 - 3 at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas.
"We understand that radio communication at a fireground scene is often more challenging and demanding than regular dispatched communication," said Michael Jalbert, president and chief executive officer of EF Johnson Technologies, Inc. "Firefighters are faced with a dynamic communication environment especially while operating in building structures. A simple act, such as entering a stairwell or walking down a hallway, may cause the firefighter to lose his radio communication. Even worse, a firefighter may lose communication and not even know it."
The FIRESafe features will make a firefighter's radio smarter. FIRESafe will monitor the communication link using a Project 25 digital "heartbeat" generated by the FIRESafe feature in the command radio. The heartbeat provides signal strength information that FIRESafe uses to determine the quality of the communications link, and the firefighter will be alerted with audio tones when he nears the communication range limit or is out of communication range altogether.
"We understand that when a firefighter enters a burning building he is solely focused on the mission at hand. The 51FIRE ES portable radio launched by the Company earlier this year, combined with the FIRESafe features, will provide a hardware and software solution for safe and reliable communications for firefighters and the citizens they served," Jalbert added.
APCO attendees will be able to hear demonstrations of the FIRESafe features at the Company's booth.
