Cable&Wireless Worldwide Reduces CO2 With Earth/Satellite Location Centre Closure
LONDON, July 30, 2010--
- C&W Worldwide Site Relocation Results in Dramatic Drop in
Company's CO2 Emissions
- New Eco-Friendly Building With Green Roof
As part of its ongoing pledge to significantly reduce its
carbon emissions by 80 percent by 2050, Cable&Wireless Worldwide has
successfully closed Thameside, its earth/satellite location centre in London.
Originally the Docklands Telecommunications Centre, Thameside was a
collection of huge satellite dishes in the midst of the city. The closure,
and subsequent relocations, of the site will equate to an 85 percent drop in
carbon emissions for the activities fulfilled by the site. This is a
significant saving for C&W Worldwide and amounts to a 1.48 percent reduction
of the company's total carbon emissions, the equivalent of taking almost 1000
cars off the road.[i]
As a global network node and co-location centre Thameside
provided global Internet Protocol (IP) backbone access of up to 10 gigabytes
per second (GB/s), for roughly 40,000 100 Mbs Ethernet services. It also
supplied direct access to all United Kingdom national and international cable
heads, connecting tens of thousands of IP data and voice users around the
world via cable networks to Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and the Americas.
The closure and upgrade of Thameside's 25 year old legacy facilities and
equipment, consisting of transmission and switching architecture, means that
Cable&Wireless Worldwide will save four times the amount of space, reducing
more than 850m2 to approximately 200m2, and, by embracing new technologies,
will be much more efficient.
The relocation of tens of thousands of users' network
connectivity was an immense project that has taken just over two years to
complete. A team of more than a hundred people were a part of the 24
hour-a-day, two-year long operation to close Thameside, migrating all
services and closing all voice, IP and data, hosting; and access platforms
located in the site. All electronic equipment was disposed of according to
WEEE regulations and, wherever possible, the equipment removed from the site
was repurposed in other locations or recycled.
The various services provided by Thameside have been
successfully dispersed to other C&W Worldwide locations with the satellite
capability moved to Whitehill Earth Station in Oxfordshire and a new
ecologically friendly network site, built with low-carbon efficiency in mind,
even boasting a living roof that provides insulation, attracts local
wildlife, creates an appealing facade for the surroundings and helps C&W
Worldwide realise even more carbon savings.
Phil Male, Chief Strategy Officer at Cable&Wireless Worldwide,
comments; "The closing of Thameside is a significant step in helping us reach
our environmental targets and, by embracing sustainable development, we can
help ourselves and our customers employ more efficient and energy conserving
ways of working. The team has accomplished a lot with this project and in
many ways it sets the benchmark for future initiatives as we continue to
improve our environmental performance. An 85 percent reduction in CO2 for all
the activities of a single site, the equivalent of taking almost 1000 cars
off the road, demonstrates what we and other businesses can achieve."

[i] 964 cars in total. The calculation assumes 12,000 miles
per car per annum or 16093 Km per annum and 164.9 grams of CO2 per Km. The
average car in the UK generates 3.18457 tonnes of CO2 per annum[i]. C&W
Worldwide's Dockland site (Thameside) used 6,638,682 kWh per annum. Assuming
UK National Grid power at 0.544[i] Kg CO2e per kWh, 6,638,682 kWh is 3611.4
tonnes per annum. However Closing Thames side will mean 15% of the power
demand will go elsewhere so closure will save 5,6428,795 kWh or 3069.7 tonnes
per annum. 3069.7 tonnes per annum divided by 3.18457 tonnes per car per
annum is 964 cars. Closing Thames side will remove 1.48% of C&W Worldwide's
FY 09/10 power demand.

Price Improvement Technology Has Potential to Benefit IG Index Clients
Over 1,000,000 pounds Saved in April-June 2010
LONDON, July 30 -- Clients of IG Index, the UK's leading financial spread betting firm, have collectively saved over 1,000,000 pounds in recent months thanks to the company's innovative Price Improvement technology as clients may now receive a better order price when they place a trade. In periods of heightened market volatility, prices move very quickly and should this be in the clients favour then the savings may be passed on immediately, avoiding the need for re-quotes.
Analysing a total of 3,395,048 trades executed by IG Index during the three month period, over 50,000 of the transactions qualified for price improvement, generating total savings to clients of 1,087,117 pounds.
Consider the scenario where rumours are circulating in the market that an imminent Bank of England announcement will see sterling weaken against the US dollar, so you open a deal ticket and see the current price at 1.5160-1.5161. You place a sell order at 1.5160 but as your transaction is being processed the price jumps to 1.5166-1.5167, or a six-pip rise in your selling price. Rather than requoting the order at the new price, as the move is in your favour the deal is struck and your deal ticket will reflect the savings made.
In addition to Price Improvement technology, IG Index has also moved to incorporate a number of alternative execution venues or MTFs into its trading platform for the pricing of shares spread bets. With up to 40% of equities now typically being traded away from the London Stock Exchange, ensuring clients can also use prices from the likes of Chi-X and BATS Europe means that, in the vast majority of cases a more competitive trade can be delivered.
IG Index's award-winning PureDeal trading platform is also acclaimed for its reliability, customisation options, one-click dealing and easy-to-build watchlists. It can be accessed either via an internet browser running on a Mac or PC, or over a wide range of mobile devices such as smartphones, PDAs, BlackBerrys and the iPhone.
About IG Index
IG Index is the world's leading financial spread betting provider, offering clients the ability to spread bet on over 7000 shares listed on markets worldwide, along with indices, forex, commodities and treasuries. L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future - New Submission Feature Leads Upgrades to Improved Website
The most successful Writing and Illustrating Contests in the world just got better -- online submission now available.
HOLLYWOOD, Calif., July 29 -- Writers of the Future has announced its newly upgraded website http://www.writersofthefuture.com/ which makes accessing the site much faster and easier. "But the best news,'' stated Joni Labaqui, the Contests' Director, ''is that entries for the writing contest and illustrating contest can now be submitted online." A move that she said, ''will make it much easier for aspiring writers and illustrators from around the world to participate.''
It had been apparent for some time that the cost to mail a submission from many countries made entering the contest prohibitive for those whose writing and art should be submitted. And for the aspiring writer or artist still feeling the effects of a down economy, the cost of a hard copy story print out or quality art print out and postage, made entering the contest unreal.
"This change will markedly expand the playing field,'' continued Labaqui, ''allowing the best in speculative fiction stories to be sent in from English speaking writers world over." And for the illustrator contest, "it is even more exciting as art has no language barrier and we expect a significant increase in entries from all countries."
L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future is already known for publishing the hottest new talent of speculative fiction. The series continually receives high marks and was again praised this year in a Publishers Weekly starred review stating that the anthology was, ''Always a glimpse of tomorrow's stars.''
As has been the case since its inception, there is no entry fee for either writing contest or illustrating contest entries and contestants retain rights to their work.
The Writers of the Future contest was created by L. Ron Hubbard in 1983 as a means of allowing the newcomer a chance to have their works seen. Based on its success, a companion Illustrators of the Future contest was also created. And this program has provided that starting point for so many careers. Over 600 writers and illustrators have seen their name in print over the 25 years of the contests' history. And hundreds of contestants have continued with now-successful careers. At last count, there have been over 700 novels, including New York Times bestsellers, and over 3,000 short stories that have been published by contest winners. In addition to continuing on in the field of speculative fiction, several have gone on to publish in genres such as mystery and romance, to write for TV and motion pictures and to become editors and critics.

Program Pilots High-Tech Tools for Chevrolet Salespeople
iPhone, iPod touch and iPad app makes sales tools portable
RALEIGH, N.C., July 29 -- Chevrolet is the first automaker to pilot a sales app for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad which allows salespeople to help customers research trim levels, options and financing and search vehicles in dealer inventory. A nationwide rollout to Chevrolet dealers is expected this fall.
The Chevrolet Dealer app features the entire line of Chevrolet cars, trucks and crossovers. It allows a salesperson to work with a customer to pick interior and exterior colors, search for a matching vehicle in the dealership's inventory and look up offers that can be applied to the purchase or lease.
"Chevrolet Dealer allows us to spend less time behind our desks and more time on the showroom floor with our customers," said Joel Smith, retail operations manager at Hendrick Chevrolet in Cary, N.C., where the pilot began July 9. "Our customers have been wowed when we are able to show them video and help them choose options, all on the iPhone."
The app also allows salespeople to submit and retrieve quotes so they can help customers find and buy the vehicle they want anywhere in the showroom, on the sales lot, or even when they aren't in the dealership.
"We continue to look for smart ways to use technology to help our salespeople sell vehicles," said Alan Batey, vice president, Chevrolet U.S. Sales. "With more and more salespeople and customers using mobile technologies, this makes sense as our next step."
Chevrolet recently announced the Chevrolet Showroom shopping app for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, which allows users to research and locate the car, truck or crossover they desire. Once a vehicle has been located, users can save it to their device and share it with friends and family via e-mail or Facebook.

NetChoice Warns of Small Business Tax Threat in State Online Tax Expansion
Bipartisan Resolution by Representative Hodes seeks to mitigate threat
WASHINGTON, July 29 -- Today, Representative Paul Hodes (D, NH) introduced a bipartisan resolution to protect small businesses from tax collection burdens that would be imposed by the Streamlined Sales Tax. The resolution (H. Res. 1570), titled "Supporting the Preservation of Internet Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses," holds that Congress should not impose unfair tax collection burdens that would hurt the U.S. economy and consumers.
The resolution is a response to legislation introduced in July 2010 by Representative Bill Delahunt (D, Mass.) which would force all retailers across the nation to become tax collectors for states that have joined the Streamlined Sales Tax Project (SSTP).
The legislation would force out-of-state sellers to collect taxes for states where they have no physical presence, overturning a Supreme Court ruling that tax systems are so complex that they represent an unreasonable burden on interstate commerce.
"Don't believe it when tax collectors say their software makes it trivial for tiny sellers to collect everyone's sales tax," said Steve DelBianco, executive director of NetChoice. "Small sellers will spend thousands of dollars making changes to their website software, plus endless time and accounting fees to handle exceptions, customer questions, and state tax audits."
Large retailers like Walmart and Target support SSTP legislation because their physical presence already requires them to collect tax on their web sales. Even just a little simplification helps these big-box stores, while SSTP imposes brand new costs on their small online competitors. SSTP advocates have failed to meaningfully simplify their tax system and have now done away with small business protections that were initially promised.
In the ten years that states have been trying to meet the challenge laid down by the Supreme Court, SSTP advocates have shown that simplification was only a slogan, not a standard. Gone are promises of one tax rate per state and a single rule for sourcing sales.
Instead, SSTP advocates have abandoned simplicity whenever a potential member state insisted on retaining its complex tax policies.
Further undermining SSTP supporters is research by George Mason University Law professor and Brookings Institution Senior Fellow Jeff Eisenach. The research found uncollected sales taxes on e-commerce in 2008 to be far lower than estimates used by SSTP advocates, potentially capturing less than three-tenths of one percent of state and local tax revenues.
"The good news is that this problem is solving itself as more online sales come from chains who have stores in most states, such as BestBuy and Walmart," said Eisenach. "Our study shows that 17 of the top 20 Internet retailers collect in at least 30 states, and 15 collect in nearly all states with a sales tax."
"The growth of 'brick and click' retailing will likely increase the proportion of online sales on which taxes are already being collected -- even if Congress takes no action on the Delahunt bill," said Eisenach. Additional reasons for Congressional action in protecting small sellers from the SSTP can be found on the NetChoice website: http://www.netchoice.org/library
"Representative Hodes and his colleagues are to be commended for standing against a national tax system that would saddle small retailers with new collection and compliance burdens," said DelBianco. "We all support a simpler tax system, but the streamlined sales tax project has become the proverbial wolf in sheep's clothing."
NetChoice is an advocacy organization that fights threats to online commerce and promotes policies that protect Internet innovation and communication on a state, federal and international basis. The Washington, DC-based group protects Internet commerce-driven competition and battles rules that hinder consumer choice and hurt small businesses. Lake County, Florida Marks Full Year Operating Motorola 700/800 MHz Project 25 Radio System With Over 11 Million Calls
Digital 18-site system provides interoperability 3-1/2 years after devastating tornadoes
SCHAUMBURG, Ill., July 29 -- Lake County, Florida today announced that it has successfully marked a major radio system milestone with more than 11 million push-to-talk calls on its one-year-old Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) ASTRO® 25 digital radio system, the state's first 700/800 MHz licensed network. The $32 million radio system, formally accepted by the county earlier this year, is providing regional interoperability just 3-1/2 years after severe tornadoes raised serious communications issues for the Central Florida county.
The new countywide system provides interoperable communications among all cities in Lake County and gives public safety agencies the ability to communicate with adjoining counties to allow for mutual aid capabilities on a single platform.
"One year into operating our new Motorola system, we have reached a major system milestone and recorded 11,262,742 push-to-talks on this robust network," said Greg Holcomb, director of public safety communications technologies, Lake County. "We have now been in operation a full year and many calls and emergencies have been addressed and many interagency operations have been successfully coordinated through the system. System performance has far exceeded anything known to us previously."
Statistically, the system during the first full year of operations compiled a total active air time of more than 25,000 hours, with an average voice call duration of 11 seconds for the more than 11 million calls made.
"The Lake County Board of County Commissioners, Sheriff, Police Chiefs, Fire Chiefs and municipal agencies unanimously agreed and supported the proposed system funding and designed use," said Holcomb. "For the first time, Lake County has reliable interagency, portable communications across the entire county This speaks highly of what can be accomplished collectively. We're all committed to providing the necessary interoperability, safety and protection for our first responders and citizens throughout the Central Florida region."
The Lake County system includes 36 mixed 700/800 MHz trunked channels in an 18-tower simulcast system design. The Motorola ASTRO 25 system features P25 Common Air Interface, effective radio channel management, fast and reliable communications protocol, integrated voice and data, advanced IP-based system architecture, trunking-specific mobile and portable radios, and dispatch functionality to manage Lake County radio users. The radios include Motorola XTS® 2500 and XTS® 5000 portable radios and XTL® 2500 mobile radios. Each radio can be programmed to communicate with multiple field users, as well as dispatch center operators.
In addition, Lake County's Emergency Medical Services Dispatch Center now includes eight Motorola MC7500 dispatch consoles, and the Lake County Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center now also has eight Motorola MC7500 consoles that can communicate with Lake County field units in a clear or secure communication mode.
"Until July 2009, public safety organizations in Lake County lacked a means of dependable inter-agency communication," said Holcomb. "The Motorola system now enables emergency crews to quickly contact any emergency service within the county and other Central Florida first responders with the touch of a button to help improve the safety of our citizens."
The Lake County radio system connects all of the county's emergency service radios. The system allows for the coordination of all Lake County emergency response services, including the Lake County Sheriff's Office, Lake-Sumter Emergency Medical Services, Florida Highway Patrol, Lake County Fire Rescue and all local police and fire departments in 14 communities. Under the previous systems, Lake County emergency crews had three radios, one each to communicate with police, paramedics and firefighters. The new network also helps Lake County first responders communicate with agencies in surrounding counties, including Orange, Osceola, Marion, Polk and Seminole.
"Motorola has a long history of providing mission critical solutions to public safety throughout Florida, and Lake County's Project 25 system is another example of our commitment to Florida's first responders and the citizens they serve," said Marshall Wright, Motorola vice president. "This state-of-the-art digital radio system is providing public safety personnel throughout the county with the ability to communicate across all agencies in daily as well as crisis situations, as evidenced by the millions of calls already made."

ParkVu Announces Updates to Music WithMe BlackBerry App
Music WithMe Unites iTunes With BlackBerry Media Player for Seamless Music Listening Experience
LOUISVILLE, Ky., July 29 -- ParkVu, innovators in making media truly mobile, today announced new features and significant user experience enhancements for the Music WithMe BlackBerry* app. Simplifying music listening for a new generation of music lovers who want all their music on their smartphone, anytime, anywhere, Music WithMe wirelessly syncs users' iTunes playlists with their BlackBerry, via a cellular or Wi-Fi connection. No longer tethered to cables or a secondary music playing device, Music WithMe provides an easy way for smartphone owners to have their favorite music with them on the go.
"The user response we've received since launch has been phenomenal. BlackBerry owners love that they can get all their iTunes music on their smartphone wirelessly -- and they can use their BlackBerry media player for playback," said Jeff Fedor, co-CEO of ParkVu. "With the user in mind we have introduced new features to Music WithMe including an enhanced sync experience, making it even easier for BlackBerry owners to leave their digital music player at home and use their smartphone as their primary music listening device."
Using a cellular network or Wi-Fi connection, Music WithMe automatically and wirelessly downloads music files from users' iTunes collection to their BlackBerry smartphone. Now with the latest version, BlackBerry owners can track the status of their downloads. For each playlist, for example, users can see how many tracks have been uploaded to the cloud and how many have yet to be uploaded from iTunes. In addition, Music WithMe now has the ability to sync music libraries that are stored in network attached storage locations.
Music WithMe allows for remote wireless syncing and, unlike streaming solutions, once music is downloaded, no wireless connection is required meaning no more data is used -- saving money and battery power and providing a dependable music listening experience regardless of cellular reception. Tracks are downloaded directly to the BlackBerry memory card and are played as usual.
From within the app, users select which iTunes playlists they want stored on their BlackBerry smartphone. Music WithMe then works with iTunes on the PC to ensure that any changes made to the playlists are automatically reflected on their BlackBerry smartphone.
Music WithMe does not have to be open on the device to sync with iTunes. When the desired playlists are selected, the settings are stored directly on the BlackBerry smartphone. Using BlackBerry smartphone's native media player, users can listen to their favorite songs from iTunes directly on their device.
Music WithMe New Features
-- Playlist status display -- Number of playable tracks, not supported
tracks (video or DRM protected), tracks in the cloud, tracks needed
from iTunes, tracks that cannot be found
-- Support for music libraries that are stored in network attached
storage locations
-- Support for playlists with duplicate names -- user added "audiobooks"
or "recently added" playlist
-- Playlist selection preserved across devices and if app is reinstalled
-- Support for iTunes playlist folders
Availability
Music WithMe is available at BlackBerry App World for a one-time fee of $14.99 after a free 30-day trial.

Duracell Debuts Portable Universal Netbook AC Adapter
Versatile, Compact New AC Adapter is an Ideal Companion to Popular Netbooks
BETHEL, Conn., July 29 -- Duracell continues to provide consumers with power solutions that keep them connected to the devices they need the most with the launch of the new 40-Watt Universal Netbook AC Adapter. In keeping with the Duracell Smart Power initiative, the adapter is designed to maximize power efficiency and portability, making it an ideal accessory for today's popular mini-computers.
The demand for netbooks has exploded since first coming to market three years ago. In 2009, worldwide unit shipments of netbooks grew an astonishing 100.8%, according to market research firm iSuppli(1). The Duracell 40-Watt Universal Netbook AC Adapter offers netbook owners a compact and lightweight spare adapter that meets their portability needs. It includes four interchangeable voltage controlling tips to work with hundreds of netbook makes and models including Acer, Asus, Dell, HP/Compaq, Lenovo and more.
The user-friendly tips automatically switch between 12V and 19V, depending on the netbook's power requirement, ensuring that the correct and safe amount of voltage is delivered to the device every time. Weighing in at just nine ounces, the Duracell adapter is among the lightest on the market - making it easy to slip into the pocket, purse or computer bag, mirroring the portability of the netbook itself. It gives users dependable charging capacity at home, the office, school or at the airport - anywhere equipped with a standard AC wall outlet. The adapter is also energy-efficient, drawing less than .5W of electricity when plugged into the wall but not being used to power a netbook.
"Given the popularity of netbooks in recent years, we're offering consumers a convenient accessory to help keep their mini-computers charged up wherever they take them. The small size and versatility of the Duracell Universal Netbook Adapter enhances netbooks' portability for added convenience," said Bob Jacobs, Duracell marketing director-North America.
The Duracell 40-Watt Universal Netbook Adapter is available now at Amazon.com and TigerDirect.com for $49.99 MSRP. It will be available at WalMart.com, CompUSA.com, CircuitCity.com, CDW.com, Buy.com, Newegg.com, PCMall.com, OnSale.com and Zones.com beginning in August.

IBM Acquires Storage Company Storwize for Data Compression Capabilities
Industry-unique, real-time data compression technology helps IBM clients further improve storage efficiency, reduce storage requirements up to 80%
ARMONK, N.Y., July 29 -- IBM (NYSE:IBM) today announced it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Storwize, a privately held company based in Marlborough, MA. Storwize provides real-time data compression technology to help clients reduce physical storage requirements by up to 80% (1), which improves efficiency and lowers the cost of making data available for analytics and other applications. The acquisition is anticipated to close in the third quarter of 2010, subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Storwize has over one hundred customers such as Mobileye, Polycom Israel, Shopzilla, Inc. and Sumitomo Mitsui Construction across a wide range of industries including energy, manufacturing, finance, insurance, telecommunications and cloud services.
With Storwize, IBM is acquiring storage technology that is unique in the industry in that it can compress primary data, or data that clients are actively using, of multiple types -- from files to virtualization images to databases -- in real-time while maintaining performance. This is in contrast to other storage compression technologies that only compress secondary or backup data. By compressing primary data, Storwize users can store up to five times more data using the same amount of storage, preventing storage sprawl and lowering power and cooling costs.
This is important now more than ever as the world's data already vastly exceeds available storage space and enterprise demand for storage capacity worldwide is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of over 43% from 2008 to 2013, according to IDC (2).
Compression shrinks data so files and databases take up less space. Storwize's Random Access Compression Engine (RACE) is based on the industry-standard compression algorithm and uses Storwize's patented technology for real-time data compression without any performance degradation.
With Storwize, analytics applications can improve decision making by scanning many more years of historical data from multiple sources without the need to add additional storage equipment. Compressing data in real-time can also help make data available up to four times faster for transaction workloads (3).
Running Storwize data compression does not affect business and IT processes or other applications and does not require special skills to maintain. Product installation can be completed in as little as four hours, with little or no downtime.
"Real-time data compression helps address a significant client need -- making it affordable to analyze and make sense of massive amounts of data in order to provide new services," said Brian Truskowski, general manager, IBM System Storage and Networking. "By adding Storwize to our innovative portfolio of storage solutions, IBM is better equipped than ever to help clients handle growing quantities of data and make more of it available for analytics."
"IBM has the strongest vision for the future direction of storage and we are pleased to become a part of that vision," said Ed Walsh, CEO, Storwize. "Our customers will benefit significantly as our talented employees and innovative storage solutions merge with IBM's world-wide reach in sales, service and research and development."
Storwize joins other key IBM storage acquisitions and innovations that improve storage efficiency and analytics, including:
-- ProtecTIER deduplication technology that can be used together with
compression technology to significantly improve storage efficiency.
-- The XIV high-end disk storage architecture that provides the
performance needed to make data quickly available for analysis.
-- IBM's Scale-out Network Attached Storage (SONAS), invented by IBM
Research to support multiple petabytes of storage in a single file
system.
-- The IBM System Storage Easy Tier feature, which uses ongoing
performance monitoring to move only the most active data to faster
solid-state drives (SSDs) on IBM's flagship DS8700 disk storage
system.
The Storwize appliance will work with popular NAS systems, including IBM N series and SONAS, as well as non-IBM NAS systems from EMC, HP, NetApp and others. Storwize real-time compression can provide added value to clients already using data deduplication, thin provisioning and other storage efficiency technologies.
This acquisition continues IBM's investment in real-time compression, which has been proven for DB2 and Informix to reduce the overall total cost of information ownership by up to 80%.
About Storwize
Storwize provides online storage optimization through real-time data compression, delivering dramatic cost reduction without performance degradation. Based on the Storwize's Random Access Compression Engine(TM) (RACE), Storwize STN appliances transparently compress primary storage between 50 and 80 percent without changes in performance, storage, applications, networks, or processes. RACE ensures that Storwize appliances deliver real-time random access and deterministic, lossless data compression to maintain reliable and consistent performance and data integrity. Storwize helps slow the growth of storage acquisition and related storage life-cycle costs, including reducing the amount of storage to be managed, powered, and cooled. Storwize is headquartered in Marlborough, MA with offices worldwide. Storwize, optimize without compromise.

One in Three Top-Trending Search Topics Return Malicious Results, Finds Norton Study
New, Free Website Rating Tool, Norton Safe Web Lite, Protects Against Risky Search Results
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., July 29 -- According to a new Norton study, more than one in three of the top-trending search terms returned at least 10 percent malicious results, putting people's computers and personal information at risk from cybercrime. It turns out that between February and May, searching for "tropical dreams sweepstakes" could actually have been a nightmare, and searching for "red hot laugh riot" could have been anything but funny. At the peak of their popularity, these two particular search terms returned a staggering 99 malicious links out of the first 100 results.
This week, celebrity news, online gaming and diseases were among the most poisoned top-trending topics, with terms such as "constance francesca hilton," "atomic dove" and "melorheostosis" returning more than 45 percent malicious links out of the first 100 results.
To counter these search engine optimization (SEO) poisoned threats, Norton has introduced Norton Safe Web Lite, a free downloadable tool that identifies risky sites before users click on them in search results. Once downloaded from http://safeweb.norton.com/lite, Norton Safe Web Lite is accessible as a small toolbar within either Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. The free toolbar is powered by Norton Safe Web site-rating technology, which is included in Norton Internet Security and Norton 360. Catching risky results before clicking through is critical because nearly 60 percent of unsafe sites identified by Norton Safe Web are found to contain drive-by downloads - threats that can infect a PC without requiring the user to download or install files.
Additionally, the Norton Safe Web scanner for Facebook, which is also free, now offers a convenient "Enable Auto-Scan" option to identify any malicious links on users' news feeds. The Norton Safe Web scanner for Facebook is available at http://apps.facebook.com/nortonsafeweb.
"Cybercriminals are always looking for the next opportunity to find victims, as evidenced by the high volume of SEO poisoning. Unfortunately for consumers, simply searching for a popular topic and clicking on a poisoned link can have serious consequences," said Jens Meggers, vice president of engineering, Norton. "Consumers need to arm themselves with tools like Norton Safe Web Lite that are specifically designed to defend against these types of threats."
The Norton study monitored a major search engine's top 300 trending search terms and analyzed the top 30,000 search results daily for SEO poisoning over a three-month period, between February and May 2010. The search topics ran the gamut from sporting events to song lyrics to breaking news on criminal cases. Using unethical techniques to "game" search engine algorithms, hackers are poisoning search results, taking advantage of spikes in a topic's popularity to redirect computer users to misleading applications such as fake antivirus scanners. Some days, more than 250 of the top 300 daily search terms returned more than 10 percent malicious links within the first 100 results. Clicking on these poisoned search results could infect a user's PC and result in exposing personal information to cybercriminals.
About Norton Safe Web Lite
Norton Safe Web Lite is a free website rating tool designed to let users surf, search and shop online safely. Norton Safe Web servers crawl millions of websites and use signature-based file scanning, intrusion detection engines, behavioral detection and analysis to identify potentially dangerous sites directly from searches via a browser toolbar. The Norton Safe Web Lite toolbar is available for Windows XP, Windows 7 and Windows Vista users in English only, and works on Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher and Mozilla Firefox 3.0 or higher. All current users of Norton 360 or Norton Internet Security already receive a full-featured Norton toolbar as part of their subscription, which in addition to Norton Safe Web rating technology also provides built-in real-time antiphishing protection and Identity Safe, which helps manage logins and passwords.

The second will expand coverage on route 1 north of I-64 to the town of Oldtown in Greenup County. With 3G speeds now available in these areas, AT&T customers can surf the Web, download files faster, and enjoy the very latest interactive mobile applications.
"Consumers and business owners depend on reliable mobile communications more than ever before," said District 98 State Representative Tanya Pullin. "This investment in expanded wireless coverage is good for our economy, our quality of life and I look forward to continued expansion of these services."
"During the past several years, we've made substantial private investments to provide our customers across Kentucky with access to the kind of technology that will stimulate economic growth, inspire innovation and create jobs," said Mary Pat Regan, president, AT&T Kentucky. "We remain committed to working with our federal, state and local leaders to help create a positive economic environment that provides opportunities for companies to continue to invest aggressively in the region."
The new cell site is part of AT&T's ongoing efforts to extend its 3G wireless network - the fastest in the nation, according to independent testing. From 2007 through 2009, AT&T's total capital investment in its Kentucky wireless network was nearly $125 million.
"It's great to see investment coming to boost wireless coverage in Carter County," said District 96 State Representative Jill York. "Improved wireless connectivity helps create new opportunities for all of my constituents, residents and business owners alike."
"Our goal is pretty simple: we want our customers to have the same great network experience when they travel this summer as they have at home," said Erika K. Thompson-Kemp, vice president and general manager for AT&T in Virginia and West Virginia. "That means adding new cell sites and making other network enhancements so consumers stay connected on their AT&T device when they make a call, check an email or use AT&T Navigator to find the nearest hotel or gas station."
