Synaptics TouchPad(TM) Technology Extends into the Digital Living Room
New Digital Home Entertainment Usage Models Demand a More Intuitive User Interface for Remote Control Devices
SANTA CLARA, Calif., July 28 -- Synaptics Inc. (NASDAQ:SYNA), a leading developer of human interface solutions for mobile computing, communications, and entertainment devices, is helping to simplify the user experience in the digital living room with an adaption of its industry-leading TouchPad(TM) solution.
Improved digital home entertainment systems including cable and satellite set-top boxes, digital video recorders (DVR), and HD televisions have driven the media and entertainment usage model evolution with a wide range of features and programming, multiple layers of information, and complicated menu structures.
Synaptics is currently working with Philips Home Control, a leading wireless input and control solution provider, on implementing an optimized hardware-level specification for TouchPad technology that provides easy integration into remote control devices to improve the usability of these complicated user interfaces and increase the interaction between users and content. TouchPad technology allows users to navigate a cursor, scroll through menus and media libraries, and make selections similar to how they would on a PC notebook in a highly-productive, intuitive, and efficient manner.
"We believe that our touch technology will significantly improve the entertainment experience in a transition similar to what we have seen in the mobile space -- increased data and content on smartphones required a dynamic, touch-oriented, and gesture-based interface," said Mark Vena, senior vice president and general manager of Synaptics' PC division. "In the digital living room, remote control devices can benefit from intuitive capacitive touch interaction such as pointing or scrolling gestures. New usage models for entertainment such as Google TV and Windows 7 Media Center will bring more functionality, content, and complexity to the media experience such that button controls will not provide a friendly user experience."
Microsoft, Logitech, Sony, and Medion have utilized Synaptics TouchPad technology in the remote control category for several years, originating with Synaptics' "Boomerang" concept remote control in 2007. Synaptics believes that the adoption of its TouchPad and gesture technology in the remote control device category will experience initial momentum with bundled remotes (e.g. combined with set-top boxes or HDTVs) where advanced functionality is more widely available.

CUPERTINO, Calif., July 28 -- Apple® today released Safari® 5.0.1, turning on Safari Extensions and introducing the Safari Extensions Gallery. Apple introduced extensions support in Safari 5 in June so developers could begin creating extensions with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript web standards. With Safari Extensions Gallery, users can quickly find extensions that add powerful new features to Safari, from toolbars that display live web feeds to sophisticated programs that filter web content. Safari 5.0.1 allows users to download and install extensions either from the Safari Extensions Gallery or directly from a developer's site.
"Safari 5 has been a big hit, and user response to the innovative new Safari Reader has been fantastic," said Brian Croll, Apple's vice president of OS X Product Marketing. "We're thrilled to see so many leading developers creating great extensions and think our users are going to love being able to customize Safari."
"Millions of our customers already use Amazon Wish Lists to store items they want to buy for themselves or receive as gifts," said Gianna Puerini, vice president of Worldwide Design and Community at Amazon.com. "With Safari 5, we were able to quickly build the Add to Amazon Wish List extension that lets customers add items from any website to their Amazon Wish List with the click of a button."
"We're excited to continue working closely with Apple to bring visually compelling Bing experiences to Safari," said Jeff Henshaw, general manager of Bing User Experience. "The Bing Extension for Safari brings Bing search intelligence to everyday browsing with Safari. When a user selects text in Safari, Bing instantly recognizes what they might need and pops up helpful, informative tips, from real time maps and driving directions to real time translations to direct web search results."
"Using web standard technologies and Safari's extension builder, we developed an MLB.com extension to give fans another way to consume up-to-the-moment baseball content, including live look-ins to games, right from the Safari toolbar," said Noah Garden, executive vice president, Commerce and Sponsorship at MLB.com.
"Our extension for Safari is a great way for readers to get all of the latest breaking news and all the important stories, blogs and columns they want to see," said Denise Warren, general manager, NYTimes.com at The New York Times Company. "While you browse other sites in Safari, our extension checks for updates and slides in new headlines and thumbnails, so you won't miss a thing."
"Creating our Twitter extension in Safari couldn't have been easier," said Jason Goldman, vice president of Product at Twitter. "By providing features like the ability to tweet about a page and view trending topics, we've created a simple way to deliver relevant, interesting content to people regardless of where they are on the web."
The Safari Extensions Gallery is accessible from the Safari menu or at extensions.apple.com. Users can download and install extensions from the gallery with a single click, and there's no need to restart the browser. Extensions can be automatically updated and are easily managed within Safari. Users can enable or disable individual extensions, or turn off all extensions with one click.
Safari Extensions are built with HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript web standards, and can have all the power and functionality of advanced web applications. Every Safari Extension is signed with a digital certificate from Apple to prevent tampering and to verify that updates to the extension are from the original developer. Safari Extensions are sandboxed, so they can't access information on a user's system or communicate with websites aside from those specified by the developer. For increased stability, Safari Extensions run solely in the browser.
Safari 5 also features Safari Reader, which presents single and multipage articles on the web in a new, scrollable view without distracting content or clutter. The Nitro JavaScript engine runs JavaScript up to 30 percent faster than Safari 4.* Built on the open source WebKit engine developed by Apple, Safari 5 includes more than a dozen powerful new HTML5 features for creating media-rich experiences, like full screen playback and closed captions for HTML5 video.

Concord Hospital Expands Its Trapeze Networks Wireless LAN, Improving Patient Safety and Quality
One of New Hampshire's Busiest Acute Care Hospitals Boosts Mobile Wi-Fi Capabilities for End-to-End Quality-of-Service
PLEASANTON, Calif., July 28 -- Trapeze Networks, a Belden Brand (NYSE:BDC) and leader in enterprise wireless LAN equipment and management software, today announced its new Trapeze solution provides the reliability that Concord Hospital requires to expand its host of mission-critical, progressive mobile applications.
With exponential organizational growth and an influx of new mobile technologies, Concord Hospital needs to rely increasingly on its wireless network for mobility applications that contribute to the overall quality of patient care. With clustering, scalability and 802.11n support, Trapeze gives Concord Hospital's IT department 100% confidence that its suite of essential wireless applications will run flawlessly.
Trapeze President Dhrupad Trivedi said, "Trapeze Networks is honored to contribute to Concord Hospital's overall excellence. Our highly-available and reliable wireless networks prepare Concord Hospital's medical staff teams to successfully work in a mobile, collaborative and instantaneous environment."
Grow the Wireless Enterprise with Trapeze Wireless LAN Technology
Concord Hospital is constantly growing and always expanding. The scalability of the Trapeze Networks solution lets Concord Hospital support 3,200 employees, which includes 750+ physicians and nurses throughout Concord Hospital's main campus and ten plus remote sites which serve over 145,000 residents. The Trapeze Networks clustering and hitless failover techniques simplify adds, moves and changes and has reduced operating costs up to 60%.
"We're extremely diligent in selecting and implementing sophisticated technology that enhances the quality, efficiency and safety of patient care," said Mark Starry, director of enterprise architecture and security at Concord Hospital. "Trapeze Networks is the only company with instant failover capabilities in its wireless controllers so AP traffic is immediately picked up by another controller if one fails - without any effect on performance or availability. Trapeze Networks' hitless failover approach is the main reason why we now feel that the availability of our myriad of wireless voice and video applications is approaching the five 9s level of availability that our core wired network provides."
Concord Hospital Goes Wireless Everywhere
Mobile wireless access is needed almost everywhere with almost everything at Concord Hospital. New Alaris IV pumps (http://www.alarismed.com) and ultrasound equipment are accessible through wireless connectivity. Wireless VoIP technology provides instant access in real-time to pertinent patient information from nearly every procedure and patient room. Guests have access to the Internet through Concord Hospital's Webguest application.
The wireless network has to be reliable enough to send important voice-recognized messages and critical alerts from health care information systems. Concord Hospital uses other innovative wireless applications such as, Tandberg Video Conferencing (http://www.tandberg.com), for real time-high definition video consults from physicians at remote specialty hospitals, DeafTalk (http://www.deaf-talk.com), a bedside video-conference application so hard-of-hearing patients can use translation services and successfully communicate with medical staff and McKesson Horizon Clinicals (http://www.mckesson.com) for bedside medication reconciliation to eliminate medication errors.
VoIP Wireless with Trapeze Networks
One of Concord Hospital's primary wireless applications includes mobile voice-recognition badges from Vocera (http://www.vocera.com). All medical and support staff wear Vocera communications badges for instant voice communication between care providers and alert notifications from equipment such glucometers in the labs and Ultrasound and EKG machines. Trapeze Networks' solutions give the resiliency and redundancy important for wireless VoIP to be as dependable as the hospital's wired VoIP telephony. Trapeze Networks Mobility System Software(TM) (MSS) with RingMaster® allows Concord Hospital to effectively manage the network from one console, including setting traffic priorities on the wireless network so VoIP wireless transmissions take precedent over other data-driven applications.
"The benefit of a wearable communications system, such as Vocera, is the immediate access to critical resources enabling faster, better decisions making across the care continuum," said Brent Lang, chief operating officer for Vocera. "A robust, resilient network, as provided to the Concord Hospital by Trapeze Networks, assures critical communication and delivery of alarms occurs immediately, expediting responsiveness and patient care."
Throughout the specification, design and roll-out of the enhanced wireless network, Integration Partners (http://www.integrationpartners.com), a solution provider in Lexington, MA, worked closely with technical teams from Concord Hospital and Trapeze Networks. Principal and Co-Founder of Integration Partners Bart Graf said, "With the deployment of the Trapeze solution, Concord Hospital can now ensure all their robust wireless applications are guaranteed to operate without any performance degradation. In the future, we look forward to implementing a full conversion to 802.11n to reduce the amount of cabling in the network's core and to further enhance performance."

Long Term Care Insurance Goes Online; Reducing Paper Flow, Leading Agency Offers Applications by Internet
KIRKLAND, Wash., July 28 -- If you're in the market for long term care insurance but hate to fill out applications and wait, wait, wait, a leading agency has an alternative for you. Dispense with the paper and the delay; complete an electronic application, with live hand-holding, and get an answer pronto. The agency is LTC Financial Partners LLC (LTCFP), one of the nation's most experienced long term care insurance agencies.
The move beyond paper extends LTCFP's earlier move toward technological efficiency. In June, 2008, the company announced "going green" to save time and millions of gallons of gasoline per year -- through telephone interviews in place of the traditional in-home interview. The program offered convenience to consumers and doubled the productivity of some of LTCFP's agents, which numbered in the hundreds. In addition, the program eliminated long, gas-guzzling drives to consumers' homes. There was still that pesky paper application form to fill out, though. Here's how the new process works:
1. While on the phone with one of LTCFP's state-certified agents, you indicate you'd like to save time by submitting your application electronically.
2. If the policy you want supports electronic applications, the agent asks you questions and fills in the blanks on an Internet form via his or her computer. Acting as your "Internet chauffeur," the agent does all the work for you.
3. Once you've supplied all the necessary information, the electronic application is immediately transmitted to the insurance carrier for review. Often times, your application will be approved or declined within a few days, versus the 30 to 60 days it typically takes for a traditional paper policy.
LTCFP represents several long term care insurance carriers. Just one of them, LifeSecure Insurance Company, currently supports electronic applications in the broad market. "But going paperless is the wave of the future," says Denise Gott, LTCFP's Chairman of the Board. "In good time, we expect more of our carriers to offer the electronic application option. Another is already providing it on a limited basis."
A list of LTCFP's agents may be found on the company's website: http://www.ltcfp.com/. Currently LifeSecure serves 44 states. Working with multiple carriers, LTCFP serves individuals and organizations in all 50 states.

Panasonic Unveils the World's First 3D Consumer Camcorder, Complete With a 3D Conversion Lens*1
New Panasonic HDC-SDT750 Shoots 3D Video Ready to Play Back on 3D-Capable Televisions, Perfect for Creating a 3D Entertainment Ecosystem at Home
SECAUCUS, N.J., July 27 -- Panasonic today announced the launch of the Panasonic HDC-SDT750, the world's first consumer 3D camcorder, which includes a 3D conversion lens*1 that enables the camcorder to shoot powerful and true-to-life 3D video content. The Panasonic SDT750 is a user-friendly consumer 3D camcorder that makes experiencing 3D at home easy and affordable*2. In addition to shooting 3D, the SDT750 can record full 1080p High Definition (HD) in AVCHD, when the 3D conversion lens is unattached, and includes powerful features such as a 3MOS system, a Leica Dicomar lens and a 12x optical zoom.
"As a result of research conducted through Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory, Panasonic developed a professional 3D system camera and successfully brought high-quality Full HD 3D images to the home for viewing on Panasonic VIERA Full HD 3D televisions. But now, Panasonic has taken it one step further and developed the world's first consumer 3D camcorder, the HDC-SDT750 - creating a 3D ecosystem available for consumers in the home," said Chris Rice, Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company. "Incorporating Panasonic's professional broadcast technology and bringing it to an easy-to-use consumer model, the SDT750 makes high-quality 3D video content a reality in the home."
To shoot 3D video with the Panasonic HDC-SDT750 camcorder, the user needs to attach the 3D conversion lens that comes included, to record dynamic images. The specially-designed 3D conversion lens records right-eye and left-eye images simultaneously through its two lenses, thus resulting in video that can be viewed in 3D. The right and left images (each with 960 x 1080 pixels) that enter through the lenses are recorded using the side-by-side method.
The Panasonic SDT750 features a Time Lapse Recording feature, which plays a scene such as a sunset or a blooming flower at an accelerated speed, similar to a fast-forward. By setting the recording interval to 1 second, 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute or 2 minutes, the user can view an otherwise long recording in a reduced time period. For example, when a scene is recorded at the 1-second interval setting, a 10-minute sunset scene can be played back in approximately 10 seconds, making the slow change in the subject appear as if it were taking place in a very short time. This interval recording feature is also available when the 3D conversion lens is attached to the SDT750.
Panasonic offers a 5.1-channel audio recording sound system that uses five microphones, so when voices are recorded from the front, right, left and back are played on a 5.1-channel home cinema system, users are surrounded by clear, detailed sound that makes them feel as if they are right in the middle of the action. The Focus Microphone function, which has been made possible by five highly-directional microphones, picks up the sounds from sources in the area in front of the camcorder, regardless of whether the lens is focusing on a near or distant object. It also allows footage recorded in 3D to be enjoyed with lifelike and dynamic sounds.
The high-sensitivity 3MOS System has 7.59 million effective motion image pixels (2.53 megapixels x 3), so this advanced image sensor separates the light received through the lens into the three primary colors - red, green and blue - and processes each color independently. As a result, the Panasonic SDT750 produces beautiful images with rich color quality, detail and gradation. Adding to the quality, the SDT750 also features a large-diameter (46mm) F1.5*3 Leica Dicomar lens and Crystal Engine PRO, a high-speed processing unit - both components which contribute to the effectiveness of the camcorder's light gathering, increased sensitivity, and reduced noise when shooting, even in dim lighting.
Users can play back 3D videos recorded on the Panasonic HDC-SDT750 on 3D-capable televisions, such as Panasonic VIERA® Full HD 3D televisions, including the TC-P50VT25, TC-P54VT25, TC-P58VT25, TC-P65VT25 and the TC-P50VT20 models. Playback using a VIERA TV is done by connecting the 3D camcorder to the television using an HDMI cable. In addition, it is also possible to play 3D images recorded on SD Memory Cards by using an AVCHD compatible player,*4 such as a Panasonic 3D Blu-ray Disc player - the DMP-BDT350 or DMP-BDT300 models are currently available. When watching 3D content recorded by the SDT750 on any of the Panasonic Full HD 3D VIERA televisions, users can view the true-to-life content and the VIERA television will automatically engage the side-by-side method for smooth viewing of 3D content - no change of settings necessary.
The SDT750 comes with HD Writer AE 2.6T PC editing software, which allows users to easily edit recorded 3D images, and save them onto PCs or Blu-ray/DVD discs. HD Writer AE 2.6T features a "Smart Wizard" that starts as soon as the SDT750 is connected to the USB port of the computer, which gives simple on-screen guidance. HD Writer AE 2.6T also enables easy uploading and sharing online without the need for any cumbersome processes, so that even an inexperienced user can post video clips on the web. When uploading 3D images from a PC onto the web, they must first be converted into 2D images.
Even without the 3D conversion lens attached, the Panasonic SDT750 is an innovative and high-performance Full HD camcorder that is equipped with a wide range of sophisticated functions, including the 3MOS System, which features improved noise reduction (NR) technologies, and a wide-variety of manual adjustments controlled by a manual ring for easy, creative shooting. The manual ring provides convenient, fingertip control of the focus, zoom, exposure (iris), shutter speed and white balance settings. Using the ring is extremely intuitive, comfortable, and user-friendly. Only the white balance setting is available when the 3D conversion lens is attached. The SDT750 can shoot 1,080/60p recording (Full-HD 1,920 x 1,080, 60 progressive recording) and produces rich expressive images, with no detail loss and flickering.
Panasonic's Intelligent Auto (iA) function makes the SDT750 extremely easy to use. When the 3D lens is not attached and iA is engaged, the SDT750 automatically selects the most suitable shooting mode with the press of a button. While shooting HD video, the Panasonic SDT750's iA function offers the following six functions: Face Recognition, the new HYBRID O.I.S., AF/AE Tracking, Intelligent Scene Selector, Face Detection and Intelligent Contrast Control. HYBRID O.I.S., a new feature, provides extremely accurate hand-shake correction with its four-axis blur detection, resulting in steady images while zooming or shooting on the move.
Other features of the Panasonic HDC-SDT750 include:
-- Auto Power LCD automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen
according to the shooting environment for comfortable use in a variety
of different lighting situations.
-- Large 3.0" touch-screen LCD allows icons to be easily operated by
touching them with a fingertip. On the LCD, recorded 3D images are
displayed only as the 2D images that were recorded with the left lens.
-- Eco Mode automatically turns off the power when the camcorder is not
operated for five minutes, reducing wasteful energy use and saving
battery power.
-- Pre-Rec allows for the camcorder to continuously record three seconds
of content into internal memory. Then, when the record button is
pressed, the three seconds immediately prior will have been recorded.
The Panasonic HDC-SDT750 will be available in October 2010 with a suggested retail price of $1,399.95. For more information on Panasonic camcorders, please visit: http://www.panasonic.com/dvc.

Panasonic Announces Development of World's First* Interchangeable 3D Lens for LUMIX G Micro System**
SECAUCUS, N.J., July 27 -- Continuing its record of 3D technology leadership, Panasonic today announced the development of the world's first* digital interchangeable twin-lens, making it possible to shoot 3D with an interchangeable lens system camera. As a new member of Panasonic's powerful lineup of interchangeable lenses as part of the LUMIX G Micro System**, the twin-lens will allow high-quality shooting in 3D. Panasonic plans to release this new lens for sale before the end of the year.
"This year will be remembered as the 'First Year of 3D Era' and Panasonic has already taken the lead by launching 3D-capable VIERA(TM) televisions and Blu-ray(TM) 3D Disc Players," said Darin Pepple, Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company. "With Panasonic's development of a twin-lens capable of 3D shooting, the company is providing consumers with a way to capture their own 3D content, which they can then enjoy watching in the comforts of their own home. Panasonic is dedicated to evolving the 3D ecosystem, letting consumers create and display lifelike 3D images in their homes."
Currently, 3D shooting with an interchangeable lens system camera is possible only by using panorama systems or by combining two lenses and two CCDs. However, these systems are not ideal and have difficulty capturing moving objects. Panasonic's new 3D lens for the LUMIX G Micro System features two optical systems installed within the diameter of the lens mount, creating stereo images from the left and right lenses that are then processed with a 3D image processing system. Thanks to Panasonic's advanced technologies in optical technology, image processing systems, and lens barrel design, the 3D lens will be compact in size.
This new compact 3D-capable interchangeable lens will be easy to handle and allow instant 3D shooting, without distortion or time lag between left and right images - even when shooting moving objects.
*For a digital interchangeable lens of July 28, 2010.
** Compatible models to be announced at a later date.

Panasonic Expands Its Award Winning Line of Full HD 3D Blu-ray Disc Players
DMP-BDT100 Joins Panasonic's Family of Full HD 3D Home Entertainment
SECAUCUS, N.J., July 27 -- Panasonic, an industry leader in Full HD 3D technology, announced today the expansion of its line of Full HD 3D Blu-ray(TM) Disc players to include the DMP-BDT100. The DMP-BDT100, available in August, joins the DMP-BDT300 and DMP-BDT350 in providing superior 2D and 3D picture quality, as well as such innovative features as VIERA CAST(TM) internet functionality. Pricing will be announced at a later date.
The BDT100 continues the commitment to excellence established by the BDT350 which made its US debut at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show, where it received the esteemed Innovations Award for 3D technology.
"From the beginning, Panasonic has led the way into the 3D era with end-to-end solutions ranging from our critically-acclaimed Full HD 3D VIERA Plasma TVs and 3D Blu-ray Disc Players, to professional 3D camcorders and our work with Hollywood studios on the authoring of Full HD Blu-ray 3D video content," said Richard Simone, Vice President, Panasonic Networking Group. "The addition of the BDT100 3D Blu-ray Disc Player to our line-up marks one of many planned expansions of our 3D offerings designed to give consumers more options and greater access to the immersive world of 3D entertainment for the home."
The BDT100 outputs stunning and immersive Full HD 3D imagery to compatible HD displays. The player also handles a wide variety of audio standards, and upconverts all standard definition video formats to 1080p, the highest-possible video resolution. For nearly 20 years, Panasonic has maintained a base in Hollywood, via Panasonic Hollywood Laboratory, where it has actively studied and created high quality image reproduction technologies in tandem with a number of leading movie studios. Many of the advanced image technologies originally cultivated by Panasonic through this experience are incorporated in the DMP-BDT100. Based on these technologies, the DMP-BDT100 reproduces the ultimate in 3D images, rendering them extremely faithful to the original movies.
In addition to producing superb picture and audio quality, the DMP-BDT100, like the BDT350, also features VIERA CAST, Panasonic's proprietary internet functionality, which brings a variety of streaming services including NETFLIX(TM), Amazon VOD(TM), Pandora®, Twitter and YouTube(TM) Videos into the living room. Wireless LAN capability(*1) eliminates the need to connect a LAN cable, so the DMP-BDT100 can be used without having to worry about the length of the cable.
Users can also watch 2D images (JPEG) and movies (AVCHD(*2)/MPEG2(*2)) from digital cameras and camcorders via the integrated SD card and USB slot, as well as 3D Content shot by a Panasonic HDC-SDT750 Camcorder.
Ease of use remains a major consumer concern and the BDT100 addresses the issue of boot up time by reducing the time to 0.5-second.
As a green innovation company, Panasonic also focuses on important environmental issues in its production system. For example, the single chip LSI, UniPhier, is used for image signal processing. Unification of this chip helps to lower power consumption and achieve a more compact design (reducing the DMP-BDT100 size by 1-17/32 inches(*3)) while also decreasing the burden on the environment by using limited natural resources more efficiently.

The Panasonic TA1 can record still photos with up to eight Megapixels. The TA1 can also cut still images out of a video clip during editing. There is no need to connect any other device or to load the video into a PC for editing. To cut out and save a still image, simply press the Still Picture button when the desired image appears on the TA1's 2.0" LCD monitor. A unique feature for mobile video cameras, the Panasonic TA1 includes a built-in LED light**, which comes in handy when shooting in dimly-lit situations, such as indoors.
The TA1 has an integrated USB terminal with pre-loaded software that allows recorded video clips and still images to be easily loaded into a PC, edited, and then uploaded to popular sharing websites. When the TA1 is connected to the PC's USB slot, its built-in software, HD Writer PE 1.0, automatically launches, enabling one-touch loading of data into the PC for editing. The TA1 records MPEG-4 AVC file format (MP4), which offers excellent PC compatibility and is ideal for viewing clear, high-resolution images on a PC or distributing them over a network.
Other features of the Panasonic HM-TA1 include:

Panasonic Introduces Their Lightest*1 Full-HD Consumer Camcorder That Is Also a Web Cam for Video Chatting
New 35.8mm Wide-Angle Lens*3, 23x Intelligent Zoom and Advanced Optical Technology Make the Panasonic HDC-SDX1 Ideal for High-Quality Video Shooting
SECAUCUS, N.J., July 27 -- Today Panasonic introduces the new HDC-SDX1, the world's lightest*1 full-High Definition (HD) camcorder, featuring an ultra-compact body and weighing in at just under 0.41 lbs. With its stylish and lightweight design, the new Panasonic SDX1 features a 35.8mm wide-angle lens*2, 23x Intelligent Zoom and can also double as a Web camera with built-in capabilities for Internet video calling.
"With the addition of the SDX1, Panasonic has given consumers a versatile camcorder that can be used not only for high-quality video shooting, but also sharing these precious recorded moments with family and friends who may be far away," said Chris Rice, Senior Product Manager, Imaging, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company. "We do our best to provide products that adapt to the ever-changing world of technology and this model does just that - it's a camcorder that shoots high-quality video, using its incredible zooming capabilities and advanced optical technology - while providing consumers with the ability to make video calls from a computer."
The Panasonic HDC-SDX1 also features a newly-developed HYBRID Optical Image Stabilization system (O.I.S.), an image stabilization system that provides optical and electrical hand-shake correction. This system specifically helps when zooming, making it possible to record beautiful videos. In addition to the HYBRID O.I.S. system, the SDX1 provides even more powerful hand-shake correction with O.I.S. Lock. By pressing the O.I.S. Lock button on the LCD monitor, the blur detection sensitivity is maximized and other camera movements are detected and corrected.
While compact in size and light in weight, the SDX1 is packed with advanced features. It has full-HD AVCHD recording capabilities with outstanding 1920 x 1080*4 image quality, and records in the PC-friendly MP4 format. Its 35.8mm wide-angle setting is optimal for recording portraits indoors, as well as sweeping landscapes and even allows for voices to be clearly recorded at far distances. The Intelligent Zoom function which was achieved with the Intelligent Resolution technology of the newly-evolved image processing LSI, makes it possible to take telephoto shots with zoom power up to 23x.
Panasonic's Intelligent Auto (iA) mode automatically selects the most suitable of six shooting modes at the simple press of a button. These include Face Recognition, the new HYBRID O.I.S., AF/AE Tracking, Intelligent Scene Selector, Face Detection and Intelligent Contrast Control.
-- Face Recognition finds the registered faces of subjects and
automatically optimizes the focus and exposure, while continuously
tracking them as they move around within the LCD frame.
-- HYBRID O.I.S. provides more accurate hand-shake correction with its
four-axis blur detection, helping to steady images even when zooming
or shooting a moving subject.
-- AF/AE Tracking tracks a moving subject to make sure it's recorded in
optimal image quality. The normal Auto mode adjusts the focus and
exposure for a subject at the center of the screen. With AF/AE
Tracking, the user "locks on" to a subject by simply touching the LCD
screen.
-- Intelligent Scene Selector detects the situation and switches the
scene mode accordingly.
-- Face Detection captures faces beautifully even in dim or backlit
scenes.
-- Intelligent Contrast Control prevents blown highlights and blocked
shadows to retain natural, highly-nuanced images with proper contrast.
-- Touch Screen Operation with a 2.7-inch wide LCD monitor.
The Panasonic HDC-SDX1 will be available in black in September 2010 with a suggested retail price of $499.95. For more information on Panasonic camcorders, please visit http://www.panasonic.com/dvc.
*1 As of July 1, 2010. For a consumer-use AVCHD 1080i HD digital video camera. 185 grams without supplied battery and optional SD card. 229 grams with (supplied) battery and (optional) SD
*2 35mm camera equivalent.

Pennsylvania Securities Commission Adds On-line Tool Research to Investment Advisers
HARRISBURG, Pa., July 27 -- As investors grow more cautious about how and with whom they invest their money during the current Recession, the Pennsylvania Securities Commission (PSC) has made it easier for the public to research the backgrounds of advisers and firms before investing.
The PSC website (http://www.psc.state.pa.us) now includes a complete listing of all securities firms (both broker-dealers and investment advisers) registered to do business in Pennsylvania. To simplify an investor's research of advisers, the PSC also offers a direct link to the SEC's Investment Adviser Public Disclosure (IAPD) database for each adviser listed. The IAPD files provide extensive information about the registrations of investment advisers, which includes services offered, fees charged, education and business background of principals, conflicts of interest, discretionary authority, as well as reportable disciplinary history. It also offers a direct link in order to research a firm's representatives. The IAPD will provide investors with not only the capability to thoroughly research a firm, but to actually compare firms on-line.
As of June 30, 2010, 2,374 broker-dealers, 16,864 securities representatives, 2, 695 investment advisers, and 11,973 investment adviser representatives were registered to do business in Pennsylvania.
"The on-line tool will allow the public to research their current advisers or help them in choosing a new one," said PSC Chairman Robert Lam. "The IAPD enables an investor to see the actual forms and information that adviser firms have filed with regulators. This is a significant event since the research tool is not available in many other states. Pennsylvania is one of the first states to offer this service and it's part of our on-going effort to be of service to the average investors."
The PSC is responsible for reviewing all of the applications filed by prospective securities firms seeking permission to do business in Pennsylvania, including broker-dealers, securities representatives, investment advisers and investment adviser representatives.
"Technology allows us to provide better service to the residents of the Commonwealth and to assure the public accurate information about all securities related business," said Paul Schwartz, Director of Licensing for the PSC. "Because people are understandably worried about the safety of their investments in today's market, the PSC is pleased to be able to provide one more tool for investors to make an educated decision and to possibly avoid scams."
McGraw-Hill Education Launches Online Assessment Platform With Unique Speech Recognition Technology to Accelerate English Language Learning in China
SHANGHAI, July 27 -- McGraw-Hill, a global innovator in education, together with its local partner ChinaEdu, announced it has created the English Online System (EOS), a pioneering digital platform delivering high quality, research-based assessments aligned with Chinese New English Curriculum standards that will serve China's middle school students. The new EOS online platform will serve China's large and fast-growing education market, estimated to reach $200 billion this year.
"China's transition to a more service-oriented knowledge economy is creating substantial demand for innovative, research-based academic programs and assessments that can help students and professionals learn the English skills needed to be successful in the workplace," said Harold McGraw III, chairman, president and chief executive officer of The McGraw-Hill Companies (NYSE:MHP), who is in China this week meeting with government and business leaders. "We are committed to supporting China's ambitious education curriculum reform and development goals, and we are excited about expanding our English education programs across the country."
The EOS platform was created in partnership with ChinaEdu, a leading educational services provider in China, in which The McGraw-Hill Companies has an equity investment. The platform provides standardized American English language proficiency assessments and is based on a new approach, which allows teachers and students to automatically track progress. EOS is specifically designed to expand student knowledge of the English language in a real-life context by improving listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. In addition, an automatic scoring engine evaluates English speaking proficiency of Chinese students compared to American English speakers.
The EOS speaking test combines state-of-the-art speech recognition technology with Artificial Intelligence English speaking scoring rubrics that mimic human raters. EOS is the only English language assessment in China that was developed with the Chinese learner in mind. The acoustic model was developed using both American and Chinese students' voice samples. This approach allows accurate evaluation of Chinese learners' English pronunciation and speaking ability against native speakers.
The EOS platform has been field tested with Chinese students, and has proven to be an effective method of teaching and assessing English language skills used in educational and professional settings.

Vulkano - World's First Universal and Affordable Video Platform for Smartphones, PC/Macs, iPads and TVs
Vulkano Integrates Multiple Disruptive Technologies - DVR, Web Video, Place Shifting, Universal Plug and Play Streaming and Mobile Video Recording - Eliminating Multiple Boxes
SAN MATEO, Calif., July 27 -- Monsoon Multimedia, a leading provider of video convergence products, today announced it is now taking pre-orders for Vulkano, which is shipping in early August 2010. Vulkano is a sleek consumer device as easy to set up as a video game console. Vulkano is a tightly integrated hardware and software platform that has a powerful video processor and local storage. Vulkano in addition to replacing multiple boxes such as TiVo, Slingbox and Roku provides significant other benefits and energy savings, giving consumers tremendous performance at a low cost. Cost of a Vulkano ranges from $259 to $379, depending on storage capacity.
When connected to a set-top box and a TV, Vulkano enables a complete video experience across Android, Blackberry, iPhones, iPads, Macs, PCs and the living room TV. Vulkano allows users for the first time to experience their TV channels, videos and photos on whichever screen they want, when they want it. Vulkano will be sold through Monsoon's http://www.myvulkano.com, Amazon.com, leading retailers and etailers, and through strategic OEMs.
By downloading a free software application on to their device from http://www.myvulkano.com, or for iPhone/iPad from the Apple App store and installing a Vulkano, consumers can watch and control any home TV channel through a wired, Wi-Fi or 3G connection from anywhere in the world. They can schedule a recording through an included EPG (electronic program guide) and transfer and watch these recordings at any time on their TV, computers, smartphones or iPad type devices. Software players for PCs/Macs and iPads also come with Pause/Live functions.
Vulkano lets users watch YouTube on their big screen TV. Moreover, by using a technology called UPnP (Universal Plug n Play), Vulkano users can stream video and photos from their smartphones, computers and cameras wirelessly on to their living room TV without having to use messy cables. In the near future, Vulkano will offer free service upgrades such as Google TV, Yahoo! Widgets, Netflix, Hulu and others.
TV set-top boxes are commonplace in households today with over 210 million shipped in 2009 alone, according to analyst firm In-Stat. The fundamental flaw in nearly all set-top boxes is that they are "closed." Vulkano "opens" these boxes by allowing consumers to enjoy a total video experience on their smartphones, iPads, PCs and Macs, or access services such as Netflix or YouTube.
"The combination of mobile video recording on iPads/smartphones, viewing YouTube on big screen TV, DVR and Universal Plug and Play streaming changes the television and web video experience in ways never before imagined," said Colin Stiles, EVP Sales and Marketing at Monsoon. "We are proud to the be first to deliver your live and recorded TV content immediately with a simple screen tap. Whether in your backyard or on an international flight, you'll have your favorite programming available anywhere, anytime - live or recorded."
"We designed Vulkano from the ground up to replace single purpose solutions, such as TiVo, Roku, Slingbox, etc," said Steve Stone, CTO at Monsoon. "In the coming months we will be pushing new apps to Vulkano owners for free so they can rest assured that this is the first and last product they'll need for all their TV and Internet media needs."
Mobile Video Recording (MVR): By using Vulkano's unique MVR technology, consumers can schedule and record content from any TV channel on to the Vulkano's local storage and either on demand or automatically transfer the content to smartphones, computers or iPads/iPod touches. A wired, Wi-Fi or 3G connection is required and an included EPG can be used. For instance, iPad owners can schedule a recording before going to sleep and have it automatically downloaded to the iPad. It is then ready for watching anytime, anywhere at a cafe, airport, airplane, office or in one's bed. Hundreds of recorded movies, sports events or TV shows can be stored on the 64GB iPad for viewing anytime. PC, Mac and iPad apps also come with Direct Record, Pause and Live functions.
Place Shifting Live TV: Consumers can watch and control their home TV or TiVo from anywhere in the world, including their home.
Digital Video Recording (DVR): Users can select programs to be recorded to the Vulkano SD card or optional hard drive, which can store over a thousand programs depending on memory size. Once recorded, the programs can be downloaded to computers, smartphones or played back on living room TVs. Vulkano also allows a consumer to schedule recordings through a TiVo or other DVRs that may be built into a set-top box.
Web Video: Vulkano supports YouTube content (up to 1080p) streaming and progressive downloading for a big screen TV experience. Future software releases will add support for Netflix, Cinema Now, Amazon and free media content providers. Yahoo! Widgets will be released later this year and Google TV early next year. A fully functional web browser with media extensions (including HTML5 media support) will be released later this year.
Universal Plug and Play (UPnP): Consumers can easily enjoy photos, video and music stored on smartphones, iPads, PCs and Macs on a big screen TV by deploying industry standard UPnP technology. This capability also enables multiple UPnP devices, such as video cameras, to play directly on the TV eliminating the tedious job of plugging and unplugging cables into the TV.
State of the Industry
Hundreds of millions of TV set-top boxes worldwide are "closed" preventing consumers from accessing new services and exciting video experiences. Due to the cost and logistics involved in constantly upgrading these boxes, companies cannot keep pace with the rapid changes in technology. The result is an array of single feature boxes resolving specific issues.
Consumers today are saddled with paying for TiVo, Sling, Roku, Vudu, Apple TV and other single solutions to address their needs. This has led to a cluttered living room, multiple service fees and constant maintenance of multiple devices. They are also often difficult to install and can cost over a thousand dollars combined. Vulkano eliminates all of these issues while saving on power consumption.
Summary of Vulkano Features:
-- Transforms smartphones, iPads, iPod touches, PCs and Macs into Mobile
Video Recorders
-- Recorded programs play back on smartphones, iPads, PCs and Macs
-- Direct record mode allows for Pause, Fast Forward/Rewind
-- Schedule TV recording by show, channel or date and time
-- Browse EPG for shows and episode descriptions

Cincinnati Bell Launches Motorola Multi-Room DVR to Subscribers
Innovative solution delivers whole-home rich media experience while lowering service provider costs
HORSHAM, Pa., July 27 -- The Mobile Devices and Home business of Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) announced today that Cincinnati Bell (NYSE:CBB) is now deploying Motorola's market leading multi-room digital video recorder (MR-DVR) solution to its subscribers. The MR-DVR solution, which employs a whole-home media software application running on a combination of up to eight DVR and non-DVR DCX all-digital high definition set-top boxes, enables Cincinnati Bell subscribers to pause live TV, record and play back content, and manage their aggregate recorded library and DVR settings on any set-top in the home, even if it is not a DVR set-top.
"We recognize that winning new video subscribers is becoming more challenging as new competition emerges. Our subscribers expect us to deliver high quality content and innovative services, and this latest MR-DVR solution from Motorola allows us to do that," explained Darrick Zucco, vice president and general manager of Cincinnati Bell's wireline services. "Consumers love the flexibility DVRs provide, and we are excited about working with Motorola to take that DVR experience throughout the home. Motorola's solution gives us a cost-effective way to quickly extend our brand while offering service packages that appeal to broader audiences, which helps grow our business."
Motorola's MR-DVR solution operates over the existing home coax wiring using Multimedia over Coax Alliance (MoCA ®) technology, creating an IP network throughout the home that enables seamless and intuitive time-shifting and place-shifting of video content. The subscriber experience is enhanced with powerful bookmarking capabilities, such as unique bookmarks for each room in the house as well as the ability to retrieve bookmarks set in other rooms. Also, parents can rest assured that their children will only have access to designated content because existing set-top parental controls are automatically adopted by the MR-DVR software application.
"As evidenced in Motorola's recent Media Engagement Barometer research, consumer demand for access to video content anytime, anywhere is increasing tremendously. As a result, service providers such as Cincinnati Bell must find new ways to deliver advanced video services that keep them competitive while meeting consumers' expectations," said Larry Robinson, vice president and general manager, Motorola Mobile Devices and Home. "Motorola's MR-DVR solution offers a compelling and differentiated subscriber experience that will help drive revenue growth on the top line while reducing equipment costs that will help improve profit on the bottom line."
The television industry is moving into the "Internet Era of TV", and Motorola's rich history of innovation and demonstrated leadership is ideal for helping service providers make the transition. Motorola is focused on delivering solutions that create compelling media experiences, connect people to content that matters, and generate revenue growth for service providers. With Sunrise Date Approaching, Healthcare Providers Leverage GHX Services for Global Location Numbers in Supply Chain Transactions
Expanded use of industry standards in the healthcare supply chain expected to improve efficiencies, leading to better quality patient care and improved financial performance
LOUISVILLE, Colo., July 27 -- Responding to requests from hospitals and other healthcare providers, GHX is now offering services to help them use GS1's Global Location Numbers (GLNs) in supply chain transactions with trading partners through the GHX exchange in time to comply with the Dec. 31, 2010, sunrise date set by major group purchasing organizations (GPOs) and a number of healthcare systems. Suppliers are being called on to use GLNs, as opposed to proprietary account numbers, in business agreements and transactions by the sunrise date. In order for suppliers to meet this request, healthcare providers must first assign GLNs to locations that are currently identified with supplier-provided account numbers.
Since its founding 10 years ago, GHX has helped facilitate the expansion of industry standards to enable greater visibility and collaboration in the healthcare supply chain and, in turn, build trust among stakeholders, improve efficiencies and lead to better quality patient care and improved financial performance.
The new GLN trading services for providers incorporate best practices developed from the results of numerous pilots conducted by GHX and participating hospitals and suppliers. The GLN enablement pilots were conducted to test the ability and steps required to support the use of standards in transactions.
GLNs are globally unique identification numbers for legal entities, functional entities and physical locations. Increasingly, the healthcare industry is recognizing that use of the 13-digit numbers has the potential to improve accuracy and efficiencies in the healthcare supply chain, especially as it relates to determining contract eligibility.
Healthcare providers can choose from among the following services from GHX to help accelerate their use of GLNs and compliance with the pending sunrise dates for implementation:
-- Registration of GLNs in the GHX exchange and communication of
necessary information to trading partners, helping ensure they can
receive transactions with GLNs
-- Reconciliation of account numbers to GLNs with trading partners for
shipping and billing consistency
-- Trading Services that provide necessary cross-referencing, enabling
transactions between trading partner pairs that have disparate
technologies and/or protocols that otherwise restrict the use of GLNs
"Because GHX handles transactions for such a large percentage of the market, we believe we are best positioned to help facilitate the desire of both buyers and sellers to broadly and quickly implement industry standards, as opposed to having to approach the process with each of their individual trading partners on their own," said Ed McCauley, vice president, E-Sourcing and Business Intelligence, GHX. "As a result of the pilots, we recognize the complexity and challenges that healthcare organizations face migrating to GLNs and have learned how to make the process as efficient as possible."
GHX has published a new education paper to help providers successfully transact with GLNs on the GHX exchange and provide clarification regarding what GHX will handle for providers that choose to take advantage of the new service offering. It's available on the GHX website at: http://www.ghx.com/DesktopModules/Bring2mind/DMX/Download.aspx?TabIdq6&DMXMo dule"14&Command=Core_Download&EntryId6. For information about the service offering, e-mail gln@ghx.com.
Recently, GHX also announced a new service for suppliers that appends provider GLNs to a manufacturer's customer master data, enabling manufacturers to propagate this standard for organization identification throughout their internal systems. In this way, as providers begin to enumerate with GLNs, suppliers can be better prepared to comply with the sunrise dates.

XBRL US Releases New Version of XBRL Consistency Suite - Now Covers Detailed Footnotes, FASB's 2011 Taxonomy Pre-Release
Automated Checking Tool has 60% more checks and improved functionality
WASHINGTON, July 27 -- XBRL US, the non-profit consortium for XML business reporting, has released a second version of its XBRL Consistency Suite with improved functionality and additional checks that now cover detailed footnote tagging. The new version also now provides a quick and easy way to compare the 2009 Taxonomy Release to the 2011 Pre-release of the US GAAP Financial Reporting Taxonomy, recently published by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB).
The XBRL Consistency Suite has three primary functions: 1) it runs automated checks that help public company preparers test their XBRL documents for problems that may occur related to the use of the US GAAP Taxonomy, such as missing concepts, incorrect signs and concepts used incorrectly, 2) it enables quick and easy peer analysis to help companies identify extensions created and concepts used by other companies within their industry, and 3) allows preparers to compare one taxonomy release to another to streamline the XBRL preparation process.
"The XBRL Consistency Suite helps us ensure that our XBRL files meet the qualifications set by XBRL U.S.," said David Froid, Sr. Financial Reporting Accountant at Linn Energy. "When working with the Company Filing Analysis section of the XBRL Consistency Suite, the ability to export data to Excel provides tremendous efficiencies for performing peer reviews, especially with the amount of data that will be involved in the detail tagging of footnotes."
The new release builds on the initial offering with:
-- 60% more checks that now cover detailed footnote tags in addition to
the face financials so that companies can establish automated,
comprehensive control steps in their process
-- Detailed information on extensions created by peer companies including
name, presentation label, definition, and even presentation and
calculation hierarchies that preparers can leverage in their own
creation process
-- Ability to compare disclosure notes between multiple companies
-- Advanced filter for more complex searching on data in XBRL submissions
The tool also allows public companies to compare the 2009 Release to the 2011 FASB Pre-Release.
"We want public companies to review the concepts in the taxonomy pre-release, submit comments at the FASB website, and familiarize themselves with what they will need to use in 2011. Getting the pre-release into the XBRL Consistency Suite is a good way to get preparers to review it and compare it to the 2009 release," said Louis Matherne, Chief of Taxonomy Development, FASB. "The FAF/FASB uses the XBRL Consistency Suite in our taxonomy maintenance process to help identify best practice and research extensions and concepts used."
The XBRL Consistency Suite is the first tool of its kind and is designed to provide the kind of comprehensive checking that cannot be performed through manual review. It does not include SEC or XBRL validation which are typically included in XBRL creation tools and services. The checks were developed by the same team that developed the US GAAP Taxonomy based on their experience in developing the taxonomy and in conducting a thorough and ongoing review of XBRL submissions received into the SEC's EDGAR database. For more information about the XBRL Consistency Suite, go to http://xbrl.us/csuite.
Public company preparers can learn more about how they can avoid common errors in XBRL preparation by attending a free webinar, Wednesday, July 28 at 3pm ET by registering at http://xbrl.us/avoiderrors. Speakers will cover their experiences in XBRL preparation including Matthew Slavin, Associate Director, Professional Practice - Auditing at Ernst & Young and Rachel Gracewski, Financial Reporting Senior Analyst at United Technologies Corporation.

AT&T to Increase Undersea Cable Capacity With Major Upgrade of Asia Pacific Cable Network 2
HONG KONG, July 27 -- AT&T* today announced the planned expansion of its network capacity for the Asia Pacific region through the upgrade of the APCN2, of which AT&T is part of the ownership group. The fourfold rise in capacity in the state-of-the-art dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) cable will increase the original design capacity from the existing 10Gb/s DWDM to 40Gb/s expansion. This represents one of the world's large-scale upgrade of a major undersea cable network.
The existing APCN2 is an undersea telecommunications network of cables that spans 19,000 km and connects ten landing points across Asia Pacific, including in China, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Taiwan. The upgrade is scheduled to be completed by the second quarter of 2011.
APCN2 is a key component of AT&T's global backbone and along with several other subsea cables in the Asia Pacific region. It provides high-speed bandwidth and helps enable the diversity needed to support meshing capabilities provided by the AT&T global network. The APCN2 is designed to provide connectivity with other major trans-oceanic cable networks linking the USA, Europe, Australia and other parts of Asia.
"We are excited at the opportunity to meet our customers' growing needs for more capacity as transmission demands continue to increase in the Asia Pacific region," said Joe Watson, executive director, network engineering, AT&T Asia Pacific. "As traffic continues to grow by large measures in the region, our participation in major undersea cable networks like the APCN2 allows us to continue providing industry-leading solutions for our multinational customers around the world."
AT&T owns or leases capacity on more than 85 submarine cable systems, spanning more than 433,904 fiber-route miles around the globe, including several submarine cable routes that it uses to carry traffic between the Asia Pacific region and North America. In 2010, AT&T plans to invest US$1 billion as part of its overall 2010 global network investment to scale its delivery of applications, mobility and cloud services for global companies, to expand small business services within the United States and to continue extending its network globally. The 2010 investment program for businesses is part of AT&T's overall existing capital plan.
