Meraki Enhances Network Insight Technology with Apple iPad Fingerprinting
SAN FRANCISCO, June 2 -- Meraki, the cloud-based wireless networking company, today announced that its Network Insight technology now fingerprints Apple iPads, aiding wireless network administrators in analyzing and supporting their networks.
Network Insight is a technology unique to Meraki's Enterprise Wireless LAN, wherein Meraki's access points perform application-level inspection on wireless traffic, capturing forensics information used by network administrators to analyze network activity and troubleshoot client issues. The technology identifies network events (DNS, ARP, HTTP, etc), and client information such as the NetBios name, MAC address, operating system, and device make and model. This deep packet inspection operates at line-rate, with no drop in performance.
Once captured, this data is uploaded to the Enterprise Cloud Controller, Meraki's hosted network intelligence platform, allowing a network administrator to access the entire network's data from Meraki's browser-based Dashboard management tool.
With the enhancements announced today, Network Insight distinguishes Apple iPads from other devices running the iPhone OS, namely iPhones and iPod Touches.

The average iPad user transferred more than 300MB over the week, compared to an average of 31MB for iPhone users and 12MB for iPod Touch users. Overall, 40 iPads transferred 13.3GB, out of a total of 4192 devices that had transferred nearly 1TB of wireless data.

Berkeley Varitronics Systems Releases Stealthy Cell Phone Detector
Wolfhound-Lite's small form factor offers hands free detection while providing alternative to cell phone jamming
METUCHEN, N.J., June 2 -- Berkeley Varitronics Systems, Inc. (BVS), a leading provider of advanced wireless solutions and products to the domestic and international wireless telecommunications industry, today announced the release of an palm-sized cell phone detector called the Wolfhound-Lite. Wolfhound-Lite is the second in a line of BVS' advanced cell phone detection products and can be concealed in any pocket or worn on a belt clip like a wireless pager.
When Wolfhound-Lite vibrates, security and correctional professionals are alerted to nearby cell phone activity. The device runs on standard Lithium Ion rechargeable 9-volt batteries for up to 8 hours enabling security personnel to continuously scan for all cellular voice, text or data transmissions while keeping their eyes and hands free.
According to the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), the use of contraband cell phones by inmates has risen as the U.S. prison population continues to expand. The number of cell phones confiscated by prison officials has dramatically increased in only a few years. For example, during 2006 California correctional officers seized approximately 261 cell phones in the State's prisons and camps; by 2008, that number increased ten fold to 2,811. Maryland and other States have also seen a rise in the number of confiscated cell phones in their State prisons. In 2009, Maryland prison officials confiscated nearly 1,700 phones, up from approximately 1,200 phones the year before.
In order to address this growing problem, the Wolfhound-Lite is designed to detect and locate contraband cell phones without using jamming technology that can interfere with authorized communication channels or 911 emergency calls. In fact, jamming is a violation of FCC rules and the CTIA, a leading wireless industry association, is on record as opposing jamming. Other solutions may require an entire network infrastructure of wireless sensors hard-wired throughout a facility that can be expensive and difficult to deploy.
Wolfhound-Lite contains a high speed scanning multi-band receiver in a pocket-sized pager configuration. Its integrated omni-directional antenna system allows correctional personnel to 'sniff out' a cell phone's unique RF energy algorithm and lock on to it. The unit's bright but discreet OLED display indicates signal strength. Wolfhound-Lite also provides a stealth mode that alerts only the operator with vibration as soon as any cell phone is detected.
Most correctional facilities and prisons utilize a significant amount of steel and are not RF friendly resulting in poor cell phone coverage. This requires cell phones to transmit at higher power levels in order to maintain connection with nearby base stations. SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 2 -- Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Inc. (FMA) today introduced the industry's first transceiver that supports 3GPP LTE/WCDMA/EGPRS wireless phones.
The Fujitsu MB86L10A transceiver eliminates 3G and LTE TX and RX interstage SAW filters and low-noise amplifiers (LNAs). The single-chip transceiver features backward compatibility with a high-level programming model (API) for radio control using DigRF/MIPI D3G and D4G open standard digital interfaces. This makes the new MB86L10A compatible with a wide range of industry basebands.
The compact module enables cell phone manufacturers to reduce component count, board space and total bill of materials. Its simplified programming model significantly reduces development time and simplifies integration of the RF in a radio platform. The MB86L10A includes eight outputs that directly drive the power amplifier, eliminating the need for TX SAW filters while simultaneously supporting advanced multimode PAs. The receiver provides nine inputs that support LTE, WCDMA and GSM/EDGE. The new RF front-end eliminates the need for LNAs and SAW filters. Five additional ports enable RX diversity in WCDMA and LTE modes. The receiver also incorporates anti-aliasing filters, digital channel filters, digital gain control and high-dynamic-range ADCs.
The MB86L10A supports GSM (GSM850, EGSM900, DCS1800, PCS1900), WCDMA (Bands I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VIII, IX, X and XI) and LTE (FDD Bands 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 17 and TDD band 38 or 40). The transceiver includes dual 3G and 4G DigRF interfaces to the baseband IC to support the latest as well as legacy generations of basebands, SPI and/or GPOs control PAs, switching regulators and antenna switches. A microcontroller in the transceiver simplifies timing and control.

MB86L10A Now in Pre-Production Field Trials
The new MB86L10A adds to the company's leadership in the mobile phone RF transceiver market, following the September 2009 introduction of the first commercial multimode 2G/3G SAW-less transceiver, the MB86L01A. (See related press release, http://www.fujitsu.com/us/news/pr/fma_20090914.html.)
The MB86L10A transceiver is in pre-production phase and is supporting field trials at a major carrier. The field trial is exercising the new device in 2G, 3G and 4G modes across multiple bands and both DigRF interfaces.

AT&T Announces New Lower-Priced Wireless Data Plans To Make Mobile Internet More Affordable To More People
DALLAS, June 2 -- AT&T*, the U.S. smartphone leader, today introduced new wireless data plans that make it more affordable for more people to enjoy the benefits of the mobile Internet. Customers can pick the new data plan that best meets their needs - either a $15 per month entry plan or a $25 per month plan with 10 times more data. Current smartphone customers are not required to switch to the new plans, but can choose to do so without a contract extension.
"AT&T helps mobilize everything on the Internet - your favorite web sites, TV shows, music, games and social networks. Virtually everything previously done while sitting at a computer can now be done on the go," said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets. "To give more people the opportunity to experience these benefits, we're breaking free from the traditional 'one-size-fits-all' pricing model and making the mobile Internet more affordable to a greater number of people."
Each plan includes unlimited access at no additional charge to more than 20,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots in the U.S. Customers can also use unlimited Wi-Fi at home, in the office or elsewhere if available. AT&T will also help customers manage their wireless data usage by sending free text messages after customers reach different usage intervals and by providing online tools, including a smartphone app that shows monthly usage information.
The new wireless data plans - including a new tethering option - will be available beginning June 7. Current AT&T voice and texting plans are unchanged.
More Choice
The new AT&T plans provide large amounts of data to enable people to enjoy their favorite online activities:
-- DataPlus. Provides 200 megabytes (MB) of data - for example, enough to
send/receive 1,000 emails (no attachments), plus send/receive 150
emails with attachments, plus view 400 Web pages, plus post 50 photos
on social media sites, plus watch 20 minutes of streaming video - for
just $15 per month.** This plan, which can save customers up to 50
percent off their wireless data charges, is designed for people who
primarily like to surf the web, send email and use social networking
apps. If customers exceed 200 MB in a monthly billing cycle, they will
receive an additional 200 MB of data usage for $15 for use in the
cycle. Currently, 65 percent of AT&T smartphone customers use less
than 200 MB of data per month on average.
-- DataPro. Provides 2 gigabytes (GB) of data - for example, enough to
send/receive 10,000 emails (no attachments), plus send/receive 1,500
emails with attachments, plus view 4,000 Web pages, plus post 500
photos to social media sites, plus watch 200 minutes of streaming
video - for $25 per month.** Should a customer exceed 2 GB during a
billing cycle, they will receive an additional 1 GB of data for $10
for use in the cycle. Currently, 98 percent of AT&T smartphone
customers use less than 2 GB of data a month on average.
-- Tethering. Smartphone customers - including iPhone customers - who
choose the DataPro plan have the option to add tethering for an
additional $20 per month. Tethering lets customers use their
tethering-enabled smartphones as a modem to provide a broadband
connection for laptop computers, netbooks or other computing devices.
Tethering for iPhones will be available when Apple releases iPhone OS
4 this summer.
With the new wireless data plans, pricing for a smartphone voice and data bundle now starts at just $54.99 per month for an individual plan, or $24.99 per month for an additional line on a FamilyTalk plan, $15 per month less than the price of the previous entry level bundle.
For new iPad customers, the $25 per month 2 GB plan will replace the existing $29.99 unlimited plan. iPad customers will continue to pre-pay for their wireless data plan and no contract is required. Existing iPad customers who have the $29.99 per month unlimited plan can keep that plan or switch to the new $25 per month plan with 2 GB of data.
Wi-Fi at 20,000 AT&T Hot Spots
The vast majority of smartphones that AT&T offers have built-in Wi-Fi, which lets the devices automatically switch from the wireless network to a Wi-Fi hotspot without prompting, making Wi-Fi even more convenient and easy to use. This enables customers to use Wi-Fi in the home, office and at public locations where available. Wi-Fi will generally provide consistently fast speeds and does not count against a customer's monthly data plan usage total. In addition, virtually all AT&T smartphone customers have access at no additional charge to more than 20,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots in the U.S. Customers can get more information on how to use Wi-Fi and find the location of AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots at http://www.att.com/wifiaccess.
Monitoring and Managing Usage
To help customers easily check their data usage, AT&T has made the information readily available in a number of ways***:
-- Customer Text Notifications On Data Usage. When customers begin to
approach their monthly usage limit, AT&T will send three text
notifications - after they reach 65 percent, 90 percent and 100
percent of the threshold. Customers will also be sent emails if AT&T
has their email address.
-- Data Usage Monitoring. Additionally, customers with iPhones and other
select devices can use the free AT&T myWireless application to check
data usage. The application is available for download in several
smartphone app stores. Also, AT&T customers can call *DATA# from their
wireless phone to check their data usage for the current billing
period. They receive a free text message with their usage information.
Customers can also go online to http://www.att.com/wireless to see all of
their usage information, past and present.
-- Data Calculator. The easy-to-use online data calculator enables
customers to estimate their mobile data usage and get a better sense

Iridium Announces Comprehensive Plan for Next Generation Constellation
- Iridium Selects Thales Alenia Space to Design and Construct Satellites for Iridium NEXT - French Export Credit Agency Commits to Guarantee Substantially All of $1.8 Billion Credit Facility
MCLEAN, Va., June 2 -- Iridium Communications Inc. (NASDAQ:IRDM) today announced its comprehensive plan for funding, building and deploying its next-generation satellite constellation, Iridium NEXT. Specifically, the Company announced the execution of a fixed price contract with Thales Alenia Space, a joint company between Thales (67%) and Finmeccanica (33%), for the design and construction of satellites for the Iridium NEXT constellation. In addition, the company announced that Coface, the French export credit agency, has issued, for the account of the French State, a "Promise of Guarantee" which commits to cover 95% of the $1.8 billion credit facility for the project. The financing to be covered by the Coface guarantee is being syndicated through French and other major international banks and financial institutions and is expected to be completed this summer. The Coface guarantee commitment is not conditioned on Iridium raising any further debt or equity financing. Goldman, Sachs & Co., Societe Generale, and Hawkpoint Partners Limited continue to advise the Company in connection with the financing.
Iridium's fixed price contract with Thales Alenia Space provides for the construction of the originally planned 72 operational satellites and in-orbit spares, plus an additional nine ground spares, which provide greater risk mitigation with respect to the new constellation. As a result of the expanded scope of the project, the total cost of Iridium NEXT, including all costs associated with development, manufacture and launch of the constellation, is now anticipated to be approximately $2.9 billion. In addition, Iridium has entered into an Authorization to Proceed (ATP), which allows Thales Alenia Space to commence work immediately on the development of satellites prior to completion of the financing, with the plan to commence the launch of the first satellites during the first quarter of 2015.
