STMicroelectronics Announces Volume Production of STM8L Ultra-Low-Power Microcontrollers Enabling Smarter Energy-Saving Designs
Three new 8-bit product lines combine next-generation architecture with ST's EnergyLite(TM) technology platform to do more work with less energy
GENEVA, May 24 -- STMicroelectronics (NYSE:STM), a world leader in microcontrollers, has announced full production of the STM8L ultra low-power microcontroller family. Unveiled in late 2009, the new family features EnergyLite(TM) technology to minimize power consumption in all operating modes.
Ultra-low-power microcontrollers meet the fast growing demand for energy efficiency, helping designers to extend the lifetime of battery-operated products and to reduce energy consumption in applications such as smart meters and domestic appliances. Common power-saving techniques include sleep modes and shutting off unused parts of the chip, but ST's EnergyLite technology also saves power when the device is active. This helps designers meet energy efficiency targets such as ENERGY STAR 80 Plus, the international program that promotes more energy-efficient power supplies, as well as standby-power limits such as the IEA's 1-Watt Plan.
The STM8L EnergyLite microcontrollers now available comprise three product lines featuring ST's advanced 8-bit processor core, which has an advanced architecture delivering high performance and efficiency. The STM8L101 line defines the entry point for the STM8L family, providing up to 8Kbyte of integrated non-volatile Flash memory and offering a choice of 20-pin, 28-pin and 32-pin low-cost, low-footprint packages.
The STM8L151 and STM8L152 lines add extra features including up to 32Kbytes Flash density and up to 2Kbytes SRAM, external crystal/clock capability, enhanced reset features, and support for Direct Memory Access (DMA). Available peripherals include a motor-control timer, analog functions, real-time clock, and high-speed ADC and DAC modules. In addition, on-chip EEPROM with true Read While Write (RWW) capability saves complex and expensive emulation in Flash. The STM8L152 adds to these features by also integrating an LCD controller.
Family pricing starts with the STM8L101 4-Kbyte Flash version in QFN20 3x3mm low-profile packages at $0.61 in quantities of 10,000. Further pricing options are available for larger quantities.

ST's ultra-low-power EnergyLite technology is based on a dedicated, proprietary 130nm process, which is optimized for ultra-low leakage current. This significantly improves efficiency throughout static and dynamic modes, providing a low-power foundation for other energy-saving innovations. In addition, low-power embedded non-volatile (Flash) memory also helps reduce the energy consumed whenever the microcontroller is powered up. The Flash memory can also be turned off independently, to achieve a further significant reduction in microcontroller power consumption
An on-chip regulator ensures that power consumption is independent of the supply voltage, which allows designers to optimize the system power architecture without increasing the microcontroller's consumption. At the same time, EnergyLite technology permits the CPU to operate up to its maximum frequency throughout the entire supply voltage range from 1.65V to 3.6V. Integrated analog peripherals, also, are fully functional down to 1.8V, which can save the additional cost and power overhead to provide a separate analog supply.
Like other ultra low-power devices, EnergyLite microcontrollers also make full use of clock gating to prevent unused peripherals consuming power. There are also multiple power-management modes including a 5.1 microamp Low-Power Run mode, 3.0-microamp Low-Power Wait mode, 1.2-microamp Active Halt with full Real-Time Clock (0.9 microamp with Automatic Wake-Up (AWU) and 350-nanoamp Halt mode. The device can wake from Halt within 4 microseconds, enabling frequent use of the lowest-power mode. Low-power peripherals including the sub 1-microamp Real-Time Clock and Automatic Wake-Up (AWU) unlock further savings.
The combined effect of the EnergyLite innovations, covering chip fabrication, voltage/frequency regulation, and power management, allow the STM8L family to achieve dynamic current consumption as low as 150 microamps per MHz.

The new Elo TouchSystems IDS family features three sizes of zero-bezel Digital Signage-rated displays (vs. panels designed for home environments) measuring 32- to 46-inches. The portfolio incorporates advanced panel technologies including Samsung Electronics' LCD Digital Information Display (DID) technology to provide a scratch resilient, aluminum frame encased solution able to withstand constant interactivity in high-traffic, public-access venues. Magnum 6KM Withstands Shock and Vibration to Provide Ethernet Network Connectivity under Rough Mobile Conditions
FREMONT, Calif., May 24 -- The newest member of the industrial-grade Magnum(TM) Switches product line, the Magnum 6KM Mobile Ethernet Switch from GarrettCom®, Inc., is purpose-built to withstand shock and vibration in harsh mobile environments including railroad carriages, public service and emergency vehicles, mining equipment, shipboard, and military vehicles. New agent-less design gathers data without the need to install software on desktops
ALPHARETTA, Ga., May 24 -- Liquidware Labs, the leader in Assessment, Migration, and User Experience Management for next generation desktops, today announced the availability of Liquidware Labs Stratusphere v4.6 with a new agent-less desktop monitoring design, a user experience calibration feature, and a one-click proof-of-concept (POC) validation report for planning and implementing next generation desktops such as Citrix XenDesktop and VMware View.
Stratusphere provides organizations moving to VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure) decision support data to develop a clear path forward. Stratusphere Fit is first used to perform a full assessment on an organization's desktop infrastructure. The solution gathers usage data and metrics at all integral levels - from the desktop, to the network, to the datacenter, to the SAN. Stratusphere UX (User Experience) then goes to work immediately after a migration by using similar metrics to ensure that an optimum desktop experience is being delivered to users. The solution has built-in alert mechanisms to inform appropriate teams when performance of any integral part of the infrastructure falls below a specified threshold.
Stratusphere v4.6 now gathers metrics from desktops with a unique agent-less approach through a centralized network loadable module. This feature makes assessments non-obtrusive and easier than ever to perform. To get started with an assessment, the administrator simply applies the Stratusphere module to selected user(s) through a straight-forward Microsoft Group Policy Setting. Stratusphere then runs silently on the chosen desktops, quietly gathering usage data and performance metrics for later reporting and trending analysis. The solution is automatically accessed over the network without the need to install software on any client PC or virtual desktop. The Stratusphere module can be set to dissolve after a specific date or can easily be turned off by deleting the Group Policy setting. A standalone agent remains available to support laptop and mobile users.
A new user experience baseline feature named Stratusphere UX Calibration(TM) has also been added in v4.6. Once Stratusphere UX gathers initial usage and infrastructure metrics, the solution reports the status of the user experience as good, fair, or poor based on Stratusphere's analysis of pre-populated thresholds. The administrator can then customize these thresholds if desired and can then use the calibration feature to set metrics of a known good user experience with a single click. If the user experience falls below the calibrated values, proper support teams can be automatically notified before negative trends impact users.
Validations for Citrix XenDesktop/VMware View Proof of Concept Projects
Many organizations are exploring test cases of VDI and have implemented POCs in an attempt to confirm a selected desktop's effectiveness for performance and user efficiency. Stratusphere v4.6 now includes a one-click proof of concept validation report to provide clear answers for these POCs. To use this feature, an integrator or customer would simply run Stratusphere Fit before installing the new Citrix XenDesktop, VMware View, or Windows and then run Stratusphere UX after the installation. After a short validation monitoring period to ensure accurate results, the administrator can use the simple one-click feature to generate an in-depth before-and-after report of performance increase or decrease at all integral levels - from the desktop, to the network, to application servers, to the SAN.

AUSTIN, Texas, May 24, 2010 -- National Instruments (NASDAQ:NATI) today introduced its new solution for IEEE 802.11n wireless LAN (WLAN) testing, the NI WLAN Measurement Suite 2.0, which includes enhanced software toolkits for IEEE 802.11n WLAN signal generation and analysis. The suite integrates with NI 6.6 GHz PXI Express multichannel RF signal generators and analyzers to deliver true, phase-coherent multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) RF measurements required for IEEE 802.11n WLAN testing. The suite also delivers the industry's fastest measurement speed for those including error vector magnitude (EVM) and spectrum mask and provides the highest class of measurement accuracy for IEEE 802.11n and a/b/g WLAN test.
Using a software-defined architecture based on PXI and NI LabVIEW graphical system development software, engineers can significantly lower their cost of test and reduce the size of their test systems by testing multiple wireless standards, such as IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n, GPS, Bluetooth, GSM/EDGE, WCDMA, WiMAX and others, using the same PXI test system.
The WLAN Measurement Suite 2.0 adds IEEE 802.11n support to the generation and analysis toolkits to facilitate MIMO testing with true port-to-port phase coherency. For measurements, the toolkit integrates with NI PXIe-5663E 6.6 GHz two-, three- and four-channel vector signal analyzers (VSAs) to provide engineers highly accurate multistream MIMO measurements. For signal generation, the toolkit integrates with NI-PXIe-5673E 6.6 GHz two-, three- and four-channel vector signal generators (VSGs) to generate true phase-coherent, multistream RF signals.
In addition to 802.11n MIMO support, the latest version of the NI WLAN Measurement Suite improves on the previous version with faster measurement time. When combined with the latest NI PXIe-8133 quad-core embedded controller, the system can perform composite EVM and power measurements in 7.0 ms, the fastest in the industry. A result of the toolkit's multicore-enabled measurement algorithms, the fast measurement speed is crucial for reducing test times and lowering the costs of testing wireless devices.
The new NI WLAN Measurement Suite also adds a variety of software features to improve measurement performance and ease of use. Engineers can software-enable its new resolution bandwidth filter feature to remove broadband noise and increase EVM measurement accuracy. With front-end filtering engaged, engineers can achieve residual EVM accuracy of better than -47 dB when testing WLAN devices.
The measurement suite includes soft front panels for signal generation and analysis to support a wide range of WLAN IEEE 802.11n configurations, including 4x4 MIMO, and to report measurement results and traces. Microsoft Delivers on Interoperability Principles With Office Outlook
New open source technologies facilitate interoperability with popular Outlook data files.
REDMOND, Wash., May 24 -- Microsoft Corp. today announced the availability of two new open source projects that complement technical documentation recently released for Microsoft Outlook Personal Folders (.pst). Combined, the documentation and tools advance interoperability with data stored in .pst files, reflecting customer requests for greater access to data stored and shared in digital formats generated by Microsoft Outlook and for enhanced data portability.
Developers can use these resources to more easily build solutions, including competitive products, that run on top of the .pst file format, unlocking data stored in .pst files in simple scenarios, such as extracting photos stored in .pst files to create an album, as well as more complex scenarios, including archive search, e-discovery and corporate compliance, and uploading data to the cloud.
The technical documentation, released in line with the company's Interoperability Principles, makes it easier for developers to read and write data out of .pst files on any platform, regardless of whether Microsoft Outlook is installed. Developers previously could access the data stored in .pst file format using Messaging Application Programming Interface and the Outlook Object Model -- a rich set of connections to data stored by Outlook and Exchange Server, available when Outlook is installed on the desktop.
Now, two new open source projects, a .pst Data Structure View Tool and a .pst File Format Software Development Kit (SDK), further reduce the complexity of reading and extracting data stored in .pst files for use in new applications across a range of platforms. The .pst Data Structure View Tool is a graphical browser of internal data structures for .pst files that enables a developer to better understand .pst file content. The .pst File Format SDK is a cross-platform library that allows developers to read data stored in .pst files and develop applications accessing the data. In the near future, the capability to write data to .pst files will be added to the SDK.
"Our customers have expressed a strong interest in search solutions that offer access to .pst archives. The formal .pst specification documentation that Microsoft released is of the highest quality and makes building solutions that leverage the .pst format practical," said Dave Vest, director, MythicSoft Ltd. "This documentation allowed us to rapidly integrate .pst archive searching into our flagship product within two weeks."
Data portability is increasingly important for customers operating complex, heterogeneous technology environments. Research commissioned with IDC reflects that in 2009, the amount of digital information created and replicated grew by 62 percent.(1)

The AN/PRC-117G's wideband network access capabilities give warfighters and field commanders critical real-time information through a man-portable radio that is significantly smaller, lighter and more capable than legacy units. The radio offers an extended frequency range of 30 MHz to 2 GHz.
AN/PRC-117G Mission Modules provide a flexible platform for expansion as mission requirements evolve. The modules utilize a standardized and interchangeable architecture, enabling the warfighter to take only the capabilities they need into the field. Users of AN/PRC-117G radios already fielded will also be able to upgrade to incorporate the new modules.
