Exar's New LPC UARTs Reduce Footprint in Industrial PCs

The XR28V38x Replaces Super I/O Devices for 8X Reduction in Board Space

FREMONT, Calif., Jan. 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Exar Corporation (NYSE: EXAR), a leading supplier of high performance analog mixed-signal components and data management solutions, today announced the XR28V382 and XR28V384 UARTs for the Intel Low Pin Count (LPC) motherboard bus. The new LPC UARTs reduce footprint while increasing data integrity and throughput by providing industry leading 128 byte FIFOs.  These devices are targeted towards industrial PCs, factory automation, process controllers, network routers, and single board embedded computers.

The XR28V382 is packaged in a small 5x5mm 32 pin QFN and includes two UART channels, while the XR28V384 has four UART channels in a 7x7mm 48 pin TQFP.  Exar's dual and quad LPC UARTs, compared to 128 pin super I/O devices, offer the same or more serial channels in a significantly smaller footprint, offering as much as 8X reduction in board space.

"They are also an excellent alternative to USB UARTs; they interface directly with the system BIOS so there is no need to install a driver, and they are inherently compatible with multiple operating systems because the device is configured before the OS loads."

Product Details
Both the two channel XR28V382 and four channel XR28V384 UARTs include Exar's automatic half duplex control for RS-485 networks.  These parts feature 128 byte transmit and receive FIFOs, are rated for the industrial temp range, and operate at 3.3V.  Each UART channel supports serial data rates up to 3Mbps.

Suggested retail prices for XR28V382 and XR28V384 are $2.40 and $3.50 respectively, in 1,000-unit quantities.

Engineers at beta user Trek Bicycle in Waterloo, Wisconsin are using the Objet500 Connex3 Color Multi-material 3D Printer for assessment and testing of accessories like bike chain stay guards and handlebar grips prior to actual production. "The Objet500 Connex3 Color Multi-material 3D Printer changed the way we manufacture at Trek, augmenting our traditional, time-consuming CNC processes with fast, iterative and realistic prototyping and functional testing," says Mike Zeigle, manager of Trek's prototype development group.

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- CrowdOptic, a maker of crowd-powered mobile and wearable applications as seen at popular sporting events, today announced it has received funding to ramp up sales and marketing of its software, which curates and broadcasts live streaming video from Google Glass and other smart devices to stadium scoreboards, fan mobile devices and live TV.

(NASDAQ: VOXX), today announced that its Invision Automotive Dealership Direct Sales group will be debuting their 2014 line at the NADA Convention on January 25(th) through January 27th, in New Orleans, LA.  This marks the return of the Company to NADA after a four-year hiatus.  In addition to introducing HDMI/MHL connectivity to allow consumers direct connection to smartphones, tablets and even Smart TV's, Invision will also be showcasing CarLink, a full telematics solution for car dealerships and EVlink vehicle charging stations for automotive dealerships currently selling electric vehicles.

The new 2014 models have the ability to connect the digital output of a mobile device (Smartphone/Tablet) to the HDMI/MHL inputs on the Invision headrest and overhead monitors, allowing consumers to access apps on their mobile devices and show them on their headrest or overhead screens.  The content can include everything from movies stored on (or streamed into) their mobile device (Wi-Fi access is needed to stream or access internet/cloud based apps), to games, and even social media apps such as YouTube.  In some cases, the mobile device can be used as the remote control for the headrest or overhead system to play games.

Debuting for the first time at the NADA Show, Invision will now be offering the 30AMP EVlink charging station developed by Schneider Electric.  This charging station allows electric vehicle drivers to charge their vehicle up to 5X faster than a standard level 1 charger and provides the car dealer with a new accessory product, in a new category that not only fills a consumer need but also translates into new profits.

EVlink requires professional installation by a licensed electrician and Invision has partnered with InstallerNet, a nationwide network of trained technicians that will make all of the arrangements for installation.  The EVlink charger can be easily mounted on a stud, drywall or masonry wall in the garage.  The flexible design allows mounting of the charger and cable holder in a way that saves space and maximizes convenience.  Consumers can even customize the 'skin' on the charger cover with family photos or custom designs.  There is broad electric vehicle compatibility, so the system works with virtually any electric vehicle.

Finally, CarLink, the telematics solution that offers as much to the car dealer as it does to the consumer, has multiple convenience and safety features, including remote start and keyless entry from a mobile device; notifications as to when a vehicle is speeding, stolen, broken into, towed or crashed; and provides alerts when a vehicle enters or exits a specific zone or the device is removed.  The device's Lot Spot feature automatically remembers the vehicle's location and provides walking navigation maps to quickly locate it in a crowded parking lot or unfamiliar area.  CarLink can also be used to restrict cell phone use in a vehicle when used with Android or Blackberry compatible devices.

Equinix to Open Sixth London Data Center in Slough

Major investment in leading London data center campus includes construction of new high-performance facility and acquisition of existing sites

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. and LONDON, Jan. 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Equinix, Inc.  (Nasdaq: EQIX), the global interconnection and data center company, today announced it will build a new data center called LD6 in its highly successful London Slough campus in response to consistent demand from customers in the financial services, content, cloud and enterprise segments.

The new LD6 data center will provide total capacity of approximately 8,000 square meters (86,000 square feet; 2,770 cabinet equivalents). With $79 million of capital expenditures invested, the first phase is scheduled to open in the first half of 2015 and will provide initial capacity of 1,385 cabinets.

Additionally, Equinix has invested $37 million in the acquisition of its existing LD4 and LD5 campus buildings and concurrently entered into long-term ground leases for the entire LD4, LD5 and LD6 campus with SEGRO plc. This acquisition gives Equinix effective 50-year control of one of the UK's largest, fastest-growing and most network-dense data center campuses, supporting customer continuity and future expansion.

    --  LD6 aims to become one of a small number of Leadership in Energy &
        Environmental Design (LEED) platinum-accredited energy efficient data
        centers in the UK. Equinix plans to achieve this with the aid of an
        innovative air system which will utilize mass air cooling technology
        with indirect heat exchange and 100 percent natural ventilation. This
        will contribute to LD6 having lower energy consumption and a smaller
        carbon footprint than other facilities of its kind.
    --  Once LD6 is complete, the Equinix London Slough campus will provide over
        36,000 square meters (388,000 square feet) of net premium colocation
        space interconnected by more than 1,000 diverse dark fiber links -
        increasing scale and resilience.
    --  With over 90 network service providers and access to a range of
        transatlantic cables, the London Slough campus is one of the busiest
        network nodes in the UK, and offers latency in the region of 30
        milliseconds to New York and 4 milliseconds to Frankfurt, making it an
        ideal high-performance hub for cloud and content service provision.
    --  A key growth driver for the launch of LD6 has been a major shift of
        financial services firms from high-risk, power-challenged data centers
        in the City of London and Docklands to the Equinix London Slough data
        center campus. The campus currently houses over 170 financial services
