AT&T Hackathon Winner Africa Swing Launches on WildTangent
AT&T and WildTangent expand mobile games collaboration to provide developers with continued go-to-market opportunities
REDMOND, Wash., June 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Swinging from AT&T* hackathon success to consumers' devices, AT&T and WildTangent today celebrated the launch of Android-based mobile app Africa Swing, which won the first in a series of gaming-themed AT&T Mobile App Hackathons. As part of the first-place prize package, the AT&T Developer Program awarded team Africa Swing with WildTangent's hands-on support to bring the app to market, which is now available via WildTangent's mobile game service.
At the AT&T-hosted hackathon this past January, participants, including eventual winners Linghua Jin and Xiaomi Mao, were challenged to create a mobile gaming app in 28 hours. There, Jin and Mao developed a prototype for Africa Swing, a mobile game that challenges players to dodge obstacles while collecting points with upcoming actions signaled by the rhythm of the in-app music.
"AT&T hackathons provide a great opportunity to experience game development from concept to execution," said Jin. "AT&T and WildTangent gave us the tools and resources we needed to build a fun game, and now we have a chance to share it with consumers."
Through continued collaboration with the AT&T Developer Program, WildTangent will provide go-to-market support for winning developers participating in future gaming-themed AT&T Mobile App Hackathons.
"AT&T is committed to empowering the developer community with the right resources, expertise and environment to help them quickly create innovative apps and services," said Carolyn Billings, associate vice president, AT&T Developer Program. "Heightening the value we are able to provide to developers attending our hackathons, we work to bring the right collaborators, such as WildTangent, to the table to accelerate an app's time to market. The result is new apps like Africa Swing that enhance consumers' wireless experience."
To ensure that AT&T subscribers have the opportunity to download Africa Swing and other exciting apps available through the WildTangent mobile game service, the company is exclusively offering AT&T subscribers 25 WildCoins - WildTangent's digital currency - for registering with the free game service. The WildCoins can be used to purchase games, in-game items and game rentals. AT&T subscribers can also apply any game purchases or rentals directly to their AT&T account.
"Mobile leader AT&T is embracing our one-of-a-kind games service," said Sean Vanderdasson, senior vice president of WildTangent. "WildTangent gives customers more choices for how they discover and play games, and we look forward to bringing these choices to AT&T's subscribers as well as introducing consumers to new, cool apps that we help bring to market through AT&T hackathons."

LG Demonstrates Higher-Resolution, Higher-Brightness Digital Signage Displays at InfoComm 2013
With First 84-inch class Ultra HD Commercial Screen, IPS Display Solutions, LG Electronics Drives Change in U.S. Digital Signage Industry
ORLANDO, Fla., June 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Led by the industry's first 84-inch class (84.0 inch measured diagonally) "Ultra High-Definition" 4K digital signage display*, LG Electronics USA is raising the bar for the digital signage industry in 2013 - with a focus on higher-resolution, higher-brightness energy-efficient LED displays that allow businesses to use digital signage in new, exciting ways, while helping to transform the North American digital signage market.
At InfoComm 2013 here this week (booth# 1923), LG is demonstrating its broad line of commercial LED digital signage and display solutions, including stunning outdoor displays, versatile ultra-wide signage, expansive video walls, and high-end commercial-grade digital signage systems.
"With the needs of business owners and venue operators constantly evolving, it's imperative that technology act as a tool for effectively delivering their agenda to a vast audience in a way that differentiates the business from competitors," said Y.K. Cho, B2B senior vice president, LG Electronics USA. "LG is constantly seeking ways to not only expand its portfolio, but increase display performance. That's why this year we've focused on delivering a compelling line-up of energy efficient digital display solutions that not only move business owners' strategies to the next level, but also allow them to use digital signage in ways that were previously unachievable ."
LG's flagship digital signage monitor for 2013 is its 84-inch class (84.0 inch measured diagonally) Ultra HD Signage Display. Boasting pixel resolution of 3840 x 2160, four times higher than Full HD displays, it offers the sharpest picture available on a large-screen display.
Integrated into all LED models, including the 84-inch class Ultra HD screen, is LG's In Plane Switching (IPS) panel technology that helps ensure accurate color saturation and contrast at wide-angle viewing (both horizontal and vertical), resulting in a display with great picture quality that can be installed at virtually any angle or height. LG's unique display technology also provides a temperature tolerance of up to 230 degrees Fahrenheit (110 degrees Celsius), which helps alleviate a common problem of screens overheating, affecting picture quality.
"The digital signage landscape is evolving rapidly as technology continues to progress at a very fast rate. Many of the new display products being launched not only adapt to the current environment and infrastructure, but many are also driving innovation and changing the environment altogether," said Todd Fender, Senior Analyst at NPD DisplaySearch. "Higher resolution displays are opening up new opportunities, while transparent displays are re-inventing retail applications and larger LCD displays are starting to displace alternative technologies or eliminating the costs and redundancies of utilizing smaller displays."
Signage for All Environments
LG demonstrated the breadth of its 2013 LED digital signage family and includes the world's first Ultra HD digital signage, along withstunning outdoor displays, versatile ultra-wide signage, expansive video walls, high-end pro-grade digital signage and LG EcoSmart(TM) features.
"Our high-brightness, and Ultra HD displays reflect the tremendous growth in the industry since InfoComm last year," Said Dan Smith, Digital Signage Director, LG Electronics USA. "These are not just theoretical technologies for LG, but products that we are shipping and installing now."

Wavien, Inc. Introduces an Ultra Bright LED Fiber Optic Illuminator using RLT(TM) Technology
VALENCIA, Calif., June 12, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Wavien, Inc. introduces an ultra bright LED fiber optic illuminator using its patented Recycling Light Technology (RLT), designed for architectural and signage applications. Wavien's new system combines the improved brightness produced by RLT technology with the long lifetime of LED technology. This combination overcomes past obstacles to fiber optic signage and architectural applications, which were hampered by the short lifetime of arc lamp illuminators and insufficient brightness of LED illuminators. Wavien's new illuminator can support both 3M single core fiber or Schott multi-fiber bundles, allowing the RLT system to replace neon-based signs currently used in a wide variety of side-firing applications.
The RLT technology greatly improves brightness to LEDs with full red, green, blue and white color capability. Using a 4-color LED package allows the light output to be digitally control and produce unlimited color variations. This multi-color capability is not available in traditional neon signs and will provide a new dimension in a broad variety of signage and architectural applications.
Traditional light collection optics platforms do not increase LED brightness and as a result, are not efficient for projection. The basis of Wavien's RLT technology is a very low-cost recycling collar optical component that captures the wasted light in conventional optics designs, recycles the light and redirects it back into the output beam allowing increased efficiency, while reducing the power consumption.
"Wavien's RLT technology for LED offers outstanding energy saving by recovering unused high angle light from the LED. This recycling technique is a benefit for a wide range of applications including projectors and spot lights in addition to fiber optic lighting," stated Dr. Kenneth Li, President and CEO of Wavien, Inc., who is also the inventor of the recycling technology. Dr. Li added: "This unique design enables LED based products to be able to increase brightness by up to 280% depending on color of the LED." The diameter of the aperture on the recycling collar, which determines the amount of recycling, can be scaled to meet the user's needs and determines the beam angle. "Clearly Wavien's RLT technology is a breakthrough in the fiber optic architectural and signage lighting industry," stated Dr. Li.
This LED recycling technique is also being introduced into many other areas of illumination including medical light sources and consumer projectors. Wavien will show this technology at InfoComm 2013 in Orlando, Florida from June 12 - 14 at booth #381

"It's no longer enough to be able to simply view content, consumers expect to interact with their technology in a seamless way," said Roger Carver, Manager of DLP Front Projection. "The solution we're demonstrating this week registers up to 20 points of touch on any surface, and from a technical standpoint, there's no reason we can't move well beyond."
Between 2010 and 2012 global sales of interactive projectors more than tripled reaching over 140,000 units shipped, and according to Futuresource, demand continues to rise this year. Consistent with the market trend toward interactive displays, schools are looking for a way to replicate the traditional chalk or whiteboard shared-learning experience with technology. With multitouch interactivity, DLP is creating a platform that will allow teams of students to participate simultaneously on a screen big enough to fill an entire wall.
"DLP is also looking at ways to grow our interactive capabilities beyond traditional projection settings," added Carver. "Interactive digital signage and automotive applications are two examples of segments where we see the potential for exciting growth and innovation."
Manufacturers such as Hitachi, NEC, Panasonic and Ricoh have been adding DLP technology to their existing product lines to leverage DLP innovations.

Planetary Resources Needs YOUR Help to Hunt for Alien Planets
Asteroid mining company announces new crowdfunding goal to enhance the ARKYD telescope with capability to search for alien planets around distant stars
BELLEVUE, Wash., June 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Alien planets are out there and Planetary Resources needs your help to find them! That's right, the same high-powered telescope technology being used by Planetary Resources to identify near-Earth asteroids can also be used to hunt for what scientists call extrasolar planets or "exoplanets" - which are very much alien worlds. For the first-time ever, this capability will be placed directly into the hands of students, researchers and citizen scientists.
Planetary Resources recently launched a campaign on Kickstarter for the ARKYD - the world's first crowdfunded space telescope accessible to the public. In only 13 days, the company has already reached well over 85 percent of its original US$1 million goal. Today, the company is announcing that if the total amount pledged exceeds US$2 million in the 19 days remaining in the campaign,it will invest the additional funds to enhance the ARKYD space telescope technology to enable it to search for alien planets!
These upgrades would add exoplanet transit detection capability by enhancing the telescope's stability systems and dedicating time to monitor candidate star systems. A special bonus is that this upgrade would also allow for better measurement of the spin-properties of asteroids, using the same technique. "While the ARKYD won't rival NASA's US$600 million Kepler spacecraft, which may have to end its mission due to a recent equipment failure, the enhanced ARKYD will be a huge step toward important new scientific discoveries enabled by citizen scientists," said Chris Lewicki, President and Chief Engineer, Planetary Resources, Inc.
The company is partnered with one of the world's leading exoplanet scientists, Sara Seager, Ph.D. of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dr. Seager, Professor of Physics and Planetary Science at MIT stated, "We're excited about this game-changing approach that could transform how we do science in the future. It's not just about advanced technology in a small satellite, but a crowdfunded approach to space science that could be revolutionary. The enhanced version of the ARKYD telescope will be an important source of data for exoplanets that can only be obtained from space, above the blurring effects of Earth's turbulent atmosphere."
Peter H. Diamandis, M.D., Planetary Resources Co-Founder and Co-Chairman said, "We're confident this campaign will exceed the original goal of US$1 million dollars. We're now focusing on enhancing the capabilities of the telescope and creating meaningful and epic crowd involvement." He continued, "We're a hardware and inspiration company, and we're thrilled to provide a new generation of space pioneers with the ability to take a hands-on approach to exploration."
To date, more than 9,400 people from around the globe have pledged their support for the ARKYD. Over 8,000 have requested their very own #SpaceSelfie, another 900 people have donated time on the ARKYD to education and many others are looking to gain access to the telescope to explore the cosmos on their own!
Planetary Resources, Inc. was founded in 2009 by Eric Anderson and Dr. Peter H. Diamandis. Our vision is to establish a new paradigm for resource utilization that will bring the Solar System within humanity's economic sphere of influence. The company will conduct low-cost robotic space exploration beginning with the Arkyd Series of space missions that will identify the most commercially viable near-Earth asteroids. These initial missions will assist the company in enabling the retrieval of raw materials from these select asteroids, including water, precious metals and more.
Planetary Resources is financed by industry-launching visionaries, three of whom include Google's CEO Larry Page & Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt; and Ross Perot, Jr., Chairman of Hillwood and The Perot Group; who are committed to expanding the world's resource base so humanity can continue to grow and prosper for centuries to come. Some of the company's partners and advisors include the Bechtel Corporation; film maker and explorer James Cameron; former Chief of Staff, United States Air Force General T. Michael Moseley (Ret.); and Sara Seager, Ph.D., Professor of Planetary Science and Physics at MIT. Members of the company's technical staff have worked on every recent U.S. Mars lander including Spirit, Opportunity and Curiosity, and include other key non-aerospace and safety-critical disciplines. Wavien, Inc. Demonstrates a Hard-Edge LED Spot Light with Medium Base Socket Using Recycling Light Technology
VALENCIA, Calif., June 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Wavien, Inc. has developed a hard-edge LED spot light (TruSpot(TM)) with a standard medium base socket, which produces a distinctively clean and sharp edge profile using Wavien's proprietary Recycling Light Technology (RLT(TM)). In contrast, most medium base "spot lights" now on the market are, in reality, narrow beam flood lights which produce undefined soft edges, diminishing the highlighting effect. This TruSpot LED lamp is a simple, screw-in replacement for standard light bulbs, PAR lamps, etc., and provides a true spot light effect without the expense of custom spot light fixtures and installations. Wavien has also designed the TruSpot LED light to accept GOBO image slides so that it can be used to project advertising images.
Traditional light collection optics do not increase LED brightness and, as a result, are not efficient for spot light applications. Wavien's RLT technology is based on a very low-cost optical component that captures the wasted light in conventional lighting designs, recycles the light, and directs it back into the output beam allowing increased brightness at the spot. "Wavien's RLT technology for LED offers outstanding brightness by recovering unused high angle light from the LED. This recycling technique is a benefit for a wide range of applications, such as our newly developed TruSpot spot light," stated Dr. Kenneth Li, President and CEO of Wavien, Inc., who is also the inventor of the recycling technology. Dr. Li added: "Clearly the TruSpot light bulb, with the added feature of GOBO projection capability, is a breakthrough in the lighting industry, especially for retail locations where highlighting the product under the spot light is critical. The TruSpot offers real spot light performance without the expense of custom configurations," stated Dr. Li.
This LED recycling technique is also being introduced into many other areas of illumination including medical light sources and consumer projectors. Wavien will show this technology at InfoComm 2013 in Orlando, Florida from June 12 - 14 at booth #381.

ZEISS Brings Most Complete Immersive Experience to Gaming at E3 Expo
Plug-and-play multimedia video glasses provide no-compromise gaming experience
LOS ANGELES, June 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --Carl Zeiss, the world's leader in optics and opto-electronics, today announced NVIDIA® 3DTV Play(TM) compatibility and a headtracker gaming accessory for its cinemizer® OLED (organic light-emitting diode) multimedia video glasses that allows gamers to explore in an immersive environment through simple head movements, with no compromise whatsoever to image quality or performance. The glasses with headtracker are being demonstrated this week during the E3 Expo, the world's premier trade show for computer and video games, at the Los Angeles Convention Center (South Hall, Booth #2658).
The cinemizer OLED glasses are the most comfortable high-performance multimedia eyewear of its kind; and equipped with the headtracker, the gaming experience becomes even more competitive and more realistic. Players can simply move their head to change position instead of reaching for a console button, and the headtracker responds to the player's movements in less than 5 milliseconds.
"The extremely low latency response of the cinemizer's headtracker ensures a gamer's performance is maximized through natural movements," said Dave Hodgson, principal of Total 3D Solutions, Carl Zeiss's cinemizer OLED North American business partner. "Gamers now have the opportunity to feel part of the game not only visually but physically, as well."
Acting similar to a PC mouse, the cinemizer headtracker is suitable for all games and applications that can be controlled with a mouse. No extra driver is needed for the headtracker, so it can be activated immediately for hundreds of PC games on Windows, Apple and Linux operating systems. Console gamers also have the opportunity to enhance their game play with the headtracker through the use of a 3rd-party mouse adapter.
NVIDIA and 3D Compatibility for Superior Image Quality
The cinemizer OLED promises no compromise on performance, a pledge that begins with a pixel density of 2,500 ppi, nearly seven times that of Apple's retina display. The glasses feature two integrated OLED micro-displays, one for each eye, that provide a fill rate of 99 percent and a 4 sub-pixel-per-pixel structure. Because they use two displays, these glasses furnish amazing 3D picture quality, with no drawbacks like flimmering, motion blur, reduced luminance or ghosting to detract from the experience. The image combines high contrast, true black and vivid colors to ensure exceptional quality.
Beyond image quality, the cinemizer OLED can be used in 3D mode on PCs with an NVIDIA 3D Vision-capable GeForce® graphics card and 3DTV Play software. NVIDIA's 3DTV Play software provides gamers with access to the massive library of more than 600 3DTV Play-compatible PC games.
"Compatibility of Carl Zeiss' cinemizer OLED multimedia glasses with NVIDIA's 3DTV Play software allows gamers to achieve the full immersive potential of NVIDIA-powered graphics by erasing the room around them," stated Steve Klett, 3D Vision Product Manager at NVIDIA.
E3 attendees can experience the cinemizer OLED and NVIDIA compatibility on a NVIDIA GeForce-powered PC at the ZEISS booth.
Gamers will have no issues connecting the cinemizer OLED to 3D displays, PCs featuring NVIDIA graphics technology or even NVIDIA's new SHIELD(TM) mobile Android gaming device. Consumers can check to see if their PC is NVIDIA 3DTV Play-compatible, download a free trial version of 3DTV Play, and learn more about NVIDIA's graphics products by visiting the NVIDIA website.
Take Your Seat with Playseat and cinemizer OLED
At the E3 Expos, gamers can battle from the cockpit of a fighter jet without paying the $150 million price tag by combining the cinemizer OLED and tech from gaming seat manufacturer Playseat®. Playseat will be providing a Playseat Air Force for the ZEISS booth at E3, allowing show attendees to get the realistic feel of an immersive flight simulator with the cinemizer OLED.
When used with the new headtracker accessory, the cinemizer OLED turns simulator-style games into immersive 3D experiences without any additional drivers. Whether racing down the track or flying through the skies, gamers can eliminate the unnatural distractions created by handheld controllers and upgrade to the natural movements of the headtracker to increase game concentration.
"Playseat® recommends the Carl Zeiss cinemizer OLED and headtracker to get totally immersed in the game and enjoy complete freedom," said Playseat® COO Tako Dijkman, "getting an experience as close to reality as possible in your living room."
The Playseat® Air Force works with popular flight stick throttle and yoke sets on the market. It can be configured to a very realistic flight deck feel; but to get a fully immersive visual experience, the cinemizer OLED with headtracker is recommended. Auto race fans can also benefit from the complete experience with the cinemizer OLED, headtracker and one of Playseat's realistic racing simulation cockpits compatible with driving wheels and pedals.
Immersion Without Compromise
Unlike other immersive glasses in development, the cinemizer requires no additional drivers or game modification; it's a truly integrated plug-and-play device, fully compatible with all PCs and major console gaming systems with HDMI or AV out. For mobile games, the cinemizer plugs in easily to iOS and Android devices. The cinemizer's diverse connectivity options and 2D or 3D video capabilities extend its usefulness well beyond just the gaming market.
Nor does the cinemizer compromise on comfort; the glasses are portable and light on the head while in use, with a carefully crafted ergonomic design incorporating soft-touch nose and ear pieces so they can be worn comfortably for hours at a time without tiring the user.
Of particular importance to gamers, the cinemizer with headtracker is available for purchase right now. And E3 attendees can receive free shipping during the week of E3 by visiting the ZEISS Multimedia booth in South Hall, Booth #2658.
At E3, the ZEISS team also plans to meet with developers interested in adding new dimensions to gaming and will be seeking additional partners for distribution and retail sales of the cinemizer product range, with a specific interest in gaming.
Total 3D Solutions is a Carl Zeiss business partner and North American distributor for the cinemizer OLED. TP-LINK's Archer C7 operates over both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands to give users two dedicated networks to ensure lag-free throughput for work or entertainment. Devices processing simple tasks, such as sending e-mails or web browsing, can operate on the 2.4GHz band while those that process bandwidth-intensive tasks, such as online gaming or HD video streaming, can leverage the 5GHz band - all at the same time.
The Archer C7 features three detachable external 5dBi antennas to serve the 5GHz band and three internal antennas that serve to 2.4GHz band, reducing co-channel interference. The combination helps users maintain high speeds across greater distances anywhere in a large home or office.
To provide an added level of security, TP-LINK ships all wireless routers pre-encrypted to ensure that end-user networks are protected from the moment they are plugged in. Users can customize their security settings and set up a guest network to further protect personal data.
"Routers are the hub of the digital home and business. As more smart devices enter the scene, consumers need a smart router solution that can deliver speed and range, ease-of-use, solid security, and enables them to access their data wherever they are," says Lewis Wu, Country Manager for TP-LINK USA.
Other standard features include IPv6 support as well as one gigabit WAN port and four gigabit LAN ports for ultra fast data transfers. Dual multi-functional USB 2.0 ports are also included, which allow users to share printers, files and media with different devices throughout a local area network and via an ftp server while away from home.
TP-LINK's Archer C7 can serve as a powerful hub to support a robust AC1750 network for any home or business, available now at MSRP $149.99.

Visual preset browser makes previewing effects faster and easier - Dark user interface lets photographers concentrate on their photos - Program offers greater creative texture control
RALEIGH, N.C., June 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Alien Skin Software today announces the immediate availability of Exposure(®) 5, the new version of its flagship photography effects software. Exposure 5 enables digital photographers to achieve accurate film simulation, using a wide range of creative effects in a simple interface. Significantly, Exposure 5 can be used as a plug-in with popular host software or as a stand-alone program for even greater flexibility.
Exposure 5 brings all the creative tools of traditional film photography to the world of digital, such as the look of discontinued films, darkroom tricks, and trendy lo-fi camera quirks. Popular classic films like Kodachrome, Polaroid and even Panatomic-X are accurately simulated. Hundreds of preset effects can be applied with a single mouse-click, helping photographers achieve their desired look quickly. Exposure 5 includes both Color and black-and-white processing so there's no need to switch between tools.
"With Exposure 5, a photographer's vision is the only element separating an ordinary image from an extraordinary one. Creative control and increased productivity were essential design objectives," said Terence Tay, designer of the new Exposure 5 software. "It's now much easier and faster for photographers of all levels to find the right look for their photographs."
The entire user interface has been redesigned with productivity in mind. A darker theme reduces distractions around the photo and matches other popular tools. The preset and editing panels can be hidden, to further remove distractions and allow more room for the photograph. The new visual preset browser shows how each preset will look when applied to an image. Users can see many presets at once, for quick exploration. In addition, favorites and recently used presets are just a click away.
Significantly, Exposure 5 includes many new textures for a greater variety of vintage and Lo-Fi looks. There are now separate controls for adding borders, dust & scratches, and light leaks. A new randomize option allows a user to easily explore multiple variations on a particular look.
Exposure 5 integrates with the popular tools many photographers use in their professional workflow: Adobe(®) Photoshop(®), Lightroom(®), and now Apple(®) Aperture(®). Now Exposure 5 can also be launched as a standalone application. That is especially useful for fast batch-processing or as part of a workflow that includes tools that do not support plug-ins.
To help users get started and for advanced techniques, the Alien Skin website has a library of tutorial videos and example images.
Pricing and Availability
Exposure 5 is now available through http://www.alienskin.com for $199 USD. Owners of any version of Exposure may upgrade for $99 USD. Free upgrades will be automatically sent to everyone who purchased Exposure 4 directly from Alien Skin Software in March 2013 or later.
Host Requirements

-- Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 or newer
-- Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4 or newer
-- Apple Aperture 3 or newer
