FedTax.net announces the launch of TaxCloud, a free, web-scale sales tax calculation engine designed to support all internet merchants. The Main Street Fairness Act, introduced the same day, would require all internet merchants to collect sales tax.
SEATTLE, July 2 -- The Federal Tax Authority (FedTax.net), a private company committed to making it easy for online merchants to collect sales tax, announces the launch of its TaxCloud(TM) sales tax calculation and remittance service. FedTax.net has been designated a Certified Service Provider (CSP) by the Streamlined Sales Tax Governing Board. The CSP designation means that TaxCloud meets rigorous standards for sales tax calculation. Merchants who sign up with TaxCloud can instantly calculate the local sales tax due on any transaction for over 13,000 tax jurisdictions.
The Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement (SSUTA) is the result of the cooperative efforts of 44 states, the District of Columbia, local governments, and the business community to simplify sales tax collection and administration. The agreement minimizes costs and administrative burdens for retailers that collect sales tax, particularly retailers operating in multiple states. It encourages internet and mail order retailers to collect tax on sales to customers in the SSUTA member states. It also aims to level the playing field, so that brick-and-mortar stores and remote sellers operate under the same sales tax rules.
TaxCloud can perform all of a merchant's sales and use tax functions (except the merchant's obligation to remit tax on its own purchases). Each member state has certified the accuracy of the TaxCloud service. TaxCloud automatically monitors tax codes and incorporates any changes--so all TaxCloud merchants maintain compliance with all local sales tax laws with zero effort. TaxCloud also generates reports and automatically files state-by-state Simplified Electronic Returns for the merchant. In addition, merchants who use TaxCloud will qualify for amnesty from the SSUTA member states for failing to collect sales tax in the past.

National Research and Education Partnership Awarded $62.5 Million Recovery Act Grant for 100 Gigabit Community Anchor Backbone Network
New U.S. Unified Community Anchor Network will connect community anchor institutions across the U.S. with advanced broadband capabilities
ANN ARBOR, Mich., July 2 -- The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) today awarded more than $62.5 million in federal stimulus funding through its Broadband Technology Opportunities Program (BTOP) to a group of national research and education networking organizations including Internet2 (also known as University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development), National LambdaRail (NLR), Indiana University, and the Northern Tier Network Consortium. In collaboration with technology companies Ciena, Cisco, Infinera, and Juniper Networks, the group proposes the construction of the United States Unified Community Anchor Network (U.S. UCAN), an advanced 100 Gigabit per second network backbone that will link regional networks across the nation, including other projects funded through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The NTIA grant will be supplemented with an additional $34.3 million in contributions from the proposal partners and suppliers.
U.S. UCAN's coast-to-coast advanced infrastructure will, in partnership with regional and state research and education networks, connect America's community anchor institutions--schools, libraries, community colleges, health centers and public safety organizations--to enable advanced applications not possible with today's typical Internet service. U.S. UCAN fills a critical gap, linking community anchor institutions together into an open, national network with next-generation capabilities, operated with end-to-end transparency and the high levels of performance uniquely suited to the needs of this community.
U.S. UCAN will ensure that life-changing applications such as telemedicine and distance learning are available to all community anchor institutions, including those in areas previously considered too remote or economically depressed to support advanced network services. Led by the same research and education networking community that has already connected 66,000 community anchors through partnerships across public and private sectors, U.S. UCAN will prepare Americans--now and in the future--to compete successfully in an increasingly competitive global economy.
The network will offer its services to community anchors nationwide through a new not-for-profit organization (also called U.S. UCAN), which will be directed and governed by a partnership of the research and education networking community and representatives of community anchor institutions. In essence, the network will be owned and directed by its stakeholders. As a first priority, U.S. UCAN will make sure that it meets the needs established by its governing body of community anchors.
U.S. UCAN provides a jumpstart in implementing the FCC National Broadband Plan released in March 2010 which recommends the development of a unified network dedicated to community anchor institutions that builds on the extensive investment the research and education community has already made in national network infrastructure and leverages the human expertise and collaborations that have already developed to greatly accelerate the delivery of broadband to all of the nation's community anchor institutions.

IBM Builds Animation Cloud for Multimedia Development Corporation

The MAC3 Rendering Farm is part of the MSC Malaysia Animation and Creative Content Centre or MAC3, a strategic division established by MDeC with a mandate to drive the development of the nation's digital creative industry.
"It is a well-known fact that rendering is expensive and the MAC3 high performance rendering facility will help local creative content companies, especially the start-ups, to overcome the cost barrier," said Deputy Prime Minister Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin. "With this facility in place, Malaysia's creative content companies will have the technological edge in their rendering and production processes. At the same time, it will also help them lower their costs," he said.

Automakers Urge Drivers and Passengers to Buckle Up; Urge More Federal Action to Boost Safety Belt Use
WASHINGTON, July 1 -- Going into the heavy travel period that includes the Independence Day holiday weekend, the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers today not only urged passengers and drivers to buckle-up, the group also urged Congress to enact federal sanctions encouraging states to strengthen safety belt enforcement laws into primary laws. Under primary enforcement laws officers can stop a motorist whenever they observe a safety belt law being broken, making these violations the same as virtually all other traffic law violations. Weaker, secondary enforcement laws require an officer observe another traffic violation before stopping an un-belted motorist.
"Safety belts are the most important safety equipment in any vehicle," said Alliance President and CEO Dave McCurdy. "Since several states have exceeded a 90 percent usage rate we know that near-universal belt use is possible.
"At the same time, government statistics show that 45 million vehicle occupants still do not buckle-up, and that results in 38 fatalities during an average day," McCurdy added.
Automakers have led efforts to increase safety belt use by spending more than $120 million in the past 25 years alone. This work has helped bring the national safety belt use rate from 1994's 58 percent to an all-time high in 2009 of 84 percent, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). 2009's rate is approximately 70 percent above the usage rate 30 years ago.
"We've made tremendous progress, but to move forward we need federal highway fund sanctions that strongly encourage states to upgrade their laws," McCurdy stated, noting that this tactic has already been used to save lives by establishing a 21-year-old drinking age and a .08 BAC drunk driving standard.
This year Kansas became the 31st state (including D.C.) to enact a primary enforcement law and Georgia removed the pickup truck exemption from its primary belt use law. Primary belt laws now cover more than three-quarters of the U.S. population, and NHTSA figures show that jurisdictions with primary laws generally have higher belt use rates. In 2008 safety belts saved 13,250 people.
Twenty-two states have use rates below the national average. The lowest include Wyoming at 67.6 percent, New Hampshire at 68.9 percent and South Dakota at 72.1 percent. Wyoming and South Dakota have secondary enforcement belt use laws while New Hampshire has no adult belt requirement.
"Including a primary belt law highway fund sanction in the next transportation bill could be among the measure's most important safety elements," added McCurdy. The Alliance has supported such a provision in the legislation advanced by House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee leadership. "We will continue to push for this," McCurdy stated.

Microsoft Unveils InstaLoad Battery Installation Technology That Allows Batteries to Be Inserted in Either Direction
New ease-of-use feature now available for third-party licensing.
REDMOND, Wash., July 1 -- Microsoft Corp. today announced a new technology aimed at improving the battery installation process called InstaLoad battery installation technology, which allows users to easily install a battery without regard to positive and negative polarity. Never again will people have to squint to see battery installation diagrams -- the device simply works regardless if the battery is installed positive-side-up or positive-side-down. InstaLoad is a patented battery contact design now available for license by third-party device suppliers, with companies like Duracell already lining up to endorse the technology for use in their own products.
InstaLoad technology can be incorporated into devices that require frequent battery swap-outs, are used in less-than-ideal environments or use several batteries. Industries that could greatly benefit from this type of timesaving technology based on their environments include law enforcement, military, construction, outdoor sporting and camping. In addition, users of devices with multiple batteries and frequent battery swap-out -- including battery chargers, digital cameras, camera flash units and toys -- could also benefit.
Unlike existing electronic solutions designed to address battery-polarity installation, InstaLoad is a mechanical invention that does not drain battery power or require expensive electronic circuitry. InstaLoad battery contacts can be cost-effectively designed into most battery compartments, as it usually requires replacing existing battery contacts with the patented InstaLoad contact design.
