Want to Quit Smoking? Study Seeks Adult Smokers Nationwide for a Free, Online Smoking-Cessation Study
SEATTLE, June 18 -- Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center announced today that it is launching a new online study to help people quit smoking. The study, called WebQuit, is enrolling adult smokers nationwide. Participation is free to eligible individuals.
The goal of WebQuit is to improve the effectiveness of online smoking-cessation programs. Study director Jonathan Bricker, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist who specializes in smoking-cessation research, says that online smoking-cessation programs are improving but still have a very long way to go.
"That old Mark Twain quote that 'quitting smoking is easy - I've done it a thousand times' unfortunately is still very true today despite the plethora of smoking-cessation methods available to people," said Bricker, a faculty member in the Cancer Prevention Program in the Hutchinson Center's Public Health Sciences Division. "But I think web-based interventions are the wave of the future, not only because they are generally cheaper than personal therapy but because as a culture we are becoming more reliant on the convenient do-it-yourself options we find online."
Study participants will not be paid, but they will receive interactive tools for dealing more effectively with urges to smoke. They also will receive step-by-step guides for quitting smoking, personalized plans for quitting and staying quit, and electronic links for reaching one-on-one expert help for quitting.
Participants will be randomly assigned by computer (like the tossing of a coin) to one of two online smoking-cessation programs. The success rates of participants will then be compared. He is hopeful that the study will help adults in their quest to kick the habit.
"Our goal is to try to find what works and what doesn't; what to include in these programs and how to improve them so they can become more effective," said Bricker, also a faculty member in the Department of Psychology at the University of Washington.
Involvement in the study will entail completing online questionnaires, including several follow-up surveys. Eligible participants must be at least 18 and not currently participating in other smoking-cessation programs, among other requirements.

Broadcom Announces Intention to Acquire Innovision Research & Technology PLC
IRVINE, Calif., June 17 -- Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ:BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced its subsidiary, Broadcom International Ltd., has agreed to terms with the board of Innovision Research & Technology PLC, (a company listed on the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange: INN), to make an all-cash offer to acquire all of the issued and to be issued shares of Innovision. State Legislators Concerned by FCC's New Internet Regulation Strategy
WASHINGTON, June 17 -- The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), the nation's largest non-partisan individual member organization of state legislators, expresses serious concerns over new federal bureaucratic plans to regulate Internet space. Today, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) voted 3-2 to issue a notice containing new plans for regulating broadband Internet access. The notice contains the FCC Chairman's "third way" proposal to end broadband Internet's lightly-regulated status as a Title I "information service" by reclassifying it as a traditional common carrier-regulated Title II "telecommunications service."
"Applying outdated telephone monopoly regulation to broadband Internet is bad policy, not visionary policy," said Rep. William Hamzy (CT), Public Sector Chair of ALEC's Telecommunications & Information Technology Task Force. "We support a free and open Internet. And governmental authority already exists to combat anticompetitive practices and to protect consumers from fraud or abuse. But regulating Internet access like old telephone monopoly systems will result in years of lawsuits. The consequences of such regulatory and legal uncertainties will be chilled investment in new broadband infrastructure and reduced job creation. By trying to ram through new Internet regulation, the FCC is losing sight of our pressing need to encourage broadband deployment to un-served areas and promote adoption by un-connected Americans."
Earlier this year, over 90 state legislators submitted a joint letter to the FCC opposing earlier plans to impose network neutrality regulation. ALEC's Resolution on Net Neutrality opposes federal and state regulation of network management practices. Last year, ALEC also adopted a Broadband Internet Adoption and Programs Use Resolution that "calls upon all levels of governments to work cooperatively with the private sector, nonprofits, and academia to develop robust broadband awareness, adoption, and use programs."

The joint venture centers on the development of the "8th Art," art that develops technology and creativity beyond the moving image, i.e. film, and adds interactivity. The Institute's focus will be on the creation and integration of new technologies, new design and innovative artistic concepts for digital media applications. "Eight" will provide a nucleus where staff of Silicon Knights and the AGH and faculty and students at Master University and Mohawk College can move seamlessly between organizations on shared research projects and digital media development. Staff of Silicon Knights and AGH could participate in research, course development and teaching at the new Institute.

AGH, a leading public art gallery that positions digital art as one of its key artistic activities through research exhibition and education, has a solid track record of engaging, stimulating and enriching the community through art, and this expertise will be compounded by talented faculty and staff at Mohawk College, with its keen focus on and responsiveness to industry and market trends.
McMaster University's President, Peter George, believes the partnership will be a catalyst in developing a critical mass of expertise in digital media. The council of Canadian Academies has identified new media as having the greatest momentum and the highest growth prospects of Canada. Worldwide the digital media sector is one of the fastest growing industries in the knowledge economy, projected to be valued at US $2.2. trillion over the next five years. This program will help grow the innovation and commercialization efforts in this key strategic sector of the new knowledge and creative economy.
