Revenue in the server market grew by 3.5 percent worldwide in the third quarter, coming to $12.9 billion, according to IDC. That's the largest growth spurt in four quarters and the largest third-quarter increase since 2000, when the tech-buying binge of the dot-com days was in its final throes. Server blades were one of the primary drivers of growth, though at $738 million, blades still represent only a fraction of the overall market. Blade revenue shot up nearly 30 percent in the third quarter while unit shipments of blade servers went up about 25 percent. Revenue from high-end servers grew by 9 percent. Revenue from low-end servers, however, only grew by 3.8 percent, while mid-range server revenue declined by 2.3 percent.

Since our announcement, some parties have spoken about this patent agreement in a damaging way, and with a perspective that we do not share. We strongly challenge those statements here. We disagree with the recent statements made by Microsoft on the topic of Linux and patents. Importantly, our agreement with Microsoft is in no way an acknowledgment that Linux infringes upon any Microsoft intellectual property. When we entered the patent cooperation agreement with Microsoft, Novell did not agree or admit that Linux or any other Novell offering violates Microsoft patents.

A new technology refreshes TV images at 120 to 100 hertz, or 120 to 100 times a second, versus the 60 hertz rate of typical LCDs (liquid crystal displays). This effectively doubles the number of images per second, which leads to a smoother visual presentation to human eyes. Known as motion-compensated frame interpolation, or MCFI, the technology is just starting to appear in high-end TVs. The additional images, moreover, aren't static repeats of the image that came before them. Instead, the new images are composites of two successive images. The TV's internal microprocessors try to compensate for what the additional frame might have looked like had it been inserted into the film.

The X1650PRO isn't a $200 video card or even a $150 card so it shouldn't be expected to do what the more expensive cards can do. A month passed and I was getting quite antsy and in the process reading everything I could about the experiences of others and the motherboard(s) they chose. To keep an already long story from getting too much longer lets just say I woke one day, had my wake up caffeine, switched on the computer to get some news and clicked on the link to one of the sites I use for research. There was a veritable plethora of information about a new workstation styled board from ASUS® that was churning out some amazing numbers, the P5WDG2 WS Professional; in just over a week I had one. Normally the story would end here but as with any other high-tech computer product ASUS shortly after this announced the birth of a very similar board with even newer and more exciting features, the P5W64 WS Professional. Well I was not going to spend another tidy sum on a new motherboard when the one I had was working just fine.

The goal of this product is to separate Skype from the computer. After all, if you are willing to pay a few dollars a month Skype can be a full-fledged phone service but there is no reason why you should have to be stuck at your computer the whole time- a phone like this one is how you get the most out of Skype.

There is a growing trend in notebook computers which could put you in harms way. Since the recent discovery of thousands of defective notebook batteries being used in many of the most popular brands, explosion and heat related injuries have been on the rise. Even though the majority of notebooks are using stable batteries, most systems are so powerful now that the user is still not free and clear of potential burns during routine use. Most users will agree that the term laptop may no longer apply, as the aptly named devices are showing up less and less on a users lap.

Beg, plead, whine, cheat, steal from some poor teen who preordered the unit, even. Whatever it takes to get the job done, the system you're looking to lay hands-on this year is the PlayStation 3. However, should you be a longtime hobbyist chagrined by the industry's recent focus on cookie-cutter sequels, a gaming neophyte intrigued by this growing interactive entertainment fad, a fan of all-time great franchises like Mario and Zelda or simply an everyday admirer with a passing interest in the subject matter, we've got some good news. They then take things to a new level by adding the four extremely useful hot swap SATA drive bays. "We've had an issue, a problem that we've had to confront, which is because of the way the GPL (General Public License) works, and because open-source Linux does not come from a company -- Linux comes from the community -- the fact that that product uses our patented intellectual property is a problem for our shareholders. We spend $7 billion a year on R&D, our shareholders expect us to protect or license or get economic benefit from our patented innovations. So how do we somehow get the appropriate economic return for our patented innovation, and how do we do interoperability. The truth is, because of the complex licensing around the GPL, we actually didn't want to do one without the other.

Vista's DRM technologies fall into several distinct categories, all of which are either completely new to the operating system or represent a significant change from the technology found in previous versions of Windows. The Intel-developed Trusted Platform Module (TPM) makes DRM harder to circumvent by extending it beyond the operating system and into the PC's hardware components. TPM is used with Vista's BitLocker full-drive encryption technology to protect a PC's data against security breaches. A TPM microchip embedded on the PC's motherboard stores unique system identifiers along with the BitLocker decryption keys. If a system is tampered with -- for example, if the hard drive is removed and placed in a different machine -- TPM detects the tampering and prevents the drive from being unencrypted.

Because these two photons are entangled, the act of detecting the second as either a wave or a particle should simultaneously force the other photon to also change into either a wave or a particle. But that would have to happen to the first photon before it hits its detector -- which it will hit 50 microseconds before the second photon is detected. That is what quantum mechanics predicts should happen. And if it does, signaling would have gone backward in time relative to the first photon.

"This operating system is currently not supported by Zune," reads an error message when trying to install Zune software on the latest versions of Microsoft's own Windows Vista operating system.

Typically, systems that use electromagnetic radiation, such as radio antennas, are not suitable for the efficient transfer of energy because they scatter energy in all directions, wasting large amounts of it into free space. To overcome this problem, the team investigated a special class of "non-radiative" objects with so-called "long-lived resonances". When energy is applied to these objects it remains bound to them, rather than escaping to space. "Tails" of energy, which can be many metres long, flicker over the surface.

Even a feature as basic as the disk mode, though, adds complexity, Microsoft said. For example, users sometimes get confused between songs that can be played versus those that are transferred to a player only as a file in disk mode. By making the Zune software the only way to move items onto a Zune, Microsoft hopes to eliminate any confusion. And although Microsoft is starting with a small feature list, Erickson said the company will be able to make additions fairly quickly through software updates. First on that list is compatibility with Windows Vista.

Of course it would. If the RIAA was forced to claim back the real market value of the music that was nicked by pirates it probably would not be worth the effort. It also looks better on a press release if they can claim that a pirate stole $7,000 worth of music when they actually only stole $7...

Carbon nanotubes, the reigning celebrity of the nanotechnology world, conduct electricity far better than metals. In fact, nanotubes exhibit what's called ballistic conductivity, which means that electrons are not scattered or impeded by obstacles. Nanotubes, which measure only a few billionths of a meter thick, are also far thinner than metal interconnects can be made. Potentially, this eliminates the problem with shrinking interconnects. IBM and others have made transistors out of carbon nanotubes. In its experiment, Intel aligned bundles of nanotubes by means of an electric field and then measured their frequency with fairly standard equipment.

As we revealed last week, Microsoft now starts the countdown clock to the official launch of Vista and Office 2007 to the business community, which will take place on November 30. This will be bookended by a 'consumer launch' which we've already tipped as January 30 2007, although Microsoft spokespeople are still towing the company line of 'late January' rather than circle a specific day on the calendar. Vista RTM followed the announcement Monday of Office 2007 RTM, so we expect quite a bit of partying at Microsoft's sprawling Redmond campus. The Vista gold code (christened with the build number 6000) will be available for download to members of the MSDN network within the next seven days, along with Office 2007, so next week should be a big one for downloading.

With so many high performance laptops coming out there needs to be some way of cooling them so they perform at top notch. With some laptops stock cooling just does not cut it. There are so many laptop cooling pads out there it is hard to choose. Well today I have a laptop cooler that is very different than many others. You can open and close it to the desired size you need so if you have multiple laptops you can use it on both. Also because it is contractible it makes it easier to travel with. So let's take a look at the Hiyatek Contractible Laptop Cooling Pad.

The product we'll be discussing comes from a company named Ultrasone that many of us are probably not all that familiar with. There are a couple reasons why you may not have heard of Ultrasone before. First of all they're based in Germany, and since they were founded in 1991, they're also fairly new as well. Ultrasone's focus has primarily been on providing high-end headphones to professionals in the music industry, so most of their products are priced higher than what most the average person would be willing to pay for headphones. The PROline 650 headphones that we'll be looking at today aren't what I'd consider

Our theoretical article about ATI AVIVO technologies had been published = long ago. But we had no time to test hardware accelerated video = playback. It had to do with the fact that both ATI and NVIDIA were = developing support for video decoding in drivers so actively, that = nearly each release introduced lots of new features. So it was difficult = to compare GPU performance, as the situation would change every month. = And now everything seems to settle down a bit. Either ATI and NVIDIA = fine tuned their support for video decoding, mentioned in our = theoretical article, or they just grew tired of this task. So we decided = to analyze the situation with hardware accelerated video decompression = and playback.

The 975X has shown itself to be quite resilient despite some newer chipsets on the market. Intel themselves must be fans since they repackaged it again for quad core support. While stability is something that should be a standard, this has not always been the case with many motherboards released. The MSI 975X Platinum V.2 is a solid reboot and was very reliable and consistent in our testing. Little things like this is important as it makes for a more enjoyable computing experience and also leaves us with more hair as we're less prone to getting frustrated and yanking it out.

Looking back to the key marketing features Silverstone is presenting I'd say the results meet the marketing about half way. Certainly the case does have a clean, sophisticated appearance, and it does present many cooling options if you require them; however, given the depth of the case, the storage capacity could be severely hampered with the wrong mix of components, and you'll have a difficult time keeping this case quiet enough to be inaudible during quiet sections of movies or games if it's not stationed in a console or cabinet.

The HIS X1950Pro 256MB Video Card performs very well and has all the technologies to support current games. This series of video card has the new crossfire bridge which makes installation much easier than the cumbersome external cable used previously. One of the best things about this product is the price. It's very affordable! This video card has enormous bang-for-the-buck. Watch the Video to find out more...

Quote: Intel has been cranking out impressive processors during 2006 and it looks like Intel has any intentions of bringing that to an end any time soon. The first Intel quad-core processor looks to be a winner in a number of ways, but the most important is the fact that many motherboards that have the i975 Express chipset need nothing more than a BIOS update to enable quad-core support. When it comes to applications that take advantage of four cores no other desktop processor from AMD, or even Intel for that matter, come close to the performance levels that we have recorded with quad-core.

If it wasn't enough that NZXT is crafting some of the finest cases available to the market today, they are also reinventing the wheel; with success. The tool-less panel design incorporated in the Adamas is one of the most durable latch systems I have yet to see. You won't find more then a bottle-cap worth of plastic used to build this case; and even then we're talking about small pieces used to secure drive doors and make cushion feet for the case. It really seems as though the marketing department over at NZXT didn't have to stretch the imagination in describing this case.

How the CPU architecture communicates with the memory is one part of the equation. Another part is how the architecture processes data. Before, CPU instructions would break up the data into small bits and executing them at the same time. How it changes now is the processor will combine similar instructions and execute them at the same time. This method is far more efficient and there is less latency involved.

As the basis for a HTPC, this is an excellent choice. The board was designed to be used as a stable platform for desktop and HTPC use and it does this job with aplomb. I feel that anyone looking for an inexpensive motherboard for a HTPC will find this board offers everything they are looking for, including the low price.

Quote: Both of these coolers feature unique designs which definitely grab your attention, as well as providing respectable cooling performance. The Eclipse and Mars coolers performed much better than the stock AMD CPU cooler, and allowed an AMD X2 4200 AM2 processor to be kept cool even while overclocked.
