A huge breakthrough was discovered last week on Mars. The NASA Phoenix lander has found water ice. This is a big discovery since it ads a bunch of questions. How did it get there? Why is still there? Is are a big store of water ice?

SAPPHIRE HD 4800 series graphics cards are Microsoft Windows Vista Premium certified and supported by the ATI Catalyst suite of software, ensuring customers have ongoing access to software updates for performance, stability and added features. Verizon has increased all tiers of their FIOS program. The lowest tier is now 10/2Mbps. That's insane.

Verizon will also upgrade its mid tier offering increasing speeds from 15Mbps/2Mbps to 20Mbps/5Mbps. And the low end service will increase from 5Mbps/2Mbps to 10Mbps/2Mbps.

Congratulations to the WINE project on the release of their first stable code branch. The most used Windows apps are now working perfectly on WINE. Anyone that complains about switching to Linux due to Photoshop or Office now has no issue. They both work perfectly under WINE.

The AP tried to use DMCA takedown notices to stop quoting of their reports in other sites. The backlash from those notices made them rescind their notices. The AP is really stupid for doing something like this. Most of these "blogs" today are just echoing stories (I'm echoing a story right now!). The AP sometimes changes content so the original information is lost so when people quote the original, it is safe from change. AP needs to sort out this stuff since it is covered under Fair Use... plus all quotes were given with citations.

The Retort is a community site comparable in function to Digg, Reddit and Mixx. The 8,500 users of the site contribute blog entries of their own authorship and links to interesting news articles on the web, which appear immediately on the site. None of the six entries challenged by AP, which include two that I posted myself, contains the full text of an AP story or anything close to it. They reproduce short excerpts of the articles -- ranging in length from 33 to 79 words -- and five of the six have a user-created headline.

These laws take away freedoms we've had on the internet. Do not give government more power just because you can't do your job. You brought a new life into the world, you should take care of it.

Intel has released new chipsets in the 4 series. The G45 and G43 will compliment the P45 and the P43 on the desktop. Here I am with an X38 Asus board and I can't get to the magical DDR3-2000 speeds for a review. I guess it's time to move to an X48 board.

Intel has four new desktop chipsets to show off from this year's Computex trade show in Taiwan. The G45 and the G43 focus on HD video playback by way of a new Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X4500HD integrated graphics chip. The P45 brings support for faster memory and is the first mainstream Intel-made chipset with two graphics card slots. A scaled-down P43 chipset rounds out the new 4 Series. All of the chipsets use Intel's familiar LGA 775 processor interface, which means support for Intel's Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad desktop CPUs. Intel has also added a 1,333MHz front side bus to each chipset, as well as support for DDR3 RAM, as well as DDR2 or DDR3 RAM at speeds up to 1,333MHz.

ASE sites were down due to a huge datacenter problem at ThePlanet were ASE gets its servers from. A power transformer blew up and caused massive damage. Thankfully, the servers were isolated and they were fine. The problem was (as they say) that the fire department wouldn't let them turn on the backup generators or anything so people like me were stuck for a day and a half without servers.

Things like this wouldn't be that big of an issue if ThePlanet had good communication. I didn't know that it was a datacenter problem until 2.5 hours after my server was down. Then during the fiasco, ThePlanet lacked proper timetables. I'm very unhappy with ThePlanet over how they handled this.

The new SSDs that will come out this year will be quickly replacing mechanical hard drives in notebooks. All that's left is pricing to come down. While mechanical drives offer more storage for less price, the benefits of SSD make it the eventual winner.

Open-Source ATI Driver Achieves 3D Success

You've read right... A guilty verdict has been rendered on the first online music copyright case with criminal charges. I agree that copyright infringement is wrong, I don't agree that it should be a criminal matter nor do I believe the damages being sought fit what was done. This isn't stealing.

This case is different in that this guy received payment for copyright infringement and found media that were trade secrets (pre-released). It still shows that the media cartels control the law and normal people like you and me are really screwed when it comes to rights.

It turns out that NBC did use the DRM broadcast flag to block recording of its shows. Another reason to switch to fully open systems that give you full rights. Microsoft's own Media Center blocks recordings so you get what you paid for... a cheap hacked system that sides with the media cartels instead of consumers. This is why MythTV works so well. It is free and unencumbered by meaningless DRM. What's worse, this may have been a test by NBC to see if people would care that they couldn't record shows. Bad press and resentment from the community said they did. It is a good thing that people are aware of the issue and that people know that Media Center from Microsoft trashes consumer rights.

I love how Microsoft tries to spin everything that they do wrong. Face it Microsoft, you are doing a disservice to consumers. There is no other way around it.

Microsoft is admitting that they support the broadcast flag that content owners want to shove down consumer throats. Windows Media Center PCs refused to record two shows because of this flag. That's what you get when you can't inspect the source code. You gets lies and deceit. People should turn to free and open alternatives such as MythTV which rocks.

The "rules," in which the spokeswoman is apparently referring to are those proposed by the FCC, which would require software and hardware makers to honor "broadcast flags." The flags are code that broadcasters can insert into the data stream of TV shows that typically require restrictions on the recording of the shows. What she didn't say is that the "rules" aren't rules at all. The courts struck down the FCC's proposal in 2005, saying the regulator lacked the authority to tell electronics makers how to interpret the signals they receive. Since then, Microsoft and other manufacturers have retained the option of whether to honor the flags.

Leave it to Microsoft to spread more BS about the FCC "rules" that were overturned by courts three years ago.

The great free and open source FPS game has a new update. The update fixes a bunch of issues and includes a new gameplay option of Onslaught. I'll be trying it now.

This is not due to Texas passing a new law. Amazon operates a distribution center in Texas (under the guise of a different company). Based on current law, they should charge Texas sales tax to residents in that state.

The issue came to light last month after Amazon.com Inc. sued the state of New York over whether it should begin charging customers state sales taxes, citing the federal law it appears to be breaking in Texas.
